Howdy,
Just purchased my new Samsung Tab 10.1 yesterday and successfully rooted it but havent decided on a ROM yet. But what I need right away is a good tethering app so I can use my "wifi only" Tab out in the field. Can someone please recommend a nice tethering app for my brand new 10.1?
Also, is CM7 available for the 10.1 yet? If not is there a nice ROM for the 10.1 that has risen to the top yet? I sure miss CM7.
Thank you!

If you have the 3G tab, go to Settings > Wireless and networks > Tethering and portable hotspot. Boom! There you go!
Now, if you have a WiFi only Tab, umm... you're... not supposed to be able to tether with that...
The whole point of tethering is to take a device's connection to a -mobile- network, and share it out to other devices via USB/Bluetooth/WiFi... Since a WiFi only Tab doesn't have a connection to a mobile network... yeah...
I think what you're asking is, what's a good tethering app for your -phone- so you can share your -phone's- connection to your Tab. Right? That being the case, you might want to give us some more information about THAT device, since that's the one you need to focus on.
Tethering App
You're right. My new phone will arrive this afternoon. It,s a brand new ATT Samsung Galaxy S II. And about 30 minutes after I recieve it, it will be successfully rooted.
Also, is CM7 ready for the S 2? If not, what ROM does everyone recommend?
Thank you.
OK- here is what you really want to know-
a) Your phone has CM7 [click here]
b) The hotspot created by that phone is an "ad hoc" connection, not natively supported by the SGT. To fix that you will need this. You MUST read the whole thread- it has the hint you need.
Ok, I give up. What's the hint I'm looking for?
It looks like you will need to open up that ROM in the link to get the wpa_supplicant file and replace the one on your Tab. I assume that's all that's needed to enable ad-hoc networks. The only question i have is if that file will work ok since it's from an 8.9 ROM. Be sure to backup your current wpa_supplicant file in case there's an issue.

The tab 10.1v ad-hoc fix, does work on the 10.1. Tasks ROMs do have ad-hoc enabled. Not sure if the 3.2 ROM he has enables yet, but I'm sure he'll add it. Task has been very good at adding what users need/request.
I believe I may have not worded the start of this thread correctly. Here is what I'm trying to do;
1. I have a brand new AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Smartphone with a 2gb Data plan.
2. I also have a brand new Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 Tablet WiFi ONLY.
3. I want to use the the Tablet out in the field by tethering off of my Galaxy S II Smartphone with the Data plan.
Is this what's described above? It appears to me to be the other way around. If it is does anyone know a thread or App that let's me tether my Tablet off of my Smartphone?
Thanks...
That's exactly what they're saying. First you need to use any application (it might even support it natively) that enables your S2 phone to make an 'ad-hoc' connection.
BUT your Tab won't natively support connections like that, so you have to use one of the fixes provided in this thread to enable it (replacing your wpa_supplicant file with one that supports ad-hoc connections should do the trick).

HI i bought Samsung Galaxy S from Tmobile today
anyway my question is about WIFI TETHER, i have root it i think coz i see SUPERUSER PERMISSION
then i install wifi tether then this is what happen. I CLICK WIRELESE TETHERING it show running but then i could not get my laptop to work or connected
and it show download 0.0KBPS all the time
how can i fix this and make my WIFI TETHER WORKS
please help
im running 2.0.5-pre7 on my Vibrant. Seems to work perfect.
What version are you running?
Also, be sure that your laptop can use "AD-HOC" networks as the tether app sets the phone up that way.
I know that my Nook can not use adhoc - therefor cant even see the tether network.
I would seriously recommend getting rid of WT or Barnacle (big fan of both) and use the tether app that was on the international galaxy that was removed from the carriers.... here is where I found it. It is truly a lot better!

Take note, this is not an app in your drawer, its in your settings (first post explains it). I dont think you will have ANY issues with it.
you have to be rooted to use it.
Perhaps every one knows about the functions of wifi direct and how useful it is, on galaxy s2 it is very simple to connect the device to others with the same capability of wifi direct as you can find it in settings menu,
how about galaxy tab 10.1? although I could not find anything in the menu but still have the question if it is possible to use the device on wifi direct??
on some websites I saw wi-fi direct as a spec of galaxy tab 10.1, but could not find a clue on how to use it
I tried the Wifi Direct with my SGS2 and GT10 but it didnt work
On some website i read that Samsungs Implementation of WI-FI Direct is not like it should be because you can only connect with devices that have this feature.
According to the Specifications from the Wi-Fi Alliance only one device needs to have the Wifi Direct feature. EDIT: And this may be the reason why the GT10 doesnt have it

on the official galaxy tab specs site it says (wifi direct ) http://www.samsung.com/global/microsite/galaxytab/10.1/spec.html
where the F is this feature in our tab
Missing WiFi direct on Gtab 10.1
I was just noticing that, too. I have the Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus with Android v3.2 on it, and there's an extra option in the "Wireless and networks" settings area for "WiFi Direct settings" but on the Galaxy Tab 10.1 with Android v3.2 that option is not present. I'm betting the functionality is present but it's just missing the required setup function. I noticed, also, that WiFi Direct is listed on the 10.1's specs. Unfortunately, no firmware-update love appears to be forthcoming from Samsung for the original Tab 10.1.
Look,
There is the Galaxy Tab 7.0, which I Would think, doesn´t have this options,
but now you have the galaxy tab 7.0 plus, with more features than the earlier model,....
So If there would be a galaxy tab 10.1 plus, the feature is guaranteed there included...., or a firmware update/upgrade comes..... and incude it....
greets
Since the new GS3 advertises their new S-Beam feature which uses WiFi Direct heavily, perhaps it would be to their benefit to make sure as many Samsung products have Wifi Direct enabled.
I wonder if NFC must be present in order for that to work entirely or not.
I have succeeded in getting a Wi-Fi Direct connection between two HC 3.2 10.1's (both P7510). Much good as that may be. I was not running any specialised software but could connect cleanly.
Disadvantage: after disconnect from Direct Wi-Fi the machine kept on scanning for Wi-Fi connections, even though the 'normal' Wi-Fi was switched off. A reboot fixed this.
I've had my GT since it launched and I'd have to say I'm really enjoying it. But with only having the 16GB WiFi version, I've felt the need to tether to my phone, but for some reason, while broadcasting, the device isn't recognized on my tab.
My phone I'm running Wireless Tether on my Fascinated running SC 2.9.2, and my Tab is completely stock with the touchwiz update.
I don't have any issues tethering any of my computers to my phone, but just not sure why the tab wont recognize the network.
Any ideas?

Does Wireless Tether provide an actual AP or is it adhoc mode?
Android's built-in tethering support does provide actual AP mode, at least on the Infuse 4G.
All the tether apps in the market are ad hoc. There are 2 fixes. Custom rom on phone, or root the gtab and install the supplicant patch you can find in the forums.
My wife runs the built in hotspot with the acs swiss cheese rom and it works fine on her stock gtab 10.1.

I'm using native Android tethering on my phone and it works great with the Tab.
On AT&T phones, you need to remove tethermanager.apk - it's bigbrotherware that disables tethering if you're not on a tethering plan. Don't know what the Verizon equivalent is.
Basically all "cooked" ROMs remove this as one of their first orders of business, at least for AT&T phones.
I have an un-rooted DroidX and after I paired it with my Galaxy tab, I noticed an option to Connect to device Internet Access. It works great for getting to the Market and web browsing. Some programs don't recognize the connection as a "wi-fi" connection however, programs like Google Music and Plex. But NetFlix does!
I tether my Samsung Vibrant to my galaxy tab 10.1 using the pdanet tablet version. You need to download this same tablet version both on your phone and the tab. It works flawlessly for me and I didn't need to download any other apks from unknown sources.. Try using the App and tell me how it worked!

@Mitchmoney - Does that require rooting the Vibrant?

I had to edit my wpa_supplicant file on my Tab 10.1 to get tethering working off my Sony Ericsson X10. I think I still have the modified file floating around, do you want it?
mien works fine, i just used the standard wireless access point app on the phoneq
Thanks markp99, it looks like my outdated wireless tethering app on my phone was the culprit. After upgrading to the version you posted, the Tab saw the network without a problem and it connected and worked great.
Thanks!
Nope, both my vibrant and my tab are both stock! Make sure you download that same pdanet tether app on both devices for it to work if you want to try it out!

Stock ROMs in the US typically have "bigbrotherware" that disables native tethering and frequently reports third-party tethering apps. This is how AT&T can nail iPhone tetherers within minutes of their first tether but they still haven't sent me a nastygram.
Native tethering on a debloated/decrippled ROM is the way to go, stock carrier ROM is not.
I just got my tab yesterday and have a rooted epic with the wireless tether from the market. I cant get mine to recognize the hot spot either. Still researching

Hello all,
I currently have the iPhone 4 and I hate it. I want to move up to the S3 but the only thing preventing me puling the trigger is tethering.
Currently I have a jail broken iPhone and MyWi installed for free tethering. Is there an alternative to MyWi for the S3? Can a rooted S3 be a WiFi hotspot (Infrastructure not AdHoc)?
Thanks in advance,

Rooting an android phone allows you tether without most carriers noticing.
Depends on carrier also

Ok, awesome answer!
Here is another question. Is there a TuT out there to root and tether? Is it AdHoc or Infrastructure? I need infrastructure as my stock Nook can not connect to AdHoc.
Thanks in advance.
Open Garden Tethering is amazing for a rooted phone. Kinda slow (but that's because my LG Ally is slow, and it only has 3G)
My phone has tethering built in as stock and yes it is infrastructure. My phone is from the UK if that affects your question
Some carriers in some countries like to remove or restrict the tethering option. If you're not in such a country then tethering ie. Portable Hotspot is available by default in Android. There is not need to root or install any special app.
When activated your phone will appear as a regular wireless network, ie. infrastructure.
@JSale i am awesome?
in addition we've set up a network on a demonstration with 10 sgs3 on the same tethered connection, so clients number is not limited to 5 like it was on sgs2

I think it may. Knowing the nickle and dime mentality of the US Carriers, I can see them disabling that function in the OS.
If it is built into the OS and then disabled by the carrier could a Rooted Device be re-enabled?

Has anyone had any issues with tethering with the S3? Used to have a GalaxyS on the Three network and it was fine. Got the S3 and it constantly drops net access. Connection between the phone and my laptop is fine, but there are issues with DNS server etc. and on the same network. had a new handset yesterday after advice and help from Three and Samsung and still the exact same issue.
They seem clueless. Does anybody have any idea what the issue could be and has anyone else had the same problem? Tethering via wifi hotspot or usb cable is the same.
Sorry, maybe I should mention that tethering is allowed on my plan.
Does anyone have any idea at all please?
anybody? anyone else had this issue?
i'm having issues with tethering.
If i set security to open it seems to be ok. With any level of security my windows 7 pc cannot connect via wifi.
i've read comments on other forums regarding problems with this.
I've not been able to test out my S3 tethering on 3 yet. Have you had any luck since? I have noticed that the connection while surfing on the phone keeps dropping though.

If you use an International Galaxy S3 (GT-I9300) on AT&T you can tether for free anyway. You can also get away with paying $10 a month for Unlimited Internet.
No need for root. Tethering is already built into the menus.
Had to return the phone and cancel my contract in the end. Three uk say it's a software issue with samsung. I have flagged it with samsung.

Wireless tethering (called portable Wi-Fi hostpost in the settings) worked fine on my international unlocked phone out of the box (no rooting, installing apps, etc.). I'm a bit frustrated I can't connect to AdHoc networks though, but that's an android issue. At least I found a way to use my home computer's internet on the phone via usb with 'reverse tether'.
Tethering the S3
I seem to be having the same problem when tethering using the security option under ONLY ALLOWED DEVICES,
Security is configured under WPA, WPA PSK, and WPA2PSK, i get as far as adding these settings to the ALLOWED ONLY LIST, but when you go to connect on the Wi-Fi screen, and where it says Only Allowed Devices, it says NO DEVICES,
And so the only way to make it works is by using the OPEN option, but be warned this will allow outside users to tap in to your network.
Contacted Samsung on three occasions up to today, all they would confirm was that using the OPEN setting would compromise your security, ive asked them to confirm that the security Only Allowed option does actually work in real time , ive asked them to configure it at their end and tell me the step by step method.
will report back what they say.
I did take the phone back to the shop to get them to configure this secure setting, they failed and said try and cope with the open setting for now.
Reading the above posts that Three have said its a software problem doesnt sound good, sounds like im going to have to return mine as i do internet banking.
any news that you guys have on this aspect would be wellcome.
Cheers,
PS, i should say i am tethering to a Sony Vaio windowes 7
I use wifi tethering everyday. I would like to upgrade my gtablet from Vegan to a JB rom. I see where someone mentioned Team DRM's rom was capable but I'm not familiar with their phones. I have Samsung Galaxy Prevail 3g and it is only capable of Adhoc and not Infrastructure. Does anyone know which JB rom would be best for me given the info I have provided? Thanks so much
I solved this myself. I am using the Smootbean rom and after experimenting I am using Open Garden for the tether app. I set to use the Samsung Fascinate Device Profile and in Change Setup-Method I have Softap for Samsung (master) checked. This works most of the time and almost always connects. This is also on a Samsung Galaxy Prevail
