Today I flashed my phone for the first time from stock 2.3.5 to CM7.1. Now I'm wondering, doI have to do some weird complex procedure every time I want to switch to a different rom? Or can I just put it to the root of the SD and flash it via cmw?
Also, I read that to go back to the stock rom, I need to flash the whole package back. I have no idea what that means. Can anyone explain what it is and how to do it? Thanks in advance.
You need to find a full package file, one that has different boot, modem and pda and csc to flash in Odin.
which is opposed to the one package containing only one tar file!

Wow. Where can I find the file? So far I've only seen the one package ones. :/
EDIT: Also, do you know anything about the different rom flashing processes? Or is it just one? (Flash all through cmw I mean)

Thanks! I'd click but I've already given out my 5 thanks xD. So to install any random custom rom, I just put it to the root of my SD and flash using CMW? No other special random procedure needed? Nothing needs to be cleared or deleted? Lol, sorry for all the questions. Just making sure.
You have to backup your rom then wipe data/factory reset then wipe cache. Then you can flash ur desired rom

Hey!
Jeah, always do the BACKUP(better in CWM, but you can use the Titanium Backup too[its not backup ENTIRE ROM, only APPS and settings]), only then flash or do some serious things. You never know ahead, whats waiting under corner, if you flashing. Simple flash can break and you get stuck in the middle.
CHEERS!
I am new to flashing of ROM and have never done that,
After reading all above post, I want to ask if I flash any custom rom (Like cyanomod or modified stock rom) If I want to go back to stock rom of my Ace 2.3.4, can I restore the back up that I have taken from CWM. There are following files in the backup
Android.img
boot.img
cache.img
data.img
nandroid.md5
recovery.img
system.img
Sorry in advance if I am asking any silly question and Thanks in advance for the support

Those procedures change from rom to rom,for some you might need to be at a certain baseband while for others you might need to clear cache, data and dalvik cache.Flashing through cwm is the easiest method if you ask me and one precaution you have to take before flashing any rom is a FULL NANDROID BACKUP,you never know what might happen.

Basically, if u have those 5 files like MODEM CSC ... U need to flash with odin... If u jus have a .zip, u can flash it with CWM.

does it mean wipe data and wipe dalvik cache
and format system??
I believe wiping data & cache should be enough.
I flashed back to official ROM from unofficial CM7 using odin.
filesystem has no effect AFAIK for this.
Bayint Naung filesystem had an effect on this. If you flash stock firmware as onepackage you will get a bootloop, because onepackage doesn't format partitions back to rfs. But if you flash a mulitpackage firmware everything will by fine , it formats partitions back to rfs.

Multipackage is the one in sammobile
That Contrains 4 files?
Yes, if firmware have 4 files (PDA, CSD and other, I don't remember all) it is a multipackage.
Just download the stock rom. And flash it with odin.

Not just any stock rom dude. There r 2 types of stock roms. One package & multi(full) package. Multi package is the one that converts ur system from ext to rfs. If u flash one package on ext, ur fone wil go in bootloops.

Ur file system is ext4 now and stock Roms require rfs file system ...
Just flash a stock rom first, then restore your backup
P.S. confirm that the stock rom or custom rom based on stock u flash has rfs file system
Edit: or try to do a "wipe cache partition " if this doesn't work follow the above steps
well i guess that can be the problem. xperiatized is based on ext4 partirion system. and i've tried wiping cache but didn't worked.
i guess i have to flash rom through odin then :-(

Boot loop. Can most commonly be fixed by flashing stock firmware for your phone.
Can you confirm the model of your phone? I know the boot screen says GT-I9100, but what is printed on the label under your battery?
it says i9100 also so there's nothing wrong when choosing rom. do you know if -rw mounting has anything to do with this?
I had the same problem , wiped cache and dalvik cache and wiped data then installed jb compatible siyah and Rootbox jb 2.3 .. then my phone booted up
in ur case .. U have messed something up with a root app , and u will be able to flash slim ics and jb roms .. Other roms will give u a boot loop
Dont install a 4.0.4 rom and wipe anything .. Coz this will result in a hardbrick .. So be careful!!!

I think you are misunderstanding some things.. You must first root your phone with cf-root AND THEN, you must flash the Rom with the specified kernel. But you can take a shortcut by flashing siyah kernel. You don't need to rely on baseband version.

No. Did you read the first post on the CM10.1 Thread?
You have to be running an ics stock rom and then root it.
Afterwards you can then proceed to flash CM10.1.

Yes it will, no need for any super one click. Once uve flashed siyah, reboot in recovery (which will now be cwm recovery), make a nandroid before you flash anything. Would be a good idea to back up your apps using titanium backup, your sms msgs with an app like sms backup and restore etc. Then proceed to flash the rom, gapps, make wipes etc.

It's recommended you flash a custom recovery regardless if u want to flash some mods or roms. It always comes in handy and you have the option to backup the whole system and create an image file, so you'll be safe, if anything goes wrong with flashing someday or you screw your system, you can always recover it with the custom recovery. Pretty amazing

Unfortunately, we are not allowed to recommend stuff here and advertise. Just look under android development and read the comments, I'm sure you'll fine a good one. Don't forget to backup your current system first and your data. When you're done, you can test out roms not worrying much about if they work or not

Mod Edit
As ^^^meeklosh^^^ suggests:
"Best" or "Recommend" ROM/kernel posts are not allowed on XDA.
Please test these things for yourself.
This is the only way you will get an unbiased opinion, and then, you can decide for yourself if it meets YOUR needs.
Don't forget to make a nandroid before you start.
