Which Rom? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Soo there are a lot of Roms... I tried looking on XDA forums and such about Roms but all I'm getting is stuff like
-deoxed
-zipaligned.. statements. I don't know what is new in the Roms too much. I have a samsung Galaxy S2. Could someone please explain what the most popular roms up to date feature?
Also I was looking at flashing the Cyangenmod 7 rom or miui... any opinions on them? Or are there other awesome Roms I should know about? What I am currently looking for in a rom is customization as in themes and improved battery life... it doesn't matter if I can't get those 2 in one rom but it would be nice. I paticularly want customization more though. Last but not least, the most stable one for daily use.

Cm7 and miui and two totally different roms, more different than the stock one you have on your phone now, its best to give them both a try and see which one you like. Cm7 is a pure android rom with none of samsung bloatware/features on it, miui is a iphone'ish looking rom based on cm7 with lots of theme'ing ability.
For battery life i would say the kernel and modem are the key, again you have to try a couple of each and see what works for you.

Im running KJ4 (latest orange UK) stock, cf-rooted to remove all orange crap. I flashed speedmod and siyahs kernels but didn't notice any battery improvement so went back to cf. As for customization i use go launcher and change themes every so often

kernel and mod? my kernel is 2.6.35.7-I9100JPKG2-CL342890 [email protected] #2 and as for modem... im not sure. Anyways... where would these modems and kernels be for flashing... and can I still flash a rom WITH it? I tried reading for a few days.. I really wanna figure this stuff out.

ok so i found the roms im interested in. cognition, batista, criskelo, Androidmeda-HyperDroid, miui and cyangenmod7. which one should I pick and why.

First you need to flash a cf-root kernel to get cwm, find a kg2 kernel here, think i used the jp_xsg_kg2 on my phone for the first time.
You can find modem's here, out of the ki modems ki1 and ki3 seems to be giving me better battery life than ki4.

The first 4 roms are based on samsungs roms, can't go wrong with any of them so just pick one that has a theme that you like.
Miui and cm7 on the other hand are completely different, so try them both as they differ greatly.

I like what I use, CriskeloROM, I absolutely recommend this ROM to anyone, rock solid, very fast, very customizable and also many functions added (mod camera.apk with audio hack/volUp,volDown keys snapshot, call recording, etc). I tried many other ROMs, but now I recommend CriskeloROM. One more thing, if you're a guy that always want to be running the latest firmare, Criskelo updates the ROM each time the new one gets released, which is fantastic! try it, you won't regret it!
BTW, downside of CM7/Miui, they lose the Touchwiz interface, such as the Samsung built-in apps, and also you lose the cool Samsung gestures in the internet browser and gallery to zoom in and out.

Thanks... I hate the Touchwiz interface though. Um one question, when I put the rom onto my phone (dragging it from my computer and dropping it onto my phones memory... does it go in the EXTERNAL SD CARD, or the INTERNAL STORAGE spare? Thanks a lot

normally when I plug in my phone to the computer (USB debugging), I get to drives that plug into the my computer. The internal one is around 11gb, and your external one is (insert your capacity here). The internal SD card should come with folders like Android, Attachments, bluetooth, clockworkmod, etc....

so i put rom in internal sd card?

yes

[Q] Which is the best Custom ROM?

I'm only a month old Androidian... and within a month I leant a lot frm XDA about installing custom rom/rooting and using new themes etc...
But I am really lost at one point ... which custom Rom is the best one and is flawless... i mean some times im really confused bet the top ROM maker's ... I knw that everybdy's workin hard to make a best out of it....
but I would really like 2 knw who's using which custom ROM tht's been used by maximum number of users and whch seen flawless (at least fast and 90% flawless)
Everyone has different tastes, so you should try a few roms to choose the one that you think it's better.
You must keep in mind that no rom is 100% perfect and there are always little flaws. When I install a custom rom, I always do a few tweaks here and there and add or remove that I like or dislike.
I've tried Exynos, Cognition, Villain, SkyRom and Lite'ning. To my taste, Villain and Lite'ning are the best, with Exynos in second place. FYI, Now I'm on Villain 2.1 with Ninphetamine 2.0 Kernel and KG2 modem, just to try something different to Lite'ning 3.1.
I'm eagerly waiting for MIUI and Cyanogen to become stable, but in the meantime I'm switching between the aforementioned roms.
I feel that Cyanogen is one of the most stable roms out there, even though they're nightlies. No sudden reboot, excellent batterylife, not to mention the huge amount of tweaks and settings built in..

For now I am staying (and thus voting) "original stock ROM".
This will very likely change once CM7 is finished for the SGS2
But its still early days of i9100 and every now n thn a new official stock rom is release or I must say "leaked" (thanks 2 samfirmware) .....
n it really sux whn after installing latest cf-root n custom rom , theme and backup restoration setting Home widgets your own way everthing ... which sometime takes many days to settle.
... and after doing all that @SamFirmware tweets that a new I9100 firmware is leaked... and then forgetting all the hardwrk we did to make i9100 stylish n fast, we start refreshing XDA forum to see whether smbdy has released a custom rom or not ?
n the Impatient ones takes backups via titanium and wipes everything and get back to Stock Rom to see the diff (deliberately ignoring the fact tht titanium restore will work only after rooting) ...
Its really a fact... tht happen with most of the ppl...
After trying various Roms in last few months... I stay with either Villain ROM OR Official ROM (CF Rooted ) .... hope that if some day it could be dual booted like my PC is.
I stick with the official ROM and customize it to my own needs.
I love MIUI as I love to heavily customise look and feel with ease.

CM7 it runs really great for me with no issues. I am hoping to get my Dual boot working soon to boot then i will be set.
I love batista 70. For me the best.
I think Leomar v2.6 is the best because of the personalization you can do and it's very very very easy to do!!

i agree with you
Cyanogenmod definitely. I never was one to enjoy being tied down to OEM software which were uncompatible with each other.
If you want a custom custom rom check out Insanity II... quick, stripped down, bare bones, no non-sense. Since you only run essentials it ups your battery life by quite a bit.
On Sammy ROMs Cognition and Darky are very stable and have decent battery life.
CM7 is highly customizable but you miss certain features like A2DP, FM radio, better camera , hi def videos that are part of Samsung ROMs. Some of these features are being worked upon and would be available whenever the stable version comes out.
Some people have better battery life on CM7. strangely it is not the case with me.
MIUI is cute but a big battery drain.
overall there is no best ROM or anything . you try different ROMs and use the one that suits your needs.
I'm using leomar 2.6 with nimpho 2.1.3 and it goes very smooth.. Battery goes for 2days (ofc that depends..) and in general works for me. Plus you can customize it and make it as you like through his kitchen with mods, themes etc.

My Vote is definitely for VillainRom 2.4.2 and kernel 2.0.5 woked best for me... smooth, minimalistic and no bugs... cheers
I am also on villainrom 3.0 but with ninph 2.1.3 .... my battery is draining very fast... any second best ppl can suggest?

Agreed. I used CM7 for about 2 days before i switched back to (the vampiric) stock. It had great battery life for me but i do use bluetotth and FM radio on a daily basis.

Best Rom Galaxy S II ???

I get my S II tomorrow and I've been looking around alot to see what the best rom out is, but there's loads of roms available.
What I'm asking is instead of spending multiple hours going through every rom to find out whats good, whats peoples favorites or what would you recommend,
Stuff I need working -
Camera
Onboard Storage
GPS
(These are musts)
I would preferably like things like overclocking stuff that utilizes the dual core 1.2ghz processor.
Any ideas and thanks in advance
With multiple exact same posts as yours .
One their is no bests rom .
Two read the individual rom threads and make up your own mind.
Three if unable to make up your mind stick with stock .
Four posts belongs Q&A

Camera
Onboard Storage
GPS
You should find they come with the phone not the rom .

Firstly sorry for not noticing the many other posts dedicated to this subject.
Secondary, camera etc may come with the phone but it doesn't specifically come with the rom, I have a Xperia Arc at the moment and the freexperia project doesnt have the camera up and running, so I feel like that was a valid question.
All I was asking is what people are using? What you prefer?
Not an index to what you hate and love about every rom

Coming from HTC Desire, I would of asked exactly the same questions. When new ROMS came out on HTC Desire, or the X10, not everything was working right from the start. Even on the ROMS on this phone it seems not everything is working, so surely the question is valid.
most are just themed roms and don't offer much over a rooted and tweaked stock rom.

The most famous roms have all the features your looking for i believe, Better Camera, overclock 1.6 Ghz, Better GPS etc.
But you can't say which one is best cause they all are different in their own way, specially in themes and so on.

@JJEgan, you were right in the other thread... this is getting ridiculous
@OP: there's really not much difference between them. The different ones are probably CM7, MIUI and Oxygen (they're not stable), the rest just have some modifications, and they mostly are stable with everything working. Just see which one has more views and pick one you think you like. Creating a thread like this has absolutely no point, you will get zero information out of it... even if people start answering you, you'll just get a random sample of what some people are using.
Stock
Just root it and add a kernel like niphetamine - get juicedefender too.
Simples.

Villain Rom 2.4.2 best for me. It's based on stock firmware so gps, camera etc is working fine. Browser is laggy though so use Dolphin HD or another one from the market.
You get Villain tweaks too!
Flash the Ninphetamine kernel as its overclocked to 1.6ghz.
Sorted

I agree with some of the others in this thread, just stock is best. Samsung polished the firmware really well and its amazing. Id say just flash a custom kernel if you want to do extra stuff like oc/uv or something. Really the only time i ever switch from stock is to try CM7 then or something. Other than that imo stock is best.
GS2 is the first phone where stock meet all my needs. Ive played with a couple of different roms and usually something happens after the first week.
Most roms in dev section give you a all in one package. So must of the tweaks that you would normally install manually are already preinstalled. This is the fun part about android with so many choices, try a couple out first and see what fits your needs.
This is a valid question, the more popular the phone the more hours of searching it takes. CM7 is buggy as hell. Stay away. Stick with stock and just flash a kernel. Samsung did a good job actually with this phone, especially with the skinning in my opinion. It amazes me people buy a super specd phone like this the install ROMS that strip the phone of it's power. CM7 is taking way too long honestly and it's absurd how buggy it is at this point in the phones release history.

Just a little rectification for OP and others: CM7 is an unstable nightly build officially, but it's usable. I have it for a week now, and I haven't had any serious problems. It's stable and I can use it just like the stock ROM, with very few limitations. I'm not going back to other roms for now
Leomar's revolution is amazing. Lots of customised stuff.
VillainROM for a stock look which allows for easily added tweaks. Friendly thread as well.
Ninphetamine kernel works great with both roms...
I atlculay lvoe my sumnasg glxaay s2 wtih VliaRionlm mroe tahn my xobx
I am using Lite'ning 6.1 with speedmod kernel T32 but it has not BLN so I will change kernel.
For me, the rom is perfect but anyway I have not tried more (in GT-i9000 I tried too much)
Cyanogenmod ofcourse
I dont have a rooted SGS2 but Cyanogenmod is on the vids very good and smooth.
There are a few issues but there are not major bugs.
Only A2DP dont work ... And a few another things !

Most stable ROM for newbie?

Hey,
Just got this phone, and I rooted and unlocked it.
Now want to install the most stable rom there is, for example on Samsung Vibrant the stable ROM was Bionix......
Is there something like that for SGS2?
By stable, I mean everything work just like stock....
Thanks.

They all pretty much work like stock(except cm7/miui), they just differ by themes and kernels, try a couple of them because everyone is going to recommend different ones.
This is the first phone ive had that didnt need a custom rom. Big ups to Samsung for doing what others cant do. Theres only 2 custom roms CM and MIUI and the rest have tacky themes throughout them. Just like the poster above, grab a stock rom, root it, remove any apps you dont want.
Just stay away from experimental builds and betas, and you should be fine.

Great advice. I am on 2.3.3 now KG2, whats the stable latest stock rom out there (preferable deoxed as i do not want useless apps)? As I heard some of the latest stock rom do not perform well.....?
For a newbie, I would advise to just stay with the stock rom. This phone is already a beast in its stock form and you don't really gain alot from all the custom ROMs and kernels, unlike the SGS1.
can I install Villianrom? is that stock rom with just useless stuff removed?
I don't think deodexed is gonna give any better performance. I'm thinking the other way around.
Anyway I recommend stock KI3 or above and root using cfroot from chainfire.
Then use titanium backup to freeze any bloatware. There are lists around. Just posted one myself. Too long to do again.
Use jkay mods for odexed roms from theme section. Great stuff.
3rd party (market) apps like Launchers, sms, dialers, contacts, etc etc etc can be themed to change look and feel.
Have fun.

AFAIK, VillainROM is basically rooted stock + (standard) Ninphetamine 2.0.5 kernel + VRTweaks, which gives you the option to modify a number of things. I've been using it since version 3.0, and very happy with it.
Why not use the stock ROM then? You have one condition for your pick: you want the most stable ROM. Use the stock Samsung ROM. But then you add "by stable you mean everything works like stock" ... but not stock? What? What do you want?
Usually they want better battery life, and maybe some optimization and tweaks. Any more would fry a noobs brain.
Start talking about kernels and they'll wonder why you're introducing corn into the conversation.

try the hyperdroid
there are ONLY two things i like about custom roms
1. they removed the google voice thing
when double clicking the home button it starts an app
the thing is there is a home lag with that process
its removed in most custom roms (villain roms have something called VRtweaks) really nice stuff
2.increased sensitivity
no idea why samsung implemented this
custom roms that have this feature are snappier
currently running Ki8 with speedmod
i used Cognition 1.6 and have always used it before + black android (amazing)
only reason i switched is because he removed RTL support
using stock Ki8 with speedmod

[Q] Review of ICS Roms that work on SG2?

Hi I have a rooted SG2 and have been trying to brush up on my knowledge of available roms for the sg2 but it is of course a bit arduous doing multiple searches reviewing opinions etc etc and was wondering if there is a wiki or something that does a comparison of the ICS roms that are available?
I of course hear the most about cyanogenmod9 but after reading about some stability issues with v7 and coming to the conclusion that it seems to be more of an “every persons rom” rather than specialized I wanted to see what else was out there (recommendations for lite/uber-stable roms are appreciated).
Cheers,
-Gaiko
If you're looking for an 'uber-stable rom', I would recommend waiting before flashing current ICS builds...while they are quite usable, they still have many bugs and functions not working correctly...I would wait a few weeks and by February or so I reckon we'll have some pretty stable builds...

I would suggest you do your own research in future, its all there, in more than one post, almost identical to this but worded slightly differently.
Even googerling ICS SGS2 stable XDA would have shown you that there all alpha or pre alpha builds at the moment.
rom XXLPD custom for SG2
I tried Remix 8.5 based on XXLP6and 8.6 based on XXLPB
LPB is in very good progress versus LP6
3 remarks
the security settings don't function totally ( send SMS, and others functions ) , and like phone locator pro switch off the phone when using it
when screnn off, it is necessary to reboot
I think that in V8.6 CF root LP6 replaces LPB for allowing the apps on SD
but radio FM disappears . with LP6, radio FM is good
quick panel lidroid is very good but I prefer JKAY settings
(with many possibilities )
so I wait a new version of ICS rom for leaving 2.3.6 version
Br46
criskelo rom V38 with siyah 2.6.11
i like criskelo works
Hi Gaiko,
Indeed, ICS still is in its beta phase.
I have tried Westcrips ICS Remix v8.2 (currently V8.6) and liked it a lot. However JKay doesn't support ICS yet.
I need the Phone options dialog to make screendumps, so I reverted back to CheckROM Revo v5 with Criskelo's Galaxy Blue theme, thereby "downgrading" the framework, but restoring JKay!
At http://www.galaxys2roms.com/ you can find an overview of SGS2 ROMS, both GB and ICS.
Remember, whatever you do, always make a good backup before flashing a new ROM. Usufull programs are Apkmanager, App Backup and Restore, Easy Backup (doesnt support ICS yet), SMS Backup and Restore, and Titanium Backup.
Kind regards,
Skully☺

I tried Wanamlite ICS & Spike PureICS roms and I must say:
both are very good roms, BUT, in my experience, 'wanamlite' seemed to crash a lot and seemed to me a bit to bloated for my taste, I love PureICS 5.0, It works flawlessly, no bloatware, and only 200MB, i'd def give that a shot and go on from there.
good
i try some ICS custom rom(SGS2) . actualy not bad .
My 2c..
Well, seeing that this thread still comes first in 'searching for stable roms', here i go with my somewhat limited experience
my first custom ics rom was Bezke coming directly from stock.
Looked good, many interesting samsung apps i was used to. however, no matter what i tried the phone, messaging and other ssytem apps would keep FC. Mostly the phone app. It might be worth rechecking it again, though.
than i went with Sensation ROM, i guess 4.0.3. there i had real problems making it work. at some point, after installing a secondary app (i guess lockscreen) the phone kept rebooting over and over again. Even before that update, with just the bare os the phone was highly unstable, no network..
Finally, i am happy with ressurection by westcrip. I just upgraded yesterday after having used his 4.0.1 version for almost a month with (almost) no problem. Well, it seems that i lost the toggles but hopefully i will find a fix for that.
hope it helps. hope some other users share their experience on the quest to find a stable rom.
OP is based on unreleased beta test roms so not relevant to Samsung released ICS .

I've been using Foxhound (now using PsychoMantis v2) with SpeedMod kernel and it's very stable. No issues, good battery life.
After I bought my GSII I skipped to ICS the second I got home.. I tried the stock one and it was ok, I guess..
Then I tried Lite'ning Rom v2.0 and was pleased.. and continued to update the until 2.6 and then it became to obsolete and buggy
Now I run Dynamic 1.4 (started from 1.0) and I can say I'm very pleased. With normal use (not heavy) I ended up in 3 day and 20% left of the battery, and I didn't have any bugs, all I need and use works.
The last ROM is base without any Samsung app, and without many of the Google apps (remained only the ones that make it work)
If it helped use that Thank Button

IMO Sense sucks ass and whenever you switch to an AOSP based rom you will never want to go back to sense. I've been using the latestet builds of the ICS rom which works...kinda but you may want to stay away from it if you are not to fimarlier with flashing roms and such.
I would install this ROM if I were you: http://rootzwiki.com/topic/13354-cust-thundershed-v16-cm72-ics-ish-june-4/
I ran that rom for months and loved it, much faster then stock, more features and better battery life when used with IMO's leans kernal found here: http://rootzwiki.com/topic/1258-kernel-aosp-leankernel-minimalistic-kernel-v621-52012/
I'd say something BAMF. SkyRaider maybe. I personally love Sense. I love the widgets, mainly the picture album widget.

IMO Sense sucks ass and whenever you switch to an AOSP based rom you will never want to go back to sense. I've been using the latestet builds of the ICS rom which works...kinda but you may want to stay away from it if you are not to fimarlier with flashing roms and such.

I'd agree with the skyraider suggestion if you are new to this and want to stay close to what you have now. Use that and once setup make a backup, then you cam experiment with others til you find what you like and you'll always have the backup to restore if you don't like what you are trying out. I'd definitely give worksheds cm build a run as well to check out the aosp side and decide if its for you. He is an excellent dev and I personally have had the privilege to use his work when he first started and he played a big part in getting me started as well. You can't go wrong with either of those builds.

I agree with the recommendations. Of the Sense based ROMs SkyRaider and Son of a Bliss (SOAB) are the best. The best AOSP ROMs are ThunderShed (what this poster refers to as "WorkShed's CM build") and SFK's CM7 build (it is based on ThunderShed). I have tried the newer ROMs based on the ICS leak and while it is cool to think you are getting ICS on your phone the kernels are not ICS and so there are small issues that seem to pop up. Santod's NuSense is perhaps the most stable and best looking of these if you want to investigate.
Most people find that every phone is different and what works best on my phone isn't necessarily what works best on yours. Add to that, different kernels and radios work better on individual phones. So while starting with a recommended combination (eg, ThunderShed, using Zoom kernel and .9 radio works well on my phone), you may find a different combination works best of yours. So prepare to try out different ROMs, with different kernels, and different radios. Part of the fun, in fact, is trying them out. Good luck.

I agree! I'm trying to decide what features I like most. It's good to try different ROMs to see just that.

if you want to go the cyanogenmod route, use CM7.1.1 unofficial for the thunderbolt. its lying around this forum somewhere, CM7 uses android open source (AOSP for short) and it installs with only 88+MB of data, leaving LOTS of room. talk to me about how to majorly speed up the phone as i have and you will not regret it. i have used cm7.1, plus other tweaks involving sd-ext and cache boosts to speed up this phone 300%.using sense roms is nice, but if you want speed long term, then dont use sense. it clogs the memory with extra visuals that just arent needed.
