Hello,
I have a Droid 3 and I was wondering if it was possible to somehow partition a part of my SD Card off for a virtual flash drive and basically use it as storage without the need to install drivers or anything like that. I tried to search around the forums and it looks like WM5torage would be a good option only if it was available for Android devices. Is there a alternative solution out there for Android devices (one that would work with a Droid 3)?
Basically, I want to use a small virtual drive (that would be located on my phone or SD card) and plug it into arcade games that allow you to store/edit game data on your flash drive. Of course, I would normally use USB Mass Storage mode to do such a thing but it won't work on arcade machines which I'm going to assume is due to the fact that the machines don't have the drivers.
Regards,
~Mark

hey guys, I just got the hd2 yesterday, and it alread was loaded android miui onto it. I was just wondering, how do I mount a sd card from windows mobile so i can see the contents of the card on a computer? What I'm trying to do is, use a sd card that doesn't have android on it in windows mobile, but i don't have a card reader. I know thres a way to put my micro sd into my hd2 and connect it to my macbook ( i dont have any virtual machines for windows so the sync software won't work ) so I can view all the files and put the necessary files for android on it. I have the clarity rom 6.5 and in the settings in connections/usb it just says allow usb connection or something like that. everytime I connect to my mac it doesn't recognize an external device, but my hd2 charges. When i boot it into android i can mount my sd card, but the problem is i dont have android on the other sd card that i want to modify, so I can't go into android and mount my sd card to modify files. So to make a long question short, HOW DO I VIEW/MODIFY THE CONTENTS OF MY SD CARD ON MY MAC WITH ONLY MY HD2 AND USB CABLE? This is my first post, so please go easy on me.
if you set the hd2 to disk drive mode the mac should see it as a usb hard disk. shouldnt it? (in windows mobile, not android, dunno nuffink about android)
how do i do this? I have never used windows mobile. ever. thanks for the help!
well when you plug in the usb cable, normally you get a popup (on the hd2) asking what you want, actyive sync, disk drive or (sometimes) internet sharing.
if it doesnt, you can go
settings tab menu all settings connections usb to PC
or settings tab other usb to PC
select disk drive, connect (or reconnect) USB cable.
you sometimes have better luck with switching usb mode if you havent already connected the device that session. try it from a fresh phone and pc reboot, put the phone in disk mode then connect usb.
(just as an added point of interest, you can use the hd2 in usb disk mode to boot a PC from a suitably formatted bootlable sd card, so it is using real usb hard disk mode. I use it to boot to ubuntu when im testing faulty machines.)
I only have one usb to pc, and it says when i tap it,
enable advanced network functionality.
no other settings. is something wrong? I am on clarity rom.
oh and im on clarity rom, but for some reason its not doing anything when i plug it into the mac
dunno what to say then, you are looking for the screen as my image.
G'nite, good luck.
you might claim to be a noob, but you certainly know what you're doing and you're on the right track!
here are the facts:
1. the HD2 is TOTALLY capable of what you require, i.e. usb disk mode
2. point 1 is true in both WM6.5(.x) and android (and you have already used the feature first-hand in android!)
3. point 2 is true only for WM ROMs and android builds in which the chef has chosen to provide the ability to toggle the usb disk mode option (this feature is present and fully usable in 90+% of the available ROMs/builds and in 100% of the ROMs/builds i've tried personally!)
4. given point 3, i find it hard to believe or understand why the chef of this "clarity" ROM you speak about left out the option! maybe it is there but moved to a different section of settings as samsamuel has suggested. maybe it WAS there but somehow something got corrupted/screwed and now the option has been wiped out? maybe try hard resetting your WM.
my honest and humble suggestion to you is to post in the thread of the "clarity" ROM and ask the chef/users of the ROM.
you seem very comfortable with the tweaking and ROM scene, so why not try a different WM ROM (i suggest NRGZ's "energy" ROM series)? you are already using android, and changing the WM ROM is a whole lot easier and straight forward if your primary OS is android (like yours truly!); nothing to backup/restore, no apps to install/configure, no contacts/messages backup/restore, etc.
i am happily using an old NRGZ ROM from june 2010, i keep WM in flight mode and simply use WM as a "bootstrap" into android. my WM is properly tweaked and configured to my liking just in case android ever screws up and i end up having to rely on WM until i get android sorted. hasn't happened yet, but fingers crossed!
I'm wondering how to switch between the different screens you see when you click on the USB icon in notification area when connected to PC. One has the android guy and an icon to turn on or off USB storage and the other has the three choices where you pick between charge only htc sync and disk drive, and then click done. I noticed with different roms i get a different one but want to use the one i like, is there a way to do this? thankyou
I don't believe you can. I would say it's based on the software version of the ROM your running.

Only HTC STOCK based ROMs such as the original Eris ROM, xtrSENSE, xtrROM, and other similar ROMs have the one including HTC Sync as an option.
I have no idea if you can change the look of the screen, or how to go about it if you can.
I don't even use the traditional method of mounting the SD card anymore. For many months I've been using, first a widget called SD Share/Dual Mount SD which allows you to mount the SD card to the computer without dismounting it from the phone.
Then Multi Mount SD came along which has an option to automount the SD card to my PC whenever I connect the USB cable. Now I use this. It also has a widget but I don't need or use it since it automatically mounts and dismounts. Note if you reboot either the phone or computer while it's still connected you'll have to disconnect and reconnect it once one or both devices are rebooted before it'll automount again. At least with the current version.
SD Share/Dual Mount SD now apparently has this capability, too.
Also, Windows and Linux programs like QtADB (recommended) and Android Commander (I never personally got it working but I know other people did) allow you to access the system areas of your phone PLUS your SD card through a Windows GUI without mounting the SD card in the usual way. It does this because deep down it uses ADB for everything. I think it comes with the components it requires though, so I don't think you need to install the complete Android SDK though. I don't know for sure since I have the SDK installed anyway.
just wondering if any smart devs have any thoughts on this:
When the Atrix (or i suppose any android device) is in usb storage mode it runs as a simple mass storage device.
So is it possible to boot a PC from the atrix like you would boot a portable OS (Ubuntu, WinPE, ect) from a USB flash drive?
The SD card or the Internal storage has the room for it, but i don't know how you'd go about making either a bootable device.
It'd be a good diagnostic tool when fixing PCs, and along with webtop would make it a awesome tool to use as a tech.

I was thinking about this actually.
I think we have to first partion the SD card and install the portable OS on one of those partions.
I don't have an atrix yet but I'm going to try something with my older phone I think I can make this work just give me sometime.
Any luck with this?
I plan on trying GParted (free GUI disk partition editor)... http://gparted.sourceforge.net/
It offers quite an array of filesystem options including, but not limited to:
ext2 / ext3 / ext4
fat16 / fat32
linux-swap
ntfs
ufs
xfs
I'm not sure if my rooted AT&T Atrix will reject my attempts to create an ntfs partition, or if GParted will even recognize it. But it's still worth a try

Hi all.
Here's the situation:
I have a 32 gb Sandisk (unsure of the class) sd card I've used with 2 different phones for at least over a year now. I took the card out of my phone to connect it through my laptops built in card reader for the purpose of transferring large files (card reader speeds are much faster than usb mounting through the phone for me). When I put it in the computer Windows wouldn't recognize it. Now it won't mount in my phone at all, and it won't work correctly on my PC. When I connect it to my computer it says the card needs to be formatted before use, but then when I go to format it, it shows up on the Windows formatting screen as only having a 30.6 mb capacity and I get the message "Windows was unable to complete the format" whenever I try to format it, no matter the settings.
So my question is, how do I get the darn thing to work again? I think something must have happened between shutting my phone down to remove it and putting it in my computer. I just don't know what. Anyone else ever experience this? (I've already given up on recovering all of my files, but if it's possible to save them that would be amazing )
Things I've tried:
formatting via Windows
formatting via android
formatting /external_sd via Clockworkmod recovery
a couple different data recovery/partitioning programs (Partition Wizard and PhotoRec/TestDisk
also using "chkdsk" in windows command prompt returns saying that the disk is in the "RAW" format.
Additional info:
Phone: Motorola Droid RAZR HD (XT926) (Verizon)
ROM: XenonHD 11.01 (Android version 4.2.2, AOSP based)
Sorry if this is more lengthy than necessary, just trying to be thorough and cover all the bases!
Thanks in advance for your help!
I have a Galaxy Prime 3 which is basically a cheapo version of the Galaxy S5. On my old S5 I had TWRP installed which was extremely useful for mounting the SD card as a USB drive and then plugging it into a PC to boot from it with install iso or utility iso.
It is not possible to get TWRP on this J320A as far I as have found, and the only app purporting to do boot from sdcard over USB (drivedroid) did not work for me. Is there any way I can use my phone to boot a PC over USB cable? I know its much "simpler" to use a flash drive or burn a CD/DVD but I like hacking things to their fullest. Any suggestions?
