My X2 is rooted but I can't get google wired tether to work.
http://code.google.com/p/android-wired-tether/
Anyone know why?
Google wifi tether works fine.
Im using easy tether and working like a charm. What wired are you using/
I would like to use the google wired tether as linked above. One click action and no drivers to install. PDAnet or EasyTether require drivers to be installed in windows for them to work. My last phone (HTC Eris) was rooted and the google wired tether worked fine. Doesn't want to work for some reason on my X2
I got it working one night on my X2 I dont recall how but Verizon picked up on it and threw the call 611 in my face. Went to wireless tether.
I tried this app too on my PC. It recognized that there was some sort of connection between the phone and the computer but said there was a network cable unplugged which I didnt understand. I havent been able to find any usb tether app that works. But maybe they made the phone to not be able to without the paid service.

I've scoured the internet hinting for some way to tether my X2 without paying Verizon $20 a month to no avail, is there a way of doing this? I prefer not to have to buy an app, but I guess I will if I need to. It's rooted, and I've tried the WiFi Tether app from google source codes to no avail. Thanks.
Are you rooted? If so I use wireless tether for root....no problems so far.
You can install PdaNet without root for tethering via USB or bluetooth. The new 3.0 version works great and charges while tethering allowing continuous usage. It's free for 30 days I believe then "https" connections are disabled but everything else works.
Download: http://junefabrics.com/android/index.php
If you have root access you can use Wifi tether. It's also free and available from:

I tested the Droid/Milestone version with the X2 and it works well but battery consumption is high.
PDANet is a nice no-root option but rooting your phone is the bee's knees. Also I prefer wireless tether as it's more pain free and looks cooler (and tethers more than just your PC).

Wireless tether doesn't want to work, and I'm trying to turn it into a wifi hotspot.
Wait wait wait, you said the milestone version works? Interesting, I shall have to try that, thanks!
Alright, so. When I try installing the milestone, it gives me a space error. I have 3.0 installed, and the phone thinks it's working, buy my laptop just won't connect to it. It trys, and eventually gives up. I don't know, I'm at a loss.
I'm having the exact same problem using windows 7 64 bit. No matter what version of wireless tether (or barnacle for that matter) I use, I can't get it to work.
I'm new to this whole thing. What about the built in tethering that is available in the wireless settings? It looks like it'll do Bluetooth and wifi built in, OTB no problem. I tested it and it works great. Can Verizon somehow monitor your use of that built in utility, and that's how they would charge you?
I also was able to connect my Transformer via Bluetooth and tethering worked with no specific configuration on the x2. That must use the same utility.
I don't understand how they would know you're tethering other than by traffic volumes. If I'm not using much traffic, how would they ever know?

I'm having the same problem with my windows 7 64 bit computer. Wireless tether works fine on my 32 bit windows 7 netbook.
Wireless tether
d/l'ed wireless tether 2.x, gave me a kernal error which "limited access control", gave superuser access am now connected via wireless network speed test 48 kb download, 274 kb upload. SCREAMIN'... Windows 7 64 bit.
SUCCESS!

Well, not screaming...I just tested my cable connection and it is SCREAMIN', but surfing and download speeds acceptable through the tether.
Wait, if we use the stock Mobile Hotspot app we have to pay? Oh sh*t i thought it was free...I tried it earlier today, since my grandmother's house doesn't have wifi (or a computer), and it didn't work. Hopefully they don't charge me for something I didn't even use..
Can you tether an existing wifi connection to other devices?
Is anyone currently using a free tether app for a Rooted TB?
This is what you want to use:
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list
Download the latest. I have found this to be the best app for the job.
Roger that! I will give it a shot.
Seems to work great! I should only use this app alone and not the hotspot widget, right?
Yup thats all you need for tethering freedom
F...king Whoa!!! Makes rooting worth it.
Does this still work for anyone?
I was using both the built in portable hotspot in CM7 and occasionally the WiFi Tether app on my Thunderbolt and everything was fine until Verizon started blocking third party tethering apps *which apparently only affected Gingerbread users...
droid-life.com/2011/05/31/verizon-begins-blocking-wireless-tether-asks-that-you-purchase-a-plan/
Since then when I tried to connect to the WiFi hotspot from my laptop it would just hang while connecting, it would eventually give an error -something along the lines of: "unable to obtain an IP address" and if it ever did connect it would say connected with no internet access. The only app that would work for me was Barnacle WiFi Tether, and I'm still using it with no problems, just wish there were more options, and I'm scared it will get blocked soon too. I'm loving LTE, and with an unlimited plan at $29 a month it's just begging to be shared with my laptop.

The built-in wifi hotspot in CM7 works fine so I haven't found the need to try the wifi tether app linked above lately. If you'd clicked the "wireless tether" tag in the article you linked you would have seen some suggestions and statements that it works fine.
http://www.droid-life.com/tag/wireless-tether/
The CM7 tether can be a little buggy and give out after a while. Android tether has always worked the best for me.
Verizon can't block tethering apps on your phone, they can only get Google to remove them from the market (which they have) - though there is still a couple like barnacle floating around in the market.

Only downside is that if you abuse it (maybe 30+GB month) you're at risk of getting your data transfer rate slowed down. But the next month as long as you didn't use a lot the previous month it'll go back up.
Thanks for the info !
Another option for USB tethering would be PDANet. I use that for tethering my Mac
installed wifi-tether 3 beta2 (latest from google) to my rooted Thunderbolt stock ROM
I start wifi tether, computer connects, but when I open the browser it never loads a page
Use 2.0.7
Via my HTC Thunderbolt

Do you know if any tether apps work ? OR we have to wait until we are able to root.
I do believe we will have to wait, at least for a wireless version. This morning Pdanet issued version 3.02 of their app and by all indications it should work.
So for now that will have to do.
TS out

I have PDANet and got the Photon to tether this morning.
I used Pdanet with my Photon and netbook this morning, works fine.
Do you know which tether app will work ? My phone is rooted. I tried wifitether....it works for some but not all devices. I also try barnacle and it does not work at all. Any setup that I have to do ?
i use easytether pro for wired tether. works fine.
Hello, swapped a NS4G 2 days ago for the Photon and got it to work with my HP WM7 laptop without an app or paid subscription. Posted the following for someone at androidcentral and thought it might help...
"No additional drivers installed. If you're not familiar with tethering click 'help' in setting/tethering mobile hotspot for directions - you will initiate pairing via the Photon and after paired phone will say 'paired but not connected' and computer will show 'stereo audio paired'. Withing the BT manager on you computer click your phone settings, find 'networking' / 'access an external network via a BT gateway' and click connect - should be good to go. Instructions are for WM7, not sure about other OS"
He said it works fine for him with XP as well. No-go thus far with any HotSpot attempt although I hear PDAnet will work, and no-go on a Streak 7 via BT(claims a rooted Streak might work, but had no luck on a Streak 5). Haven't tried a USB connection but believe it will work fine for WM7 and XP. I understand there's a 'mod' for the EVO3D to use HotSpot without root or subscription and will explore unless someone else here can shed some light.
Note: if you plan on using this 24/7 Sprint may have something to say about it, but as best as I can tell - no issues with moderate use.
Has anyone been able to get pdanet or wifi tether to work on the photon?

PDANet works on mine. I think wifi tether will work if you're rooted. I am not rooted, so cannot say for sure.
I just rooted. I installed wifi tether. The phone makes it look like its working but if it does not show up in the network list of any of my devices like my laptop and my tablet. Anyone have wifi tether working after root?
I used the 3.2 beta of WiFi tether on my rooted photon and it worked great for me.
Which WiFi tether are you using? Who is the author? Did you get it from the market?
Nevermind, I picked up Barnacle Wifi from the market and it appears to work fine. I am posting this message from my Macbook over the barnacle wifi on my photon

Scratch this! The Barnacle program does work but when you turn it off and I did this twice to repeat it, I had to reboot my Macbook, my phone and for whatever reason why my home router in order to get my Macbook and Photon to connect to my home network again. So I guess back to square 1, anyone know a program that works properly? I have tried many now including different versions of WiFi tether and my Photon will not show up on any of my device networks.
Pdanet works fine for me!

I already reported PDAnet works fine. Not free but I've been using it since my Hero days almost 2 years ago and its been well worth the cost.

I downloaded out directly from their website.
i had to change the power settings then it worked fone 10+mbps when retrieving media
I used pdanet to USB tether and ir0t worked great. It was almost too easy!
I can confirm that WiFi Tether if you go to there website the 3.1 Beta 2 appears to work perfectly on a rooted Photon. My phone now shows up as a network and with security on and everything my tablet and laptop surfed the net no problem.
I disagree 3.2 doesnt work , the best you can get is adhoc and it tells you that access control can not be enabled
I can confirm that my paid-for copy of PDAnet 3.02 works on my Windows laptop w/ my non-rooted Photon over USB. However, PDAnet does not do wifi tethering.

What does your comment even mean. So is only adhoc bad? What is the use of access control?
What would be the ideal situation? Sorry for asking so many questions but I have never used the wifi tether 3.2 app before.

3.02 works for me without problem. Are you using the free or paid version? The free version has some major limitations.
easytether works, not talking about pdanet but the wifi tethering app doesnt

Just a heads-up for anyone trying to connect to WiFi Tether with some/most Android tablets (like my Xoom). You might need to modify your device to be able to join ad-hoc networks. For the Xoom, it was as easy as replacing the wpa_supplicant binary.
Before I changed that file, my Xoom couldn't see the wireless network that my MoPho was broadcasting.
