So idk if this is a cm7 thing on the SGS2 or if it's the phone itself, and but the volume is super loud. I have it at 1, and it's what I would normally listen to music at with headphones. 3 is about as loud as I'll go. I can't imagine going up to like 10 or something. Is this just me?

might actually be the headphones you are using. try using a pair with different amps, and see if the problem still persists.
I'm using Bose IE2s. And they were pretty normal with my inspire...
I also don't have another pair

Having the same problem with CM7 on my SG2. Volume at 1 is normal listening level with anything higher being too loud.
It's consistent using earbuds and headphones.
I have the same thing going on with my SGSII/CM7.2.0 RC0
It's not really a problem for me but it is odd. This is with a pair of iPod earbuds which I typically only use at the gym. Volume at level 3 is plenty loud. I'm sure the earbuds would blow at louder volumes alond with my ear drums. Anyway, the sound is still clear so I just keep the volume lower. As far as testing with something else, it's normal when I plug up to an auxiliary in on a small stereo at home. So, it must be the headphone/earbuds.
There's an app called anEq equalizer that some have been able to use to make the volume 'quieter'.
Seems it's an already noted issue with cyanogenmod. Hopefully it'll get fixed.

Using this app now and it does make it little quieter.
The app requires a service to run in the background to perform the task so it isn't ideal but will work fine till they fix it.

Nearly every kernel available for your phone, for the last ~6 months at least, has had audio boost already in it. If you're running the stock kernel, you don't have audio boost
I'm running the CM7 kernel. I'm asking to modify it even further.

Pretty sure it's at the max for clarity/volume without causing undue stress to the speaker. Try one of the other kernels in the section that have the audio boost mod and see if that helps, pretty sure they are the same though.
Last resort, call your doctor.

Yep... increasing it anymore is going to make things distorted as all hell, especially if you're using a bluetooth speakerphone/headset...
We could try cranking it higher, but I'm not sure what the threshold for the built-in speaker is, and I'm not inclined to try and find out through trial and error...
It wouldn't be that hard to do, but the values are already at what has been a safe, established setting for over a year at this point... so why change it?

pay for a hearing aid instead!! ;p
I probably should've indicated that this is a BT issue...
Basically I'm connected to my car unit via BT using the N1 dock. The media/navigation volume is quite loud but the in-call volume is brutally low. I always raise the volume when in a call but when I end the call I nearly blow my speakers because the media volume is so loud!
Maybe something can be written to include a BT check?
I use the N1 dock for calls and the car headunit for media, works well that way and the volume is fine.
My headunit has separate media/phone source modes as well so I can set them up with different volumes, it's only a fairly cheap Sony unit too.

I'd prefer to use the head unit for both but unfortunately my Clarion CZ500 doesn't have 2 settings.
So, do I still need a hearing aid/visit to the doctor?

When I'm in my car listening to music through my note I'm always having a problem with getting the most out of my car speakers
For example: (I have equalizers btw) ill dim the volume on the phone but raise the car volume
Sometimes its better or worse when you raise the phone volume all the way and handle it wig the car speakers
Although the lower the phone volume he more, "clear" from the speakers -but not as loud

Just have a stock radio in car. No amps or anything but the stock is a decent unit for my needs. I turn the phone about 90% up then adjust from the car unit. Sound is always good for me. I'd say experiment and see what works for you. Don't forget to try an equalizer on and off from the phone. It's really a personal taste thing in my view.
I max out the volume on the note and adjust through the car speakers. I'm having to use an FM transmitter also, as my '05 doesn't have aux in. Still, it sounds great. Even better once i flashed the Beats eq.

In this case your phone is essentially a pure amp while your head unit is the power amp. Even at Max volume, your phone shouldn't be distorting the volume output. You want it all the way or nearly all the way up to allow as much headroom as possible for your power amp. You also don't want to re eq an eqd signal. Decide whether you like your phones or your stereos eq better, and set the other flat. You'll almost always have to tweak a bit further as line in mp3 will have different sound characteristics as a CD or the radio. Also, for the love of God, don't use 128kbps songs like most people.

The one thing I'm trying to figure out is engine noise.
Anyone else getting that or even know what I'm talking about?
if I have my phone plugged into my via head phone jack and nothing is playing on it, you hear a high pitch noise that fluctuates according to the rpms of the engine.
Would be awesome if there was an app to white noise it out or something, haven't checked though.

Do a search on 'inline noise suppressor'. This might help. You could also look at moving the radio's ground wire to a different location and might solve your noise.

After looking that up, I have determined that is not the solution for me. I'm dealing with a factory, stock car aux setup, it shouldn't be giving me problems and as a matter of fact my prior iPhone 3g didn't have this problem at all. I believe this happens with two cars that I've used it in, so while it is related to the car and specifically the engine's RPMs, I believe this can be fixed via the phone for the following reason:
When I push the back button on the phone while it's plugged in it will briefly silence the noise, also when I play Pandora the noise only appears between songs, and no it's not still there being covered up, I would be able to distinguish it in the music.
Anyway, hope someone had another fix for this. Could potentially be a hot selling app if you could figure it out.

what else has changed besides the phone? the charger perhaps? where do you keep your phone? do you keep your phone on it's charger while you listen to it via your stereo?
I run a satilite radio in my truck that runs through an aux line I installed and I get engine noise for a couple of reasons. My aux line isn't heavy duty and sits next to my firewall and effected by the EMI of my engine. The power cable isn't shielded and doesn't have any in line suppression so it's effect from the truck alternator, no matter how clean the signal is, varries as your engine's RPMs move. I run into the same issues with my phone, all of this is in a Sierra Denali truck with a Bose system and also occurrs in my BMW. So no matter how much you paid for a vehicle, it still can be a factor.
So try an inline noise suppressor, they're like $10 at radio shack and if it doesn't work take it back.
You'd be surprised of the effects electricity and EMI will do to your audio.

Make sure you don't have loudness cranked up to much on your car settongs or something similar to "gain" that usally makes my hissing noise go away.. don't want to over kill the volume spectrum.. I usally leave media volume like 90% on phone and use my volume crank on the other side?
Yeah. If I leave volume low on phone and then amp it up, then I get all sorts of noise. If I do the opposite, the noise isn't as bad as it was.

I have tried every adjustment I could but no dice. It just sounds distorted no matter what I do. Do u think I have a defective one? Try the app from the play store called Volume+. I've used it only to modify the external speaker for better quality on other devices, but there are options to modify sound for the in call speaker & headset also. You'll want to select headset obviously as it just refers to audio out via the 3.5mm jack. I hope this helps you & your able to adjust the audio profile for better quality, as I've had success with this app, but I haven't used it on the gs3 yet?
I'll give that a try. I am also getting a buzzing at the beginning and around the

Ok, well there are other apps if you google search or search the play store & also look at the roms in your dev section & I will almost guarantee one of them has dsp manager or some sort of audio equalizer app included.
Now the buzzing noise is 95% one of two things. 1) The auxiliary outlet in your car stereo has an issue or it just gets a poor connection, this can happen sometimes in lower end after market head units or for other various reasons I'm sure.2) The auxiliary cable your using is causing it because of a short or because cheaper cables just get a ****ty connection & thus provide ****ty audio quality. Try buying a more expensive one and give it a shot as soon as you get to the parking lot, if the problem persists then you can walk right back in & tell them its not what you needed & get a refund. 3) Your phone has a bad 3.5mm jack. (This is possible, but probably the least likely)
Please report back what your results are after trying these few possible solutions. I think you'll have a viable fix here soon. I hope this helps out.
It's not a cheap deck lol it's Pioneer. The buzzing does it with the stock head phones and my after market jvc earbuds.
If I turn the volume up (headphones) halfway it's starts to sound distorted. With my epic I could rock the volume the whole way up with out any distortion.
I'm starting to wonder if it's the Jack. It's bad lol

That really sucks if its the jack, just because you have to set everything up again. I wasnt aware there was a known issue with the jack, but I hope your able to at leastget a working one. Good Luck
I've got a couple of requests, both audio related. Hoping ROM and/or kernel developers might be able to help out...
1. A global gain setting/boost for the headphone jack. For those that use the headphone jack with, say, an Aux In to a car stereo, you really have to crank the stereo to get decent volume. It's probably a good 20-25% lower output than my iPhone 4. The Play Store boost options are unreliable and only work for apps that don't include their own built-in EQ.
2. Toggle to disable the LG feature that turns the volume down automatically "to save your ears" when you plug something into the jac. It's a good feature for headphone users, but a real annoyance for those using Aux In on another device. Plug in, crank the LGOG, crank the stereo and you've got a listenable signal.
Thanks.

Again, the booster apps only work for apps that don't include their own EQ. So it's fine for Pandora but not for, say, Subsonic.
Best way to do this would be with a system-level tweak. I had a Nook Color and they had extremely low audio levels. A dev added this feature and all worked great.
Clearly I'm not alone in being annoyed by this issue.

In the interim you could just not use subsonic and use a simpler music app...

I'm pretty down about the volume issues too.., my only real beef with this bad Larry..I'm on base 0.7, running well, w/custom kernel too. One weird thing that got me confused is a few apps, all "audio" related, power amp(very few issues in 2+yrs) volume+ and 2-3 more won't open, nothing happens, been through every step that should be needed for fixin this, kinda boggled. Oh, I gotta check but on linpack, base .05, stock kernel, my phone killed it and snagged 4th and like 19th highest overall, the 19th was under clocked too multi thread, /Rob/Boston
