[Q] question about EFS folder and IMEI - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hi
was reading a lot about corrupted efs folder and how to backup it.
just a few questions for my personal interest:
is this efs folder restored/replaced,new written when flashing a new stock rom?
if not,is it installed from samsung and ment never to be changed?
if so,how is IMEI generated,or simply written inside a binary?
How does a service repair the missing IMEI,if corrupted?
i flashed a stock rom via odin, but different country code on my SG2,all went fine, still have correct IMEI.But does this flashing change anything within that efs folder?
thanks

No. However some people say that the efs folder is written to on every boot, so there's always a small risk that it gets damaged.

I guess Samsung could answer this question much better. From what I know: They encrypt the IMEI and write that bin file to the efs folder. So in theory, if you knew the encryption algorithm you could do that, too.

I assume that Samsung can simply encrypt the IMEI again and rebuild the directory.

Just reflash modem.
If you didn't back up your efs folder, you might be out of luck. Try flashing the stock firmware for your provider and see if that helps.

all the flashing i have done over the past year with my sgs i9000 and now sgs2 i9100 i have never seen anything todo with efs.
so no i havnt backed up that folder, that cant be the only way to fix this?
i have looked in my efs folder and there is some files with .bak in them so im thinking some of the roms ive flashed in the past may have done a backup or something?

If you are missing baseband, there can't be imei either so flashing modem should restore it.

It means you still dont have modem for some reason.
If you have flashed new kernels recently, go back to kernel which worked and then reflash modem.

When you changed CSC, Your IMEI got corrupted. Only way to restore is efs back up or reverting back to original firmware. This should work ...
If not , You may try this one , http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=837239
I was able to solve it using this method. You need to be rooted to do this ...
This will void your warranty ... so be careful.
I would definitely not recommend using a i9000 method of getting the baseband, imei back on a i9100.
The EFS folder contains critical files for the IMEI, Baseband, serial number of the phone etc.
Check in the Q&A threads and in here someone else also had the same issue and they managed to resurrect their phone with some developer support.
Good luck, only other option is a repair job and just say kies crashed through the firmware update and now the phone doesn't boot.
Please use the Q&A Forum for questions Thanks

if you arent using a pit file dont touch the re-partion box or your will screw your phone completely and dont tick the EFS box either although now that doesnt matter as its already to late.

[Q] SGS2 IMEI changed to 004999* after modem flash

Hi,
after flashing a modem, i got a "fake imei", and i can't connect to my provider.
After some search i found a thread to recover:
- copy esf to sd
- format efs
- restart
- copy imei folder and nv_data.bin.bak (from 2010) to nv_data.bin
- restart
i'm still stuck with this imei.
Is there something else to do ?
i tested this process with android 4 samsung, and 2.3.5
do i have to be in the same release than first time i used the phose ? (2.3.3)
thanks for advises/help.

Hello,
Thanks for your suggestion,
i tryed that yesterday, but as i have no backup how can this solve the problem ?
should i rename something ?
i did the few steps to format and reinstall. but it still the same.
I noticed after flashing the modem, the timestamp changed from 2010 to 2013 on the file nv_data.bin and .md5
i had a .nv_data.bak from 2010 is this the correct one ? (in the efs folder)
this is the one i'm trying to restore, if possible/correct ?

If you tried SGII_Repair I assume you've already tried this and didn't work, right?
If so, try going back to previous MODEM (back EFS folder with HC kTool first).

Not the original ROM, the last modem you used before flashing the one that got you in this mess.

Okay, so you've got 2 EFS folders, one in your SD card and the other one in system's folder, all same files in each folder, am I right?
the copy i have is a backup i did after the problem.
not sure at this time, i'm thinking to restart fresh, i'll copy /sdcard/efs to /efs and replace.
Then i'll try again gs2_repair to see if i missed something.
Woot working get my imei back and online
many thanks !!!!
backed up with ktool now

LS6 didn't work for you?
REMEMBER to BACK UP the EFS folder!
LS8 and LS6 make my imei disparear if i use getril to have the same ril/baseband
if i use ril xxlq6 with the modem LS8, my imei come back (*#06#)
but reception is very poor
i'm using CM10.1 nightly 04022013
now i'm using xxlq6 baseband and ril; it is most of the time full strength, then sometime fall to -130 DB 0 psu
but if i start a call to my second phone, it pass from -130db to full strength

You should solve the problem with a reflash the firmware. However, it is a problem common to many ROM (stocks, cooked and Sammy) :good:

I don't know Heimdall (I only know Odin). From what I know you have to do a tick on PDA and select the file .tar.md5 contained inside the .zip file! Use the Terminal to decompress the .zip

As far as i can tell your EFS Backup is Corrupted or u have lost your efs backup.
here is what you can do. try to locate efs.tar folder in your internal memory or SD card see if it is there,
secondly you can Google for restoration of EFS. this Should Resolve your Problem
Hit thanks if it helped

it should either be a folder efsbackup or a zipped/tarred file at the bottom of the directory, usually on the internal storage.

Hi
Have you tried the S2 Repair it worked for me first time ! I had blank IMEI and baseband unknown used the S2 Repair app and it worked a treat.
However when i did a kies update and software update on my phone it went back to blank and unknown and now the S2 Repair app doesnt work.
But just use the S2 Repair and it just might work and its easy to do !
I was thinking of reflashing mine and hope it works but i think my problem is with the efs folders

Hi
I have exact same problem Blank IMEI and baseband unknown.
I have just flashed GT-I9100_XEU_I9100XWKI4_I9100XEUKH2_I9100XXKI1 and still the same except lost root.
I Then flashed insecure kernel CF-Root-SGS2_XW_NEE_KI4-42-v4.2-CWM4 then secure CF-Root-SGS2_XW_NEE_KI4-v4.1-CWM4 and now have root back BUT still blank IMEI and baseband unknown
I have got a efs.tar.gz file in the internal sd card ? i think it came from a efs back up from when i used galaxy s unlock app
I also have efs_save.tar and efs_save.tar.gz in a folder named GSII repair but i am guessing these might be back ups of corrupted efs folder ??
The imei file in the root efs folder has a mps_code.dat file dated dec 25 2013
but in a back up efs folder in GalaxyS2Unlock it has the mps_code.dat file dated nov 29 2013

[REQ]EFS Partion backup file for E970 NEEDED

Guys, i need some help from you guys...i have messed up my E970 phone's network.
Actually, i messed up with its EFS parititon and now i am not getting any network in my phone. My phone is ON, everything working but it is not detecting any sim
i read on XDA forum and got that i need to replace my EFS paritions again with system actual EFS partition file.
Any user friend who has E970 and who is rooted, pls download below file and run in recovery to back up the phone's EFS parition, then pls mail me that backed up EFS parition file so that i can replace it to run my sim card:
http://dl.xda-developers.com/attach.../8/4/9/9/Optimus_G_Create_Flashable_EFSv4.zip
pls download, its only 1 MB file and it will create a single file of small size (in KBs), that file will be placed in /sd card/ EFS_backup
pls mail me that file to save my phone...pls help ppl...it will not take much of your time...help
I am under the impression (perhaps mistaken) that EFS partition contains IMEI data. If so, that is something that no one should be giving to another user.

[EFS] EFS backup/restore app for S5 [SM-G900A/F/H/T]

Hey guys, worst part about samsung devices is always their EFS issues.. my samsung tool app has already gained support for SM-G900A, SM-G900F, SM-G900H, SM-G900T before root and custom roms are available, so first thing is first, root(when available) and backup EFS!
ive kept all downloads and discussion within the original thread here! - SAMSUNG TOOL APP HERE
this was made possible by leoaudio13 dumping his partition table!
I love u mate!

thats because nothing was accessible until after root, dumping system was easy, but any other directory/file on the device wasnt able to be read after until being rooted..
samsung didnt even include tar binary so I dumped over adb, then CF helped root and then we dumped raw images!

updated.
LTE devices have a QualcommChip, where everything is stored in the nvRAM, the EFS includes only files that have nothing but absolutely nothing to do with the IMEI.

I backed up my EFS to internal storage but cant find it don't see no /data/media/SamsungTool/ (using EFS file explorer) just want to save a copy to the PC. What's the exact name of the backed up file so i can use the search feature? cheers.

For full backup, which partitions do you recommend?
Galaxy S5 SM-900P Partition table
you can still simply create a copy right?
I have always had rooted phones and my SGS 5 is no exception, it got rooted using CFroot in the carpark immediately on picking it up.
I have therefore always simply made a copy of the efs folder on to the external sd card which is then synced to my dropbox.
However I have not really kept up to date with developments in these areas, so my question is nowadays is this still enough to ensure the safety of my device and it's ability to connect to my carrier. In the past when I have had issues after flashing roms and things simply deleting the /efs folder and copying the contents of my back up into it and rebooting has always been sufficient to get my carrier back up and running is this still the case with the international SGS5 qualcomm variant or do I need to consider other elements?
When will it work for SM-G900V? I just rooted my phone today and would like to use this for my backups. I just tried it by using EFS backup and now it's stuck on a triangle with an exclamation mark that says Please Wait. Ugh! Help...
