You can find the corresponding ogg files on your phone in /system/media/audio/notifications/
But you have to browse into the root of your phone's filesystem, so use a Root Explorer or similar (I am using ES Datei-Explorer on a rooted phone).

Thanks for the quick reply, but...it isn't possible without root access? I have been explicitly forbidden to root my phone by my boss :S

Depends on what you want to do.
If you want to modify, change or delete them, then you need root.
If you only want to read or play them, then you do not need root.
Goto Settings menu => Sounds => Notifications.
I guess that this is not what you want.
Without root, it is not so easy to access these system files.
P.S.: Does your boss allow a temporarily rooting?
You can root your phone, access the notification files, and un-root your phone again.
Here is a good description on how to root your phone => http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
Have a look at the first post where it is written "Quick Root Guide".
Unrooting will be done with flashing back the stock kernel.

I'll try the quick root guide. Tbh, my mom wanted my sms notification sound (yeah, I'm 37. Yeah, I still try to please my mom. Yeah, get over it hehe )

Worked like a charm. Thanks

Strange Problem with Rooting Vibrant

I have a T-Mobile version of Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant.
I followed a guide here:
forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=7150299&postcount=1
I can get into the recovery menu and I can see the option to reinstall packages. However when I press a power button to reinstall packages it seems like something is happening and it takes about 3 seconds and then the phone reboots.
I tried to use titanium Backup and I get a message it can't get access to root. I am assuming that am still not rooted.
I tried rooting with this method two times and it seems the result is the same.
Anyone has any idea?
thanks
Okay who is going to be the first one to flame him?
Have you tried using Ryan Za's OCLF app in the market?

I just did and followed the instructions. However when I entered the recovery mode I did not see the package that I have to install.

Ignore some of the idiots above me
But that is normally how long it takes.. It doesn't take long at all for it to work. Just go to apps on your phone, and look for an application called "SuperUser"
If it is there then you are rooted, and for apps that require root, there will be a little box that pops up asking for permission

Why are you going to flame him? None of the stickys have been updated with any information regarding root information for JI6.
Some people have issues, while other people do not.
I visit this forum everyday and still haven't found any definitive information about rooting on JI6...just people saying "hey try this" or "try that".
Goofing around without knowing what you're doing is the easiest way to jack up your phone. If he messed it up just following a thread by 'Billy-bob-Joe' then you would probably be the first one to flame him for not asking for help before he tried anything.
Cut the guy some slack.
Master thank you for responding.

I had the superuser application even before I was trying any rooting.
I also just tried another tutorial for one click root and another tutorial where a rooting is done from a apk file from within the phone but nothing seems to work.
Some people have the same problem at the one click root thread but there is no answer to that.
Thanks Tarzanman
I am assuming JI6 is a firmware that I have.
As of this post JI6 is the latest firmware for the Samsung Vibrant.
T-mobile is sending it out over their network ("OTA"), but you can also obtain the update via Samsung's (very buggy) Kies or Kies Mini software (assuming you get the software to recognize your phone properly).
It is called JI6 because if you go to Settings|About Phone|Baseband Version
then phones running this firmware will read "T959UVJI6"
Tarzanman thanks for your explanation.
On my phone is actually reads as: T959UVJFD.
Can this firmware be rooted?

Yes, JFD is the stock ROM. You might as well get JI6 loaded on to it, as loading it on after will reset your root priviledges anyways.

Terminal Emulator gave me a message "Permission Denied"
I am assuming that i am not rooted.
What am i doing wrong then?
you followed the steps on this guide?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=7150299&postcount=1
make sure you DL the file on that thread, and follow its steps!
1) make sure you rename the dl'd file "update.zip"
2) make sure you have the file in the internal memory of the phone, not the SD card
Try it again, and let us know!
I have never had a root problem, though I do find it strange that you had "superuser" prior to rooting.
You have a brand new phone? or did you buy it off the internet somewhere? There's no way new phones have "superuser" on it already.
If you've already tried to many methods, i'm guessing one of those ways you tried installed superuser on the phone without granting you root access (which is weird too)
From the General Sticky (and it works regardless of JFD or JI6):
HOW TO ROOT
justadude had a great post on how to root. Please read his post. I have used this method about 10 times and it always works flawlessly and it's just so incredibly easy.
Be sure you are placing the file on the root of your internal memory (sdcard/). This is possibly the easiest phone ever to root.

I did . I just tried now again and the same thing happened.
It seems like the process went fine. Now I tried to type su in terminal emulator and again it says permission denied.

The phone was bought from second hands. It was locked to T-Mobile. The guy who i bought it from unlocked it and claimed that he only used it for one week.
The phone came with superuser app. It is part of the phone and not a 3rd party application. I cannot remove it. I thought it was part of the stock apps that come with the phone.
s15274n, yep did that at least three times now with no luck.
Just to confirm. I am putting the update.zip file on the root of the drive that has internal memory of the phone, not the SD card. I am guessing if I was putting it elsewhere then the recovery menu will not see it as install packages option.
I am lost. Perhaps the dude that sold me the phone messed something up somehow and now because of that I can't root.
Thank you for helping me guys.
s15274n
Can you tell me something?
When you select install packages how long does the process take before the phone reboots?
For me it takes about three seconds.
It really does not take long at all.... several seconds sounds about right.
Are you renaming the file on your phone, or the pc?
My concern is you are renaming it update.zip.zip (because your pc is hiding the file extension).

I am renaming the file on the PC via total commander.
I am pretty sure it is not zip.zip issue.
Download the file to your phone directly from the thread I linked.
On your phone, go to the filed (sdcard/download).
Long press and rename it using Astro or Root Explorer, etc.
just start to the left of update.zip and delete the name so it's now just update.zip
long press and move this file to sdcard/
go to stock recovery and flash it.
Do all of these steps and tell me it doesn't work....

[Q] Amaze Root

Before I get flamed for not searching, I have and I was unable to post a question to the forum from which my question originated. Basically I need some help with installing the root using a Mac. I don't know how to make sure the root has taken place. I already have the bootloader unlocked and now I am trying to get the "perma root" to take. I get the root confirmation, all the way to the "GG!!" line at the end. However I don't know what/how to proceed. Any guidance would be great! Thanks guys!
If your not sure if you have root, download 'Terminal Emulator' from the market, type in SU, hit enter, and it should ask for superuser rights. If it does, hit yes. This means you have root.
If it says access denied, then you dont have root.
good luck man
Might I ask how you went about the unlocking-bootlader process on a mac? I'm stuck at this step (I know my way around everything else, but haven't used the terminal since the N1 days).
Also, check this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1310115 mac version posted.
Figured it out...bad download on my part.

So many options out there.
I used MyBackup Pro to Freeze the bloatware. No point on me uninstalling them really. I have plenty of space. A few megs won't make a big difference in my opinion.

[Q] User App --> System App, does the app gets root access?

Hey,
first of all my goal:
I'm on stock 4.2.1 with my Galaxy Nexus. I want to be able to toggle airplanemode either via notification center or nfc, or any other app like Tasker.
My question is:
Currently my phone is rooted and I installed different Apps like NFC Tasker, Tasker etc. I made some of this app to a system App --> moving to /system/app/ an granted them root access.
What happens to this Apps if I unroot / unlock my phone again.
Do they keep their root access, because they are at the Systemapp folder?
If not what options do I have? I don't want to keep my Phone rooted. I found a APP namped helper it is used by "Security Settings" to e.g. toogle airplane. Is that an option?
Thanks a lot
I have tried to root then unroot my gingerbread device after moving some apps to system, everything seemed fine.
Good luck !
Don't forget to press the THANKS button

[Q] AOSP without root

Does anyone know if it is possible to have AOSP on the S3 but without root at all - i.e. so I can run all apps, even those that block usage owing to root? I know on sammy roms you can temporarily unroot, but some apps still manage to find root access.
Thanks
Tom
You mean root install rom then remove root .??
Root is /system/bin/su so yes, it can be removed
Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk 4
Kinda. As in flash an AOSP ROM that doesn't have root by default? From experience, AOSP ROMS tend to handle root differently?

As in root is baked directly into settings. I'm not sure what the result would be of removing it. Likewise if I remove it from the rom before installation

No, thats SuperUser. Root itself is /system/bin/su and can be removed like any other binary in a directory can be (using an explorer with root permissions).
Super User in settings simply acts as a gatekeeper for the root binary (as the apk would if you had that) so it doesn't matter that it remains. Its only there to allow / deny applications root access and remember which you allow or deny. It doesn't actually "give" root.
Okay that makes sense. So if I remove that folder, root access will no longer function and likewise, no apps will be able to detect a rooted state? And the ROM itself won't consequentially malfunction?
The thing is I tried that before but the apps seemed nonetheless able to detect root previously etc. There's a thread that details this in the sense where it only works for about half of users?

I'm not sure. There's no reason really how it can detect root but all I can suggest is trying it. /system/bin/ is a folder. Do not delete that. delete the su binary inside.
Okay I'll post results I'm a bit

[Q] Help Rooting (ZTE Savvy)

I am new here and not really sure if I am asking in the right area (so please don't yell at me!) I have a ZTE Savvy and I wanted to root it. I have looked everywhere online and can not find anything on it. I installed the Framaroot app but had no success.
I was wondering if anyone could try and find out how to root it this type of phone? or if anyone has had any luck? if you could get back to me and let me know that would be great! Thanks.

The provided instructions only provide a "TEMP" root. but hey, we are one step closer now.
When you reboot your ZTE Savvy you will lose root.
At least I can get rid of some bloatware.
Savvy temp root is a joke. Its a start but in to way did it help me. I can't get any of the bloat removed I maybe doing something wrong.
I lose root before reboot. Lasts about five minutes maybe longer. If I can't have full root to get fancy ROMs that is cool but would so live to remove some of the trash they install on here. Any help would be awesome.
A list of some of the apps that I can remove and how to do so would be super. I've tried es file to remove from system app folder won't allow me. Also tried titanium backup.
Titanium says it deleted but it is all still in app drawer just force closes the app I tried to deleted if I try to open it.
Then i lose root before I reboot. Once I reboot all the apps that I deleted come right back fully working. I'm stumped and hate the junk they put on here my phone says system memory is full and I have downloaded like 5 apps the rest is there trash.

There are not even any roms available. not even clockwork mod recovery to install the roms. if you install an incompatible rom its likely it will brick your Savvy. Though I would like to remove the old zte launcher for the digital cookies stock jellybean launcher. it is much faster and makes the whole system faster considering this is a low end spec'd phone.
btw i replied to your message.
