RTFM: the "back" functionality, double-tapping and other cool stuff - Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet

Read the manual that came with your nook - they've got some cool tips there.
For example, it does have a "back" functionality that we all are used to - to go back swipe left on the status bar (black bar at the bottom)
Double-tapping on the home screen arranges stuff and auto-aligns it. Double-tapping in their shop app will do some other funky stuff.
When reading - tap on the center of the screen to see stuff such as font selection, brightness, etc.
Pinch-to-zoom works to resize covers of books and media on the shelves.
Double pushing the "n" hardware button will return to home screen.
To continue reading whatever you were reading last - either tap on the little book icon at the bottom, or, on home screen, tap on the "Keep Reading:"

[MOD]Button Saviour w/invisible launch icon

This apk is a slight mod on jerryfan2000's Button Saviour app (similar to softkeys). . . the only difference I made on his app is that the ever-present overlay icon (that you press to bring up the soft keys) is invisible.
So if you learn where it is on the screen, just touch there to bring up the keys--and you won't have to have an always-present arrow overlay sitting on your screen. It gives you the option to set it to launch on a long-press, in case you find yourself accidentally launching it.
If you have trouble finding it the first time (after all, it is invisible), just switch to the Sense theme, then back to default...
If you have trouble finding it on a regular basis ( harder than you might think) and your LCD density is set to 250 like mine, here's a setting that will make it easier:
1. Set it to come up on the right side (default)
2. Set "icon position" to 0
... This will give you an easy landmark to help you find the invisible launcher icon: the bottom of the volume down button on your nook. Look for that, then touch the edge of the screen next to it to launch button saviour.
If anyone has found useful landmarks for screens with LCD densities other than 250, please post and I'll update.
If you want to check this out, you'll have to uninstall Button Saviour (if you already have it) for it to successfully install.
If the button menu looks tiny, you might want to get the Spare Parts app and check the box for Compatibility Mode (then reboot). This should increase the size.
If you like it, please thank jerryfan2000 (his thread here), as the app is his creation--my contribution in making this mod was an idea and two blank png images.
Is this file the same one as the site in your sig? I'm assuming thats your site b/c it has all of the info from your thread over in General.
But so you know if you change the Theme to Sense you can get the position of the button without having to play with the numbers.
Also on 0 it wasn't on the bottom of the Volume Down button. I'm gonna guess this is b/c your LCD density is 250 and mine is default but just FYI.

Good point on the LCD density - I'll edit.
Yeah, same file as the one on the site.
I am using this now after switching many times. The visible button on Button Savior drove me nuts. The Softkeys button could be made transparent but it kept floating around so I never knew exactly where it was. But I got this one finally to my liking. I left it in the center on the right side. Easy to find in landscape mode because it is next to the hard home button. For portrait mode I put a very tiny piece of black tape next to the edge of the screen. This allows me to feel exactly where the button is. Works perfectly for me now. Thanks.
*settings are at 260 for the slider, LCD Density is set to 204. I used the Sense Theme of Button Saviour Mod to get the numbers to visually line up with the hard home button in landscape mode and to apply the black tape in portrait mode.
Would it be possible to somehow map the hard home button to the "invisible" app to make the menu appear?
I love Button Savior 5, but it would be great if it appears when the hard home key is pressed. Even better if I could set it to bottom center of the screen in portrait!

I don't think u can map Button Savior that way. You can mount Softkeys that way. Leave the Invisible button Savior installed. Also install Softkeys. Set Softkeys as your home launcher. In the Softkeys settings set the home launcher of your choice and set Softkeys to one home tap and your home launcher to double tap. You will also probabily want to "kill" the Soft keys floating button if u are running Button Savior along with it.
The only problem I can think of with that configuration is that when u hit the Button Savior Home button all u will be doing is opening up the Softkeys buttons unless u double tap it. U may want to set the Softkeys button to a double tap and your chosen launcher to a single tap to avoid that redundancy.
How to set trigger button to bottom center of the screen
Can I set the trigger at the bottom center not on left nor right side?
Thanks a lot!

FBreader on CM7 ?

I am running CM7 (Android 2.3) and I installed FBreader.
Unlike other apps, it overlaps the notification bar on the top which has the soft Menu and Back buttons.
So I cannot do anything other than the default.
Am I missing something, or is FBreader not workable for 2.3 on Nook Color ?
I also use the FBreader on CM7 and the only way i got it to work is to download Soft Keys to be able to have the full menu/home/back buttons on the homescreen no matter what. Then i set the settings to always show the title bar inside FBreader. After that i uninstalled soft keys cause i didnt need it anymore
I am trying Moon+ instead - but with that app, I cannot find any settings at all ! ?
Aha, an errant tap on the screen brought up the settings.
So far, so good with Moon+
Hi,
I use Button Savior from the market for my buttons. FBReader works well with it.
You can minimize button savior to a little icon that doesn't block text significantly.
If you are just getting started with FBReader on NC, I have also found
"FBSync", "Dropbox" and "Calibre library" (from market) useful.
Also use with Calibre on the PC to organize/convert ebook formats:
http://calibre-ebook.com/
Hope this Helps,
Peter
In FBreader, if you press on the bottom 1/4 of the screen right in the middle of the page it will make the notification bar and the menu bar pop up. (this is also true for Aldiko)
It's still a good idea to use button savior or softkeys though.

Aha ! Just what I was looking for - thanks !
I use FBReader all the time too, but I have the Phiremod and it came with the option to change the volume keys. I use the default setting with the UP volume the menu key and the DOWN volume the back key. Very useful.
I also have Button Savior

[Q] Status bar ?

I used the the auto nooter to root froyo however I am having a bit off a problem with the controls of how my nook behaves. I think it is the status bar which contains my menu and I am unsure how to fix this because I do not even know how to determine if I have a preset to full screen. So, what annoys me about this is the kindle application when i start reading a book I have to exit the app all together by pushing home when I am finished because the menu hides. In my settings I do not have auto hide checked for my status bar, so maybe it is a full screen setting issue ? Any thoughts on this ?
Set up softkeys to use double press home "n" key to bring up softkeys... then you can quickly press the "n" key and have softkeys back button available.
I just discovered 'Button Savior' which seems to work well also. (Running CM7.1RC1)

[Q] Help with bottom buttons, new to honeycomb

I just picked up a 10.1 tab. It is rooted with recovery and the Overcome 10.1 1.2.1 rom on it. Everything is pretty awesome but I have a couple of questions due to my newness to HC.
I currently have one home screen. If I am on the home screen and I press home it shows my home screen on top of the home screen with a dark, see through, background. Looks pretty silly. What is the purpose of this?
If I long press the icon to the right, that normally brings up running apps on the left, I also get the stupid home screen laid over top of my home screen. Again, what is the purpose.
I got a lot to learn, thanks!

By default, when you press the home button while already on your homescreen, it gives you a preview of all your screens. You only have one screen though so its showing you a translucent preview of your only screen. Press the home button again and it should go away.
The button to the right only needs to be pressed, not long pressed, to bring those up.
FYI, if you long press the home button, it's a built in task killer.

Lol, that makes perfect sense. I would get the multiple screen previews on my thunderbolt too. Only having one screen was throwing me off.
The button on my right looks like a square on a square appears to bring up a list of running apps with previews on the left side of my screen. Like a task manager to switch running tasks. Long pressing that button doesn't bring up the running tasks but the home screen previews. I'll double check that in a few.

The Square on Square is Recent Apps (like your thunderbolt would bring up if you longpress the Home button).
Long pressing the Home button on this Tablet brings up a Task Killer app (which does show your running apps and gives you the ability to end them)
...You can also access this Task Killer program, as well as some others by pressing the bottom middle button (Most ROMs, including the Stock ROM, have this button set as a ^ symbol)
NOTE: There is NO WAY to change the programs that come up when pressing this bottom middle button, they're built into the system in some way that we can't access.

Are you annoyed by accidental navigation key clicks?

I am using a Galaxy Nexus. Most of the time, keys on the navigation bar are not touched by accident. But when playing a game I often touch the soft key accidentally. Because many games require to touch controls on the edge of the screen, which is very close to the navigation bar. iOS, on the other hand, does not have this problem, because apps use the full screen, and there is one hardware button. Also, I often accidentally swipe up from the bottom to launch Google Now, when actually I wanted to scroll up. There is no menu to disable that swipe up action, except disabling the Google Now. I want to use Google Now but not by swiping up. I would prefer just a icon on my home screen to launch Now.
I already saw some custom ROMs have a feature to toggle the navigation bar, but I think there must be some official solution to this. The solutions I can think of;
1. The custom ROM way. Add toggle menu to the power menu.
2. Make the buttons as physical buttons not capacitive buttons.
3. Add another physical key on the side to enable/disable navigation bar.
4. Swipe from left to right on the navigation bar to lock it. Swipe again to unlock it.
5. Long pressing Home toggles the navigation bar. On first long press, the home button is changed to a lock icon. To unlock the bar, long press the lock icon.
6. Or Google Now is launched by long pressing of the multitasking button.
What do you think? Do you have the same troubles?

You can kinds of disable it using SwipeLaunch Disabler.
https:/play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=hk.sld.SwipeLaunchDisabler
Honestly probably all nexus owners experience this problem although I personally give it up for awesome stock launcher and features and being able to easily hack it.
