ICS Source Out! - HTC Flyer, EVO View 4G

It's on engadget:

ICS source released!
Well.... *twiddles thumbs with evil grin"
Thoughts? Anybody gonna try to make it for our device?
It's still uploading, but hey they're taking care of it.
Apparently it requires 16 GB of RAM, 250 GB empty disk space, and some other killer specs to compile.
Here's a nice video qbking77 made about the release:

I hope maybe a cm8 port will be in our future

CM9. The CyanogenMod Team reserved CM8 for HC, but as the source never got out they're just skipping to 9.

Did not know that, learn something new

Apparently its a real monster to compile.
I read elsewhere that even with 250gb+ of HD space and 16gb RAM were looking at 5+ hours to compile.
Not to mention all the tweaking that has to happen for the vanilla to work on specific devices.

Green light.

Something tells me that we are at the back of the line with the Flyer even though this device might benefit most from it.

Hidden in the article in the op was that honeycomb source looks to be in the release.

HTC's fault. They gotta spend around.. hmm... couple months to integrate sense ui, and for View customers they gotta wait for Sprint to get done with it too.

well at least this will open up things for some neat custom ROM tweaks. Especially since ICS is based off HC and we already have working kernel and radio.

I see that the Flyer is not among the devices that Cyanogenmod develops for.
Is there any hope that someone will put together an ICS mod for Flyer?
I like HC but I don't like the permanent status bar and I don't like the way notifications work. ICS is much more suited for the flyer for these reasons. I would take stock ICS over HC with Sense even though I think that Sense is really cool.

For Cyanogenmod, we need to find a lead developer to bring the Flyer into the fold.
If the status bar in HC is one of your big issues, you won't like ICS any better. It's still there and works the same, can dim but not remove the bar.
"Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich System Bar and Action Bar
These are located in the System Bar - present in all apps - and enables you to navigate instantly to Back, Home, and Recent Apps. Virtual buttons are present across all apps, but can be dimmed by applications for full-screen viewing.
You can also access the contextual options for each app in the Action Bar at the top of the screen."

I read somewhere that for devices like the Flyer that have capacitive buttons, that the bar is not needed. I could be wrong.
How do we go about enlisting a developer?

I have not seen anything that indicates there is an option to remove the bar. Google considers the bar "permanent decoration". You can dim it, not remove it.

It seems that you're right and that I was mistaken.
It also seems that on tablets, ICS notifications will work the same as they do on HC. That's too bad because I reallly like the pull down notification screen. For a 7" tablet, this works better than the pop up notifications on HC. I also still like the task killer. It is crazy that it is so difficult to close Apps on HC or earlier versions of Android.

I guess that's the answer to most questions.

There is really no reason to close apps unless they are misbehaving. Running a task killer just fights with the internal android task manager which works very well in HC.

What you are saying may be true from a technical perspective but enough people want this feature that Google has added it as a standard feature of ICS.
For me, it is just a housekeeping issue. Once I am finished with an App, I don't want to see it unless I need it again. If I am working on three things, I want easy access to those three things. I don't want to see some game that I played yesterday or the image of some website that I last visited.

Ok, I wasn't clear. Some people obsess about trying to close all tasks to free up memory, which is fruitless and fights the system which is trying to maximize memory use so that task don't have to be reloaded when needed. That action using a "task killer' is bad, makes the system lag and use more battery. Closing individual apps that you are done with and that don't need to run for background data is fine and there are many good applications on the market to do that, just be careful about automated task killers.

It would be nice if someone were to start a CM port for the Flyer. If HTC even does do an ICS update (unlikely, in my opinion), it's sure to be much later, considering Honeycomb is still not out. I'm sure there will be ICS ROMs for the Flyer, though...just maybe not CM.

[REQUEST] Port JsChiSurf's Power Control Notification mod to the Photon?

Having owned my EVO since November of last year, one of the mods/apps on my phone that has been with every ROM is JsChiSurf's power control notification bar. It is THE most useful and crucial apps I have on my phone. Although I know there are other 'widgets' on the market that "sort of" replicate it, JsChiSurf's mod is the only one that allows you to have access to any of the power controls you frequently need from any screen quickly and easily, whereas, with most power control widgets, you have to go back to the screen where the widgets are located.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=836721&highlight=notification+power
My Photon is arriving today and since it doesn't appear JsChiSurf made the jump to the Photon, it's the one mod that I'm going to truly miss. Because of that, I was wondering if any of you talented developers out there knows how to port this mod to the Photon? I'm willing to pay a bounty ($20, via Paypal) to anyone who can do it.

I agree. This has always been a great feature on past rooted phones. This type of mod is also included in CM7 and is better because you can change them on the fly without flashing and can have more than 6. Either way, would be nice to have.

Brother (or sister if you're female), thank you for pointing me in the direction of that app. I just installed it and it looks like the concept was modeled on JsChiSurf's notification bar (and considering the developer was from XDA, I wouldn't doubt it).
I just installed it on my Photon and it seems to work the same way. In fact, it's a bit more user friendly in that it allows you to select which toggles you want on the notification bar from a menu selection, rather than editing a text file. And although I haven't tested ALL the functions yet, so far, most are working on my Photon. I now have room again on my homescreen (temporarily had widgets installed) and can now access those functions from any screen.
Again, thank you very much! I guess I need to pull my head out of my *ss once in a while and take a look at what's new on the Market.

I tried this for a while. It's nice, but the Photon doesn't support the all-in-one notification, so each control takes a notification slot. It's nice, but I'm still holding out for Power Control Notification.

Same here! And I don't have root access.
I went to the app in market. From the description there it seems like a new first time developer. But he sounds like he is willing too work with people. Perhaps an email asking if he could reverse things, make the bar disappear in portrait and show in landscape.

I completely agree with the previous post. If not if people want to list what they want in a tool, I might get time to look at writing the app and make it available here and to devs to integrate in custom roms. Just be aware that root is required to do this properly.

AOSP based ROM?

Any of the devs have plans to make an AOSP based ROM? I'd love to get rid of Sense.
We are sure to see AOSP eventually, but it may take a very long time to get the radio issues usually associated with porting AOSP ROMs to non-AOSP devices resolved. That is why devices like the Rezound have taken so long to see AOSP ROMs even with a fairly robust dev community. Your best bet in the short-term is through "De-Sensitized" ROMs that have the Sense framework intact but remove most of the theming to give the appearance of AOSP.

My personal preference is Sense (even when I had AOSP on my original Incredible, I searched tirelessly for themes that would make my phone look more like Sense 4), so I'd disagree with you there, but god do I agree with you on the WiFi notification and the persistent location symbol. There is almost no real estate in the notification bar for actual notifications; the whole thing is taken up by completely unnecessary indicators.
I also find the Sense app drawer really frustrating--there is just way too much going on. I keep the Sense launcher because I like the clock, but I'd love to see a custom ROM remove the unnecessary sidebars in the app drawer and make it look more like Nova.

[Q] App list, dialer and other basic questions after Jester's Liquid ICS

I've recently updated to Jesters Liquid beta rom and now to the new 2.7 version if this makes any difference. I used to have a setting on the stock rom that allowed me to view all my apps as a list instead of pages of icons. I can't find this setting now. Is this due to Nova launcher, ICS, or me just not being able to find it? I really, really prefer a list with large text, much like the manage apps list that shows up, instead of a bunch of little icons that all look similar to older eyes that also don't see colors well.
I use Go Contacts ex and it's dialer, but this seems to be the same with the stock dialer. If I program a number to speed dial that has pauses inserted int he number, the call will not go through. It worked on the stock rom, but not on the newer roms. Is there a different dialer I could try or some other setting I can use to make these numbers with the pauses work again? (that's a trick from long ago where you would insert a pause after the phone number and then another number after it, like a password or access code, so that you could get into a voicemail system, etc. by just using your speed dial)
Pop up notification from a phone call. Any way to really increase the size of the text on this? I don't have any contact pictures downloaded, so I need to be able to see the name or number of who's calling. Any suggestions?
The status bar at the very top. I think I've figured out most of the icons, but could use a little help to be sure. Left to right it looks like
Bluetooth Screen brightness Location settings? (does this turn on and off GPS or what?) Refresh (is this to turn off sync features or what does it do) Wifi, Flashlight. How did I do?
I can come up with more questions, but I'm guessing you're tired of reading by now, so any help would be greatly appreciated.
So, 24 hours, almost 200 views and not one response? I must have asked the most difficult noob questions ever, or am just so stoooopid that no one wants to waste their time with me. Wonder which one it is?
I can only help with the status bar question.....
Go to Menu.... System settings .... Interface ....... Status bar ....... Toggles....... Power widget ....... Widget button order.
From there you can see what is selected and the associated icons. I have changed the defaults, so I don't know if your guesses are correct. From the Power widget menu, choose Widget buttons to change which buttons are displayed.

I'm using Apex launcher on Liquid's pure ICS, not Nova on Jester's, but they're more alike than different and you can install Apex if Nova doesn't have this. But either way, try hitting the menu key, then Manage Apps, it should give you a list like you're looking for. Likewise, go to the App Drawer and click on Menu and it should give you the same option, or Settings -->Device -->Apps

I use the stock dialer, so I'm not sure about Go, but having used it in the past, I'm sure what you're looking for is in there. You might want to see if there's a FAQ section on their website, or go to one of the less technical forums and do a search in their apps section. Alternately, you could try DW Dialer, EX Dialer or Dialer One and see if they better meet your needs.

I tried it on the stock dialer too. The problem appears to be related to the stock dialer programming. I think the dialer apps I've played with somehow just piggyback off the stock dialer for function.

And just to be clear. If I select Manage Apps, a list of apps does show up like I'm wanting, but that menu is made for stopping, uninstalling, etc. I would like my app drawer button or whatever you call it to display my apps as a list when I'm looking for an app to open. It's an inelegant solution but maybe a good start. Download ES File explorer. That has an app manager button that lists everything in text format. Click in an app and it gives you a choice for details or open.

That kind of works. If I leave the app manager open in list view as the last thing in that app, then each time the app is opened I get a list view of apps. It requires pushing on the app and then pushing open, but at least it's a list, so I'm happy. Apex lets me move the app icon out of the way and stick the ES app in it's place, so this will work for now I think.

It's a Sense thing. I think most of what you're looking for is available stock on Sense based roms.
Someone just developed a new one based on the BAMF leak and it's pretty smooth.

I'll look, but honestly, I really don't enjoy switching to new roms. It takes me forever to get everything up and running the way I want it and to learn almost enough to function daily with it. I do like the list view though, so I'll keep an eye on reports of battery life. I did try the BAMF leak and was extremely disappointed with the battery life (running extended battery) and data drops. That was my first new rom (I originally rooted just to get rid of bloatware), and I was complaining about my dislikes on another forum when someone pointed me to Liquid's version here. I downloaded Jesters beta version and loved it compared to the BAMF leak. After having read all the internet articles, I was under the impression that the BAMF leak was the cat's meow. Now I realize those articles are about as unbiased as the national so called news.
Is Santod's new sense rom as laggy as the BAMF leak, or have they tweaked that out of it by now.

Almost no comparison to BAMF. Much smoother. Honestly, not as smooth as Liquid/Jester but data/signal seems more stable and almist everything works.
If visual stuff, contrast and ease if use are issues for you, it's worth a spin. I'm also running Apex. I don't know if that contributes to lag over the native Sense, but it has the features I want.
Yeah, switching toms is a royal pain, but you do what ya gotta do.

HTC One Max "Google Experience" Edition

Ok, so it's just the leaked 4.4 launcher. On the Max, at least for me, all you have to install the launcher, attempt to open it (you will be met with an error,) and then the next time you attempt to open it by pressing home, it should work without a problem. I am using the latest HTC update, but I don't think the results will vary if you haven't done the OTA yet. Again, you don't have to install all three files. The other two won't even install without root, anyway.
Link to the page I found this on: http://www.phonearena.com/news/How-to-install-the-new-Google-launcher-and-apps-from-Android-4.4-KitKat-keyboard-Hangouts-camera-wallpapers_id48969
Direct link to the apk: http://www.mediafire.com/download/3ina0fd8fwki5fo/GoogleHome.apk
Enjoy!
Observations: It looks cool enough, like stock Android before it, but updated. There is the persistent google now bar that is non-removable. Saying "ok google" on the home screens (except settings/app drawer) will bring up google now voice search, and swiping to the far left page will bring up google now. Pages will be added dynamically - that is, you can't have an empty page. If you need to add a widget, you hold down on an empty spot or press menu (pinching is not available, and it's not linked to the app drawer anymore.) Lastly, the lockscreen will still remain the same, and like all other launchers on all other HTC phones, you cannot use your HTC widgets.
More stuff: If you looked at the page, and were hungry for the 4.4 camera, don't bother. Pano/photosphere do not work. Download the 4.3 one instead at: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2340858, someone's direct current as of 11/20 google drive mirror: https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B_fGBfBq-dl2M21QVk5Eb0JDQ0E/edit?usp=sharing

owned the max briefly, loved the home screen (with the update widgets, like facebook etc, was wondering if this was feature of the launcher or a widget? and if we can port this feature to other devices) I appreciate your prompt response.
The Sense lock screen and widgets can only be ported to other HTC phones due to all the files in the background (the framework.) It is not impossible, but it is pretty difficult.

Part of the sense framework. Your closest bet would be flipboard, but I don't think it has social network additions.

as mentioned by the OP already, its part of Sense and not an APK that's all we know.. there seems to be early efforts already in the samsung forums.. This is the best thing i could find - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2410165

Don't base your opinion of HTC's on the One Max, there is virtually no developing going on for this device on Verizon or sprint or the international version. I've had 7 htc's and they've all had a lot of great developers making lots of roms and themes, but the One Max just hasn't been that way. There are about 3 or 4 really great ROMs and a couple themes, BUT THATS IT. I'd suggest ViperRom.

Thanks for this. I love the "Ok google" everywhere!
