Aard Dictionary for Offline Wikipedia - Defy Themes and Apps

I use Aard Dictionary to read the Wikipedia offline. Its by far the best offline reader i tried till now as it gets all the formatting right and searching is really fast.
It also supports multiple dictionarys (i.e. wikis) at the same time and offers tools to convert an XML-Dump into their format. This allows me to update my wikis myself and i dont have to wait for a company to do it.
Best off all: Its free and open source.

Thanks for sharing the information! Great application
Sent from my GT-P1010

How do you update the dictionary? i've just downloaded the 8GB wikipedia but it says that it was last updated at 2010.

This is great app! Looks almost like the original Wikipedia, but convert from dump to aard format is very sloooow... On my PC (Intel Core2 Duo T5900 @ 2,20 GHz) 1GB wiki dump convert more than one day!

Aard is a must have for offline wiki. You can download more recent versions from your computer I believe.

HTC S740 many Question!

Hello Friends,
Yesterday i got my NEW HTC S740 smartphone! I have to say that i'm really newbie to smartphones but i love this phone!!
I found all the features of the phone and i have to say that i'm very pleased with it! My problem is that i can't - fear to connect the phone to my computer!!
When i insert the cd of HTC in my computer it asks me to download Flash player. I download flash player and then i install it on my computer but i still can't open the cd!! Also i have installed Active Sync 4.5 on my pc! What i wanna ask is, can i connect the S740 on my pc with only Active Sync 4.5 or i have to install the program of HTC (the one i can't find because i don't have flash player)?? How can i fix the problem with flash player?
thanks in advance
My Activesync has probs with Vista
Not sure if this helps but from memory my activesync didnt work with vista and I needed some other syncing software for vista. I found it pretty easy so do a google search on syncing problems here.
I now sync my TYTN2 to my iMac and it works great as the iTunes all come across with no probs.
Enjoy
My friend i have XP! What about the problem with flash player? Why i can't read the cd?
In fact, if you've installed ActiveSync, you don't need anything else from the CD (maybe except User's Guide from the second disk). It contains (packed in Flash animations) just sync programs and few links. Anyway, if so curious, try to explore the CD and run start.exe directly from there...
Working ActiveSync should sit (greyed) now in the System Tray on the right side of the XP's bottom Taskbar. Right click over the icon and choose Connection Settigs... On following dialog first check the box Allow USB Connection.
When you'll connect your Rose to the machine now, it will start working without hassles. If any problems, first check the manual and if lost anyway, let us know again.
Ok i will try to connect with Active Sync!
WOW it worked!! thank you my friend!! Does the cd contain anything else useful?
Not really... Just links to WM 6.1 Home on Microsoft... Have a look there on TotalAccess, they're some freebies avalable.
On little trick for other places - open the connection dialog (as above) again and have a look, if the last box (Allow wireles...) is UNchecked. If so, hanged on USB your Rose will connect to internet trougth PC - it's faster and 100% "free".
And have a look on your built-in mobile favourites on Rose - you'll find a HTC page with few links. One little warning - you'll find there a link to Adobe FlashLiite, which does not work on Rose... Good tip is to check Google Maps application and maybe SkyFire (alternate browser with YouTube support).
As Pocket Internet Explorer tends to ignore WiFi connection, alternate browser is good to have anyway. Another, very solid option is Opera Mini. Just be aware - it's Java application. After installation you'll find it in Java console (it's in Accessories folder).
Enjoy!
thank you me friend for giving me these useful tips! It's really helpfull and will help me understand better my smartphone!!
P.S. How can i see youtube and generally streaming videos on my S740? I visited youtube but i couldn't watch videos!!
Until Adobe will understand, that WM 6.1 Standard has no limitations in that (the FlashLite just denies to install), as far as I know, the only way I see is the SkyFire browser as mentioned above. Just read Privacy statement on their site first, you'd probably not like info they're collecting...
Oh ok! And something last...
I want to buy an extra card because i need more space! What kind of card does it take?? Micro sd or Mini sd?? Confusing!
Micro. Don't be confused, on commercial photos they look the same, because usually sold with adapter in Mini size (micro is then just delivered inserted in the adapter).
Crossfingers with inserting card into the slot as this is only thing which drove me insane on early beginning...
Therefore I would recommend you the largest possible card to avoid a need to change it. As Rose supports the latest standards of SD Cards, you can use any size up to 32GB. Speed of the card isn't really critical - major snail in file operations is Windows Mobile file system. But this is area of little wizardry, because it depends on size, brand etc. With hight probability the most critical operation from this POV is video capturing by built-in camera.
So my recommendation is - don't spend money for useless speed, prefere size (otherwise you'll after few changes of cards in the slot throw Rose against the wall ;-) ). And if possible, just for sure, try to record some video on the card in highest size first directly in the shop and you'll see...
So, what i need is a Micro Sd card 32GB? Right?
Yeap. First word of my previous post...
Obviously, smaller sizes works as well and some (1-2 gigs) are today sold for nothing...
Maybe it's time to open 2nd CD with the manual (promise - no flash, just PDF file). I understand first confusions if somebody meets first Windows Mobile phone and enthusiasm (especially in combination WM + Rose ;-) ) should be supported.
Nevertheless in this stage manual would be faster than me (leaving for single malt "dinner" with friends ).
Ok my friend. Thank you for all your help! I will open the manual!!

Ebook

I was wondering is there any kind of app that will let me read any book on my phone please help
I really haven't been satisfied with any of the windows mobile readers I have tried, but someone has to be able to make a nice reader for multiple formats that has reflow and page-turning with gestures.
The only one I can stand to use is Adobe Reader which has reflow (has to be enabled in registry for recent versions) but only supports PDF files and has no gesture based page turning. You can scroll with your finger but not 'flip' from page to page which would be far more useful. Other readers are even less elegant, although they tend to support more ebook formats. Adobe Reader LE is installed with most (all?) stock Touch Pros and most custom ROMs.
Basically, I cannot answer your question -- I'll join you in asking it though...Where oh where is a good ebook reader for Windows Mobile?
all of the good ones I've used are pay ones.
You can of course use Microsoft Reader for pocket pc. There is a free word add-in that will covert your .doc files to .lit files. Copy them over and away you go. That was the best format available for quite a while. Recently I have discovers mobireader. It reads txt files and .mobi files and is much easier on the memory than MS Reader. I then also found an application that can convert .pdf files, .txt files and most other common formats to the .mobi format for easier reading. It is called calibre and is awesome! Hope that answers your questions.
I recommend MobiPocket Reader, as well. The program is free and versatile. I've had no difficulty finding books in that format - it seems that this is the software used by Amazon.com prior to the Kindle. It does everything I wanted it to... I'm currently reading a Dean Koontz title and it's better than a paperback. Easier to hold and when my eyes get tired, I can make the print bigger.
best one out there? ubook by far. awhole 15$ and u get everything but .lit and .pdf. they have a free nag version, and i think they have a free one. i have used it since i had an ipaq. great app, full customization available. get it. u wont regret it......oh. and u can read the files when they are .zip to save about 50-70% of the file space.
I use mobibook as well,
reflow, resize, page flipping by gesture or dpad.
I d/l ebooks in any format, open them with my laptop version, select send to mobile device and it auto-converts.
oh, and as mentioned it's free
ubook
i've been using ubook for at least 5 years now.. in fact now that i think about it, i'm still using whichever version i downloaded 5 years ago! it is usually the first thing i put on my pda when i hard reset.
i'll 2nd what the other guy said about it - it reads .txt, .doc, .html even inside zip files. has a few skins.. the interface isn't exactly standard but it's not complicated either.
eReader
I've been using the WM version of the eReader (www.ereader.com) software for several years and lie it a lot. You used to have to pay for the "pro" version, but now it's the only version and is free. Very customizable (theme, font size, margins, etc.) and works great on my TP.

[UTIL][SYNC TOOL]MobSync Vers 2.0.3[SHARWARE]

I was searching around for a sync tool that would simply allow me to synchronise my camera and video files from my HTC Leo. I found this shareware application which does this and much more.
Synchronise any folder from or to your PC and WM device using your Activesync Connection.
Despite being Japanese in origin, the interface is in simple english and extremely easy to use.
Many of you may already be aware of this, but I thought it merited a dedicated thread.
The authors website and download links can be found here..MobiSync Website.
Registration after a 30 day trial costs $8, so great value.
Thread moved to Dev&Hacking - Apps&Games.
it's not freeware it is shareware
MobSync is a software allowing any file folder synchronization from the PocketPC onto the desktop--synchronization which cannot be done with ActiveSync(or Vista).
Supported ActiveSync4.5. or Vista
Trial time is 30 days. There is no function limitation.
Another solution is goodsync http://www.goodsync.com/ which can sync mot just mibole device but also sync sftp, ftp webdrive etc...... Not a freeware
Correction
I apologise, first post corrected.
Registration
I have now registered MobSync and the license cost $8, so it is great value.
I have been using this for a while and it is a great sync app. If you want a freeware version then you can try v0.94. However I found this didn't have the great functionality that I needed so bought v2.0.3. For a few £'s you can't go wrong - I know my documents are always up to date on my TP2, and if I change them, will update back on my PC.

Can you tell us exactly what functionality is lacking in the freeware version 0.94? You write "it didn't have the great functionality of v 2.0.3" (which is shareware).
I (and probably other readers) would liek to know--exactly what is that "great functionality" that is in 2.03, but lacking in 0.94?
Both will sync your files, correct?
I know with the pay version you can specify multiple folders and also filters for which files you want to sync. Also you can specify how to sync (copy new files, exact copy, keep same as...) this is all the functionality I use, and I know at least some of that was missing on the free version. It's been a long time since I used the free version, and it would be better you install it and see if it does everything you want. If not, give the shareware version a go, I think you can trial it.

[Q] QuickOffice on the Streak

I am in desperate need of a good efficient Microsoft compatible office program on my Streak. QuickOffice came preinstalled, but I cannot seem to upgrade to the full version (so it only reads pdfs). Also when I press the buy now button on their website, it pulls up marketplace and says it was not found. I have a support ticket open on their site, but so far no useful responses.
Is anyone else having this problem? Or can anyone recommend a program for reading word and excel (and maybe powerpoint)?
Another bizarre thing is that a developer (who I sent a message to saying the Streak does not display their app right) came back saying "due
to it's irregular screen size the graphics for the game don't quite fit". 800x480 is not irregular. Maybe the screen does have a higher resolution which is being scaled down like fards mentioned.
Company in Question: http://www.quickoffice.com/
.
Have you looked at documents to go?
Also I think the screen size is down to the dpi, they are using 160 dpi on the streak, don't think that's too common.
Well i had a good look around the tinternet for you and have to say there is not much out there office wise for the android
Like fards said documents to go is one but it says will not support office 2010 so from what i can see the one we have Quick office seems to be the best
Now i went to the marketplace found the quick office clicked buy now and it took me to the google checkout did you get that far ?
I reckon Quick Office, without copy & paste, is pretty redundant, that's a big & basic hole for a document editor, if it was the only option then I guess it'd still buy it and pray for an update!
Hi Fards, I'm about to purchase documents to go, I didn't know it existed for Android. I need it for creating and editing word and excel documents and then emailing them, do you use it, and are you happy with it for those basic tasks?
Regards,
Matt
Thanks for the feedback. It just seems like QuickOffice is the best solution currently out.
For the time being I may go with Documents To Go, thanks for the suggestion fards
@lufc
I cannot find it in the marketplace. Likewise, when I use my barcode reader from their website it says the app cannot be found. The same happens when I press the buy now button on the web page from my Android phone.
My Dell Streak is running Android 1.6 build 3562
Still no response from QuickOffice support.

I have a need for spreadsheet on the Streak and I compared the lite trial versions of both Documents To Go and QuickOffice. I decided that Documents To Go was much better.
Now that I have it I am blown away by its pdf capabilities whereby it word wraps the text so goodbye to terminable side to side scrolling. Amazing.
Having registered my intention to try it out, DataViz offered me the suite for $9.99 which is cheap enough so that I don’t need to compromise my ethics over it. You could say at that price it is a steal anyway - pun intended.
I use the paid for version of Docs to go and it really is good. I have used the word to go to amend work docs on the move and this week discovered the powerpoint viewer was very useful in outline mode as I could access all the notes straight from that view, which was helpful in my meeting as it also means less scrolling
Tbh I haven't used docs to go since my palm days many many years ago, but I was looking at it just before you posted The question.
I can't stand pirated software, especially when he developers work so hard and charge so little for their android stuff.

I use it on my Nexus One often. I don't create, but edit. I am very happy with Documents To Go.
Pm me if you want officesuit. I know where to download it xxx.

Although I am a software conterfitting whore for Windows, I do indeed support Android and their developers apps. Plus at such a minimal cost, it is entirely worth it.
Bad news though, I downloaded the Documents to Go shown in my markerplace and when I opened it to press 'buy key' it brings me to the search result for Documents to Go, but does not show the full version
Looks like a may be installing an illegal version after all... Or maybe after I root my phone to a newer build it will be resolved.

I bought it direct from the website using my full win7 computer. This was in response to an email from DataViz as follows:-
"Thank you for registering our Documents To Go 2.0 "Viewer" for your Android-based device. The free Viewer version allows you to view Microsoft Word and Excel files and attachments on your device.
We are excited to offer you a special price, direct from DataViz only, on our Documents To Go Full version upgrade. "
That mail contained a link and I followed my nose from there.
Maybe best to wait for DataViz to respond to your registration after you download and install the Viewer only version?
QuickOffice updated my support ticket saying they updated the installer and to look again.
Now fully functional, purchased the app with no problems
I got an offer email through today as well do bought it, much prefer the pdf reader to the adobe one. worth the 9.99 usd for that, the amount of emails I get with pdfs in..
I used quick office and docs to go on the iphone, docs to go was better. However all the features are not on the android version and I have found the quick office version better and functionality rich (although far from perfect). The main features that made it better was the google docs integration

I use the purchased ver. of Doc.'s to go on my EVO and just purchased it again for my Streak. I use the PDF viewer a lot. One of the things you can do with the pdf viewer is go to a restaurant's web site, download their nutrition info.. Then next time you wonder how may fat calories the super sized Whopper has, you will have it at your finger tips. You can also make color coded pdf/excell doc's on a pc then email them to your streak. Open them with doc's to go and you are all set.
I discovered today that you can't open encrypted files in QuickOffice, but Docs to go (the full version at least) had no problem with it!
When I say 'encrypted' I use it in the sense that MS office uses it - you put a password on a file and save it.

Ah very interesting information to know, thanks. Never tried it.
Quick office will not install
Hey guys. Like it says, I can't get it to install.
I'm running StreakDroid 1.9 and Steve has HD installed as a system app so I upgraded to the full version so I could create documents and it wouldn't install.
So I deleted it from /system/apps/ and bought QuickOffice Pro and couldn't get it to install either....
any ideas?
I've wiped the cache and dalvik cache just in case and that didn't help either

[Q] Reader that marks visited links

Hi,
there is one use-case I still use my old Palm TX for as I cannot find any app for Android - can you help me?
Here is what I need:
I have a little perl-script that downloads a magazine every week. What I get is a table of contents (in html) and from there links to the individual articles (also html).
I now want to convert this into an ebook (I don't care about the format as long as I can create it myself) and I am looking for a reader that marks the visited links (i.e. the read articles) in the table of contents.
I currently convert it to plucker and the plucker-reader for Palm does exactly that.
Unfortunately there does still not seem to be any plucker-reader available for android (though some readers claim that they handle plucker I have not yet found one that actually works) and I cannot find any other reader for whatever format that marks visisted links.
Has anyone a suggestion?
Many thanks!
Got no reply 2 years ago and I am still searching...
Maybe someone with a suggestion this time?
