I am currently running bionix fusion which i know is an eclair rom however i want to flash obsidian, my question was can i flash a froyo rom just as i would any other rom or do i have to install a kernel for 2.2 and when going back to a 2.1 rom do i have to do anything? Sorry if my question is confusing...
Flash it like anything else (depending on the rom), instructions should be in the first post, most flash just like any other rom.
In going from 2.1 to 2.2, you can use CWR to flash the new ROM. The ROMs come with the kernels. But you will want to be sure to follow the install instructions of the ROM you've selected.
Now, if you should decide to go from 2.2 back to 2.1, you will need to flash a 2.1 ROM first. If all if you is a Nandroid recovery without flashing a 2.1 ROM first, you'll have to introduce yourself to ODIN.
so i should be good if say i go from obsidian to bionix as long as i dont do a nandroid backup first thanks for the quick reply by the way

The key word there is *should*.
From what I can tell, if you do a nandroid backup & restore, you want that to be to the same version of the OS. So, you probably don't want to do a backup from a 2.2 ROM and then recover to a 2.1 ROM, or visa-versa. No harm in doing the backup, however. The thing to avoid is the recovery into the wrong ROM.
As long as you flash a ROM that includes the kernel, you *should* be fine. That said, it is possible that something could go wrong, in which case having ODIN around can save you. (It took me several hours to figure out how to get the right drivers to connect my PC to my phone using ODIN. But once I figured that out, flashing JFD on the phone takes only a few minutes. But I don't flash "in the field", only at home - so if something goes wrong, I'm in a position to repair it).
EDIT: I'm not sure why you'd want to go from a 2.2 ROM back to 2.1 if you've already ventured into the custom ROM world. If you're not happy with the Obsidian performance, you might try Onyx or another ROM, like Axura.

Just to summarize, followed by a question of my own.
Correct me if any of this is wrong. These are the points I gathered from reading this thread.
-Ok Nandroid backup is a program which can be used to backup and at a later time restore your stock firmware, i.e. stock 2.1.
-Backing up your current 2.1 ROM is safe, restoring might get you in trouble if you don't have the correct 2.1 kernal to match.
-Any of the popular 2.2 ROMS (Axura, Macnut, Obsidian) all come with the 2.2 kernal coupled.
-Downgrading from a 2.2 ROM, and restoring your Nandroid Backup of 2.1 can get you into trouble, unless you install a 2.1 ROM first which would restore a 2.1 Kernal at the same time.
Now my question is this. How do you backup not only your 2.1 stock ROM, but your stock kernal also? If you decide you don't like custom 2.2 ROMS and want to go back down to your stock 2.1 rom and kernal, how can you avoid having to install another custom 2.1 ROM with kernal, just to be able to put your restore 2.1 back. Confusing question I know, but basically, how can you just go from a custom 2.2 rom/kernal back to your own stock restore of 2.1(ROM and Kernal), will Nandroid backup the kernal also?

Nandroid is the backup/restore component of the ClockworkMod's ROM Manager app. You can use it on any version of the ROM, not only the stock 2.1 version.

Backups are safe. And restoring can get you into trouble if you don't restore to the same version of the OS (more specifically, the kernal, as you've indicated) that you made your backup from.

For this, you have to read the notes for each build. Yes, as a general rule, the latest works are on 2.2 (which means they come with a 2.2 kernal of some kind).

Yes. My trick is that if I flash ROMs, I don't do worry about nandroid. If I'm trying to customize my current ROM, then that's where I do a nandroid. But you have to do what works best for you.

thanks for the info, anyone know the answer to that last question?
you flash the kernel first and then you restore nandroid for the system that ran on that kernel.
Disclaimer: I am not responsible if you brick your phone
EDIT: don't forget the radio/modem as well, it is not being backed up by NANDROID.

Not sure if it was said AND I'm not 100% sure on this but I believe bionix (and a few others) include the kernals in there roms.
and im pretty sure you can just flash over the original fusion you were using and it will also install there kernals.
or you can scope out the bible in the development section to find a kernal.
umm ok so how do you backup your stock kernal, radio and modem?

So if Nandroid can be used to backup your stock ROM. Then how do you backup your stock kernal, radio, and modem?
I'm new to the whole modding scene so I have a few questions before I unlock my bootloader, install Ken's Gingerbread, etc.:
- I'm currently on Gingerblur 4.5. To get back to "stock" (which is the starting point in the "[VIDEO] How to upgrade to Gingerbread" thread), I have to find .83 and SBF lite down to it, root, and then follow the video? Or can I just do it now without reverting back to stock (Gingerblur 4.5 does have webtop enabled FYI)?
- How do I make a backup image so if I want to revert back to stock I can easily do this? Is this done via CWM? Or are these backup images easily found in the forums?
- After doing the [VIDEO] thread as mentioned above, if I want to install another custom ROM will I have to do this process all over again or can I just enter CWM, select a .zip, and it will wipe everything and install it?
Thanks for the help.

You might as well flash the 1.83 .sbf just to be safe. You'll be wiping everything when you upgrade to gingerbread anyways.

By "backup" image I assume you mean "method to get back to 1.83". This is easily found in the forums. Infact, here is a link that contains the files needed to go back to 1.83:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1163009

You won't be "selecting a zip" in cwm, as most of the installing of roms is done in something called "Fastboot", but yes, it is that easy. You will just be going into fastboot and it will wipe everything and install it. You don't go back to 1.83 ever again (unless you want to). You can switch from rom to rom to rom very easily.

Thanks a bunch!
Just to followup:
- By backup image I meant if I want to revert back to "stock" Gingerbread (.91). I doubt I'll ever want to flash back to .83 Froyo. Or can this "backup" process be completed using Fastboot and Ken's Gingerbread ROM found on the forums?
Hmm, is this where I find the .83 SBF: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1125944
I'm assuming I download the FULL, not the SERVICE??
And why does it say at the top that all are unlocked?

To revert back to stock you simply use fastboot commands with the stock system.img and boot.img files in ken's gingerbread rom found on the forums.

hi
About 8 months ago i got my Ace (first Android-phone) and since then have been waiting for cyanogenmod to be released for Ace. Now we have an Official RC3 and i wanted to try it. I rooted my phone some time ago and just installed CWM.
I know how to install a new mod/software but their are still some question left for me:
1.) If I install a complete new Software, why is a specific android version needed to install? (in case of CM7.2 its 2.3.X). What happens "behind the scenes" of an installation. It seems very different from installing a new OS on my desktop PC.
2.) This also results in the question, why do i have to roll back to a stock rom to flash a new rom? (most devs say "Stock rom X.X.X is needed")
3.) And this also results in the question, how do i install a new version of a mod?
For example: the nightlies for CM7.2 for ace. I read that i can just flash them over their predecessor, but a "clean" installation is recommended. Does that mean to flash a stock rom, and reflash a new nightly?
I hope that are not to much questions. They might be a bit redundant but i hope i could make my points
So far a good night (or whatever timezone your living in)
A Gingerbread 2.3.X baseband is required to flash any of the CM ROM and tweaks. You need to wipe data, cache and dalvik using CWM before installing a new ROM but you don't need to go to stock and reinstall everything. It is safe to flash another ROM after installing one...
Sent from my WAREZ impulses.
1.Behind the scenes---Format System to ext > Extract System Files > Install System > Flash kernel> Done!
2.Who said you need to roll back to stock every time you want to install a custom ROM?
3.For same type of ROM(same developer, same thread) just wipe cache and you're good to go or wipe data if bootloop occurs.
So my friend, just do the wipes correctly before installing new ROM and you have wrong info that you need to revert back to stock to install new ROM. ususally GB baseband is required. Nothing else
If the system partition is still formated, why is a (e.g.) 2.3 an installation requirement? OR it just this Baseband version on the phone that is important? AND is a mod also compatible with an already "moded" version from e.g. Vodafone? because this has another versionnumber (in my case S5830XWKP6).
It seems that i have a completely wrong imagination of the working principles of my phone. i always thought it might be like installing a new OS to my desktop.
I know that i have to wipe some things in order to install a rom (even though i also read a how-to post anywhere, that said it is unneccessary, but still doing it doesnt hurt.), nothing important on my phone what couldnt be backed up via USB (pictures, etc...)
@abhibnl: "GB baseband" => Great Britain?
because of bootloader/baseband. all custom rom is based on gingerbread, thus if u coming from froyo u need to flash with gingerbread stock rom first via odin to get the bootloader/baseband. but if u already on gingerbread theres no need to reflash stock rom. just wipe data, flash via clockworkmod recovery and u good to go.
btw gb=gingerbread
so if i install CM7 MIRACLE, do full wipe, i can install CM7.2 (official) just over it?
well...sounds a bit too easy if i see all those howtos how to unbrick your phone

I was asking why is it necesary to flash with Odin from CM9, 7.2 to stock ROM; isn't there other way ?
would it be possible to get back to stock by using KIES?
i know many people hate it due to high memory requirements (dont care. 4GB installed awaiting use!), but all it does is flashing official roms, right?
curious because i never used it because i have Vodafone software and they...well: new releases + Vf = ´nuff said
Kies won't recognize your phone foro flashing if it's on custom roms (or even stock roms from other regions).
Odin does practically the same process of Kies at a considerably lower memory cost.
Another method of going back to stock is if you have a cwm backup of a stock rom, but before restoring the backup you have to convert your file System to rfs. almost All (if not all) custom roms use ext4 file System cuz its faster (native to Linux).

Remember it dudes, only way of getting back to stock is ODIN or restore a backup converting partition to rfs.
Hi guys,
This is my first post(go easy on me) also english is my second language.
Anyway, i've had my ATT-i777 GS2 since launch & been keeping tabs on its development & such. I stayed on stock experience due to not having any issues at all. I think i waited long enough that i should try the ICS experience, ive' red quite a bit about it & learned of its huge improvement for Android.
So my question is what's the easiest way to get stock rooted ICS?
I have these options in mind:
1. update thru Kies & then use creepyncrawly guide UCLE5 Stock ICS with Root
- to me its risky because this have the brick bug
2. root GB with a custom kernel with CWM so then i be able to flash a CWM stock ICS rooted rom
- this one sounds more tedious to me but with this i can avoid KIES update(i think)
Keep in mind my phone is still bone stock GB 2.3.4 & this is my first attempt in flashing.
any more suggestions pls.
Whatever path you choose will be a little tedious. If you plan to flash a custom rom rather than stock ICS, then I would suggest that you root Gingerbread and install a custom Gingerbread kernel containing ClockworkMod Recovery, and then flash ICS from there. I suggest my guide for installing firmware without incrementing the flash counter. If it were my phone running 2.3.4, I would use zergrush toolkit to root, and mobile odin to install the kernel.

No. Just root it and then flash a Gingerbread kernel. You'll still be on the same base, 2.3.4.
Then, when you are ready to flash a custom rom, which will obviously be another base, especially if it is an ICS rom, then you should do a wipe data/factory reset before you flash the rom.

I use Titanium Backup.. to back up my apps and their data... just remember that if you back up system data you can't restore it on any rom but the one you made it on... but apps/app data can be installed from rom to rom.
A lot of the new roms require you to have an ICS bootloader. Pershoot has one you can download and flash/install with Odin. If you need it.
You will need an updated recovery... I use Infamous TWRP... it's a touch based recovery and in my opinion the best for this device..
As for you're other files.. you will need to backup them up on you're computer if you use Odin because I think it will format/wipe you're sdcard. You can also take the Titanium backup you made and put it on you're computer. If you have any questions just ask and I'll try to help.. Good Luck..
So after I backup my data on the sdcard partition,
1)I just need to choose stock ICS or JB and flash via Odin? I've heard performance isn't all that great with JB.
2) Use TWRP to install custom recovery. Are the ROM's pre-rooted?
Is this guide still up to date? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1807219
Is the file for the ICS 4.0.4 still current for ICS?

If you have a custom recovery now.. you can install TWRP recovery ( I suggest.. Infamous Twrp ) in that custom recovery via a zip file. If you don't have a custom recovery we can work on getting you one. .But I seen that you are rooted and running a custom rom and kernel so I would assume you have a custom recovery,...probably cwm.. I can tell you how.. easy as pie. But I think you need to find out if you have an ICS Bootloader.. You will need this if you plan on flashing an updated rom..
Don't use that guide you linked.. that rom is for the 3g tab.. could work but why chance it..
Find out about the bootloader and get back to me... I will give you a link to my dropbox. I have a zip with all you need to get rooted/running ics/and recovery.. if we need to go that route. I'm hoping you have an ICS bootloader and cwm recovery already. It will be a simple series of steps to get you an up to date recovery and then a rom of you're choice.
If this isn't the case you might have to flash a bootloader with Odin on windows or if you have an ICS bootloader but no recovery you will need to flash a recovery in Odin.

How to check for ICS bootloader
@lowpost99
Ok, I'm prepping for this right now while I wait to hear back from you. I'll take a backup with Titanium Backup, get any other files I want to keep off.
I have CWM 4.0.0.4, and I don't think I have an ICS bootloader as ICS wasn't out when I last rooted. How do you validate? I'm still up in the air about which rom to use, JB or ICS, so I'm still looking. But after reading the known issues for CM 10 8/25/13 at droidbasement.com it seems to read that the ICS bootloaders are only needed for the p4wifiUK, but doesn't mention p4wifi (GT-P7510) specifically. Is that meant to be inclusive of any p4wifi or only the UK version of the hardware. My 10.1 is a US model. Do I just need I need to use ODIN 1.85 to flash an updated recovery and the new CM10? Or are you certain that I'll need this ICS bootloader as well. Also before flash the new recovery, shouldn't I do a factory reset to just clean things up? I should be able to restore the apps with TB and get any other files back from my PC. Your opinion and advice are appreciated.
I had the most stable experience with pershoots cm 10.1 roms. If you are using the cwm recovery he compiles, you can even use the autoupdate feature of the official cm roms.
At the moment I am using an early version of 10.2 because the 10.1 rom had issues with the stock keyboard closing all the time on my P4.

I don't know how to manually place an icon on the home screens, because it doesen't appear in the app drawer. It must be my un-familiarity with ICS/JB vs HC. Any help is appreciated... I would like to restore my apps!
