[Q] Call recording on stock? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is there say way to add Call recording to the Galaxy S2?. I don't really care if its via a small change in the stock dialler or its an extra app I have to install.
But people keep stating that the S2 has native call recording, but if that is the case then why has Samsung not included a core app that supports it. Or at that, allowed it straight in the original dialler they provide.
So is there a fix/hack to add it to my own dialler, or would I have to get apps frp, the market to really see this working?

Anyone that knowns?

Why not just download an app from the market there are plenty of call recording apps.

Because I would prefer it working just stock, now that Samsung has actually added native support for it. But I guess I could try one of the free ones

People have reported it not working with the newer roms like KI8, KJ etc, and I am on Kj2.
But is there any call recording app people can recommend, apart from Total Recall, which I am NOT going to get regardless.

Maybe that is a old version, what about extracting the same 4 files from the current CriskeloRom version which is kj2 and put them on your phone. Make sure to wipe both caches.

Well I could do that, if I knew which 4 files it was . And so far as I can see it seems like this mod also only supports english language and not supporting the selected language of the phone. Not that it really matters considering my phone is set for english.
But what 4 files would I need to replace in that case?.

Not hard to figure out just download the zip in the linked post and look at the four files it has two are apks and two are libraries in the /system/lib directory
Off the top of my head (don't trust my memory) they were phone.apk phone_util.apk and libaudioflinger.so and libaudiopolicy.so

hmmmm ok, well i saw that but skipped over it
because on all my other roms/including stock, i dont remember it being an app,it would just auto-connect
and it was always a system apk as well
let me go check it out though
It was excluded because CM10 has absolutely nothing to do with ATT. Or any phone for that matter. So unless somebody kangs CM10 and adds in an app, it's going to always be as bare bones Android as you can get.
Essentially, CM10 isn't ever a bloat removed version of any phones stock ROM, because it's build from aosp source, so the bloat was never there to begin with, and likely wouldn't be added in anyways.

I like that app as well. That wsa the only thing I didn't like about my ROM, so I did a nandroid, restored to stock, pulled that system app, and restored my nandroid.
Lucky for you and anyone else that wants it, I just happen to have placed it in my Dropbox.
Make sure to place it in /system/app (Don't install it like a normal APK) and change permissions to rw-r--r--
You will need to manually connect to attwifi the first time if you haven't already.

the system app one, like if you're at mcndonalds , will connect to it automatically (mcndonalds is one of the stores on ATnT wifi partnerships)
if you didnt have the app, you can still connect(its free wifi no password) but you would have to first open up a browers, read the agreement, and hit accept blah blah, before you can start using the wifi. again the system app skips all that and just connects you

It also skips all the payment info at some places that still charge for WiFi, so long as it's powered by AT&T. I wouldn't mind having this feature back as well, even though I'd rarely ever use it. Honestly, my cell is faster than the WiFi at any Starbucks or McDonalds around here. But I can see a use for it while traveling. Maybe download one of the stock ROM flashable zips and just extract the necessary apk, put it in /system/app and see if it will work that way. I'd try myself, but I'm a tad busy lately and already in trouble for all my downloading this month.
EDIT: Forgot to mention, the one on Play is too bloated. I don't want that junk handling all my WiFi.

Well, Mr. Useless Retort, I was searching for this very apk and was about to download it until I looked at his stats. You see, the fact that a post is a year old doesn't make a lot of difference if it has information you need. You see, Mr Useless, that's why the forum goes back many years.
Note that my reply wasn't intended for him, it was to warn off anybody else who might think about downloading this.
See how that works??
I think you can get this apk from the market, or what I do is google for apks -- especially older ones when the market updates me and the update sucks. I haven't been burned yet.

[Q] Prepping before rooting...

I'm about to root for the first time and I've always done a backup of my stock out-of-the-box ROM before flashing anything so I don't have to rummage through threads later looking for the stock ROM for my phone to unroot to.
Coming from the Android phones I've had, Titanium was what I always used to do a full backup. Is there somewhere though, just to be safe, that has the exact ROM for my SFR GS3 I9300?
My build number is IMM76D.I9300BUALF1

Ok great. All I really want to know for sure is that when I do test any ROM for this phone I already have a complete copy of it sitting somewhere in case I ever need to sell it or return it.
Going to try some Vanilla JB (Foxhound or something). I wish there was a JB ROM that had Samsung apps but no Touchwiz. Doesn't exist apparently.

Well, all the homescreens are pretty similar in terms of app layout, etc. But also with Touchwiz I'm not crazy about the app deck, the menu system, the Samsung camera, the notifications bar, etc. Why?

They rely on the TW framework, that is why
Well, that makes sense.
Yeah, what I meant before was that pretty much every ROM looks the same when you're flipping through home screens. It's in the menu system that you really see differences and I just don't like the big blocky, slightly iOS-ish look of the menus within apps and contacts, etc.
But I would love a ROM that keeps all the motion features. And wifi tethering is a must.
Just spent a whole lot of time looking at several ROMs in original and regular Android dev forums. Is there not a single JB Vanilla that has WiFi tethering and has the motion functions? All of them seem to say tethering is not possible.
What a shame. I haven't read every last ROM but I've pretty much seen them all.
Wifi/bluetooth tethering doesn't work on aosp/cm roms but last time i used this with my sammy secondary rom to connect my tablet to the net it worked.
And if you quit the official sammy world don't care about csc its only utility is to drive samsung OTA update (mine is 'unknown' ).
Ohhhh, I see. What a shame.
So my only choice is to find a secondary Samsung ROM? I was hoping for a more Vanilla JB feel throughout the phone and also for a different camera. But I do need to be able to connect my tablet. Plus, SFR gives me an app to tether with that works quite well. Only problem is that righ now my Galaxy tab 7 with an ICS ROM isnt connecting to any local WiFi here in Paris anyway for some reason.
Well, thanks.

Optical Reader

Hey everyone, I was wondering if anyone has been able to get their hands on the Optical Reader APK. I would really like to use it, but haven't been able to find anywhere on the internets that someone has uploaded it. While I am competent in basic root, etc. I don't know how to pull this from any roms myself. Would really appreciate any help if someone has the time to upload it as an APK, since I'm not rooted. Thanks!
I have been searching for the program as well all week and I've come to a couple conclusions:
There is one individual from the T-Mobile forums looking to help us less fortunate (Verizon) users with the .APK file, but unfortunately there is a .odex attached and he hasn't gotten into deconstructing that yet.
A lot of users are suggesting downloading a program called 'CamCard' from the Samsung App Store (also removed from our phone but downloadable). While this seems like a nice substitution (which I haven't tried), it seems it's only for the business card aspect, and not the all in one package deal that optical offers.
Update: If you do decide to go with 'CamCard', you would also want to add Photo Reader, but you still lose out on translation. 2 out of 3 features ain't bad.
RUMOR: It seems that someone was able to get a hold of Samsung, and confirmed that Big Red did remove the program. From what some users are saying (from their contact with customer support) is that Verizon merely disabled the program and may push it out in a future update. I've attempted to go through every system file and folder but wasn't able to come up with anything, so most likely it's just gone.
I'll be sure to come back and update this if I read any more information.
Stay away from CamCard. It's a piece of ****. I bought it 3 years ago i think it was and when I requested support they gave none so I disputed the charges with my bank and got refunded, It's probably the worst program I ever used. Funny thing is, I can still use it an update it with no issues.
Some of the answers are above. Using Hyperdrive RLS 4 ROM, which got Optical Reader from the international version. However, when you open it, it tries to update on Samsung Apps, and gives you an error that the device does not support it, and shuts it down. Tried getting it on Samsung Apps, and again gives an error that the device does not support it. CamCard is really for business cards only. Google Goggles does not do as great a job either (at least the formating sucks). Until then, I will practice patience....

Same experience as you, (with the exception that I am running stock rooted) it appears that the file it is trying to download is a database, and it is just over 50 meg.
I've read the suggestions to download CamCard, but for me 1) It just looks shady (IMO) and 2) It looks to only be of use for business cards. So I plan on staying away from CamCard. I have used Google Goggles in the past, and while it works, Samsung's Optical Reader looks awesome, and I'm really itching to play with it. I appreciate the responses, really. Guess until someone has time to put it together, I will just have to patiently wait and continue to use Google Goggles.
Well, I guess as just a minor update:
I was able to find both the APK and ODEX files from somewhere in the depths that is XDA. I attempted to move both files into the system/apps folder and change the permissions to rw-r--r--, but after several restarts and do overs, I'm not having much luck on that front. There was one suggestions (via Hyper thread) that I would have to change the build.prop file device.name, but I would like to avoid making edits to the build.prop if possible.
Any suggestions?

Running Hyperdrive 5.0 (before it was removed in 5.5). It works for a few seconds then, I get a black screen, then "Unfortunately, Optical Reader has stopped." .. Funny thing is it is working fine up until this point (the few seconds). Almost (just almost) feels like there is a service running in the background looking for, and killing this task. Grr Verizon.
(Crappy picture attached, could not screenshot the app)
I've got the apk and odex file pulled from an ATT GS4. Not rooted (and still not ready/willing to root. Eventually, maybe), so can't just drop them in sys/apps. Try to install and it acts like it is installing, then tells me application not installed. While I am capable of properly rooting a phone, I'm still a noob in terms of porting an app. Read somewhere on XDA that it probably needs a signed key for my Verizon GS4. So now I'm reading up on android app development and how to do that. Still learning so it will be a while before I make any progress. Anyone more skilled than I am that would like to take a stab at making a distributable APK that works on my Verizon GS4? You would be my hero. I can upload the files I have if so.
Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk 4 Beta
Do NOT use the odex file. It is probably used in phones that aren't verizon and has flags, so when they mismatch on app vs device it'll FC. Let the device build its own ODEX. Likely needs to be a /system app too. Try getting a build.prop from a T-Mobile user and editing a few lines from Verizon like brand, name, device, board, etc to a T-Mobile one. (installing their build.prop might work as well but idk). You could use a ROM like Synergy to block their "phone home" stuff or something.
I'm just spouting ideas here. They may or may not work.

INCREASE DPI - Phone App FC Fix..

I want to change the LCD Density to a higher value on my Galaxy because its all a bit too small for me.
I am using an app called Resolution Changer (and have tried a few other similar apps that do the same job and work fine) to set the the phone to a higher DPI and all becomes much more usable and looks bit bigger and better on screen. Everything works perfectly smoothly except the Samsung Phone/Contacts/Messaging & Camera apps that instantly FC. The Messaging and Camera apps don't matter because I simply use a 3rd party app and the problem gets easily solved. However the Phone/Contacts app is a real problem because the phone becomes useless as "phone".. and using a 3rd party dialer doesn't fix the problem because these add-on dialers still need the native phone app to actually make/receive a call (basically Android 3rd party dialers are actually just a skin on top of the native phone app).
I have been reading that the Phone/Contacts app from 4.2 leak allows for working at higher DPI without any problems or crashes.
Could someone verify this information and if possible, post a download link of the S3 Phone/Contacts app from 4.2 so I can try? I have no idea where to get the correct Phone/Contacts apk
Thanks very much in advance for any feedback or and help in getting the correct file/s.

What I mean is if you're on 4.1.2, the 4.2 apk probably wont work, so you will need to be on the right ROM.. Also you need root if you just want the apks, they're not installable. Probably will work across all 4.2 samsung devices, but not 4.1.2 devices.

Correct. I am already on 4.2 ROMs on my devices and they are all rooted. And certainly the Phone/Contacts apps are not installable. I will just push them directly into the system/app directory and overwrite the current ones. After wipping all of their data & caches & clearing settings on some dependencies plus a reboot, I am hoping it will work. And all is backed, so the risk and liability are zero.. whatever doesn't work or renders any experiment into a failure, is just a CWM Recovery away
So all I need now is a 4.2 ROM Phone/Contacts apks from the S3 and see where that leads me to:highfive:

Oh OK.. that I know then, simple. I just asked because many ROMs and flashable image zips are just full of IMGs, TARs & BINs instead of actual individual apps and files. I will download the ROMs you suggested (if I can find them) and give it a try. If works I'll post it so other members can do the same if also wanting to chang DPI on their machines. . Thanks again very much

{APPS} Stock Apps / Priv-Apps

Since I didn't see the thread with the Stock "apps" as well as the "priv/apps" I have taken an nc5 4.4.2 rom and extracted all the apps & priv-apps and uploaded them seeing how someone was looking for them.
If someone else has already created a thread for these, shoot me.
Have an awesome day
If any are missing please add them.
Apps:

Priv/Apps:

*If you need any help on how to install a certain apk, permissions or where to put them, etc... just ask!

Thank you so much!!!!
I think I know which apps. I tried extracting the "Secmms.apk", through that into my priv-apps folder (repl;aced mms.apk) but whenever I launch it, it closes after 3 seconds.
Using the Eclipse rom, it seems they changed a bunch of things to utilize some AOSP apps. DO you know of a work around?
Thanks!

Hi
Yes I did....it would launch, but close after few sec.
I posted a msg in the forum, they said that the TW dialer, MMS, etc won't work on this ROM because of the incorporation of aosp code.
I love the ROM, seems smooth and light, but cant stand the dialer/mms...haha
It seems in my situation, the only 2 roms that have no issues where everythign works is HD and Exlipse. HD I like the interface, Eclipse, I like the smoothness, and battery life....
I'm torn
