[Q]-Slow Network speeds on 3D - HTC EVO 3D

So i am getting about .5 mbps down speeds (when lucky normally .3). Just ran a test and it is actually .12 at the moment.!!!!!!!!
My wifes Iphone right next to mine gets double if not triple that. She got 1.04 and mine was at .34 when i tested once.
I am stock with not a whole lot running on the phone. Seems like within the last month websites that used to take 2 seconds to load now take anywhere from 10-15-30 seconds to load up.
Has something changed with the phone software that is crippling my phone? Is there something i can do to improve my speeds? I dont live in a HUGE city so over crowded network i dont think is a major issue. This just sucks Pandora and Audiogalaxy are barely useable when i want to stream music...
Thanks!

Those net speed apps change so much that they are pointless in real life. Try opening up web pages and see how much of a difference there is.

Have you tried removing the proxies? Should help 3g pick it up a bit. Worth a shot and if it doesn't help you can just set them back to stock.

Yes i have tried that a clear difference. it finished on the iphone in two seconds and my 3D took the 10-15-30 seconds dependng on which page.
the website i was using was rotoworld and yahoo sports. looking at fantasy news and sports stuff.
I dont really want to mess with proxies if there is a chance that this will crash my phone or cause issues with sprint.

Well also temember a iphone only loads half of most pages. (Flash)
Sent from my PG86100 using XDA Premium App

i dont think flash has anything to do with it in this case.

same slowness here, with my og evo was getting 10 megs with wimax.. oh well we got 3d right?? huh huh lol

I was having slow data speeds and called customer service and they ran some test and told.me.to take it.into the store and found out i had a bad motherboard in the phone got a new one and now speeds are back to normal
Sent from my PG86100 using xda premium

i will have to check that out...see what they can do

Messing with the proxies doesn't piss anyone off, LOL
Not sprint or your phone, and its an easy trick to get some extra speed. You don't even need to be rooted or anything.... You do need your msl tho...

Does the new iPhone on Sprint run on the 800mhz band? If so, that could be part of the speed difference too. I'm not sure if that was confirmed, but 1 reviewer made mention of that. It was posted on here at some point, but I'm too lazy to go digging around for it.

3G only. Sprint doesn't care, in fact it's supposed to be set like this but apparently some OTA updates set it to CDMA only. Try it, you'll see.

i've removed the sprint proxies & whatnot, tried every sprint PRL i could find & the only thing that works is a Verizon PRL sadly.
At my house i get .12-.50kbps on average, usually stuck at 1x unless i turn off my mobile network & turn it back on. Funny thing is, right by one of the sprint stores i get 1.2mbps - 1.5mbps

mine was already set to automatic with synergy. Other ROMs i've had to change this. Didnt help me one bit

Hi,
this is what I did on my sensation, and also on Evo3D, and connection works better:
dial *#*#4636#*#* and then press “Phone Information” > Toggle Chiphering to OFF > Turn off Radio > Turn on Radio > Toggle Chiphering to ON
best regards

My 3G speeds were fine until today. That is, I never noticed it being slow. Today I'm getting 50-100 kbps down, and 200-300 kbps up (wtf?). So my upload speeds were always around that speed, but the downloads used to be over 1000.
I tried the above two suggested checks. It was already set to automatic.
Dunno what's up. Maybe Sprint's having a bad day around here.

Seriously, the best thing about the Evo was the ability to turn off 4G. Am I missing something here or did they omit this feature from the Thunderbolt? Cant find it anywhere. Without doing anything other than having email sync'd, a few texts and a few speed tests my battery is under 40% in under 4 hours from a full charge.
Open the dialer app :

3) Scroll down to the 2nd drop down box and select the following :
CDMA+LTE/EvDO auto for auto switching between CDMA and LTE
CDMA auto (PRL) for CDMA only

If you want to turn data off entirely, that is in Settings, Wireless & Networks, Mobile Network checkbox.
Or do you want to have it on but slow?
it's not an option via the power widget?...oh no...hopefully custom roms will resolve this

The first thing I did was go into sync settings and disable the weather, stocks, and news syncing. Seems to help a lot, since I don't even use those stupid things.
So if you cant turn off 4g, does it sit there and keep searching for all of us not in a 4g area?
Is it smart and stops searching after a while, or long pauses in between searching?
This is for sure a deciding factor for me.
It's simple, because it does use a lot of power. LTE is not Wimax and this isn't a EVO running a 1st gen CPU.

I am not an expert, but afaik, if it does not find an LTE signal, it will camp on CDMA (eHRPD) to be specific. After that, the radio probably periodically scans for a 4G pilot in order to jump up to 4G if / when available. The frequency of the scan is probably dependent on who makes the LTE modem portion and how HTC has written their radio software.
Im sure it wont take long for someone to figure out how to modify that scan interval. Modifying that (depending on factory settings) IMO would have a good impact on battery life. We shall see with in the next day or so...
Really, that was the *BEST* thing about the EVO? I agree the option should be there, but it's not really a big deal.
Why assume it "scans" at all? I know they look for a data connection when they don't have one, but if I were designing the system, I would have the tower tell the phone what it has on the existing data connection, not make the phone ask.
I have to say that the title of this thread was EXACTLY what I was thinking when I couldn't find a way to turn off 4G. I doubt that it doesn't eat battery. Whether or not it is more efficient than EVDO is an interesting question.
I wonder if the lower band for 4G gives better performance, and thus doesn't require as much power as Sprint's.

My 3vo is getting max 126 download and even worse upload. Four people in my family have EVO 4g, they are consistently getting close to 1 mbs and similar uploads. Tried the proxy fix and everything. My speeds are typically better where I live, but are horrible this holiday weekend. Could it be the towers here don't like the 3vo, or should I exchange the phone?
Thanks

Try 2 things before you take it to Sprint:
First, update your PRL and Profile (Under Menu-Options-System Updates) and then hard reset the phone. (Turn it off, pull battery, turn it back on) then test your speeds
If that doesn't work:
Try the MSL fix Here
Make sure to write down your defaults, as I hear Sprint doesn't like it when you mess with that stuff, and set it back if it doesn't help.
If all else fails, go to Sprint, whine or something. Maybe they'll give you an AirRave. I'm just not a fan of having other people fix my problems.
I get same DL as you, upload speed is like 18. Only getting 2-3 bars most of the time even though I pulled up the sprint map and there are supposedly towers all over the place here.

The over the air provisioning is not authenticating your 3g (only 1x speeds)
The fastest and easiest fix is to call sprint tech support and have then perform a HLR RELOAD or refresh on your data profile.
From there, you will go to settings then update profile from your evo
Note: if the hrl reload doesn't work, have tech support "REPROVOSION YOUR DATA PROFILE" (exact words)
Trust me. This works
What happened was when you dis the hands free activation, 3g was not authenticated correctly.
Hit the thanks button if I've helped you

I has the same problem all last week, it turns out (God, knows why) but my EVDO setting was CDMA and it had to be set to Automatic - Once I changed this, I was getting much better speeds.
called sprint. they did something and asked me to reset the phone after we hung up. same speeds afterward, 98 down, 70ish up. said they can't do anything else because i am calling from the phone i need service on. i don't have another phone to call from right now so i'll have to call back later and request the reloads mentioned above.
after resetting my phone, i did prl update, profile update and the proxy fix. still getting same speed results.

Those are 3g speeds so sounds like authentication for you isn't an issue. Probably just the network where you are.
i would be satisfied with speeds in that range, even if they were sporadic. what i'm getting is .2 mbps down .03 mbps up (or less) consistently. just got .03 down, .11 down and .18 down, on my last three tests.
I am constantly getting 300-400kbps down and 50-150kbps up.
Tried ##786# and performed a data profile reset. Fixed it got great speeds now.

Slow 3G? Try this...

-I posted this in the Synergy thread, but thought it may help other folks...
After flashing to a 2.3.4 ROM, my 3G speeds completely took a nose dive. I tried flashing different radio combos, updating my PRL, reseting my data profile & updating everything all over again to no avail. I stuck with the latest radios, ruling them out as the problem. I tried flashing different ROMs, and I had the same 1x speeds. After poking around a little bit, I changed my EvDO preferred mode and it helped instantly:
1. In dialer, hit ##3282#
2. Edit mode
3. Enter MSL (if you have root, download MSL Reader from the market to get your MSL number
4. EVDO
5. Preferred Mode
6. Change to from CDMA only to Automatic
7. Hit Menu
8. commit changes
9. reboot
10. *hopefully* get better speeds - I went from 130kbs to 800kbs
I was stuck at 1x at one point and this fixed helped me get 3G back. However my 3G speeds are still garbage, I blame Sprint for that.
If you are having very low 3G speeds though flash a ROM or theme that will allow you to see if your phone is on 1x/3G. If you are stuck on 1x like I was this will definitely fix that.
Hmm. On viper ROM 1.3 its already set to automatic
sent from my DAMN EVO!!!
THANK YOU!!!!
Using the speedtest app (I know it's not perfectly accurate), I got the same thing you did: 130kbs on back-to-back tests. I changed it to "automatic", and hit an average of 1,200 kps!
I ##3282#'d again and put it back to "CDMA only" and I got 130 kbs again. So I changed it back to "automatic" and I hit 1,290 kps (peak was 1,400 kps the first time I did it). All test runs were done within minutes of each other, with the phone laying in the same spot.
MAJOR improvement for me!
Note to anyone trying this: After committing the modifications, my phone would say it was going to reboot but it never did. I had to reboot it manually after committing every change. After you commit the modifications, make sure the phone reboots to ensure the change takes effect. I'll try this tomorrow from work during peak hours where I've always had poor data speeds and see if it improves my data speeds then and there, too.
Thanks again, nol3n!

This may only apply to 2.3.4 ROMs. I think it may be the default setting on the latest update.

You know how people say to go change your proxy settings to 0.0.0.0? Well I've completed removed that and that has helped my browsing A LOT.
The EVO shift had this problem when it got 2.3.3. I think the 2.3.4 roms for the EVO 3d are having same affect. The stock ROM its based off is set to CDMA only or 1xrtt.
Sent from my EVO3D(overclocked) via XDA App
Funny,
We had the same issue on the Verizon Thunderbolt -- and had to reset a similar option to get 3G speeds back (phone stuck on 1x)
Note, some roms may say 3G, or have the 3G icon, but be getting slow as molasses speed.
CleanRom clearly shows the icons (1x vs 3G)
Changing from CDMA to Automatic fixed everything for me.
Thanks for posting this.
The default is automatic. If your phone is/was set to CDMA only, then it was hosed up for some reason. I had this happen once after a Sprint rep had me do a reset on all of the data settings. Not sure why it borked it.
You can tell if the phone is in 1x using one of the signal apps that show db readings. If you're on 1x, the EVDO signal strength will be -120db all the time.
I did this last week when I was having problems with my 3g and figured it out. Definitely helped me.

I tried it here at work, and I got improved speeds, as well; although not as significant as I did at home. However, considering I'm in downtown Miami during peak hours where 100,000 people around me have a Sprint phone pulling from the local tower and I'm inside a building on the 38th floor, the improvement is still pretty damn good:
CMDA only = 90 kbs (average of two tests)
Automatic = 480 kbs (average of two tests)
That's over 5 times faster, so I'm happy with the results. My phone seems to roam less while I'm at work, too.
also, if you go to advanced then RTSP/HTTP and change ports to 0 and servers to 0.0.0.0 you will get faster service as well. (4g and 3g) just goes direct instead of a proxy

Yea, I remembered this from my OG Evo and did it to this phone as soon as I got it, but I noticed no change at all. This, however, was night & day for me. I saw someone mention that the default setting is automatic, but I really can't say if my phone came with automatic as default and then it changed after flashing something or not because I never checked it before last night.
Weird, mine was already set to automatic. But i removed the 0.0.0.0 and blanked it out.
Rebooting now.

Really poor 3g speeds and no 4g at my house. Got it better!

Going to Sprints website and looking at the coverage map it shows I should have 4g but don't. My signal is between -87dbm to -93dbm which is weak! Now if I drive 20 miles I have 4g and amazing speeds of 4-8mps. At the house I was lucky to get 200kbps.
After reading about editing the build.prop I played around with the flowctrl starting at 1 running test and repeating changing the value up to 7.
After several tests setting my phone to 3 gives the best results. Now getting over 1100kbps down and 700+kbps up.
This might be common knowledge but I just played around with it thinking it wouldn't make much difference but it does! So if you have poor 3g speeds try changing your build.prop setting.
"persist.ril.uart.flowctrl=1" This is what you look for. Change it and see what kind of results you get. Believe only 1 through 7 can be used.

-87 dbm is the best I get. Usually I'm at -96+. From what I've read that is a pretty weak signal.
To modify my build.prop I used root explorer. Made a backup then started messing with the numbers. 3 ended up boosted me from under 200kbps to over 1100kbps. I tested this throughout the day to make sure it wasn't tower load. When on default 1 would never get over 200kbps. On 3 lowest was 900kbps. Ill keep testing though, remember you have to try 1 through 7 until you find what works best for you. Searching I found quite a bit of people who improved 3g speeds doing this. There is even a market app that does basically the same thing.

CDMA HDR Only setting giving me best, consistent speeds

Going to ##DATA#, and editing the EVDO profile to CDMA HDR Only, I find, gives me the best speeds. The default is CDMA LTE HDR Only. It pains me that LTE is still yet not available in the PDX, but it's what we have to live with for now. In this setting I'm averaging above 1.5mbps and my upload speed is always lower than my down, which is comforting haha

I second this post. I believe that with the integration of this phone more peoplewho had access to 4G and used it day to day is now in the same bus as everyone else is using 3G, hence the congestion.
We will all be floating around sharing the same spectrum till LTE starts making it's debuts in cities all around.

At night I can get nice speeds with little service. But even during the day mine are as follows
~4 pm I get 1.6 dl and 1.03 up.
~2 am I get 3.1 dl and 1.68 up

Always sucks nuts for me.
I have found this one spot to park on my lunch that I think connects me to a different tower and I actually get like 480k - but it drops as soon as I move.
This is the saddest post I have ever made on XDA.

I'm getting similar speeds to you. Half the time dropping service altogether. Ugh.
I'd like to give this a try - but am being asked for a password to access these settings. Is there a stock password I should know? thanks!

Every phones password is different.
If you are rooted, you can use an MSL reader from the market.
If not, call sprint ask for your MSL code and (assuming you don't get a douche bag agent) they will give it to you.
was the default somthing else?? cause mine was already on cdma HDR..

download connect bot from market
click on ssh and chose local. click enter.
type getprop ril.MSL (case sensitive)
download the app msl reader.. that will give u your password
Tried it but saw no appreciable difference in data speed. Appreciate the suggestion, however.

I tried it and got improvement. Previously on CDMA HDR LTE I did a speed test and had D: 1128 U: 543. When changed to CDMA HDR I now get D: 1646 U: 841. It was connected to the same server for the test and in the exact same spot.
Quick heads up/fyi:
Going to settings/mobile networks/network mode then changing to "CDMA Only" is quicker/the same as doing the ##data## bit..that's kind of the long way 'round (specially if you're not rooted or don't have your MSL)
That's what I get if I'm LUCKY at my house -_-

Question. I switched it over to CDMA only under mobile networks and since I did the 3G up and down bars are constantly lit up. I restarted the phone twice and wont stop. The only way to stop it is turn off mobile network and if I turn it back on its the same story. Anyone else experience this?

how long did it happen? I found that if you let it sit for about 3 or 4 so minutes it'll finally straighten out

Yes it straightened out but it was more like 10 mins. Do you have to do the ##data# trick to get it on CDMA only or will just changing the mobile network setting do the trick? I've read on Sprint.com that if you do this you will save battery life if your not in a LTE area.
