How To Temp Root Rezound! - HTC Rezound

This will Achieve TEMP. Root.
I made this because I found it hard to find instructions.
I DID NOT MAKE THIS ROOT!
Download this Zergrush Root (mirror'd on my server) and extract somewhere where you can find:
http://www.guitarvideos.org/zerg.zip
1. Connect your phone to your computer via USB. Turn USB debugging on.
2. Download/install HTC drivers if they aren't already installed:
http://goo.gl/Rzauz
3. select HTC Sync When you plug your phone in. Charge Only may work for others, but HTC Sync is the only one that worked for me. Let windows install the drivers if needed.
4. Navigate inside the folder you extracted and right click on ZergRushTempRoot (.bat), and click Run as administrator. Then follow directions.

So if it's temporary root then what's the point of step 6?

Good point sir. Edited, and slapped firmly

Have you tried removing any bloat from /system?

you can temp root it and remove the bloatware, but it force re-dl's as soon as you reboot.
/sadface

I bet that can be blocked. There must be an app or service running that needs to be killed.

I am getting a 404 file not found error for the first link.

sorry should work now

Works now. Thanks

I tried it with the htc sync method and it doesnt work. Couldnt use any root apps anyway so I guess temp root is useless.

It worked for me, but only until it rebooted. Installed MyBackup Root and was able to restore. Once I rebooted, it was gone. Are there there any scripts to uninstall the bloat apps??

While you are rooted, could you check the sizes of /data and /system with a df command in mobile terminal?

Ok I followed the steps and it SEEMS to work, puts SU on the phone, but Titanium does not recognize it as having root....
EDIT: disregard... not sure what I did but it's working now...

were you able to restore your apps/settings and have it all remain after reboot?

well, titanium restore is definitely working. got a bunch of stuff restored no problem. I haven't tried rebooting after restoring but I know SU dissappeared the couple times I rebooted before restoring.

I'm going to talk to a few guys today over in the 3VO forums. I'm sure we can get a script for the bloat. Maybe even for th kernel. No promises but can't hurt

[FIX] Titanium Backup not working after S-OFF/Root

After obtaining S-OFF and permanent root, I was still having trouble getting Titanium Backup to work.
Here's what I had to do to fix it:
I had used this to obtain temp root in the past: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1151735
Those steps had me create this directory: /data/bin/
Within that directory, I had sqlite, su, etc. so I simply deleted all the files in that folder, rebooted, and Titanium Backup now works!
I hope it helps everyone else.
I believe that all u need was to reinstall busybox. Which you can download in the market.

Busybox dl didn't work. What's happened is one of the temp root methods put the files in a place that TB could find and they're no longer "registered" in that location. Deleting out the junk fixes the patch issues and helps most folks.
Download busybox from inside TB by pressing problems. It should fix after that.

Correctimundo.
I have had troubles running the script provided even the v7 that is posted now i have re-written the instructions and will compile an app later that can be run on windows to make sure the paths are all ok. Creating the local.prop file and not getting into the shell first was acting up on my XP box. I have a party to head out to but once I get back I will get the app written and tested again. Also I cannot take screens with drocap on the X2, I think it's a Tegra issue can anyone confirm or know of a screen shot app that works on Tegras
Just used AndroSS but it works without root on the X2 but at least i can get some screens of the terminal and a few other places now.
I'm Not Sure I'm Following, There's A Script With The 1 Click Program?
Yes there is a .bat file but running that did not work so I compared the steps and was looking over the command set and it was not properly sending the shell commands on my workstation. It may have been an issue with custom paths I run at the office. Could have been a windows version issue as well. If its written in vb.net I can call a vbscript to use send keys which will prevent that.

{For All Xperia} Online Nandroid Backup / Nandroid Backup without re-booting

Hey there guys I came across this useful tool today when I was poking around the ARC section it lets you make a nandroid without having to boot into recovery. This isnt my work Im simply passing it on so I hope he doesnt care too much about me posting this here.
***ALL crdeit goes to ameer1234567890***
Nandroid backups are usually performed in recovery mode. This means you would have to turn off your phone and reboot in recovery mode, which wastes a whole lot of time rebooting and a lot more time offline. For me, this has been a killer as I do regular nandroid backups. Having to reboot in recovery and finding missed calls, sms from my wife and friends is totally not accepatable for me. So, I set to develop an online nandroid backup tool which can do nandroid backups without switching off my phone.
Today, I am releasing it to public, as it may serve good for some others too. This tool is specifically for Xperia phones, but should work with any model of android phones.
This tool backups /system , /data , /cache & .android_secure partiotions to /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup directory. The date format used for folder name is the same used by CWM itself and nandroid backups created with this tool can safely be restored using CWM. If you would want to have a custom name for backup folder, pass an argument with the name to the script and it will use the name.
Feedback (especially ideas to improve) are most welcome.
Requirements
1. Rooted android phone
2. A terminal emulator installed on phone
3. Busybox
4. A working CWM based recovery installed
5. Some patience
Installation
1. Download and copy zip file to SD card
2. Reboot into recovery
3. Choose install zip from SD card, select zip and flash .
4. Reboot!
Usage
1. Open terminal emulator
2. Type su to obtain root
3. Type onandroid
4. Wait and watch

Isn't this inherently flawed since files on the rom are still being used and written while the backup is taking place? Neat idea though, don't get me wrong

I tried to do a restore from the online nandroid backup I made and even though it said "restore complete" my SD-ext(4) partition would not load its shortcuts and widgets. The funny part is link2sd didn't even detect any SD-ext as if it wasn't backed up. I thought it said that it backed up SD-ext during online backup, but not sure. I'm wondering if it might help to factory restore before restoring backup. I may try that to see and I'll report back if noone reports similar problem.
Edit**During backup I was not doing anything else with phone other then watching the amazing online backup screen. Also I tried to "re-create mount scripts" but never got option from link2sd even after reboot.

This tool (prior to v3) does not backup sd-ext partition. In the first post, you can see what the tool backups.
PS: If you can send me a previous backup of your sd-ext, I can work on adding sd-ext backup support to the script.

Well, I found one in creepyncrawly's signature but I'm hesitant to use it...

I'm not sure all hope is lost.
I think that I just have a limited understanding of the situation...
So I'm back to the stock ROM and the gallery app picks up the photos on my sd card. Not only that, but esfile explorer says that there is a /sdcard/external_sd/ path and allows me access to it. Plays music and all that stuff. Pretty cool, huh?
So at that point (last time and the time before that) I was tempted to root, which I did using zedomax/odin. All went fine, but that's when I lost access to the external card. Again.
Weird.

Just so I'm 100% sure I'm safe...
(I am rooted and thought I had already taken care of this, but obviously had not...)
I had an OTA notification waiting for me when I woke up this morning. I declined and it said something to the effect that it would automatically try again at 0100 (1 AM) and make sure my phone was charged and yada, yada, yada...
After that, I immediately renamed \system\app\sdm.apk to "SDM.bak" (I also renamed FWUpgrade.apk in the same manner as directed in another post I saw).
So...that's all I should have to do right? Is there a downloaded update hanging out somewhere that needs to be deleted as well? My phone won't attempt to install this later at 0100 tonight?

The actual OTA download will be located in /cache. Delete with root explorer.
The download goes into the Data/FOTA folder. Find that and remove all permissions. I cant take credit for that one because I read it from another user that confirmed it stopped the OTA.
1. Open Root Browser
2. Navigate to data/fota
3. Long Press and select Permissions
4. Uncheck all boxes making it 0000

The download goes into the Data/FOTA folder. Find that and remove all permissions. I cant take credit for that one because I read it from another user that confirmed it stopped the OTA.
1. Open Root Browser
2. Navigate to data/fota
3. Long Press and select Permissions
4. Uncheck all boxes making it 0000

Thanks!

would it be better just to delete the update? The file is about 327MB and that's unwanted space being used
How are you renaming sdm? I am using ES as root and it's not letting me.

I think the logic behind leaving the update file there, but with permissions removed is because that would effectively block the update from being re-downloaded again, or being run by the updater.
Granted, that point is probably moot if the correct updater apps are already frozen, but it's an extra layer of assurance.

I used Root explorer...be sure to mount the directory as "read/write"
I ended up moving the two apk's to a backup folder on my sdcard, however after reboot I am still getting the prompt. I did not move the .odex files. Doing that now..

Perhaps you only copied them?
FWIW, the FWupgrade.apk didn't have an associated odex file on mine.
It didn't actually move sdm, but rather copied it. To fix sdm and renove notification for update, I used Titanium Backup to create a backup thrn uninstalled the apk. Hope this helps.

I just froze SDM and FWUpgrade. Is that not good enough? Why is everyone renaming and deleting it?
I was wondering about the same thing why people are renaming and moving files. Maybe they don't have titanium backup to freeze it?
Freezing is all you need. These other extra precautions are not necessary.

You don't even need Titanium backup. I never see it mentioned here so I don't know if anyone knows it exists, but I think the free app "System Tuner" by 3c is much better that Titanium and has way more features.

Yeah, I just prefer to manually rename/remove files that I know for a fact I don't want running. Freezing apps via TiB works well for bloatware and stuff like that...stuff that I *may* want to activate again later, but in this case, I'm 100% sure I do NOT want to run any OTA updates.
Most people use titanium back up or other apps because a lot of users don't understand file and folder permissions or how to run commands with adb or terminal etc. Manually doing it in cases like this is good so you know that its disabled. Especially when its something like this.

That's what I did and No Update for Me! Also, being on a custom recovery helps!
