[Q] i727 i777 Skyrocket - Need clarification - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

Hi all. I tried searching but I can't find a clear answer. I hate all these naming schemes carriers use. I'm just looking for clarification.
i727 = Samsung Galaxy S2 with LTE - aka: Skyrocket on AT&T
i777 = Samsung Galaxy S2 without LTE
I've seen videos and tried to find comparisons. If from what I understand these two models look the same, but under the hood they're different enough where roms and kernels aren't compatible.
Also Rogers in Canada has the i727R which I think it probably the same as the i727 Skyrocket, the R simply standing for Rogers. That's just my assumption.
Is any of this correct?

Correct
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using xda premium

Correct - I727 = Skyrocket = 95% identical to the T-Mobile T989.
I777 = Real GS2 (Crapdragon-based units should never have been given the GSII name - it dilutes the brand), 95% identical to the international GT-I9100.
Forums had better be getting cleaned up soon to get the ****rocket out of here and closer to the T989 forums so it stops confusing people, and it's clearer to the Canadians they have the same device.

So in terms of apps and themes, i727 owners should be looking at the T989 forums instead of the i777?

By comparison. Not saying that they *will* work. But *if* a phone will be compatible to the skyrocket, T989 will work before anything here does.

Heh. Thankfully there's nandroid. I just tried a theme (White Lightning) that is supposed to work for stock T989 roms and it blew up the phone. Did a restore and back in action.

Definitely better safe than sorry. As long as you got that nand backup and never touch the bootloaders, you can flash what you want, in general. But by definition flashing anything *is* a risk.
Just be ready to lose everything if something goes bad.
As long as the bootloaders aren't touched you'll still have download mode.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using XDA App

Yup, at least the Crapdragon doesn't COMPLETELY break download mode.
But you're screwed if you're a Mac or Linux user with the T989 or ****rocket. (They broke Heimdall)

[Q] Samsung Attain

Question: Does anyone know if the new Attain to be released next month will be compatible with the ROMS and Kernels from the XDA devs, that are available for SGS2 phones? Just trying to decide what to upgrade to. Was looking at the Infuse, but may hold out for the Attain.
The attain will apparently be lte based, so the modems wont work between the roms. Also it will have 4 buttons compared to 3, so the kernel will need some touching up to be compatible kinda like the i9000/captivate kernels currently are. So in the end, i doubt you'll be able to flash i9100 roms onto the attain.

Go for the international sgs2. One less middle man for getting updates and better button configuration. Their lte network is so tiny anyway. Buy an iphone 5 when it comes out and sell it for 1k on ebay, then buy this phone and make money. There's no way the attain will beat this phone. At&t will probably take out the front facing camera and the led flash for no reason; they nerfed the captivate and there's no reason to believe they won't do the same again. Brandless all the way!!! Screw meddlesome companies.

But... Your stuck with this crappy network (pretty sure data speeds will surpass what we get here as does the infuse and inspire) ... AND...worse, the the data cap (less your grandfathered).

Galaxy s2 or the Vivid

I have the galaxy s2 but still in my return period. Just wondering if I should go switch for the vivid or skyrocket? I don't live in a LTE Area but sounds like they get better speeds?
I love the support and Rome that I can get on the sgs2.

I'd stay on the s2 personally

The Vivid is currently NON-flashable
It has S-ON and unless someone finds a new exploit this phone will never get anything more then temp-root
It is also MUCH slower then the SGS2
I bought the skyrocket. Right after buying the S2. SO...KEEP THE S2! I took the skyrocket back after two days and got the S2 back. I felt is was to thick, heavy, screen lagged, and the screen wasn't as sharp as s2. So in my opinion the s2 is a much better phone.
I don't have any experience with the vivid

So? The desire HD was as well. It takes a gold card usually to root them. The vivid is a much better option than the skyrocket.

Forget both of them and get the iPhone 4s, then come back and tell us awesome iOS is! Oh god I just threw up in my mouth, I get nauseous when I get near an iPhone. iOS also makes my ED flare up really bad as well.... Stick with the SGS II and keep your upgrade. Save it for a rainy day or when the SGS III hits the market.
S2. I was in the same dilemma. I don't regret getting the S2 at all. Amazing phone.
Add to that, look at the ICS progress already over at the i9100 forums.
I have the vivid and I am probably returning it for a sgs2 today. The phone is too heavy, the screen really is too big and the battery life is terrible. And after 2 days I already miss flashing roms since I'm not too fond of sense.
Sent from my HTC PH39100 using xda premium
I'd say stay with the S2. It is a better phone than the its Qualcomm sisters in my opinion (and technically speaking, besides the lack of LTE). I do not regret my choice of the S2 at all. Currently running the MIUI 4.0 rom and getting the best battery life I have ever had with any phone.
This is the first phone that I haven't thought to myself, "crap, I should have gotten this one instead" or "I'm going to upgrade when such and such phone comes out". And I am one of those people who like to always have the latest and greatest, but I plan on keeping this phone for a long time.
S II hands down... if you want LTE then you can get the skyrocket but that doesn't seems as good on performance as the S II

yeah I think HTC has totally dropped the ball....I have not seen a single phone they have come out with has impressed me AT ALL. They have slid down in the ranks to me right under Motorola who I only loathe a little less than the iPhone. Okay I am a Samsung fanboy......but I am okay with it
Thanks to all you guys! I was looking for input and my thought was to keep my galaxy 2. Appreciate all the responses!

Go check out the skyrocket forum, they are actually trying to PAY devs to buy the phone and switch over. If you want lte and don't mind stocking with stock, then go for it I guess.

You come to an S2 forum and expect people to give you an un-biased answer? Ya right...
Try it out and see, there's nothing else you can do. See which one you like, if you get better speeds with the Vivid then get that otherwise keep the SGSII. Read up as much as you can on both devices, see which interface you prefer more, what feels better in your hand and overall performance, only you can determine that.
No one else on these boards can make up your mind for you except yourself, these threads make me scratch my head..
All I can say is try each out before you make a decision.
I bought a Vivid. Returned because of horrible problems with data. When it got data, it was fast. When it got data. That wasn't very often.
I got a Skyrocket. I'm probably returning it because of horrible problems with data. When it gets data, it's fast. When it gets data. That isn't very often.
There's some kind of problem With AT&T and LTE phones. Eventually it'll get better. I think I'm going to get a S2 for now.

[Q] Another "Which ROM" Thread: Closest to Samsung Stock without limitations?

[Q] Another "Which ROM" Thread: Closest to Samsung Stock without limitations?
Short Question: What ROM is closest to the stock AT&T ROM without the bloatware and WiFi tethering snooping/limitations?
Long Question:
I am not a total buffoon, and have been running custom ROMs since my HTC Blue Angel. This week I upgraded my Telstra T9193 running WinMO and Froyo Super RAM to a stock AT&T SII. This is the first AT&T branded phone I have had in over a decade. Them changing the data plan to have caps and losing my grandfathered in plan of unlimited as being truly unlimited has forced me to switch phones to get the 5GB cap instead of the 3GB cap and then also I have been eligible for an upgrade for 8-9 years and havent because of the data plan.
So I like the look and feel of the stock ROM. However I despise all the AT&T bloatware on there and the lack of WiFi tethering. I have already rooted the device and it is ready to accept a new ROM.
What I am looking for is something that is close to stock, but doesn't have the AT&T contacts, doesn't have any of the pre-installed AT&T apps, doesn't have the limited market (they mask market apps?! WTF!), and doesn't have the AT&T modem that routes tether traffic differently so they can identify phone data versus tether data.
My biggest complaint is tethering. I need that. I use between 4GB and 10GB a month on my phone with data, as that is my internet line 5 days a week. For now I am still using my HTC T9193 until I can get this limitation fixed. The other ones are more of wishlists, but the tethering is a hard requirement.
So any suggestions? I am still looking over the ROM list. Last time I looked for a ROM though, there were a few big players and it was easy to pick which one you jived with best. Now it seems like everyone and there mother is trying to cook a ROM. I just want something that puts the phone back to the way Samsung and Google intended and not the crooks at AT&T...

Lol. The way Google intended Android to be like and the way Samsung does are two very, very different things.
You can go with either one, but not both.

What do you mean by "from-carrier phones".
Because the original, international Galaxy S2 is the i9100. The i777 is a carrier modified version. However the i777 is the closest to the i9100 therefore it has good development (even if it's not as good as the original one when it comes to custom roms and such).

Short Answer:
The following are all ICS based:
Pure AOSP - AOKP or CyanogenMod 9
Samsung Based without bloat - Ultimatum, Phone Bricker, ShoStock, etc.
Its on YOU to figure out what YOU want. This thread is probably going to be short lived as "Which ROM" threads are looked down upon.
First: xda has a i777 forum where you might get better help.
Second: The poster above me is right.
Third: I'm in rather good mood so you get a short overview anyway.
Google's gingerbread: CyanogenMod 7
Google's Ice Cream Sandwich:
CyanogenMod 9
Samsung's GB or ICS:
Take a look at the i777 forum as I own an i9100 and don't know the i777 scene.
Maybe worth a look too:
MIUI (the gingerbread version - MIUI v4 sucks). Something entirely different, although I don't know if it's available for the i777.
Hope this helps.

If it has the AT&T kernel and AT&T modem, then does mean it has the same AT&T WiFi tether blocking that AT&T now does? This is something I will continue to research, but if someone knows, that would be even better.

Nice! See, people do read the info.
I have installed your ROM, and it works perfectly. I am having issues with my WiFi Tethering App (android-wifi-tether, found here: http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/) but the built in one works well.
I just wish it had a status to show current speed and total usage for that tethering period. As well as a way to put a shortcut on a homepage.

[Q] Just traded for a SGH-i777 but now confused

I just traded my iPhone 4 for this phone which state in "About Phone" that it's an SGH-i777 running 2.3.6. OK, fine.
Before I traded, I did some checking to see the difference between the SII & the SII Skyrocket. I was under the impression that the SII was the superior phone after seeing the various nicknames for the Skyrocket. I then found out that since I needed the AT&T version, i'd probably have to get the Skyrocket. OK, fine.
Now here's where i'm confused. I went to this site & it showed the differences between the SII & SII Skyrocket. My phone has the camera shape of the SII, but has the writing on the back cover (Galaxy SII) of the Skyrocket. The front of the phone has the touch screen buttons.
What gives?
You were looking at the International version of the SII. What you're holding in your hand is the US (At&t) version. Still superior to the Skyrockets.

Technically you don't have either of those. They are all SII's by name..but the i777 that you have is the one closest to the original international version of the SII (not the skyrocket). And to confirm, you do have an AT&T model phone.
Your phone - i777
original international S2 - I9100
S2 Skyrocket - i727
OK...thank you.
I went to the accessories thread in this forum & found the case sale @ AT&T.
The problem now is this particular case.
The front of it is showing the one large button instead of the touch screen buttons. I guess it won't work for mine?

Now I just gotta figure out if I made a good trade.

Must one go in graduated steps when rooting? I mean, do I have to go to ICS before JB?

Wrong assumption, you should spend less time looking at fanboy posts. Some kind of inferiority complex in this forum, I guess - didn't see anything similar in SkyRocket forums. Using them both side-by-side you couldn't tell a difference, but once you fire the GPS - you would definitely wish you had SkyRocket. I have both, tinker with both, they're both great phones.
In any case, your confusion is somewhat understandable, given ~11 variants of Galaxy S2. But yes, you have i777 - so enjoy the ROM abundance of the international version with several extra clicks

Your first step should be learning the difference in root and rom. They are not synonymous. You don't 'root' to another os or rom. Rooting gives you Admin rights. Nothing more, nothing less. It is not necessary for installing a rom or new firmware

I'd suggest actually using it "as is" for some time, getting yourself familiar with the system before you rush and change things. It'll also give you a better perspective on what you like and what you don't like and want changed, before you start exploring custom ROMs. It's not something that can be decided in a couple minutes of use.

In addition to what Pirate said, I would suggest spending at least 15 hours googling the terms, watching how-to videos, reading the stickies, and perusing the forum before you post any questions about how to root or flash (you flash a ROM, not root a rom) or why your phone is broken after you mistakenly flashed an i9100 ROM (there are special rules for flashing roms intended for the int'l version. Personally, id just avoid flashing them at all).
And to save you any possible embarrassment, NEVER use the word jailbreaking on these forums unless to tell someone else not to use the word, as I have just done. it's a common problem with ex-iPhone users.
Best of luck!

Just need to clarify something here... From what you've said it makes things sound like you can just flash any old i9100 ROM on an M250s. That's not the case, first it must be converted to an i9100 before its compatible. Search up on xda how to do that, there's a few good guides around.

Yes Hopper8,that's why I said it can be converted, and ROMs become compatible.

Thanks for the clarification.. So, it means both have same hardware but different firmwares.
@hooper
I have searched the forum and found many threads about converting m250s to i9100, just wondering weather both these models also have same camera, gpu, processing speed etc..
