Hello Guys, Im new to this forum with N number of Qns , because Im just a beginner of the smart phone users. I have got a new SE Xperia x10 and was very excited to capture the pictures using 8.1M camera.. But unfortunately the quality of the pictures that I have taken so far made me disappoint, still the HD video recording looks good. My question here is when the Video quality is good, how can the image quality be poor that we use the same camera for both the purpose. Also, is there any fix available to improve the camera quality, because i strongly believe that its not a hardware issue.
Thanks in advance
Most people have found that using a camera app called "Vignette" improves photos taken greatly.
Here is a link to it in the Android Market: https://market.android.com/details?id=uk.co.neilandtheresa.NewVignette&feature=search_result

hmm..Let me also have a try.. but can anyone shed some light on my question, rather than finding out an alternate solution, Im very curious to know about the cause of the poor Image quality with a "8.1" camera

Yes.. However I'm still not clear about what could be the possible reasons for a 8.1MP camera to perform so badly while dealing with the still images, but works good while dealing with the Video recording..Hardware or Software or Settings or etc..????. I beg your pardon if I have been so much curious.
One thread is enough.
Also, practise with the camera.
It's one of the best 8MP phones so the problem shouldn't be the phone

I really think you need to learn more about photography. Mp dont mean anything when it comes to camera quality. I take outstanding pictures with this phone...and if you would like a link to another forum on pictures taken with this camera i can show you....it will blow your mind. I already explained how to get the best out of your camera in another thread. Did you turn off image stabiliser?
Do you expect dslr quality from a smartphone? Cuz it wont happen.
I would strongly suggest practicing with your camera like flo said.
Im not trying to be rude, im really not. But this is one of the best camera phones out there believe it or not.

Ok, here are my settings:
Capturing Mode: Normal
Resolution: 6mp Wide (16:9) I use that more that 8mp because I like the widescreen pictures...and remember lower mp doesn't mean less quality!
Scenes: Normal
Focus Mode: Infinity...or macro for close up shots
photo light: always off
self timer: off
metering: Center weighted or average...spot metering is used for when your taking a picture and the light from the background is darkening your subject. Its not what you wanna use all the time...only for those situations when needed. average metering also known as matrix would be the most accurate.
White Balance: depends...if its cloudy outside ill use cloudy, if its bright and sunny ill use daylight or just auto. Most of the time I stick with auto. But playing with it properly gets nice results
image stabilser: always always off!
smile level: Normal
the +/- is the EV control I was talking about. yes it goes from -2 to +2.
And here is how I always always use it.
if its bright and sunny outside, or you just have alot of light, I will usually lower it to -1 or -0.7
Inside pictures, or low light situations I lower it to about -0.3 maybe -0.7. What that does if darkens the photo but eliminates low light noise.
Try that for a while and see what kind of pics you get. Also, keep a steady hand. When I take pictures with my phone I wrap both hands around the phone and hold it firmly to reduce any hand shake that might happen. I just find that works best for me.
@manussnair: Check your PM.
Thanks

Yep I know.
the software is what determines the quality you are looking for. The camera will construct the picture/video information like pixel info, frames, etc. but the software is responsible for cleaning it up.
i find the X10's camera amazing, it takes crystal clear pictures IMO and i can even use them as wallpapers on my PC and they are still clear.
the X10 will always be the best
no idea :-I mine is in a gud quality.. hehe

I want to make this E3D camera great but so for not sure. Ok in good lighting I'm happy. The 3d pictures have surprised me being much better than I imagined.
Now in lower light situations(not dark) the 2d pictures or ok while 3d pics get some yellow tint. I can get better results in 3d adjusting white balance and exposure.
Ideally I would like to stick to one setting for overall best results.
At this point I really don't have setting I'm happy with to share but I'm working on it
I am disappointed with the shutter button on the side of the phone, press half way to focus cool, press all the way down to take picture and there is a lag and if not perfectly still you get blur. The shutter button on the screen is faster and works better so far. I was excited about the dedicated shutter button but now I don't know.
Anyway hoping to get some setting from you camera pros
playing around
I've been shooting with sharpness, exposure and contrast at +1 and still playing around with white balance. No luck with back lit pictures of people even with flash come out dark.
What works for you ?

Im with you 100% on this. I was at a family function and took clearer/faster pix with the on screen shutter button
I agree. The biggest dissapointment so far. The dedicated shutter button is pretty much useless. very slow, blurry compared to on screen button
I've been having no problem using the 3D camera, the video though is killing me.
My white balance for 3D stills comes off just fine, the exposures are fine. My one problem is with the dedicated shutter button and the time it takes to fire, I am used to shooting with a Nikon D3 and a Nikon D300 as my back up. This said, it feels more like a point and shoot camera in the way it focuses and fires, which is fine, I wouldn't expect it to shoot like top end DSLRs.
The problem I'm having with the video is that one I start recording it doesn't adjust the exposure while recording. This was particularly noticeable when I was shooting a series if videos while 4 wheeling yesterday. The video camera doesn't like going from shady into bright areas.
This is my 2 cents in it. I'm looking forward to root access, once I can look at the camera drivers and sensor settings I'll be able to reprogram them like I do point and click cameras.

I notice for 3d pics. You want to fill the picture up as much as possible. I've even taken macros that came out fairly good. When using the shutter, like any other cam, make sure to push it in half way to focus. Look at your 3d screen and move it around until you get the perfect three d effect. Hold still, hold your breath, and shoot. Give cam five second delay incase auto lighting is on and has it set to slow shutter mode. ISO aka... Also there is a new option. Exposure. High lighted areas, expose less, in low light expose more, change your settings at every shoot take. Your brightness, contrast, saturation , etc. Day use I found 1, 2, 3. R my settings. Contrast . 1, saturation 1 or 2 depending on exposure settings, and brightness, and sharpness three. Great thread. I bout this phone for its camera as I love photos as a hobby. So I was hesitant going from.8 Lo to 5. I havnt notice a had difference. I'm a very happy EVO 3d fan. Camera gets a 11 out of 10

as you all know it doesn't have flash and not even auto-focus feature. so its pretty depressing to take pics especially at night.
if anyone knows how to increase camera quality(especially at night) by any means like some settings or a different camera app then let me know. thanks.

the only possible feature available is to turn on hdr..(not auto)and set exposure manually..this will give a clear pic even in low light..am perfect with this..and use google camera's hdr to take pics of notes or books,etc..it will be more prominent..and the camera is good outdoors...but indoor use is horrible..
and yes one more thing..if you have time and want to take macro shots..just place a magnifying glass infront of your camera lens and adjust the distance to get a clear shot..
thats all i have discovered till now..
[QRCODE]just hit thanks if i helped[/QRCODE]
I had the s7 edge and I do a lot of macro photography with it. . Loved the functionality of it . I have the s9+ now and it's horrible. What made it successful on the s7edge was that when you used the focus sliding rail the image blew up so you can see the detail . When the shot was in perfect focus you let go and the immage went to it's normal size . You can get perfect macro shots. The s9+ however sucks. It doesn't blow it up and puts this green "in focus" junk over your subject so you can't ever tell if it's in focus . It never is . In macro it does a horrible job. The s7edge I could use one handed. The s9+.... I could zoom in but requires to much movement for macro then focus then zoom back out . By this time your macro shot is not in focus adding the green junk that impedes your ability to see if it is actually in perfect focus . Horrible .... so my question is how can I get rid of the green stuff and have the auto blow up when using the focus slider? Or is there an app that I can use to have the amazing functionality of the s7edge? So far I'm having to use my old phone for the macro shots . . Please help
Thanks Gary
I have the Exynos S9+ and take a lot of pictures with it, especially insect macro shots in pro mode.
I noticed that there is a big difference in the closest focus distance between manual and auto focus modes.
When using the manual focus slider and dragging it all the way to the bottom, it focuses about 5cm farther than with the auto focus.
I have tried this on an S8 camera and with it the manual and auto focus closest distance is the same and working as expected.
This is pretty annoying and makes the manual focus unusable for me because I cant get close enough to the object.
In the screenshots I took shots of a ruler. you can see that in auto focus the focusing is on 1cm and in manual its on 5cm.
I wonder if anyone else noticed this on their S9+?
yes i saw this a couple months ago, i hope if this fix with updates but no, problem is still here

Yep, I was hoping it would get fixed since May when I got the phone but I guess samsung was too busy with the S9's camera commercials then the actual camera.
