I rooted my phone and had Revolutionary recovery. I installed Rom Manager and installed the recovery, and now I cant get to my recovery screen no matter what I have tried. I really need help because now I cant do a factory data reset, flash new ROMs, anything. I have tried through bootloader, everything and I cant get to that screen. Has anyone had this problem or can anyone help me?

Don't use rom manager to flash recovery. Also, just my opinion, but TWRP recovery is better than clockwork. So, find the TWRP thread, grab the PG86IMG.zip and flash in hboot. Should solve all your issues.
Rebooted quite a few times, still cant get to recovery mode. I guess this is where being a noob kind of sucks, but how do I flash when I cant get into recovery, or how do I flash in hboot?
You don't have fastboot checked under power settings, do you? If so, uncheck it.

There are essentially three methods to flashing a custom recovery on the EVO 3D with S-OFF (revolutionary method you mentioned using above).
1) Flash from normal android mode: My application works well for this, Flash Image GUI, as well as flashing kernels, especially when being away from or not having a computer available.
2) Flash through the bootloader by putting a PG86IMG.zip file on the root of your sdcard. This file with the recovery.img loaded inside is available at the TWRP site.
3) Flash through fastboot by using the following command: fastboot flash recovery c:\downloads\twrp-recovery.img
All three of these methods will load the custom recovery image into the recovery partition on a revolutionary s-off EVO 3D.

Every time I try to flash the PG86IMG.zip in my bootloader I keep getting a error that says "Main Version is older! Update fail!" I just dont get what I am doing wrong there.

Odd. I would only expect to see this error if you're loading a PG86IMG.zip file which contains ADDITIONAL files, other than just the recovery.img.
This error is usually only present for people who used the HTC unlock method. Those who used the revolutionary unlocked method should not see this error message.
Perhaps when you stated you loaded the revolutionary recovery, you meant the revolutionary version of cwm recovery and unlocked your device using HTC's unlock method?

I used your app and then flashed a twrp recovery, so happy that its back to normal, it has happened to me once before, and I fixed it on my own, but nothing was working this time.

I had my wife's EVO 3D working fine on VipeRom2.1 I think and when i tried to update it to 2.5 it went into a reboot loop. I cleared everything by formatting the system and clearing the cache and data and nothing. I tried a different rom, MeanRom and same thing. Right before it seems like it is going to get me to the unlock screen, reboot. I can get into the bootloader and the recovery just fine but no matter what i install, reboot, reboot, reboot.

Did you change/update your radios at all?
I am not sure of the software version. I tried going back to unrooted stock with RUU_Shooter_U_HTC_ARA_1.24.415.2_Radio_10.55.9020.00_10.13.9020.29_M_release_208706_signed and it gave me a version error.
I am running radio 0.97.10.0808 according to the relocked screen that I am getting while trying to restore to unlocked sprint stock.
And now I see the difference in radio and the version in the restore file.
Thanks for the assistance, my Epic Touch 4g has been so simple to tinker with, this thing is a pain in the rear.
The RUU you installed was for the GSM version of the phone, re-run the CDMA version. The GSM version is called Shooter_U whereas the sprint version is just called Shooter.

Does this sound about right?

I didn't look at the link you posted. But with hboot 1.5 you can not write to the boot partition from recovery. In order to do this you need to extract the boot img from the ROM your gonna flash and fastboot flash boot boot.img then fastboot boot recovery.img will take you to recovery and flash ROM from there

You actually dont need to do both. If you just do a fastboot boot recovery.img it will give you complete access, including flashing the kernal. So after you type that command, it will load a the custom recovery and when you flash the rom, it will flash the kernel included with the rom as well. FYI you need to do a fastboot boot recovery.img each time you want to flash a kernel. If you arent changing kernals then you can just go into recovery as you normally would and flash a rom. If you want to flash a kernal without hooking up to a computer, then read into Flash Image GUI.

This is what I thought, The first one I tried was the newest version of ViperRom. I first tried to just flash over top of the existing rom with the hope I would not have to reset everything and make her start over with how she had it setup, I guess the newest version had a newer kernel. Hopefully I am able to get it back to a functional state this afternoon.

I believe that does have the anthrax kernel havent downloadedthe new version. However i know some people have been having problems with roms that are based off the new OTA if their phones still have the old firmware. Definatly flash teh kernel/boot via fastboot recovery that should take care of the problem.

I got everything back working yesterday, I guess doing it correct the first time will save me some headache. I just need to remeber to start recovery from windows instead of from the bootloader screen. Thanks for the assistance.
I had followed this video ht tp://w ww.youtub e.com /watch?v=hQtUxEL8pd8 and did everything correctly. When I go to boot my phone up it shows the blue android boot animation then the green HTC animation then restarts.

Is there a way I can just undo everything and go back to the stock rom?
Edit: Tried ViperROM and it's doing the exact same thing.
Make sure you are wiping everything except sdcard and then flash the rom. Maybe even try changing recoveries to 4ext.

I assume you are s-off correct? I suggest going with Scotty's idea and switching to 4ext recovery. Cwm has been know to cause issues with the evo 3d. I'm also assuming that you mean hboot 1.58 not 1.57. FYI you can use any hboot with those ROMs. Just can't use the stock 2.89 kernel with any other hboot but 1.58. You also havnt specified whether or not your using the stock kernels that come with the ROM.
The meanrom by default flashes the VM kernel so if your on hboot 1.58. You have to flash the stock 2.89 kernel in the meanrom folder that's generated after you flash meanrom.
As for viperom you shouldnt have any problem flashing it considering that its compatible with any hboot. Which brings me back to my main point. Flash 4ext recovery and make sure you do a full wipe. That includes data factory wipe, cache and dalvik wipe and wipe all partitions except sdcard.
There's no reason give up when you run into a snag. There's usually a solution to every problem and you did the right thing by posting your question here. There's a ton of possibilities on here to do with your phone. Just read, research, ask questions if you are unsure of something.

I'm S-on, will it matter? And also I do mean 1.57. And one more thing. Does it matter if I boot up into a recovery using the command prompt? Also I'm not sure what kernel it is. I guess the one that's in the zip folder? Also sorry for slow responses I've been working days. Any chance you'll be on tomorrow around 7pm central?
Update: I reformatted everything and tried reinstalling Viperrom through CWM but no dice still boots up and resets. Got 4ext installed. Working from there.
Update: 4EXT is the best recovery I've ever seen and I'm never using CWM again.
Update: I installed VIperROM through 4ext and it's still restarting itself.
Do you have smart flash enabled in 4ext recovery? Its under tools settings.

No I do not. Just got off work and I'm doing it now. I don't need to have root for a custom rom do I? Also i youtubed bootloop to see if it is really what's wrong and I came up with this video. ht tp ://www .y outube.co m/watch?v=OKXTD1-fqbc and my phones doing more than that. It's booting up all the way then once the screen and dock begins to load it restarts.

OK go ahead and turn it on. This will enable you to flash kernels inside recovery having s-on. No you don't have to root to flash a custom ROM. However every ROM has superuser baked into them so flashing one will automatically give you root.
I just want to add that s-on users do not have access to the boot partition which is where your kernel sits. Thats the cause of your bootlooping, before your recovery wasn't flashing any kernel with the ROM. Now with 4ext and smart flash its possible.

How do I flash a kernel? I'm not really sure what one is, I just know it's really important.
Think of a kernel as a airplane tower that guides the direction of how the android system operates. It controls touch screen, it contains the drivers that make your keyboard work, WiFi, 4g, camera etc.. it is also responsible for taking over android run time after hboot finishes initiating everything to get android up and running. Someone correct me if my information is incorrect please lol. For now, stick with 4ext recovery and enable smart flash under tools settings. Everything should be good after that. I would highly recommend gaining s-off to make everything easier.
If your interested just ask and I'm sure one of us will be glad to help you.

I formatted everything using 4ext and installed a rom i also flashed the boot img just incase and it still restarted.
Here's the steps I took.
1. Format everything.
2. Download the.zip file and copy to SD card.
3. Load the recovery and enable smartflash.
4. Installed the rom.
5. Flashed the boot.img
6. Also tried without flashing the boot img.
And just to clarify. I'm installing ViperROM. And I only need the .zip file, correct?
I ended up using RUU to fix it and go back to the stock rom/ect, Then locked the bootloader unlocked it and flashed superuser and rooted it then got s-off using the wire trick. But after I rebooted it keeps taking me back to the jbear bootup logo and when I try to flash a recovery it doesn't load I just get the htc logo then jbear logo then it restarts. I followed this guide.htt p://w ww.yo utube.co m/ watch?v =tRj47iFQvbE I found here on the xda forums.
Do you have the ics ruu correct? Boot back into bootloader and reflash the ruu. Do not unlock your bootloader again. Its not necessary anymore now that you have s-off.

Booted up perfectly . So now I'm ready to flash any cdma rom with no problems? Do you know if there's a cdma rom that comes with, beats, adobe flash, and extras?
When I tried to flash a recovery this happened.

Your s-off. If you have root you can flash your recovery from 4ext updater or use flash GUI image from Google play. If no root, you will need to take your recovery and Rename it to PG86IMG, place it on root of sdcard and boot into bootloader. Let the phone pick up the recovery update and flash it. Power up your phone and take the file off the root of your card. Then power back down into bootloader and click on recovery. Let me know if it works.

Edit: just realized your using virgin mobile correct? I believe the reason your phone kept bootlooping with viper ROM was because of hboot. Try flashing a different hboot with the same method as the ruu and recovery.

I downloaded root checker and apparently I'm not root anymore. Yes I'm VM. I'm trying to rename the recovery and update it using the SD card now.
I tried changing the name and it won't detect it. Do I rename the img file or use a zip file? For the RUU I used the pc program to update it and the recovery I use fastboot in the cmd prompt. How do I flash a different hboot? Would I be able to use fastboot for the recovery if i reunlocked the boot loader?

OK, get latest twrp recovery zip and do the same thing you tried with 4ext. I know, its a pain in the ass. I had to go through the same thing when I got my phone s-off with wire trick. The reason why I'm having you do this this way is because in case you ever need to have your phone serviced. They will check to see if you unlocked your bootloader or relocked it. Your bootloader is in "locked" state thus, they cannot deny you service regardless of s-on or s-off.

I just ended up unlocking the boot loader again and installing the recovery that way. Then saw this.. oh well lol. I really do appreciate the help. . I'm going to try to install viperrom again, and double backup this time! I'll let you know how it goes.

I am new here and this is my first post so forgive me if starting a new thread for this topic was wrong but I found my own situation slightly different from the others here who had the same problem.
I have a gsm unlocked rezound and was trying to get rid of the unknown sim error message at lock screen. I followed the steps mentioned on this thread --> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1882355. I rooted the phone, downloaded the apk. Deleted the .odex file and replaced the existing apk with the downloaded one and rebooted. Now, I am stuck at the lock screen with no icons. But for the other people who faced similiar issue, they were able to open the home screen. I can't. I can see pop ups for sms/mail. I get ring when a call comes in but I cant pick. I tried hard reset. Tried booting without sim/sd card. Still no luck. I tried connecting the phone to my pc but now my pc wont recognise the phone when its connected. I can see icon on top of the phone which says USB connected and I also see sync icon, but it will not go any further. I dont know how to get into the phone's menu now.
I may have bitten more than I can chew, silly me :crying:
If you guys can help me in any way, I would appreciate that a lot.

Flash my debloater, choosing the Sense option(will be brought to a widget removal screen if you don' use them all) & AOSP lockscreen. Disadvantage to that though, you will have to unlock to see the caller id when it rings.

Thank you for the quick response. I have downloaded the file. I know this sounds stupid but I am a real rookie. I don't know how to do the flashing or how to get to the AOSP lock screen. If you could guide me through the process or maybe give me a link where I can learn it myself, it would be great.
Essentially since you already have rooted, you will(should) also have a custom recovery (TWRP, AmonRa, CWM). Install it as you would a regular rom but without any wipes until after flash of the zip. Dependent on which recovery you will want to look up their FAQ/QnA on how to wipe dalvik/cache.
Once you get inside the script, you will see what I meant by "Choose Sense & AOSP Lockscreen".

Yes the phone was rooted, but I used a rooting software from google apps from the phone. After I downloaded that app, it rooted the phone and brought in an extra icon. I remember it as SU root something, but I didnt do it from the pc. So I dont have any recovery on the pc. I used to sync the phone with htc sync. Unfortunately, right now, my pc wont recognise the phone. I tried root explorer for android from pc, it wont recognise the device. HTC sync too will not. But my phone seems to know when a USB is connected, it brings the usb icon on top but thats about it. ((

Thank you for the help buddy. I am glad you said its not. I dont know what I would have done if it had. This is my first android phone and I took it a week back. I was beginning to miss my iPhone . Unfortunately the link you provided wont help me because I have no way of restarting phone other than by removing battery. Even when in fastboot, the pc does not recognise the device even when device shows fastboot usb. I doubt if I can get past step 1 in that link.
I found that I am on Vigor H Boot 2.27.000 and Radio 2.22.10.0803r with S-ON. I tried to turn S-Off after reading and educating myself on android from this forum till now. But even to S-Off, I need to be able to enable USB in debug mode which I am not able to. Any suggestions ?

I took the phone to a couple of places to check if it can be fixed, No one was able to fix it thus far, Any other advice or suggestions to fix this would be great. Any admins/mods have something to add ? Please, I am desperate to fix this phone. Anyway of doing this ?
Have you tried flashing a different rom?
If he's S-on and locked, he can simply flash the latest RUU can't he(just to get the phone working again). From there someone can help him set up adb, and s-off.

From what they posted, somehow they don't have a custom recovery even though they are rooted?
Can you put a PH98IMG.zip file of a recovery (either Amon Ra or TWRP) on your SD card and flash it in hboot? Then flash a custom ROM the same way from recovery.
You can take the SD card out and mount it on your pc and use your pc to copy over the recovery PH98IMG.zip file.
And oh yeah, I see what Obaterista... was saying. You should be able to flash the latest RUU from hboot. Here's a link for it:

Yes I have vigor, tried AmonRa, that did not work mate. It starts fastboot, gets stuck @ unpacking PH98IMG.diag and then nothing happens.

The bootloader screen says S-On. On top it says ***Tampered*** and below it ***UNLOCKED***.

Yes I rooted from a tool I found on android market. Noob me. So I do not have a recovery. I had downloaded the PH98IMG.zip and put it in my sd card and tried. The recovery starts and then shows a red exclamation and then nothing happens.

What you'll have to do is relock your boot loader, flash the RUU and then unlock again. From there you should be able to flash a recovery and flash a rom.

My phone is also soft bricked. I relocked the phone and now it just sits in hboot and won't do anything no matter if I yet to flash the ruu zip file or use the exe ruu.

Believe I am 4.03.605.2 main version, at least that's what the exe file said.

Are you trying with the stock ROM ? If ure saving stock ROM as PH98IMG.zip, then try PH98IMG without the .zip typed in.

Thanks a tonne. That helped. I am back in the menu now. I am so grateful for ure help. But my problems dont seem to end just yet. Now, my htc sync wont detect the phone. The phone is relocked. I will try unlocking and see if it works, but is that the cause ?

I am no expert to give u any suggestions but maybe if you could explain how it got bricked in the first place, someone might be able to give u a better solution mate.
I've tried multiple ways of returning to stock, including PJ75IMG.zip and running the RUU for my version. TWRP won't let me flash anything I've tried and they all fail. I can install backups from TWRP no problem there. I'll try to give as many details as possible, but I can't figure out what is wrong.

Update your twrp to 2.3.3.0 or if you want to return to stock you have to relock your bootloader

TWRP won't take the update for whatever reason, and I can't get fastboot to work over this machine, so I'm thinking about running linux to get into the phone a little easier (hopefully.) I either have to wait til I can use my roommates machine, or start installing a dual boot
Have you tried goomanager to update twrp?
Yea, it downloads the file, gives a message stating it has been installed, then it does nothing. No reboot. when I manually reboot into recovery, it still sits at previous version.
Do you have adb setup on your PC? Also do you have the correct drivers installed ?

Ok, so finally got my fastboot to work
"Fastboot oem lock"
Worked. Awesome...now it's stuck in a bootloader loop. Won't let me into recovery, but I can still get to fastboot. I can't get to recovery, factory reset, etc. just hboot and fastboot.
screen shows tampered relocked and security warning.
Any ideas? I can get it to flash the PJ75IMG.zip but it says main version is older! or something to that effect and it fails. Any ideas?
UPDATE: Got it unlocked again and it booted back into OS.
Bump. I'd really like to get this phone on the newest versions of everything. Anyone have any ideas?

No, but I was wondering if I could flash things in that state. Since it wasn't moving past bootloader I wasn't sure if I should try anything. Is stock recovery effected by anything like software version?

Well since you are s-on you can't flash PJ75IMG files from bootloader if you want to update your phone to the latest OTA you have to relock your bootloader and reflash the stock recovery and take the OTA then unlock and flash twrp again.
If you click the link in my sig and download the 3.15/2.09 hboot file there is a stock recovery in the files as well as instructions on how to flash it

So I'm trying to run the Dirty Racun method, and I'm sitting at this part "sudo ./fastboot flash zip RUU.zip"
How long should this normally take? The only thing I can see is Sending 'zip' (filesize) and htc on the phone. Does this process take awhile? >20 mins? Is there some kind of progress meter?
Update:// So apparently I'm stuck. DirtyRacun seems to hang on the RUU flash. BigDaddy, it also stops half way thru the stock recovery flash.
I've been trying to root my EVO 4G LTE using various guides from this board, and I'm not having a lot of luck. I have HBOOT 2.09 and it's S-ON. It seems like the easiest way to root the device is to go S-OFF, but then it appears that the device needs to be rooted to get S-OFF. So I'm a little confused at this point. I've unlocked the bootloader and installed TWRP, but when I try to install the SuperSU root utility it gives me an error about mounting partitions and fails. My bootloader screen also displays "TAMPERED" which seems to be a problem but I'm not having a lot of luck finding a way to resolve it.
So... can anyone tell me what my next step is?

Are you using Facepalm, Moonshine, or DirtyRacun? You haven't really provided enough details to help, at this point. What's your software version? I assume you're running the stock ROM?
I was running the stock ROM, I think it was 3.16. I tried using Facepalm but again it seems like it needs root to work which I haven't been able to achieve just yet. I tried installing the ROM from this thread through TWRP but it just hangs on the HTC screen so I'm not sure what's on there now. I can still get into the bootloader and recovery though.
You can't use Facepalm on 3.16 software. Use Moonshine.

You may need to fastboot flash the boot.img to make sure it fully boots.
OK, I downloaded that ROM and extracted the boot.img. I booted the phone into the bootloader and ran "fastboot flash boot boot.img". It seems to have completed correctly, no errors at least, but now the phone just sits at the HTC screen with the red text at the bottom. Clearly I'm doing something wrong...
Did you flash the ROM too? Or did it reboot on you when you tried?

You have to flash the ROM in recovery.
Ok, so I went into recovery which is still TWRP, adb pushed that ROM to the phone then tried to install it. It gives a bunch of error messages about being unable to mount various items, says it's unable to find path for partition [name of the zip] and fails.

You do not extract the file, leave it as a zip and do not open it. Move it to your SD card while in fastboot (mount sd) and from there use twrp and select the correct zip to flash. But above all... DO NOT EXTRACT THE FILR

He's S-on. He can't flash kernels from recovery with Hboot 2.09.

I don't understand what you're doing here. Boot to recovery, mount storage, copy the ROM zip over, and then flash it.
Ok, so I mounted storage from recovery, or least I tried to, my PC said it needed to be formatted. So I did so, copied the file over and flashed it which completed successfully this time. My phone now boots properly, I'll give Moonshine a try now. Hopefully I won't need to bug you again, thanks for all the help.

Ok I got that app I use that. An for my other one I'm selling is s-off so I can just flash this on that one..it's been fun on the Evo with the helpful fellow xda's on the jewel. But the wife's work now cover half your bill if you have verizon so we had no choice

I'm having a little trouble with Moonshine. It reboots the phone a couple of times, gets to step 3 then just keeps printing periods in the program window. I've been reading through the Moonshine thread and it seems other people have had the same problem, but I haven't seen a solid fix yet. Anyone know what I need to do or should I stick with the Moonshine thread?
