[Q] Name Display on HTC doesn't work - HTC EVO 3D

hey guys!
Does it occur to you that name display doesn't work on htc evo? (ie displays someone's name whose phone # is not listed in your contacts). My evo 3d is a unlocked rogers gsm version.
I tried all settings and apparently it doesn't show me any names, it only shows the phone number of the caller. I am not sure whether it's the carrier's problem or the phones itself. It would suck that a $600 phone doesn't support this basic feature
Thanks a lot guys!

I don't know any phones that I have had has such psychic function of knowing / displaying callers names whose number isn't included in the contact list.
What phone were you using before?

He's talking about Caller Id... Which most cell phones don't use; you'll get the telephone number and sometimes the location of the caller but that's all.

Yup, caller ID/name display
It only displays the number where it use to display BOTH caller name and phone number. I had another phones before (iphone, sony arc) and they support this feature

Get the White Pages app from the market. I have it and when someone calls me from a number I don't have saved it shows me the names of who owns the number along with location.
Sent from my double barrel Shooter. BANG!

Unknown Caller

Hello I have a HTC Fuze currently running Titanium 28005.
I am wondering if anyone else has had this problem also. When someone calls me from a cell phone if they are in my contacts or not it comes up as Unknown Caller but if someone calls me from a land line it will come up as it should.
I have tried installing Titanium 28005 and 21877 , Standard 28005 and 21877 also the Leo EnergyROM and still no matter what I do it comes up as Unknown Caller.
Everything I have tried to do:
Install different Roms
Hard Reset
Soft Reset
Deleting all of my contacts and putting them in again. With or without area codes and 1 with area codes.
Tried NRGZ28 Tachi Dialer Disabler.
Tried searching xda-developers with google.
I am sorry if I am being a "noob" or something and if I seem like I am bableing on I am just trying to give as much info as I can.
Caller Display falls into two major categories:
Landline
The majority of landline service providers include Caller Name Display (CallID) as part of their service offering. When someone wishes to keep their number private, they must pay a fee. Note that some landline service providers split the service offering as follows:
Display telephone number (usually free)
Display telephone number and name (enhancement, fee)
Cellular
As cellular telephone numbers are private by default, most subscribers (you) must be pay a fee to provide the number. Many cellular service provider "include" the feature as part of a basic (voicemail, sms, etc.) cellular feature package.
The majority of cellular service providers do not include Caller Name Display (CallID) as part of their service offering. The cellular subscriber must pay a fee to receive the telephone number of the calling party.
What this means:
When you call a landline number, your number would be displayed providing the providing the following rules are met:
You have not requested privacy.
The caller cellular service provider offers the number (and name) to other telco networks.
The landline customer is able to receive number (and name) display via their landline service provider.
You are paying for the Caller Name Display feature.
Your device is capable of processing number (and name) information.
When you call a cellular number, your number would be displayed providing the other cellular customer is paying for the service to display telephone numbers (and names).
You have not requested privacy.

Your cellular service provider offers CallerID - some providers only offer number display, other offer number and name (CNAP).

HTH,
Update: What it is, is that when ever a Verizon cell phone calls me it comes up as unknown caller. As an example when my girlfriend calls me (AT&T Phone) it comes up with her contact info. When ever a friend with Verizon calls me it comes up as Unknown Caller. I have tested this with all of my friends that are on Verizon My girlfriend has the same problem on her LG Vu that still stock nothing has been done to the phone, but my mothers phone works when a Verizon phone calls her. I have not changed anything on my bill or anything in the past 2 years only thing I have done is change phones.
Everything was working just fine in till Saturday I started getting the unknown caller problem. My friends have also mentioned that when they call me they hear a wired noise like a computer trying to connect to the internet thorough dial up then it starts to ring.
I contacted AT&T today and they are looking into the problem. It might have something to do with them merging with Centennial Wireless
I will keep people posted if they are interested in knowing what come out of it. And if someone can throw in there two cents on what they may think it to be be my guess I am willing to try anything. I hate now knowing who is calling.
Next time you speak with AT&T, ask them to "repush" your SIM profile as well to eliminate the possibility of profile corruption.
HTH,
I received a call from a Verizon line yesterday, this morning actually a little after midnight. Showed up. I am on AT&T.
Update: I just Re-Flashed the orignal HTC Rom that they provide on there website
(HTC FUZE RUU Raphael Cingular US 5.11.502.2 Radio Sign Raphael 52.64c.25.35 1.14.25.35 Ship)
And had my friend call me and everything came up as it should so it might be the rom I flashed to my phone witch was Phoenix 2 28005 11-27-2009
altho att might have done something with out contact me so i am going to re flash the Phoenix 2 28005 11-27-2009 and check
Update: Ok flashed Phoenix 2 28005 11-27-2009 and everything is working as it should. I don't know if AT&T did something or not but now when someone on Verizon calls me it comes up as it should.
when it comes unknown caller, is it display their number just below unknown caller?

[Q] Area Codes in Caller IDs

I have searched for this and found the same question posted in a HD2 Android category, but there were no responses... so asking for myself in here.
I have all my phone numbers listed in my contacts with the preceeding area code, as I often travel outside of the local area and need those area codes included in my contacts numbers..... ie: all my phone numbers are 10 digits in length.
However, there doesn't seem to be a requirement for the area code to be sent, when a caller has Caller-ID enabled. In other words, I receive some calls from contacts in my phone, but if their phone doesn't include the area code in their Caller-ID, then my phone doesn't recognise or identify the number. Consequently, when hanging up from those calls, it constantly asks me if I want to save the number.
Note - it isn't a permanent thing. Many incoming calls DO identify correctly, as the area code has obviously been sent with C-ID.
Does anyone have a solution for this?
Obviously I COULD go thru every contact and manually add another non-area-coded phone number - perhaps under an obscure phonebook entry, like "pager"... but surely this is something that one would expect be handled automatically by the phone... not by duplicating entries as a work-around.
What would happen for business-people who travel internationally - most of their contacts would also include the "+61" (or whichever) country code also.....
Nobody ???
Bumping again ????
Anybody have any clues to this?
Did you try disabling the Area Code Prefix setting in Settings -> Call Settings ?

Thanx mate for your reply.
Sorry took so long.... my phone has been in for warranty repair (unrelated matter to this) for the last 7 weeks, so I haven't logged onto xda in that time !!!
No..... I haven't tried disabling the AC Prefix setting. I will have a look at that and see if it makes any difference.
One additional comment..... I am also having the REVERSE problem.... in that SOME people who ring me on their mobiles, the caller ID is also sending the +61 (Australia) country code in front of their mobile number too.... so again, my phone isn't recognising them as being the "same" number as what is stored in my phonebook ????
Will try the disable thing you mention and report if it works.
Sorry mate... cannot find the setting you mention.
Could you explain please exactly where it is ?

Or you could turn off having the phone ask to to add the number to your contacts.
On the US T-Mobile phone it is:
Activate phone screen
Menu
Options
Menu
Network Selection
Advanced tab
Turn off the feature to "Add new phone number to People at end of call"
I'm using the NRG ROM.
Thanks stevedebi.
Sorry - I mite not have been properly clear.
The issue isn't being asked to save a new number.
The issue is.... the phone does not recognise a number - mobile or landline - if there is an area-code or country-code prefixed to the number (or vice versa) with the entry in the phone book.
Eg: ALL my contacts saved in my phone have their mobile numbers WITHOUT the +61 country code.... and ALL landline numbers are saved WITH area-codes.
Now - depending on my contact's phone operators, they sometimes send with, or without, those prefixes in their caller ID's.
Consequently - on those occasions.... my phone does not recognise incoming calls or messages as having come from my contacts, due to the extra numbers at the beginning.
Surely this is a software issue from HTC? I mean, surely the software should be able to query an incoming called ID (either with or without prefixed-codes) with a saved number in the contacts/phonebook (with or without prefixed-codes)... ???
Bumping again ?
Sorry to be repetitive.... still looking for an answer to this ???
Check you registry setting for "HKCU\Control Panel\Phone\CalIidMatch" value=?!?
try to reduce the number for "Value" by 1 and try.
This is for the number of digits your phone will check when comparing incoming numbers with stored names.
Thanx Omar,
Will try that. Question though.... does it check the phone number (by number of digits) in reverse order? ie: setting a particular number will have no effect, if it checks in normal forward order, as it's PREFIXES that are making things wrong.... so the phone needs to ONLY check the LAST 10 digits.... not the first 10. This will eliminate the issue with any country-code added to the front of a number... but will not help with a local area code, as these are dependent on the callers' carrier, if they send the area code in the CID or not
From my experience with my HTC phones, it checks the last digits.
I have number saved with the +974 international code (for Qatar), & when local call come in, they only show the local format (without +974) & the caller ID still recognises the names. Our local numbers are 8 digits, so I have the registry value set at 7 or 8 & it works fine.

[Q] Caller ID Issue - displays as PayPhone (Rogers/Fido/International users beware)

I'm running an unlocked and rooted Atrix on Fido in Canada and have noticed a peculiar problem. Whenever a call is made to me from my landline at home, the Caller ID displays "Pay Phone" instead of the contact associated with that number. This does not happen with my wifes iPhone or my old HTC Desire HD. Other landline numbers show up properly, but this (and one other number) keep showing up as "Pay Phone". I've tried removing the number from the associated contact, but it keeps showing up as "Pay Phone".
Anyone else seen this with their Atrix? Any helpful suggestions?
Cause Determined: See this post for more details:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=11726211&postcount=6
Installed TrueCaller on my Atrix - this does report the number correctly but the font is pretty small and not too readable.
It seems like the number is being transmitted, but the stock caller ID app has a bug that causes it to display "Pay Phone". Looking around on the web shows it may be a Rogers/Fido network - Stock caller ID app issue that may be the root of the problem.
If anyone is on the Fido/Rogers network, are you seeing this sort of behaviour on your Atrix?
I'll be able to let you know later in the week. I should have mine on Rogers by mid-week.

Thanks for using TrueCaller!
/Team TC
This happened to me earlier today. I'm on Rogers.
Caller called from north on Mississauga road - a business (I was expecting it). Big office, many trunks in the building. I've never had it display as PAY PHONE before though today it did.
This isn't happening from all calls, just this one so far.
I think the Motorola support folks have found the root of the problem. It looks like there is a bug in the Atrix Dialer app that makes it behave incorrectly and display "Pay Phone" without the number if you have Caller ID with Name Display enabled with your carrier.
Rogers(and Fido) is the only North American carrier (I think) that has the option to give you the Name Display along with Caller ID. The fix for now is to get Rogers/Fido to enable Basic Caller ID (without Name Display) and then the numbers will start showing up. It sucks to lose Name Display and I hope the Motorola development team will have a fix for it at some point.
BTW, this will affect any carrier worldwide that has the Name Display option with Caller ID.
FYI - here's a thread I've had going on the Motorola Support forums.

Yes, I found it happened only on certain numbers, not on all.
How did you get True Caller - did you sideload it? I can't get it from the market

TrueCaller is available from the market. The only issue with it is that the Caller ID number is displayed only for 1-2 rings. Unless I am waiting for it, I'm not fast enough to see the number with TrueCaller until the call ends.
If the caller ID problem really annoys you (like it did me), you should ask Rogers to remove the Name Display option from your Caller ID.
i got the same problem, grrrrrrr
any way of getting the dialer from another build of android?
this sucks, i hate that all calls are as Pay Phone

name display is a feature that you can add or remove from the basic caller id, it shows up the names of people calling who are not on your contact list. if you ask for it remove and someone that is not on your contacts calls you then you will only see the number. just make sure that you still have caller id without name display.

Thanks Tested and it works!
Anyone tested to see if the new firmware fixes the issue?
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
the update wont fix this as its not a problem with bell and at&t atrix. doubt they are ever going to do anything about this unless the phone comes to a carrier with name display.
Maybe, but it would be nice to get a confirmation from a rogers customer

view blocked numbers? alternative to TrapCall

does anyone know any way to view private/withheld/unknown numbers? TrapCall does this, but its a monthly paid service.. does anyone have any other solutions?
I will love to get this app as well
Thank You
i didnt even know it was possible to hav an app that can reveal blocked numbers but wow how dodgey! being able to see all the blocked numbers VERY cool though would definately come in handy
sorry i cant answer your question
this explains all:
"TrapCall.com lets people rig some AT&T Inc. and T-Mobile USA phones so that if a call comes in with blocked Caller ID and is rejected, it rings again, this time displaying the number of the caller."
and this:
"Calls with blocked Caller ID have never been perfectly anonymous. Calls to 1-800 numbers are unmasked, for instance, because the recipient pays for the call. This appears to be the loophole used by TrapCall"
via
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/29267785/
The World Of Whooming
It opens a new door for the mobile technology: the world of whooming. No more anonymous calls and prank calls cause this program is able to identify the number of person that on the phone display will appear as “anonymous”. All totally free and without particular effort. Firstly you must register and wait for the arrival of an anonymous call; when in arrives, simply press the red button to reject and immediately you will automatically be sent an e-mail that says the number of the caller. Thinks that this will make a clean break of anonymous calls, a problem that today has become increasingly especially in young people and women. Try to believe!
