Is this possible?
Ive rooted my phone before, started having problems and unrooted, lost everything. I finally got my phone the way I want it and want to root it now, but Im afraid ill lose everything if I manage to mess something up again
No....rooting is what gives you that possibility ....some root just to backup...

Titanium backup requires root.
Nandroid backup does not require root, but it does require flashing a CWM Recovery enabled kernel first.
If you want to do a nandroid backup before you root, I would suggest that you use step 3 (a or b) in the guide "How to Flash Custom Binaries Without Ever Incrementing the Flash counter!!" linked in my signature, to flash a CWM enabled kernel such as Entropy512's daily driver. Flashing a kernel using adb or terminal will not affect your settings. Then reboot into recovery and run a nandroid backup. Once you have a nandroid backup, you can always return to where you are now if something goes wrong.
Flashing the Unbrick/Return to Stock + Root package by Entropy512 should give you root without messing with your settings, as long as you do *not* do a wipe data/factory reset first.

so i've had my phone for a month now(first android phone).
I've already rooted using Entropy's method(flashes stock rom with root) as soon as i got it.
I noticed that on UnNamed Prerequisites, it says you must be running a kernel with CWM.
first of all, how can i completely back up my phone? I've heard of nandroid back up.. but not too sure how it all works. Isn't it smart to back it up before installing other roms?
Next, what do i have to do in order to get a kernel running CWM in order to flash UnNamed?
one more thing: When i flash UnNamed it will completely wipe everything right? (because this is what i'm hoping for)
Any help is greatly appreciated
You can't do a nandroid backup until you install a custom kernel. You can back up your applications with Titanium Backup as long as you have root.
Go to the Guide How to Flash Custom Binaries Without Ever Incrementing the Flash counter!! and follow either step 3a or 3b using a ClockworkMod Recovery enabled kernel such as Entropy512's daily driver.
Next, boot into recovery and do a nandroid backup.
Now still in recovery, do a wipe data/factory reset. (This is required before installing UnNamed anyway.)
Download the latest version on UnNamed and transfer it to the root of your phone's internal sd card.
And finally, boot into recovery and install from sd card the UnNamed file you transferred.
Hello everyone,
I have SGS2 with latest stock firmware (XWKI4) for my region.
Now, I would like to start playing with it with roms and such (yes, I already have Jig just as safety net), however I would like to creat as close as possible original configuration.
Now, I have rooted the phone with zergRush by Doomlord sucessfully and made efs backup as well as kernel image backup via HC-kTool. (This is kernel image backup right?) This way I presume I got pretty much untouched kernel image except rooting, right?
What now I would like to do is to make ROM backup and install some recovery. I know that Clockwork that comes with Rom Manager isnt exactly the same as Chainfires CW that comes with CF-Root and I know that Chainfires CW is optimized for Samsung phones (not to mention that they are not compatible with each other).
I guess my question would be is above that I did make sense, and shall I install CW from ROM Backup or get some CF-Root kernel with CW? I mean what do I lose with each solution, or any other advice how to complete ROM backup so that I can recover it if something, God forbid(knock on the wood), gets fishy?
Cheers

If you take some time and search different threads in xda developers forum, you will find many user posting statements not to use ROM manager.
As I do not use ROM manager at all, I did not read the whole posts. That's why I do not exactly know, what the issues are about ROM manager.
(Incompatibility with many ROMs and kernels, but there must be more issues.)
I am using CWM Manager app (included in Chainfire's CF-Root kernel) or CWM5 recovery mode to create a complete system / nandroid backup.
So, in case of an emergency I only have to flash a kernel containing CWM5 recovery and restore my last system backup.
Just to be on the "safe" side, I also copied my efs folder to my external sd card.
And all my apps (+ app data) are under Titanium Backup control.
So, I recommend to use plain CWM recovery backup.
If you are not sure about ROM manager, please search the forums and make up your own mind.
Good luck !
So basically, I can instead of Rom Manager install DarkyROM2 Tool, flash some kernel with CWM support e.g. Hellcat, CF-Root, and boot to recovery and make backup of current rom(with higher compatibility), right?
Sorry if this is obvious, but I have just started with this kind of tweaks...
I have just bought an SGS2 to replace my HTC Desire.
I rooted it using SuperOneClick. It seemed to work, I can run apps requiring root now.
But the very first thing I want to do is make a nandroid backup of the phone in it's out of box state (or as close to). Is it possible?
On Desire you had to root first, then install a custom recovery such as CWM, and then do a nandroid backup from there. So I guess I will have to install CWM. But googling tells me that on the SGS2 I have to replace the entire kernel to get a new recovery, is that right? And how do I do that?
If the only way to make a nandroid backup is to install a new kernel, I guess the backup will contain the new kernel. Is it possible to go back to the out of box state with the original kernel and original recovery and no root etc.?

Just flash any of these and you'll get Super User, Busy Box, CWM, CWM Manager
CF-Root For Stock
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=14283369#post14283369
Siyah Kernel (Custom)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1263838
Speed Mod
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1182498
Flash em via Odin and you'll have CWM take a backup and you are good to flash any custom ROM
Just take note what your stock firmware and kernel is and if you ever need to send off to Samsung you can just flash back to stock using intratechs stock rom thread

I attempted to flash a rom I have downloaded from rom manager and after the recovery had backed everything up it just failed to flash and said the file was (bad)...
So I thought I would be ok and just started up again, once I got into the rom I realised that all my apps have gone and all my system data. I went to download Rom Manager from the Market but obviously my account with google was not signed in so I tried to do that.
NO KEYBOARD!
So now whenever I tap on a text box the keyboard does not appear.
I went back to recovery to try and restore my backup and it says MD5 Mismatch?
I thought I would play it safe and take off all my Titanium Backup file onto my PC so I have everything safe, but its only 10mb?! I backed everything up and there was a few MASSIVE games that took me ages to download, where have my proper backups gone?
I have a really bad feeling that my SD card is corrupted or something nothing seems to be working.
Am I going to try and use fastboot to put a decent rom on there or get the backup to work?
Any help would be a god send!
You got the right idea. Use fastboot to flash a ROM and go from there.
For sure fast boot and i would make sure and do a full fastboot wipe also might be a goos odea to test out sd caed on computer transfer filws to and from it and see of files obtain any issues or data loss

I spent a while this weekend flashing my Atrix. I don't know what version you were on but this is a relatively safe (but do it at your own risk) method to recover an Atrix to latest Stock.
If you want to go straight to a custom ROM...You can do this:
Download a ROM to your SD card (I tried Turls and Joker's...using Turls right now)
Reboot into your CWM and format your data, system and cache partitions then install from zip from your internal/external card
I like to reboot back into recovery, clear the battery stats and then reboot into the rom
If you want to go to stock...This process worked for me since I have a problem with Nandroid not restoring my /system file so I gave up on trying to use CWM for backup/restore functionality and use Titanium Backup for that. CWM still works great for other functionality....As a side effect of a failed /system restore with CWM I have a non-booting phone...
SO....my recovery for this has been:
Use the Motorola Automatic Update using a PC...It will download the 141 stock SBF and flash your phone, at this point you're basically latest stock (I flashed this over unlocked bootloader)
Unlock your bootloader using the AUTOMATIC_UNLOCK_V4.2
Re-root your phone using the /preinstall method
Restore (if you have a backup) with Titanium Backup
Then download and install a custom rom at a later time
Thanks guys but it was a ****ty SD card! Peace.

My phone unrooted and for the life of me I can't get it rooted again. I'm using the Omnirom nightlies on a Galaxy S3 GTI-9300 (4.4.4 KitKat). A couple days ago it started popping up some errors on boot (First error was something about Keyguard and then the next were about android.system crashing, every time I clicked OK the same error would reappear not letting me do anything on the device), so I went into recovery and installed the newest Omnirom nightly. It fixed the problem but I lost supersu and root access, so I tried recovery again and reflashed supersu, the mod, gapps and root still didn't take even though all flashes were supposedly successful. I also downloaded the .tar file from here galax ys3root. com/cwmtwrp-recovery/ and flashed it with Odin and even though it said it did it successfully the phone is still not rooted. After the .tar I retried flashing supersu from recovery but still no root. Oh and idk if this is relevant because it did it before I lost root access, but whenever I flash supersu with CWM it says I might have lost root access and asks if I want it to try and fix it, giving me No/Yes options. I've tried both but they don't seem to affect anything. I didn't try factory restore because I have apps with valuable data that I don't want to lose until I can back them up, but Titanium won't do it without root access.
Framework is corrupt, full wipe and reflash firmware. Use a nandroid to restore your app data with titanium.

Restoring it isn't the problem though, getting it backed is. My current backup isn't up to date and I can't make a new one without root
Nandroid happens in recovery.
