Hi hope someone can help.
I've bought an Xperian X10 mini for my daughter. She loves it. All her friends love it. The iPhone owners want one! (Big) but.....
She is not a heavy user, and so put her on a PAYG contract. However it is running out of credit very quickly, and when I checked the usage it is nothing she is doing, but some background app that is regularly (hourly) connecting with GPRS and doing... well something, but I have no idea what :-S The info on the usage (from Orange) is (e.g.)
date & time event type dialled number/description duration/vol(Kb) cost (?)
22/05/11 19:22 GPRS ap-prepaidsessio 38.0 0.00
with the same entry every hour:22
We have tried disabling as many sync type options / apps as we can find (e.g. Timescape) but it is still happening, and is driving me up the wall.
The reason I am even more annoyed is that most of the time it is at home, and connected (apparently successfully) to our wifi, so why the hell is it using GPRS anyway when there is an active wifi conection?! :-S
I have tried everything I can think of, and short of turning it off there seems little I can do. Can anyone help please??
- Which app is doing this?
- How do I configure it to either
i) use Wifi (preferred - would rather not disable functionality if possible) or
ii) stop auto syncing every hour?
Any help very gratefully received!
Thanks in advance
T
There are a couple of apps out there that can monitor data usage per app. But so far, all those that I found require Froyo (2.2) and above. I'm guessing your using the stock SE ROM so that's 2.1.
But there is an alternative.
Dial *#*#4636#*#*
Click Usage Statistics
Click Battery history
Click the Other usage dropdown
Click network usage
That should show you which apps are using your network connection. But both wifi and 3g; at least it gives you an idea.
As to how to prevent use, you could go to each app and customize syncing options if at all possible. If you just want to block an app from using the network totally, I suggest LBE Privacy Guard, free on the market.

They have a thread here on XDA: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1091065
EDIT: BTW, the phone shouldn't be using GPRS when wifi is available. That's weird. First time I've heard of that happening.
Many thanks for the info - really useful - will check the links you've given.
On the wifi (and yes it is weird - and annoying!) could it be "connected" but without a "proper" connection? Is there some way I can check, e.g. switch off GPRS and see if can see www?
Just tried what you suggested (disconnected the internet from my wifi router, but router still on), and my X10MP didn't even attempt to connect to GPRS despite using apps which use data. The apps returned errors.
Maybe your X10M fails to connect to the wifi? I actually have no idea what's going on.
you and me both buddy!
thanks for trying tho!
I'll delete the connection anyway and try set it up again....
"no batterry usage data available"
do I need to enable something to collect it?

I didn't need to enable anything to use that. Sorry, don't know how else to help.
well it carried on despite various fiddling. so I did a factory reset.... no accounts set up no sync etc - factory reset - and it's still happening??!! so something SE/Android is doing it, but I still have no idea what? Surely I'm not the only person with this issue??!! :S :S :S

very simple fix, go to Settings > Wireless & Networks > Mobile Networks > uncheck Data enabled.
that way mobile data (gprs,edge,3g) is turned off and your problem is solved. If you're using stock SE software, theres a Data Traffic widget that lets you toggle the Data Enabled setting on and off easily.
Sync is not the only thing using data traffic, background apps can too, as well as some of the apps she might be using. ( some apps have adverts )
Thanks. Had also been nosing on SE site, and am obviously not the only person with this problem. I unchecked the box a few hours ago, am hoping that that cures it. I've also found anotehr PAYG plan with the same provider that has unlimited internet, so may switch to that. So one way or another will be resolved.
However I am still left annoyed. This ****** device is supposed to be under MY contorl not the other way round! Not knowing what is doing this, or (and because of this) not being able to stop it is ****** annoying! As is the fact it (whatever "it" or "they" are) is using GPRS when there is an open wifi connection!!
Ho hum - progress eh...
Well turning off the Data seems to have done the trick thanks. NOt really satisfactory not knowing what is doing it, but there we go. Thanks for all the help all
If shes not using the data at all, you can try to delete all access points - GPRS,WAP, etc. even MMS...with no APN, no connection, no access to net, no credit loss...Just go to settings-wireless networks-mobile networks-access point names-click on any of them-press menu button and choose delete...Im working for the operator so I solve this kind of problems every day :-D It is easy if you dont want to use net in mobile at all but still I think you should flash it with SEUS because your problem is weird.
That's the thing - she does use data. so want it to be enabled. but the vast majority of the time is at home with a perfectly good wifi connection, so why won't it use that?!
Anyway am swapping to a PAYG tarriff promising "free" internet, so will see how that goes.
thanks t
Hi guys,
I'm in need of a little bit of help: I've purchased a P500 to use at home as a dedicated 3g->wifi router since i have an unlimited data plan.
However, the ROMs are not quite to the point where it never crashes, and the hotspot needs manual activation upon boot.
Does anyone know what I have to type in order to script something to start it after a reboot? Or some kind of program that would do it for me?
many thanks!
dont you think its a waste? an lg p500 for a router!
i do not think that theres any such script? its rare we get similar needs to yours O: you'll just have to leave your phone in the charger for now...

Get a Rom/Kernel that doesnt Crash.
EG CM7.2 RC1 / roq-x kernel or ta-kernel 1.2
U can probably use Tasker and Bootlog Uptime. Set a profile with Tasker to automatically start tethering when Bootlog Uptime starts. So if the phone crushes, after reboot Bootlog Uptime starts automatically and triggers the task to open tethering. Did not try it out but it could work. Or maybe you can figure out other profile that hepls you, based on other contexts.
Hi,
wondered if anyone had any ideas on this after im running out.
ive had my xperia s a while and love it, the only problem is i only get 500mb internet on my contract.
i usually check facebook and the news say once or twice a day on my phone while im at work, the rest of the time my data is turned off and i dont use it or i use the wifi
however i still manage to use 500mb of data in about 2 weeks.
ive turned off anything i can think off that could use this data in the background.
i was wondering if anyone had a list of stuff that i could of missed or everything you should proberly turn off to stop this from happening !?
thanks in advance
You running ICS? If yes, theres a little bug, Android OS eats really that much data you can't believe.
But maybe you just didnt enable WiFi and Mobile Data splitting in the Data Usage Monitor?
You can see data usage by app (below the graph), what do you see there?
Hi, some months ago, I put Cyanogenmod 10.1 on my Galaxy Ace. It wasn´t very fast, but caused no problems and was usable. This morning, I woke up only to find out that my phone used lots of data overnight. I got a text from my carrier saying I'm 2,5 gigs = 100 euro's past my limit. The Android data usage menu states that the Google Play store used 2.23 GB, but auto updating via mobile network is disabled and I only have 7 apps installed.
I know that I can't undo the usage, but I'd like to know what may have caused this excessive data usage.

Does anyone know a reasonable explanation for this?

Yoyr apps might have additional data that needs to be downloaded. Plus google play is a fickle app. It can disobey your commands. I would advise you to turn off your data when not using it. It'll save you battery

Hello everybody. Im new to this site and i know that there are people here who are very talented and i would like to thank them for their help that they provide. This site have helped me a great deal even though i just browse it.
Short version:
So, my service provider have this data plan for me which consists of 2 parts:
1- 2 GB during the month (except the duration of the second part).
2- 1 GB everyday and it is provided from 12:00 am to 6:00 am
So, if the time is anything but the second duration, my service provider will monitor my 2 GB consumption. And i believe the description for the second part of the plan is clear.
I would love it if there was an app that can monitors this data plan and can put caps on it and update accordingly on a daily basis. Is there such an app?
Thanks in advance.
TLR version:
Now, i like to download big files sometimes and to automate the process i used an app called automate it and it helped me in setting logical operators for the time interval of the second part and controls switching on/off my data connection and wifi but my current setup relies on me updating the data usage app of the system on a daily basis which is cumbersome. What happens is ill give my device the 1 gb allowance\cap on a daily basis. It will reach it during the 12-6 am interval. The system will turn the data connection off. Automate it will realize that and turn on the wifi connection to continue downloading. All of this while im a sleep which is awesome but i have to update the 1 gb allowance on a daily basis which is combursome and i would love it if there was an app that can put 2 data caps on my internet usage as based on the description of my data plan.
Thanks in advance.
