Searched Q&A and havent seen any other complaints to match my own.
My sgh-i777 takes about 2 seconds to wake from sleep when I hit the power button. This is only when on battery power. Maybe not a full 2 secs, but noticeable lag anyway (the only noticeable lag btw). It wakes up immediately when plugged in to AC power. I noticed the issue both on stock and CM7(which is freaking awesome) .
So here is my Q:
Is this normal wake behavior for the SGS2? Just got it today and wondering if maybe it is a hardware issue.
PS: I know I need to update my sig now... Dell Streak 5 was an awesome form factor, but holy **** I love this new processor! (But thumbs cramping a bit from the small screen, LOL)
I seem to have a lag too. I had it before root while on stock and i still have it on cm7

Fundamentally takes at least 650msec to wake up from deep suspend - add to that other wakeup processing and you get about a second.
Nothing you can really do about it - most of it is spent waiting for the modem to wake up.
The lag is getting me greif from iphail owners.... They're like my [stupid retarded lame piece of ****] Iphone doesn't lag.

Latest CM7 nightly (10) has LED notifications which uses wake_lock to prevent deep suspend. -guess I need to get a 2nd battery
Going to try it out. A bit disappointing that the most advanced phone on the market has this noticeable lag when waking. I have never experienced this on any other phone... I tend to accidently double hit the power button just to have it wake a moment later followed immediately by the electron beam CRT power off animation!
What really grinds my gears is that this wake lag NEVER happens when plugged in to the charger.

That's because charging holds a permanent wakelock.

Does your phone instantly wakeup when you press the Home or Power button?
I find that mine takes 1.5 seconds to wake up most of the time, and its frustrating - reminds me of my HD2 with android on it.
When the phone is plugged into the mains, the wakeup time is instant.
My friend's Galaxy S II wakes up instantly all the time (even without mains connection).
mine too,
did u find a solution?
Unfortunately not. I'm dying for one as well. I have even tried setting the CPU to 1.2Ghz all the time using SetCPU, but it still has that annoying 1-2 second delay.
Anyone else experiencing a similar problem? If yes, do you have the Android OS battery eating bug as well? I do...
I have the same problem. However, mine only started after I updated to the latest firmware. Before it was instant on, now there is a noticeable lag.
+1 Also have this lag. Hopefully it can be fixed! Kernel issue?
Last night I was experiencing lag, this morning however it wakes up instantly. All I did between then and now was switch the phone off overnight and use Titanium Backup to clean up the the Dalvik cache. Not sure if either of those things made the difference but something certainly has.
I am absolutely satisfied with this phone . BUT i have one problem . When i push the power buton it takes between 0.2 and 2 secound to appear the lock screen. What should i do to make it faster? Becouse the waiting is disappointing with this hardware ....
if u want instant on u will need all of you 4 cores to stay awaken at full speed at all time u still want it ?
it goes to power saving mode thats why it needs 2 secs to be awaken

It's right , but my old desire hd had about 0.5 sec to wake up . This is why i asked it .
It's a battery saving feature. You can turn off S-Voice on lockscreen from the S-Voice settings, or just completely disable the whole application like I did, and this speeds up the wake process a little bit.

Yes i have already done that . But this lag is really annoying . Mainly because its not always the same ammount . Sometimes it takes 3 secounds but sometimes its a half secound. I really dont know what to do...
If your USB cable is connected, it wakes up instantly, if not, there is a lag. This is a feature (!) of Samsung phones. We discussed it deeply on this thread in SGS2 forum:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1136223
Basically, it's epic failure by Samsung and there's no solution.
It can't be explained by saying phone needs to sleep, because HTC, LG, Sony, Motorola phones sleep too and none of them needs so long to wake up.
oh well in terms of when your actually using the phone, nothing compares to the speed and fluidity of Sammy phones. Isnt really an issue that it takes a second longer to wake up

Yes, but they also dont tend to have as good standby battery life on HTC, LG, Sony or Moto phones.
I'm not defending them completely but this is a design decision rather than a bug. That said, on the Galaxy Note it has been almost completely alleviated since the ICS upgrade.

I noticed it only recently after screwing around @ 1.8ghz that suddenly the phone is taking sometimes millisec or sometimes even 3 secs to go to lock screen and also ripple is slowed if immediately try to unlock. I thought maybe i messed up some part of hardware by o/cing it too much. Even my old LG O3D takes just a sec. ANyway glad to know it's a common thing and not my phone being fkd up.
I can't judge, I take several minutes to wake up.
Still waiting...

Thank you for all the answers!
Ive noticed this too, its frustrating, makes the phone feel laggy.
My S2 was running CM9 and that was sharp as hell, no messing about, is this something that will in time be fixed with a custom rom?
Sometimes when I press the power button to unlock the phone, the lock screen pops up instantly, but other times it can take 1-2 seconds for it to pop up.
Does anyone else get this? Does anyone know what causes it? It's a minor irritation, but it's the only flaw I have with this phone so it would be nice if there was a way to fix it.
Thanks.
This also irritates me extremely much!
Quite often I'm unsure if I clicked the powerbutton "enough", so I click again. Then what happens is that the screen turns on and then back off again for me to click a 3rd time.
At least it's not just me then! Hopefully it will be fixed via a software update at some point.
This is well known it occurs when the CPU enters deep sleep. The same thing occured on the S2. From what I have gathered it is the way Samsung Design there CPU's. It was never fixed really on the S2 there was workarounds but no definite fix.
Thanks
Ricey
Thanks for the info! I won't hold out on a fix then, but it's not the end of the world.
yep i have noticed that too.
when you use home menu to turn on screen the delay is slight.
but when you use the power button to turn on the screen the delay is a bit longer compared to using homescreen.
btw, i turned off svoice for home button.
"It is a feature!"
Seriously, it is normal because the phone throttles down its monster quad-core. Trust me guys, you do not want QC at full speed all the time
Pretty sure it is just the samsung rom. same thing with stock samsung roms on my old galaxy s, flash cm9 or aokp and it fixed it.
Flashing those 2 on my device stops the delay and it is almost instantaneous, try jellybean and it IS instantaneous, can't wait for a proper port of that in a few months time... by then I should be sick of samsungs rom and looking for a change anyway. The only problem is that samsung actually did an awesome job this time and i prefer it over stock android. Just the subtle things such as being able to pull down my notification bar in fullscreen games and all the motion control things Its a hard one for me to choose what i want
I'm sooo close to caving in and replacing my GS2 for a 3, one of my very few pet peeves with the SG2 is how slow it wakes..
Seeing a lot of you guys came from GS2s I figured who best could answer my question of does the GS3 snap to life faster then your old GS2?
Also as long a you're answering what is the feature that most impressed you coming from the GS2? TIA.

Honestly, I find it does wake quicker than my i9100 did. Hopefully more will confirm as it may be subjective, but it tends to wake in under a second when hitting power button on mine anyway where my SGS2 was like 2 or 3 seconds when waking.
For me, you can really tell the higher resolution screen which was a plus for me. The LED light is incredible useful (no more waking phone to see if I have any messages). And the third was definitely LTE which is so much faster in my area than HSPA which seems to be really congested. Those three things made it worth the upgrade alone. All in all, maybe not a HUGE upgrade but a decent enough upgrade for myself

Nice... I know that screen is very nice.. I haven't seen anyone posting anything about the GS3 display staying on while your eyes are still on it, has this feature been included with the AT&T GS3???

Yes, it actually not your eyes it's detecting, but face. Love this feature, very useful when reading something or playing puzzle games.
The way it's working, it turns front camera on a few seconds before it dims the screen, if it detect a face, nothing happens, if no face near, it dims the screen for 5 seconds, then it checks again for a face, if found it, it turns up the brightness and resets screen timeout, otherwise shuts it off.
Wakeup time has a slight lag, but it's not annoying. However if you are using something like SetCPU and set profile to turn down CPU clock to lowest possible when screen is off, then it might not response to touches after wakeup for a few seconds.

Great to hear.. I just found there is a patch to let the hard home button wake the phone which is very cool...
Having a hard time justyifying replacing my GS2 after only 8 months but damn this GS3 looks sweet....
Not to mention I'm seriously thinking of putting my iPad (Gen 1) on eBay along with my GS2, the new Nexus 7 tablet for $199 looks just as inviting as the GS3

Just for the record, at least AT&T version has this feature by default, no need any patches.

This is enabled by default on the Verizon version as well, no patch needed.
Awesome, it'd be getting the AT&T version... Now I see the GS3 Red pre-orders have started and will be available on the 29th, my resistance it's getting weaker by the minute
How have the ROMs been so far for the GS3 (the AT&T versions)?

I've just conducted a series of tests (just tracing the movement using the dev tools->show traces) and I've noticed the screen is much less responsive when I'm charging the phone. I have no idea why this is happening. I'm using the charger on my tablet, and it doesn't have the same effect. The tablet is just as responsive as usual. The charger I'm using is the one which came w/ the phone.
Issues: you have to hold down for longer to register touches. This messes up w/ typing. Also it sometimes lets go of a touch before you remove your finger. Quite annoying. There's also quite a bit of general lag: the keyboard stays up for a second before going away, home screen takes a bit to load up icons or widgets.
The second you remove the charger, it goes back to normal response. Quick screen response, no system lag, nothing negative.
Anyone experiencing the same issue?

Known issue with many devices. One of the custom kernels (might be siyah, can't recall just now) even has custom touch sensitivity settings for when the device Is plugged in.

Another cause of lagg when charging is choosing a battery icon that has a charging animation in the status bar. I have a S3 and it becomes very laggy with the charging animation so I chose a simple battery icon that doesn't have any charging animation and now it is the same speed when charging or not charging.
