New Galaxy S2 user Few questions. - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys and gals. Just got my S2 couple days ago and I love it, few minor issues that I would love some help on.
First of all background. This is an international S2 i9100 with firmware of
PDA: KJ1 Phone: KI4 CSC: KJ3 (TUR). (from kies)
I bought this locally here in Turkey after the frustration that my iphone4 was locked to att and my droid incredible is cdma only.
One of my biggest concerns is Android market. I do not have the Same market that i do on my HTC incredible (verizon wireless USA bought). The market that came with S2 is only for free apps and missing most of the popular free apps.
How can I get the US version of Android market.
-After googling this I found out that I needed to install market enabler on a rooted phone. Is there any other method of doing this? (flashing with UK or US based ROM?)
Even though I have owned HTC incredible for 2 years, I never customized or rooted :/ and naturally i dont have any idea whats goin on here, can anyone point me in the right direction of customizing and tweaking the s2 (would love to see what this phone can do).
Thanks in advance
-darewinder

I would start here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1134290
Read the first few posts, then look here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
Again read the first few posts, then at least the last 10.
Once you understand the process, go ahead and root your phone.
Then read some of the ROM threads and try any you like the look of. I like VillainROM myself. Stock with some useful tweaks
Hope this helps

Thanks for the great info. I really dont want to root until i am fully confertable with it
Do you know the issue with the android market i mentioned above? The fact that mine is very limited (due to my location, ROM?)

I think the only way to use a different version of market it by only rooting.(someone correct if i am wrong). i think what you need is an app called market enabler. and that should do the trick...any other way i am not familiar with sorry.
Here you go mate a link to give you a bit more info what i was talking about
http://www.redmondpie.com/market-enabler-enable-paid-apps-in-android-market-outside-us-9140493/

hmm. I am a little confused by this since the HTC incredible i have has an US market working fine. (on the same wifi network as my s2)

Advice pls - new Orange Hero, software ver, root?

Hi there, I'm a Dream and Desire owner who has rooted both handsets and I'm reasonably confident I can follow instructions
A colleague at work has just ordered the Hero on Orange (UK), and she's gone online and started reading up on it - first mistake! She's come across a few complaints concerning the Orange ROM and she's asked me "the phone guy" how easy it is to load the HTC ROM onto her phone.
I was caught on the hop, having never even seen a Hero in real life, nor followed the XDA forums for this particular handset. I have a few questions for you guys, if you don't mind - will likely save me hours of reading
1. What version of Android are Orange dishing out on their Heros atm? Donut or Eclair?
2. Depending on the answer to above, please point me in the direction of a rooting guide for the thing.
3. If I can root, what's the best developer ROM around for SPEED and STABILITY? This is a one time thing, I don't want her running back to me every other week, with problems that I can't solve there and then without flashing the thing all the time.
4. If root can't be achieved, can I use a goldcard method to load up the HTC ROM instead? Show me where/how please.
5. What are the known problems with the Orange ROMs - is it even worth me going to the trouble? Will loading up the HTC ROM make a noticeable difference for her?
Finally, she hasn't even got the thing yet, and since I've never had it I can't imagine what probs she may run into. It would be nice to educate her and get on these forums reading and doing stuff herself, but I don't think that will happen tbh. With that in mind I'm looking for suggestions to optimise the thing for permanent daily use. I don't want bleeding edge, just as much performance as I can squeeze out of it without compromising reliability.
Many thanks for your replies - don't be afraid to get technical with me!

1) Should be 1.5 (can't remember codename) as I don't think they have finished customising their own 2.1 ROM.
I doubt many carriers will do 2.1 on shipped phones, as hero is at end of life tbh and likely won't be made in large enough quantities to justify using new ROM.
2) http://www.villainrom.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=46&t=375
3) VillainROM 12 or any other final GSM WWE should be fine. Just test if a little and it should be fine. Watch out for OC settings if you want it to be noob-proof. Go for safe settings.
4) That guide explains all methods
5) No idea. IMHO carrier ROMs are all crap, just like stock ones. No root is the big one for me.
Just install a decent ROM for this last point. Anything recent that's been up for a while without many updates should be fine
Thanks anon2122, that helps me out a lot

Unfortunately not right now, as the server appears to be down
But it will be back soon. When it is, go to development forum, then in the list of announcements is one for radio rom download links.
Click that, and take the second newest one iirc. Or read the later posts for people confirming which version works on which network.

Recent Android Market Update on jailbroken Galaxy S II

Hey everyone, sorry if this was already asked, but I couldnt find anything after searching both on XDA and elsewhere on the intertubes. I'm new to this phone, and havent used Android in over a year, so I am a little rusty.
About 10 days ago, an update to the Android market took place, giving it access to books and movies. What is the best way to get this updated version of the market on my phone without loosing my jailbreak? If anyone could help, or give me some insight it would be greatly appreciated.
- JKDEM
Wait, till the updates roll out everywhere gradually. No point in jumping for a leaked version.
Besides, have you seen how many people are keen to go back to the old market? Lol.
Regards.
Sent from GT-I9100
Usually when i hear that word "jailbroken" it's people talking about iPhones, do you mean unlocked to all networks or something else?
Lol your right i meant rooted. I guess you can see what platform i came from!
You will find the market update has been posted on the forum .

Korean version shv-e160l

Hi guys, I think we should have a separate section here so that we could share our experiences with this particular model...I am very sorry if I pissed off any moderators here but since there are no threads regarding this model I felt like I had to do it
I wanna start by telling you that I bought this model for 550$ from Seoul just a week ago and I am very happy. Actually my aim was to get Samsung Galaxy S 3 but I missed it by a week But then saw this phone and said lets give it a try. And guess what , I am more than impressed Anyways after checking couple of forums I saw that official ICS Package was out I upgraded it and then rooted by the help of this forum. Definitely better performance and nice tweaks. But this came with one small issue ; sms problem. when there is an incoming SMS it says "No Caller ID" . Again after little bit googling I found the app called Handcent and it did the trick. Until an international or custom Rom comes out this could be the solution I suppose
One of the biggest differences of the Korean version is you cant go in to the secret menus by typing the secret codes in to the keypad so that caused some trouble while looking for the imei number and trying to change the SMSC ...
Lets share our experiences here so that anyone who has this version can find it here without too much hustle...

This is a bit off topic but..... this link....
http://pdadb.net/index.php?m=specs&id=3569&c=samsung_shv-e160l_galaxy_note_lte
shows it to be basically a ATT type Note....... so other than country specific software quirks........ it is just a 717 note...... I will leave open for now but I think this will not go far, since there are not a lot of Korean Note user to interact with........... If you could please root your phone and provide a sys-dump and kernel and modem extraction would be very helpful to the community....
Thanks Oka1

I already investigated , the blocks dont seem to be the same , the kernel is not the same either , probably needs to be reoriented or somethign and the usr key layout (obviously) needs to be changed . so with a modified updater script and proper kernel by flashing only system it *should work*
Why is this in the development thread? Rom/Mods/Modems only from what I am aware of.

Well oka1 posted on it and is his decision to make if the thread is closed or moved, maybe they will get the system dump so others with the Korean note can benefit from it.

Why don't you just make a bounty thread? If money is involved maybe it might convince a dev to try cooking up a rom and making a custom kernel. It is always nice to get free development but money can motivate people. Put up some money and I am sure others will too and see if you can't get it done. I have seen lots of other threads on your model and I know everyone with your device wants it badly. Its worth a try anyway.
So if I was to unlock my i717 and took it to Korea it would work with their service providers? :s

hi
hi people, i use this korean model as well.
I am new to android (in fact, started 2 months ago) and not a native english speaker. So, i'm having a lot trouble with some technical words u guys use.
The thing is, i'm thinking of rooting my phone. but there arent much forums and threads on this model. I was wondering if the rooting guides here would work on my phone? and there are so many of em (also for i717...) ...
SOOooo, if possible could you quote the rooting guide (or link to thread) which will definitely work on my phone. i cant afford to make my phone obsolete
Help is much appreciated. Thanks
(btw, i'm from Mongolia. heya, fellow earthlings... haha)
Korean devs are at androidpub and matpclub, but not really serious development is there. Few kernel devs like tegrak and mostly cosmetic/porting from International ROM.
Korean note have 32GB/64GB variety, three diffrent carrier (SKT: HSPA+2100 LTE800/1800, KT: HSPA+2100 LTE1800, LGU: CDMArev.B1800 LTE800), hardware button, DMB, carrier specific addon plugins and frameworks, and pink note
and SHV-E160L for LGU, which is CDMA only(like Verizon). Pretty sure ATT note ROMs are not portable.

Why would you even tell him? Better yet...why care? At least he started one thread for a whole model, to discuss all parts. He could be proliferating. Lets be nice here.
When there was no i717 forum, people discussed it in the Int. forum.
The i717R is discussed here...even though the forum is titled "AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717" as it should be.
Be easy on him. This is good for a chat, and it's about as close to the right place as it gets. He was honest about the fact that he knew there was no other place, and he was nice.
And his specific version has LTE and is powered by a snapdragon. So perhaps this truely is as good as it gets on XDA.

It'd be cool if you could post some pictures and do a hardware impressions review.
Thanks for understanding guys. That is the xda spirit that we seek here is the first quadrant standart benchmark that I had.

hidden menu !!!
I was searching for an answer for my sms problem and I found out an answer for something else. I was not able to enter any secret codes for the system menus before now it turns out that there is a hidden menu placed by the korean network which you can enter by typing 319 712 358 and then when it asks fr the password you type 0821 and Vala! You have access to the system settings now.
Now here is the question I can not make a video call because my LTE/3G server dns is a korean server address. Does anybody know where I could find the network server dns addresses for the Gsm Networks...
i broke my e160s menu and back button by flashing i717 kernel. i was able to flash cwm and i717 roms but orientation and those buttons are not working. flashing back original kernel and firmware didnt restore those buttons. i could get the phone back working without those buttons. but now i have to use another app to trigger those buttons.

Hi , as far as I know you can unbrick or recover your phone from any kind of situation. They have released the tool to do that. I can not post another forum's link here so just check the chinese version xda which is koxda and use google translate. You can find a lot of info there but it is hard to understand because of the translation. So actually that is the main reason I started this thread...
Im Glad man that youve open this threat for us.
i also use this device. Galaxy note shv-e160..UNRAZ how did you fix your sms problem? need it badly?? please
As I have wrote before in one of my posts in this thread I solved this with the free app called Handcent sms where you could download it from the market I can both send and recieve sms with no problem. But one handicap is I cant use any Turkish characters nor can exceed the 160 characters limit. Then you see the failed sending the message error... I am waiting for the update which would hopefully solve all the miseries One of the guys in this forum installed Honeycomb from the Koxda forum and solved the problem like that but I dont like using old firmware while there is an update

[Q] Regarding rooting on 4.0.3 T-Mobile Galaxy S II

Hey guys. I came from the Sidekick 4G and helped ROM development there. However, it was time for me to go. In lieu of this, I picked up the SGS2. Like any other user here on XDA, I want pure freedom and control of my device. However, I'm a bit confused. The picture for this category has a weird middle button, which is lacking on mine. Mine is the T-Mobile variant and I just used Kies to update to 4.0.3 official. Can someone please guide me in the right direction to root 4.0.3 ICS Official on T-Mobile? Thank-you in advance.
P.S : I tried searching, but all of the threads confused the hell out of me, and I just want a clear justified answer.
EDIT : Found a forum with the name T-Mobile Galaxy S II, thank-you for your time. Mods, please close/delete.
Just use the rooting guide by "Rachmat".Install a kernel like Siyah before/in case your going to use 4.0.4 stock.

My Galaxy Skyrocket is a SGH-T989

I have searched this forum with no luck, so I'm asking for input. I have, and love a Galaxy s2 Skyrocket that was customized and is now a T989. Over the 3 years I've owned it, it has worked flawlessly on T-Mobile 4g. I would like to upgrade the OS. I have also purchased a factory unlock for the phone over a year ago, but never used it. Below is ther content of what I am running. My question is, or should I say are, what phone do I own, and how would you upgrade its operating system? Would you factory unlock it? I don't want a new phone as this one is a perfect size. I do appreciate any help, and if I missed where this was posted on this site, I apologize.

Just find a rom you like and install. Make sure you update the radio(http://goo.im/devs/Void_Dweller/T769-UVMB1_modem.zip) - that's for JB and newer roms for use with Tmo.
