Installing .apk without SD card - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi.
I have Chinese Star A5000 phone running Android 2.2.1 Froyo.
The SD card reader is broken, so I don't have external memory.
Is it possible to install .apk applications on it, and how ?
Thanks.

The market doesn't require external storage, but some apps do. You shouldn't have a problem downloading straight from the Market.
Sent from my Evo + MIUI using Tapatalk!

I'm using the Market without problem.
The app I'm trying to install is not in the Market, I only have the .apk file.

use adb from a PC & a usb cable
google install apk with adb if you dont know the code to type, you should find so good info if you read a little
good luck

You could sideload it (install it straight from your pc). It can be done easily with this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1063073. Just make sure the drivers for your device are installed on your PC.

I've been busy for the past few days, and now finally found some time to try the program.
Thanks, it worked .

try taking out the sd card to download
no luck. it states that it requires an SD card. I tried downloading it from Appplanet and still no luck but ive been able to get other stuff installed and going....home switcher, dolphin HD, facebook, ADW launcher...and so on...
What version of android are you running? You shouldn't be having that much trouble with it. Other options are to find an .apk and install either with a file explorer or installer app.

[Q] Installing apps on spare phone without data connection

Hi all
My main phone is my new HTC Sensation, and I have all my regular apps installed on there (via the Android market, using my Google account).
My old phone - Rooted HTC Hero - I keep as a spare, and use only when I am travelling overseas, to put a local SIM Card into.
My question is, can I install apps on the spare phone on an ad-hoc basis, without using my regular Google account?
Ideally, downloading .apk files for Android market apps?
As it's only a spare, and mainly used for voice not data, i don't really want all the same apps as on my main phone, just some of them -things like Go SMS, JuiceDefender, etc
Also currently, the plan I have with the local SIM card I'm currently using has no data - only voice. So apart from connecting it via my laptop, I could only install apps using free wifi.
Thanks in advance!

No. You need to use a Google Account to download any app from the android market. You don't need to use your regular one, but you still need to use one to download the apps. So, it would make more sense to just use your regular account to do it.
You could just download the apps apk transfer them to your memory card then install via a app like astro file manager that way u would have the apps backed up on the card

Thanks... if I use my same Google account on the spare phone though, will it recognise all the apps I have downloaded to my main phone, and try to download them all again??
What about if I remove any, will it try to remove them from the main phone also?
For example - on my main phone I have maps and IM apps, but I don't want or need those on my spare phone...
Or in other words - are the apps downloaded and removed, device specific? Or syched the same between devices on the one Google account?

If i'm not wrong, you can download titanium backup...
Backup apps on 1st device and transfer them over to 2nd device

Am not sure about what will happen to already downloaded apps but your other device will add as a new device and the apps you install from now forward will be separate. If installing from Web, you will be prompted to choose a device. In mobile, the app will be downloaded to the phone you use to download. The market can distinguish between two different devices unless they are of the same model.

He's saying that you download and install the apps normally to your main device, the use an app to back them up to your sd card, then you can send them to your secondary device (either via bluetooth, or send them to your pc and transfer them to your other device).

[Q] Viewpad 7e and Market

Hello there.
I recived a brand new ViewPad 7e (the lowcost tab from ViewSonic) yesterday. Everything works fine (or, almost fine for that price...), but the 7e come without AndroidMarkets (nor Gmail apps, Google Account etc...). It's possible to use alternat market, but I'm looking to use the original one (and, most important, to set up a google account synchronysed with calendar) anyone got an idea to install that ? (I tried some trick for Archos etc... but nothing seems to work atm).
If somone got an idea... thanks in advance
My guess would be that it's missing the gapps framework, you can try installing the architecture independant gapps package from CM7, which "should" work.
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Latest_Version/Google_Apps
Well, it worked by installing the gapps manually, the last point will be to put the market 3.1.3 or so (for the moment I only have th old one), thx again for your help.
Where can I find how to install gapps manually
you said it's possible, where can I find the steps to install it manually?
Thanks

Hi, I also get a Viewpad 7e, and download the Google Apps from CM7
But I could not install in manually after I unpack the Google Apps package.
System will say it is an invalid APK.
Could you help to release the package you install and installing steps?
Thanks.

Guys, cm7 market would not work for our devices as it doesnot meet the criteria for having google market. Yes is ironic but for now we have to rely on the market we have. We have to wait till someone make cm7 work forr our viewpad.
there's a way but i need to translate it because its in chinese i got it it on mine
charlies1112, if you can, it would be really nice to explain how you did it.
Yesterday, I was able to root the viewpad 7e using Gingerbreak v1.20.

Cannot install apps from amazon app store

I have the amazon app store installed on my Nook tablet but none of the apps will install (tried 5 different ones). I keep getting the following error message:
'The application was not able to install onto your device. Please "Archive" and then "Unarchive" the application to try again.
I obviously have allow unknown sources checked and also have a 8 GB Micro SD card installed which the Nook tablet recognizes. Any ideas on why I am getting the error message above? Thanks for any suggestions.
Are you doing App Install or Package Install? If anything, try re-installing the Amazon Appstore. Good luck
By any chance, are these apps that you bought and installed previously on another device? I had that problem with the Kindle app but not with a couple of others. I tried one or two other methods too, and finally had success getting Kindle from a free software website.
did you try resetting the nook? i didnt have the EXACT same issue but i did have issues downloading things and a simple reset fixed all of that for me. i still have things that say "this is not compatible with your device" which is crap because i sideloaded the .apks of the same apps that WERENT from the amazon store and they worked just fine.
That sounds like what happens when you use app installer rather than Package Installer.

I've just rebooted my nook Tablet to see if that fixed my problem, which is the same as the OP's except I haven't been able to install ANY .apks after setting the "allow 3rd party apps" checkbox.
Specifically, I'm trying to get mobovideo to install, also four or five other video players, and Amazon Marketplace. I can download all of these no problem, but when I click on the download it tells me it can't install and says something about trying to "Archive then Unarchive" the file and try again. Which I would try if I knew where downloaded .apks go...I did find my second Am Market download (fat fingered the install so downloaded twice) under My Downloads, but the only option I get when I touch it is "Delete".
I'm downloading all this stuff on the device. Is that my problem? Does the sideloading need to be done from a microSD?
Thanks!!!

Here is an apk of Moboplayer that I installed no problem on nook tablet.
Just ran a quick test -- While some apps won't load due to incompatibility, the couple of successful tests I did worked fine. I did do them as package installs.
This is using a sideloaded copy of the Amazon Market.
The fix was to take the micro sd card out of the Nook and delete the entire contents of the card and then reinstall the amazon app store. All apps install fine now. Strange since I deleted the contents of the card before inserting it originally. Not sure why I had to do it again...

When an app is incompatible, do you get a message like the ones we've been posting, or something more helpful?
Can anybody comment on my using a direct download rather than sideloading via microSD? Is this simply not the way to do it?
bkerk25 -- thanks, I'll give that apk a try in the morning and let ya know
I have used both sideloading and direct download with few issues at all. Some apps simply won't install right now either way. I have recieved the same error message you described a couple of times.
Sent from my BNTV250 using xda premium
It's a light error message that states the program is not compatible with my device. No details on why
Alrighty. I'm not sure what's different, but I went back to comptonsoft.com/test/ and tried downloading AppMenu. This time it worked, I was able to install it and view the "secret" options which I haven't seen since the initial attempt, and am now browsing Amazon Apps. I hadn't attempted to go back to that app since rebooting, so maybe that's what I needed to do. Also, I was habitually hitting App Installer first, then Package Installer when that failed, so I dunno, maybe that messes things up.
Anyway, thanks for this great workaround xda folken!

I'm having the same problem. I've tried:
Removing and replacing the sd card
Using a different sd card
Trying to install all kinds of different apps
Resetting the device
Reinstalling the amazon app store (actually, I get the same error when i try to install even that or Appmenu now)
Factory reset
Nothing works and it's very frustrating. I think I might try to exchange it for a new one, unless someone here has a better idea

This all worked perfectly on my Viewpad 7e with one small issue when copying the 3 .apk files to the /system/app folder, make sure they are not a 0kb size. If they are just recopy them over and overwrite the files and it should copy correctly with a valid size.
The market wont have allot of apps since the device doesn't support the market natively, so I did a few tricks to get most of my apps on to the Viewpad 7e. You will need to have access to a second Android devices to do the following.
1) Install File Expert (free in the market) on your second Android device
2) Open File Expert and go to My Apps and select the apps you want to install on your Viewpad 7e, then click Backup on the bottom menu. This will creat the .apk files to install on your Viewpad 7e and put them on your SD card.
3) Copy the .apk files from SD card to your Viewpad 7e
4) Open a file manager on your Viewpad 7e and install your apps.
Most apps will work ok but some will bug out and you might be forced to reboot the viewpad 7e (press and hold the power button until it powers off)
If you use Titanium Backups it will install and allow you to restore apps and data, but be warred this will not work 100% so only use it to restore the data not the apps.
Note: If your app was installed on your SD card when your backup was done when you restore the data it will make the app unlaunchable. This should be fine if you move the app to SD card before restoring the data.
Here is a list of my working apps on my Viewpad 7e
aLogcat
androidVNC
Angry Birds (all 3)
Blogger
Chrome to phone
Coin Dozer
Google Docs
Documents To Go
Facebook and Messenger
File Expert
Gmail
Google+ and Messenger
Google Maps, Latitude, Places
MarketEnabler
Google Reader
Root Explorer
Tapatalk
Titanium Backup (debugging error and hangs on restoring some apps)
Google Translate
Twitter (acted odd on first run and needed to reboot, opened fine after)
Vplayer
My Country
The Sims 3
Pocket Legends
Star Legends
Youtube
Order and Chaos
I will add more apps to the list as I test them.

Hey,
at first thx for the great HOWTO. Everything worked fine for me. The only thing that also bothers me is the memory problem as often mentioned before.
Perhaps its good to know that I'm from Germany and have a branded Device from strato . But before I began with your instructions I installed the official update FV70_VSEI_S_W_C_11252011 so everything should normally worked.
The only thing that makes me curious is that the widget of the apps that were preinstalled by strato are still there. Is there a possibilty that you have to clear the dalvik oder whatsoever cache before the market works without memory problems?
Go to the link, update to 28112011 file. Root it and instal
The market. I have no problems downloading apps from google play but if you see apps that are writtem not compatible, you have to download from one mobile market

The probleme is not that there is no space on device, but that there is no space in "/cache"
The easy workaround is copying /cache/recovery elsewhere on your SDcard or device (to back it up) and deleting it from /cache/
After that everything work fine ...
NB : If you want to restore factory settings, don't forget ... recopy the recovery directory in /cache
It won't brick because there's bootloader that let you reboot with actual settings or loading an update.
NB2 : I haven't had time for now but there's a 2GB unused partition... let's see ...
Ot;
I followed every Point and was able to move the Cache link to sd-Card.
My question goes to the developers. Is there any work on custom Rom eG bootloader or Even cm Mod?i tried to theme it but with no succsess.
Please dev's. Dont forget us viewpad 7e Users.
Since ViewSonic has no clue what adb is I gave this tablet to my kid since that's what this tablet is "A TOY". I will no longer be dealing with this tablet or company and have purchased a ASUS TF300T and will start developing for that tablet.
