[Q] Is anyone getting charged extra on ATNT? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I believe alot of ATNT users are sticking to their $10 a month unlimited data plan. I have recently been charged $25 for the 2gb data plan on top of the $10 after switching to the UK version of i9100 Samsung galaxy S2. Is that supposed to happen? From what I read, there is an argument that they do not have a record of the IMEI if it is not an ATNT model so they have no way to track whether the phone is a smartphone or not. One reason why I bought an unlocked phone in the first place is to take advantage of the $10 a month and not pay the absurd $25. Is anyone having the same issue?

Which version of the galaxy do you have? The white or black one, there is actually a difference. Also did you remove your previous data plan before adding the ten dollar one?

My plan has been the 10 dollars one all along. I changed from a nokia e75 (also unlocked and not from atnt) to a white galaxy s2. Right now, from the website, my phone is registered as a blackberry curve What is going on ATNT...

[Q] Buy in US or INDIA? IS ulocked = rooted?

Hi, I am a complete noob.
I am in india, but will stay in US for 4 years starting august 1. So, where is is better to buy this phone? In US or INDIA?
Also, if I buy a unlocked phone in India or US, do I have to root it? In other words, is a unlocked phone a rooted phone? Or is unlocking and rooting different things?
unlocking and rooting are 2 different things.
Unlocked = You can put any sim card in and it should work (almost) anywhere in the world
Rooted = You have administrator level access to all of the files on the phone, so you can edit, delete or add as you please
Almost guaranteed, the phone will not be rooted when you buy it, especially if you are buying it new. If you are buying along with a specific carrier's plan, chances are it won't be unlocked, but if you are paying full price (~$700 USD) it will almost surely be unlocked.
I'd advise buying the international version (there is no US version yet), because it will be unlocked and therefore work in the US with a US sim card.
international?
What is the international version?
If I buy a unlocked version, then after reachig US, I must buy a FREE phone from ATT and use that sim card in the galaxy s2 ... right? Will it work?
Also, i cannot use T-Mobile since they use 1700 frequency for 3g, and galaxy does not support it

The international version is the version sold outside of the US, mainly Europe and Asia. It has a exynos processor. The Indian version has a tegra 2 processor (which is a little slower). You should get the exynos version. But that's up to you.
Yes, it will only work on ATT. See here about plans...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1166543
Prepaid will be $50 (no tax), but might get bad throttled speeds. Not sure on this though.
If you go the contract, regular post-paid way. It will be $40 for 450 minutes + $15 for data + $10 for 1000 text messages + tax = $65 + tax, with tax it will be about $75. This is if you are using an international version. If you buy an ATT version you will have to pay more for data.
Thanks,
How do i get exynos in INDIA? I want to buy from amazon, but they dont ship to india . Where can i get it?
Or, can I go to US, buy it from amazon, and buy a prepaid $50 plan with some cheap phone, and use that sim in galaxy s2?
Which option do u recommend?

Are you sure ? How come no one has seen a tegra 2 SII till now ? There's no tegra 2 SII. Devices with tegra 2 processor are not called SII. Maybe you are talking about this device, which is galaxy Z.

ImDonly1, You are an idiot. Please check your facts before you post something as stupid as what you did here. All galaxy s2 phones run on exynos processors.

well but in usa , you will get almost cell for free with better plan.
Good luck
hey friend, your options are just few and quite easy if you are set on buying galaxy s2 only.. see you could get in india for Rs.31000 which will be an unlocked s2 that u can later bring with you to US where u can buy a used or brand new prepaid no.. otherwise you could order from amazon using this link:
amazon.com/Samsung-i9100-Unlocked-Smartphone-Touchscreen/dp/B004QTBQ2C/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1310555675&sr=8-1
jst fill in the url, i cant post links yet
Its the Euro version/unlocked which should not be any problem also for u also and costs the same price... The only drawback i can think of is that wen you order from amazon you will not get a samsung warranty or be able to see the set before giving away you hard earned bucks unlike if you purchase from authorized dealer anywhere in india with warranty.
The third and last option you have is you could use your current phone for next month or so and wait till s2 is officially launched in US so you could get a nice 2 year plan which would be your last but relatively more efficient option since you mentioned you are surely going to stay for 2+ years..
The choice is yours and yours alone! but watever you decide, you sure will forget everything once u have the S2 all to yourself.. Sometimes its pays of to be patient! all the best buddy
I wont buy from amazon, because no warrenty. So, i have 2 options left...buy in india, or buy directly from ATT, after they launch.
Calculations ...
Option 1 (buying unlocked phone)
Cost of unlocked phone - $700
Cost of plan - $50 per month in prepaid. Assuming 2 year stay ($50 * 24 = $1200)
Cost of some dumb phone for prepaid - $10
SO total cost is 700+1200+10=$1910.
Option 2 (buy from ATT)
Cost (expected) of phone - $300
Cost of plan - $40 for voice, $10 for messaging, and $25 for 2 GB per month data plan. SO totally $75 + taxes = $80. For 2 years contract - $80 * 24 = 1920
SO total cost is 300+1920=$2220.
Thus, Option 1 is cheaper. Also in option 1 everything (including data) is unlimited .
Why is prepaid so much cheaper than postpaid!! Are there some disadvantages in prepaid that I dont know??
I heard that in prepaid, the 3G data speed will be slower that postpaid!! Is it TRUE !! ??
if i weighed my options like you then id definitely pick option 1 since in prepaid you can always keep a check on how much you are spending whereas i have noticed with postpaid ppl tend to get carried away even if they swore they wudn't at start.. just my opinion. and one more thing you should consider is that most places you would spend time usually has wifi connection and you can prioritize in s2 so that it always uses a wifi connection wen available over a 3g one as i have been doin.. will save a lot on data costs if it is not unlimited.. plus speed is generally faster i am guessing from my observation.. haha so u now know wat u must do!!! that is get a set in india and have no regrets after but i am still a new user of smartfone having switched from blackberry after many years.. it would be wise to wait and see what other users have to say as well since i am a very new member here and my advice wont seem much helpful..
^thanks
You ment internet is faster in wifi over 3g or internet being faster in postpaid over prepaid?
wifi over 3g.. prepaid vs postpaid i have no clue! btw the at&t plan as of now is only for samsung I997 Infuse 4G.. be warned that they are totally different phones and dont evn think of it being a substitute for S2.. i am not aware yet of the exact release of S2 in us officially with or without a plan so it would be wise to look into that otherwise i recommend you buy a warrantied s2 from india itself asap.. good luck buddy

[Q] Unlocked White GS2 got AT&T Media Net switched to 2GB Data Plan

I got the White GS2 yesterday and this morning I got txt message that my $10 data plan was removed and got put onto a $25 - 2Gb blackberry plan. Is there anyone got their GS2 - IMEI detected as a blackberry curve phone on the AT&T OLAM? How can I get it back to my grandfather $10 data plan...need help ASAP. Thanks in advance.
Odd... perhaps call them up and give them the IMEI (or just the make and model if they dont ask for the IMEI) of your old feature phone and tell them it was a mistake and they need to switch it back.
I did...they switched me back..but their system flag me again and see my GS2 as a blackberry...and auto put me on a blackberry plan again.
is this a euro gs2 or the att version..
It is a white gs2 unlocked, the phone is from Germany..I got it off amazon.com.
what are the first 4 and last 4 of imei i wish to compare to my black euro version. never got flagged yet.
if you are going to pay the extra fee i would sell it on ebay anyway and get one of their versions.. at least make some money that way.
or the t mobile version once unlocked should work ok also.
It is 3553 xxxxxxx2358. I put it back onto my old phone now. I might just do your suggestion sell it to someone, but should I buy another GS2? Thanks for the contribution.

not good mine is 3553 xxxxxxxxx 4988 , but i have not been using it on at&t lately .. i have been using my sgs i, wonder if i start using it again if i will get a msg.
I posted in the other thread but tell them you no longer have a blackberry but a RAZR and give them some made up IMEI if they ask. Or even buy some cheapo Razr from eBay and use that. Then when everything is set move the SIM back to your SGSii.
Igkahn, you shouldn't worry... dunno why the phone I got that the IMEI got into the AT&T system as a blackberry.
aldo37, I did call them two times. They change me back to my old data plan but once I pop in the sim, turn it on...The at&t system switched me back to that $25 blackberry plan...the at&t guy told me that I have a blackberry...it made sound like I lie....the fact is that the IMEI on the GS2 in somehow showing that it is a blackberry. I think I just have to sell it and buy a black one.

Buy some cheap $10 razr on ebay and take it to the store and show them you do not have a blackberry. That'd be better than having to buy a whole new phone.
My black one is 3553xxxx1921. So far does not have problem yet. Will get GN if it get flagged....
This is actually a very good thing. You can use this to negotiate some kind of a retention plan.
I don't know about the us. But in canada without retention plan, the plan/price is just a joke.

Hrmm..should I stick with the I717 or go international

Let me first state my situation.
I am in a contract with unlimited data on Verizon with my galaxy nexus.
Despite not wanting to have a contract with two providers, I wanted the galaxy note so badly, I got the note on AT&T with a so so contract (3 gb data, unlimited texting, 450 minutes).
I live in Seattle so there is no LTE here.
I am worried that a superior phone will come out soon (SG III) or perhaps a quad core note and then I will be stuck in two contracts without many options.
So I can either take back my note and get the AT&T version and go with Straightsim and save a good chunk of money ($100/month on AT&T vs $45/month on Straighttalk). In Seattle, straight talk uses AT&T's network so I think my service will be about the same except I will have unlimited data/minutes/texting.
Or, I can take back my Note and get the international version and put it on Straighttalk.
Or, I can stay put.
If I buy a note off contract, I will have the option to get the Samsung Galaxy S III or Note II when it comes out (on Verizon or AT&T)...
Kind of think that getting into a contract for a phone without LTE speeds seems a bit absurd.
Also, the international version has more developers (for now) and a better cpu.
What do you guys think? If I wasn't in another contract on Verizon, I'd just stay put and hope that LTE comes to Seattle this summer.
I read that the Note will come out on VZW if you can wait.

I thought about that. One thing I forgot to mention is that for some reason at the office, my galaxy nexus (and before that, Galaxy S) get's terrible reception unless I am near a window.
AT&T customers at work get reception even in conference rooms in the middle of the building, so I was hoping that my AT&T note would as well (which it does).
I just don't like being cut off for 8 hours a day from calls and texts.
I guess since life isn't all flowers and unicorns, my verizon has great data speed (LTE) but my AT&T can actually make calls....lol
Guess it would be too much to have it all in one phone
I had the same problem with Verizon. Loved the LTE speed when I had reception but for 10 hours a day at work I was lucky to keep 1 bar of 3G. I got fed up and went back to AT&T. I do have LTE here in Phoenix so switching was easier. Though I did lose unlimited data on VZW, I'm much happier with AT&T, this Note, and their LTE is way faster right now.

Who cares what phone is released. No difference between them in WA since there is not att lte and the note doesn't support vzn lte.

I'm buying one today from ATT. Was gonna get the international however, being my area is getting LTE in June the ATT version makes sense.

I would take it back and try to get one on Craigslist. I got mine by trading my SII and throwing in some cash also. I know Straight Talk is cheaper but have you thought about Red Pocket? They give you unlimited talk and text and 2GB of data for $59.99 but the good thing about there plan is that your unused data rolls over to the next month. I have over 5GB now. I have read where Straight Talk is very fussy when you use a lot of data. Just a suggestion.

Are there any downsides to getting the international version?
The one thing I have been worried about is warranty. I see Amazon sells one with a warranty but the others don't have them...
I'd want the white one (only the dark blue one has a US warranty)

Which network do they use (AT&T or)? Do they have HSPA+ or just normal 3g?
How are their speeds?
The Note 2 won't come out anytime soon. The Note just came out in November. The international version has no carrier bloat and has a better processor. It's also already starting to get ICS.
AT&T has LTE and a guaranteed warranty.
You get a 2 year warranty from Samsung...if you buy from expansys USA they help send it off for you..
I use ensquared for damage etc...
No downside that lve had so far. I also am not getting lte anytime soon.

I'm with Mr DSL on this. Got my white att note preordered on the 14th. I'm disappointed by its performance.and the att bloatware etc. Bought the white international last week. To me I noticed the performance right away. Both stock but the international seems way faster no lag. Killer battle life etc
I don't have lte where I live so I'm keeping the international version. And selling my att note for 500 quick sale on craigslist and only out 200 bucks etc.paid 699.99 on amazon for the international version. Oh and love the physical home button and no att branding or bloatware.
But its all bout what u want. Also never wait for something down the road enjoy and get what u like..

Also if you want ics anytime soon the inter.. is a better bet. Who knows when at&t will release an update.
Also if you're worried about the next best thing the inter.. version should have better resell value since it has no branding.
Oh and of course the physical home button.

Easy enough to wait past MWC now but GSIII unofficial news may also happen hopefully within the next few weeks..
OP should have 30 days to return it to AT&T if he wants to exercise that option..personally at this point I'm leaning toward intl GT-N7000 if I decide to get a Note. Eventhough I'm close to an LTE market, ~80% of the time have fast Wi-Fi access & when I don't only ~5% of that time would be in LTE currently.
When I played with the AT&T I was disappointed not to be able to find the Video Maker & screen mode of the GT-N7000 possibly a result of the differing chipset..

Hello,
On the Galaxy Note we are covering 1 year warranty from Expansys. So if Samsung locally can not help you then you can contact us directly and we'll be able to get the handset repaired for you.
I hope this answers your question.

Strange how Expansys just dropped off of Amazon. I was ready to pull the trigger.
I would have had the international and the AT&T side by side to compare.
1 year warranty to me seems good enough as in a year later, I'll be on the next best thing and if the phone were faulty, I'm sure it would have broken within the first year.
I want to try red pocket because I've read around that if you use too much data on straight talk, they will close your account.
With red pocket it is 2gb a month but it rolls over. I probably use that much but I also have my Nexus with LTE, so I doubt i'm going to be using a lot of data off wifi on the Note.
Now the place selling the cheatest note on Amazon is this place:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/aag/detail...ER&isCBA=&seller=A1A0163V84UKHW#aag_legalInfo
for $675. Expansys was at $650. Not sure why they are no longer on Amazon because their website seems to infer that they are still in stock.
Their website only says dual band though and Amazon says quad band.
I'd prefer to buy from Amazon just because I'm a big customer of theirs and I have recourse with Amazon if I have problems with Expansys.
Dailysteals.com has the n7000 for $599 at the moment if anyone is interested. I'm sticking with this i717, but I'm not sure why.

Yeah. I have LTE already on Verizon and there is no LTE here, so it's a no brainer for me.
Amazon keeps on doing strange stuff with different sellers. I had finally got comfortable with buying from Expansys and now they've been replaced with a ton of other sellers at higher prices.
I guess expansys ran out.

Samsung trade-in program

Samsung is now offering a trade in for older phones after you buy a new samsung galaxy and send your old one in with a receipt.
http://www.samsungupgrade.com
I777 is quoted for $140
Which makes sense considering u can sell one in eBay for between 200-300.....
For those who don't wanna deal with selling to someone, its easier.
1. Buy S3 (Amazon preferred for $150)
2. Register IMEI's of trades and print pre-paid postage from http://www.samsungupgrade.com
3. Ship phone and receipt of new S3 (or Note) purchase
4. Receive check from Samsung in about 3 weeks (able to track status through website)
The I777 is going for $140 but you could also include up to 6 phones per redemption and they buy many manufacture's phones not just Samsung.
look's like it just went down but I already got mine through
Edit: Could also try http://www.samsungsafe2switch.com/
They should have clearly indidated as $140 for a dead, unpowered SGS2, $150 for SGS2 that runs stock ROM and $300 for SGS2 running custom ROMs such AOKP or CM9
I plan on unlocking my sgs2 and selling it on ebay. They look to go from 250-300

If by unlocking u mean taking 30 seconds to download the app from the market that does it for free I say go for it.
I wonder if they'll give me something for my epix with a busted charging port I'm still sitting on... I've owned enough of their stinkin phones they could give me something (Whatever the first color flip phone was, Blackjack, Epix, Captivate, SGS II and in a few days SGS III)

I believe target still has it (single/primary= $150) and Amazon (single= $150).
I called At&t and and pre-ordered from premiere to get activation waived and once I showed them it was $150 at target for the same line they offered $50 in credit on my bill.

Can't find a T-Mobile Gear S anywhere.

Like the title says, I've looked in every T-Mobile store and they're not selling any since it's a "year old", just the S2. Went to Best Buy...they just sell Sprint and Verizon versions but you can't get them unless you get a contract with them. I've looked online, and I'm scared to purchase one because most just say "750" without the model at the end (for example 750T for T-Mobile). I've found a AT&T watch and was thinking of ordering it since most of you guys on here have said it's compatible with a T-Mobile sim, but you only get 2G speeds, or I can get prepaid such as Straight Talk or H20 as well. Any suggestions as to where I can purchase a T-Mobile Gear S? Can't find anything on Ebay or Amazon

Can't find anything on Ebay or Amazon

where are you located? I'm asking because i can't find a sprint version anywhere around me (philadelphia) and i'm going crazy trying to figure out how to get the at&t one i've purchased to work standalone when i have sprint! It could be so much easier if i could just find a sprint version!

I'm located in the bottom of Texas lol. There's Sprint versions at my Best Buy but no T-Mobile Lol. I'm thinking of just getting it from AT&T and opening up a contract with them for 10 bucks a month. :/ I saw some on E-Bay but I rather not risk it from there.

I did, but he never replied. As for the prepaid sim, I can't find none of what they were talking about in this forum. I've looked for H20 and StraightTalk at my Wal-Mart, but there's no H20, and with StraightTalk, I don't know what card to get. They spoke of one expiring after 90 days (maybe that was the H20?) but every card there expires after 30 days, even if you don't use all the texting and calling minutes.

The AT&T $10 device plan only works if you already have a family shared plan with them. You also can't use it on T-Mobile's Wearable plan because T-Mo locks this plan to IMEIs of T-Mo version Gear S or Gear S2 only.
The Gear S is already over a year old. Most places already cleared them out for Gear S2. eBay is probably your only bet for any device of this age.
Swappa website has some good deals on Smartwatches..

Damn...but if I use the AT&T watch with the AT&T plan, I can still forward calls to my T-Mobile phone right?

Can you buy an AT&T and then buy an unlock code? It's only $20-$25 online for one.

Yes you can. I read that many people did that. AT&T is supposed to supply an unlock code if you call, but I've seen that many people had different outcomes. Some were able to get it, some had to keep on calling nad persisting, and others had no luck. Although beware that in unlocking the device, when you go to another carrier (such as T-Mobile) that it will have 2g or HSPA+ speeds instead of 3G or even 4G since the bands are different or something like that.
I sold my unlocked ATT gear S last month, because I managed to grab an LG watch Urbane 2nd edition LTE before they took them off the market. For what it's worth, I bought mine from ATT, had it unlocked by ATT, and used it on Tmobile with the wearables plan for a year. (As soon as I put the sim card in my LG watch, it did something to my wearables plan and i could never get it reinstated. In general, unlocked ATT Gear s devices no longer work with the $5 Tmo wearables plan, but with any other regular Tmo sim card.)
Anyhow, in New England, I was getting 3G speeds sometimes, if I recall correctly.
To get the ATT Gear S unlocked, you need to have been an ATT postpaid cell customer at some point, and provide that respective phone number to them. If you have a friend who is a customer, they could submit the unlock request for you as well.
Otherwise, ATT forces you to "wait 90 days" during which time you have to pay for a plan with them.
There was also an Ebay seller who was selling unlock codes for around $10 if memory serves me well.
By the way, the regular retail price for the ATT version is cheaper by $50 than Tmo's, so definitely worth going that route.
It would be unbelievably helpful if you'd let us know how much you love it =), on a side note I does anybody have a bricked Gear S? I'll buy it =)

Yeah, AT&T's stupid 90 days plan. Way too much. I don't wanna be paying 50 dollars a month for a watch. I found a friend who has a watch that is 1 month old and was selling it so I brought it, and it's from T-Mobile too so it's a win, win. It's only 5 dollars a month (plus an addition 10 for insurance). AT&T is selling the watch right now for $199 outright. T-Mobile isn't selling it at all, but before they took it down it was going for $250. I went with T-Mobile because $199 plus tax comes out to $220. Then I got to put 30% down for AT&T's stupid plan plus an additional $20 or $30 dollars extra (forgot for what) which comes out to $76 dollars total. So add that to the $220. Then the following month I'm going to have to pay a one-time activation fee of $15 dollars, PLUS the service which is $50 dollars (but if you're already a customer with them it's $10 a month), PLUS if you haven't already finished paying off the watch, you're going to have to put down money for that before the 3 months is over. Too costly in my opinion. I just payed my friend $120 (cause he has $80 left due in his account so I'm paying off that) and then just the $15 bucks a month so I'm good.
I think my friend has a bricked Gear S, but he has to send that back since they gave him the one that I have right now lol.

If you mean the Urbane, it's mindblowingly awesome, with a battery life that's out of this world. My Gear S was great for the year I had it, but the Urbane is so much better; I've been using it daily for almost 3 months now.
The only updates Google needs to make is allow voice calls over BT and a way to manually update APN settings, both possible with the Gear S.
Don't buy an att gear s if you plan to use the android rom on it. Att locked the bootloader on their gear s and so far there is no way to unlock it so no rom for us.
I have a T-Mobile version and I shopped for it on my local Craigslist. You just have to be careful yet persistent. Ask for better photos and definitely take a copy of the ad with you when you go to check it out for hopefully your purchase. My seller had a warranty replacement and it is in near pristine condition. I have replaced his original watch band, thanks to eBay. And I do have a broke clip on the charger cradle that I will eventually replace as well.
Also, Swappa is an excellent place to purchase items. There's 2 sides, there's the Swappa.com and then there's Boneyard where you purchase stuff not able to be sold on regular Swappa like broken glass, missing parts and devices for parts. Google both. Hope this helps!! If you have any questions, feel free to ask.
Now, I did in fact have an AT&T branded Gear S that I tried, unsuccessfully, to get to operate on T-Mobile. I wanted the wearables sim card and I put T-mobile's in it. It would NOT work for me as I was told by many support levels (twitter, email, and phone) that the T-Mobile wearables sim card was not provisioned for the AT&T branded Gear S. I gave up and sent that version Gear S back, getting a full refund and purchased what I described in my opening of this post.

I bought an AT&T branded gear S from swappable a couple of months ago and I am using it with my wearable sim card without a problem. I already had the plan though with a tablet and cut down the sim put it in the gear and called tmobile and they turned it into a data and phone line for me as it was only a data line.

NIce. I found a really good deal on a AT&T Gear S but not sure I want to get it because my luck isn't that good. lol So your AT&T Gear S works exactly the same on T-Mobile then? I don't have a tablet plan so not sure what I would have to do to go the route you did.

So far it's been working great. But I already had the plan so I don't know if it would work. Call tmobile and see if it could work. I mean they turned my data only plan into a phone line

I know a T-Mobile manager. I called him today but he was off. He's worked his magic before. So let me get this straight your watch has it's own number and you get 4G speeds?
