[Q] Best modem for AT&T? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just wondering what the best modem is for ATT and some other question about modems.
Right now im running wanam lite kj1 5.6 with ICS domination theme. I have KI4 modem flashed because i was on villanrom which i might go back to because it has better battery life.
Does the modem affect the ROM in anyway? just wondering because most roms have a modem prefix to them on the development forum. or is there a certain modem better in every senario?
Thanks for your help!

I too would like to know the best modem for at&t. My current one (Current official uk unbranded) seems to completely lose signal after a phone call or just randomly, it quickly reestablishes connection but still annoying.

Have you tried Odin to push the uckj4 leak modem for the i777? All the 9100 modems I e used on my i777 turn the radio off when a voice call occurs then reconnects after call fails.

Maybe i9100 modems just dont work on i777 and vice versa. Hopefully someone could correct me but i guess its worth a try. Is it better to flash modems via odin then CMW? and another question whats the difference between a modem and a kernel? I know on some level the kernel has something to do with the firmware and the modem has to do with the baseband, but im still unsure about the difference.
Thanks again!

Also have the same problem. The 3g lost the signal randomly. my baseband is "UNKNOWN" . Any idea?

I'm assuming these guys are running real I9100s on AT&T (otherwise they're in the wrong forum) - pushing an I777 modem will likely completely break them.

I'm on baseband XXKI3, running my I9100 on AT&T... don't have any issues. No call drops, no signal drops after calls are done, etc. Works fine.

Funny - I have XXKI3 as well on AT&T and periodically I get drops and it's almost always just as syncing is initiated.

@robsw
I noticed you are located in Chicago. the problem could just be that AT&T sucks horribly in the downtown area. specifically anywhere near River North or the loop. I have tried just about every available modem and I still have data connection issues in those areas. Even friends with iPhones comain about poor data in those areas.

I use the ki1 modem on my I9100 on at&t in louisiana. Ive found this modem gives me the best signal in my area. I did use ki4 for a while but i kept getting dropped calls inside my house. Now with ki1 no more dropped calls

I live in Champaign,IL. Data drop/hang issue always there on KG2, KI3, KI4 modem. I had data issues even I have full bar of signal. But I do realize that data drop issue is location related. Every time I go to the same place, I got slow or data drop problem. Ha! maybe something isn't configure nicely between the tower and our S2.

yea, I was in Chicago this weekend, kept turning on Airplane mode and back on..
at&t is making me pretty mad.

GT-i9100
4.0.3
Baseband version
I9100XXLPH
XXLPH Kernel as well.
I am in Colorado and my service is great. I dont have much experience with the GB radios because as soon as I got the phone Iw ent to ICS and never went back

It may be worth checking the sticker under the battery to confirm the phones version. In Australia, New Zealand, Israel and some other countries they also sell the I9100T which is just the same as the international version but works better on a T model modem. There are plenty of them linked in the Aussie thread in general.

I'm in the North suburbs. This most often occurs when I'm driving. The call will drop and more often than not, when I glance down at the phone, data will be syncing.

[Q] Having reception problems with my i9100.

Hi there everyone.
I have a Samsung Galaxy SII. I live in Australia, have an unbranded phone, and am currently with TPG as my phone provider.
I have been experiencing these problems for a long time, and after trying to figure out what's wrong with it, it's time to ask for help. Haha.
These problems started after I flashed a new modem after installing a ROM. Previous to flashing, the reception had been fine. After flashing the ROM, and not the modem, my reception was still as good as it was when I first received the phone. However, after flashing a new modem, the reception dropped significally. Where my brother also with a i9100 could receive full bars of HSPA/3G, I could only receive 2/3 bars of G. Where he would have 3 bars of G (in our house, it has this stupid insulation that really nerfs reception), I would receive absolutely no reception.
I have tried countless modems (pretty much ever modem since K13, testing for reception, but never have much luck, maybe a 1 bar fluctuation up/down).
Do you have any ideas what could be wrong? How I could fix it? Thanks very much.
find the modem your brother have ,download it from the intratech and flash it
have you tried KE7?
I got a good expereance with this on Data speed, but I dont know about reception strenght.
go through discussions of this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1131950
He hasn't updated for a while, and is using the K13 modem. I have tried it, along with the K14, and KE7 already.
do a factory reset without the sim and sd card....
I tried factory resetting without the SD and Sim card, but it still didn't work.
Any other ideas? Haha.
Do you have i9100 or i9100t

I haven't, maybe that's the next thing I'll try. But does your box say i9100, or i9100t? Mine just says i9100. Haha.
Edit: Omggg I love you. Hahaha. I flashed a T-modem, and now I'm getting full reception. Thanks somuch!

[Q] ICS Modem for 850Mhz

I'm using AOKP Resurrection Remix 2.5.3 with Fluxi Kernel and XXLPS Modem. Is this a good modem for 850Mhz? Is there a better one?

Yes, couse we have the international gs2 version all modem are for 850mhz bands so dont worry and use the one with the rom.
I'm going to jump on this one as well.
Is there a way (either in basic settings or editing a file) that I can force the phone to use the 850MHz band?
My carrier is shutting off the 2100MHz network in a shade over a month and I want to start seeing how bad my reception is going to be once this happens. And I'd rather have nothing than use the really awful 2G network they still run (even though I thought they'd shut that off several years ago to force users on to their LTE network).
Although in the wrong section (should be in q&a not general) I'm also interested. The best way I found is that to search for roms that are for your country and see what modem they use. For ex. I'm in Thailand and I found that my modem, DCKL1 works best for me.
INeri, thanks for your reply.
NZed, sorry I didn't know it should be in QA. I'll search in other roms, maybe I can get anotherone.

Three UK branded S2 default modem?

Hello all
I'm just wondering what modem do the three branded s2 handsets come preinstalled with in the uk? I'm trying to find good modems for my s2 but cannot find something that would work as well as I would want it to. For example the other day my mate with a wildfire, on the same network had full bars of signal, whereas I had barely 1 bar. I was using Ki4 at the time, now I changed back to kl1 (im on checkrom v6 atm, but planning to go to cm9 again). Can anyone direct me to the modem.bin file or a stock rom file from the Three branded handset, i'd like both a gingerbread stock and ics stock rom from them if possible. If they are modems which are easily available please share the names with me.
Thank you
EDIT:
I tried a number of modems, which includes NELP2 which is meant to be good with three, although I don't know why I have had this problem on several roms before, where my signal randomly dissapears and goes to emergency only calls. Can anyone help with that also?

I recommend NELP4. It is designed for Three but many UK users use it as it supports great battery life and speeds + signal strength. I'm on O2 and using NELP4 and have great reception in places where there was no reception on LQ5/LQ6
modem signal dropping
hi,
You could try using ki4 modem ive been using this even after rooting my phone (originally used on GBrom) and had no probs with signal drop or overheating as some users have iasues with various modems.

Which baseband/modem version would you recommend?

Which modem/baseband version should I use for my Bell Samsung Galaxy S2 I9100M? I'm using the Bell network in Canada.
Right now, I'm using baseband version I9100MUGMA5 and the battery drains fast and there is frequent signal drop compared to when I was using baseband version I9100XXLS8 but I wasn't sure this baseband was using the right frequencies for Bell.
Thanks.
Try the modems bundled with stock roms released by your carrier first; reasoning being you'd hope they tested that the modem works for most people in most places with their network when they tested the rom before release. Then try modems bundled with roms released by other carriers in your country.

The I9100MUGMA5 baseband is the one that I had when I had the stock android from Bell for the Samsung Galaxy S2. I was just hoping that someone could tell me that another baseband is way better with the S2 for a better signal and battery saving.
Thanks MistahBungle for your reply.
According to Samfirmware, your carrier has released 5 stock roms total. You've tried one modem. So, using simple arithmetic, you have another 4 you can try.
Or you can sit here waiting for a reply that may never come (which will probably tell you the exact same thing I just did). Either you want to fix your connectivity, or you don't.
I've given you the fishing rod, a bucket of bait & detailed instructions on where to fish, you need to do the rest.

Thanks for the straight answer. I was just hoping someone would have went through this exercise before me but I guess not. I'll try all the modem drivers and see which one is better. I'll return with my findings.

[Q] What Are My Options? - i717R stock 4.0.4 Rooted/Unlocked WindMobile

Before I get in to details about my conundrum, let me explain that I have experience with flashing all sorts of stuff with HTC phones, so lay it on me.
Now for what im running.
Rogers i717r, with rogers 4.0.4 on Wind Mobile. Voice/data works...ish
I purchased the phone from a shoddy cellphone liquidator (i know, i know, but I NEEDED a phone)
I poked around in the phone for a bit, the flash counter was at 6, and ICS blaze.zip was on the sd card.
The Baseband is Unknown.
I Have rooted it.
always shows 4 bars and wont let calls go through sometimes in 3g mode.
ive searched though this forum for a week, i see alot of back and forth.
Can i install a ICS modem on jb?
does the flash counter have a limit?
should i just stick with ICS stock and try modems?
get me running in tiptop shape, and i shall donate.

I am not on Rogers, but I think there are many that have great success with Blaze running a JB rom. Trying different modems will have no ill effects, it will either work or it wont. There are many on Rogers that carry a pocket full of modems with them and swap them out depending on the area.
As for the flash limit, if there was one, im sure I broke it long ago.

Im not on rogers either, i need this phone to function on AWS.(wind mobile)
I fiddled around with the APN, and put as one setting instead of separating Internet and mms, it tends to wake up the "4g" faster.
so yeah, i should be fine flashing cyanogen 10.0 with the blazeICS modem? to be connected to a aws network.
