[Q] Weather app that works with no mobile data connection? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I don't have a mobile data plan, and connect via wi-fi only at home. I am trying to find a weather app that work without an always-on internet connection. So far I have tried Accuweather, Weather Channel, and Weatherbug and they all fail when the internet connection is gone. I want an app that will update regularly when connected to the internet, but will also let me view the last weather update in the app when not connected to the internet. In all the above cases, as soon as the internet connection is gone the app is unusable and will not show me previously downloaded data. Sounds like a simple requirement, but it seems weather apps are generally not well written :/ Any suggestions?

Agreed bro..anyone?

The only one I know of that lets you view previously downloaded data when there is no internet connection is Palmary Weather.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.palmarysoft.forecaweather&feature=search_result
I have it on my phone and when there is no internet connection it just opens last updates. They also have a premium version ($2.99) but I believe that just has more widgets and map options.

Most weather apps suck IMHO especially Accuweather which won't even work on wifi but insists on using your 3G/4G data. Uninstalled immediately when I discovered that.
Try Palmary free and see how that works - connect to wifi, let it download some data, then disconnect and reload Palmary - it will still show previously downloaded data.
These days I just use the web browser to connect to weather sites but if I was going someplace with no internet I would update Palmary first so I could review forcast later.

Animated Weather Widget contains a option wich allows u to set wifi only in the settings

SPB Mobile shell - No weather data has been downloaded

SPB Mobile shell 3.5.5 build 10087. Weather not updating since May 16. Whey trying to update manually, I am getting "No weather data has been downloaded". Internet is working.
Your net provider server not supporting.
Just change another company sim.
You will find it updating now.
I have working internet connection. I tried WiFi, I tried to cradle to my PC. Spb.com and other sites open just fine in my Opera. Foreca.com also opens fine in my web browser.
SPB Mobile Shell weather does not update. I tried different locations, same result.
By the way, I noticed that SPB Weather is also unable to update information if Foreca is used as defalut. When I switch to Meteonova, everything works fine. The problem is that I could not find a way to change the weather source in SPB Mobile Shell which is a different application. Is Foreca.com used in SPB shell? Is it possible that Foreca has changed their data format and SPB applications are not able to pick up the information anymore? Could you verify at your end and confirm that SPB Mobile shell 3.5.5 can still pick up weather data?
My brother is getting the same error on his phone. We've tried doing a google search and resetting the phone. Don't know what the problem is!
Any fixes?
I had the same problem. I went into the settings and changed the update settings to "Only on free connections" and that fixed it for me.

I tried your suggestion and it is working. Thank you very much!!!
i have the same trouble, n try the way to my cell, good thanks man.
But I can not update via active sync (LAN) and even if I try to download it I reset the phone as if it operates a soft reset
i have the same problem since a week..cant update the weather anymore.."es wurden keine wetterdaten heruntergeladen"
i changed nothing before the problem begins
to see weather you must set the real time, exactly ,date, and houre and seconds so ,
i test it 4 time and it work if time is true ,not working if time is false
I am still having same problem. I have internet connection, I can browse the internet using web browsers, I tried activesync and wifi, same problem. I contacted SPB customer service - they are useless.

[Q] Data switch per app

Hi,
In my data plan I have only little roaming data included. (10mb per month or so)
Anything over that is WAAAY to expensive.
Now, when going abroad I'd like to be able to use my data connection just for selected applications. Now, when I turn on my data, practically every running app is going to try to connect, check for updates, syncronize,...
Is there any way to just switch on data for, say, the email app?
Thanks!
You'll need to be rooted but there are a firewall app like DroidWall should work. It has separate toggles for wifi vs 3G so you can let everything access data when on wifi and block most apps from 3G:
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.googlecode.droidwall.free
Droidwall is a good choice. Another alternative is Avast Mobile Security which also has a built-in firewall that will allow you to toggle wifi, 3g and roaming.
Sorry, I forgot to reply. That is exactly what I was looking for!
Thanks!

Internet connection sharing problem. [solved]

When I try to share my mobile data connection to laptop, my laptop can't access internet.
No matter if I use USB or Wifi connection.
Everything seems to be ok, as far as settings are conserned.
Computer recognises and connects ok to the wifi hotspot or usb connection, but can't access internet.
I've tried stock rooted/unrooted and foxhound roms without luck.
Old SGS2 can share net without a problem in sight on every custom rom I've tried. I really need my "lifeline" to work with this phone.
Suggestions anyone?
[ My operator tele-finland sent 2 settings files: internet and wap. Problem was, that the WAP settongs went as default APN... ]
Edit: I've tried Foxfi app with no luck. Seems like there is a signifigant problem with my phone settings conserning mobile data, sice foxfi couldn't verify my internet connection and facebook doesn't automatically update status and youtube app can't load a single video to display...
try this app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.koushikdutta.tether

Nice app, though it has trial quota and USB tethering only.
But one slight problem... still no internet connection.
Is the only way to (totally) reset mobile data operator settings by making factory reset/full wipe?:crying:

I used to have the exact same problem. However mine got fixed by editing the APN. Try clearing out the 'authentication type' and 'apn type' fields.
Thank you circuit89! My operator had sent me two setrings, internet and wap... Guess which one was chosen as default
Solution was to change default APN to internet from that obsolete WAP

[Q] 3G/WiFi data connection access control per App

Hi Guys,
I've been looking for a solution to my problem but found nothing solid so far.
Case looks like this: I'm traveling a lot. In Malaysia (where I live) I have unlimited data package and I don't really care how much data is downloaded by my apps via 3G or WiFi - in short, i don't care.
Problem starts when I'm traveling - if I'm abroad, I'm trying to minimize 3G data usage to save some money. Problem is that many "data hungry" apps start downloading the data as soon as they detect there is internet connection available. Most of the apps doesn't care if it's 3G or WiFi data connection. Some apps allow you to configure if they can use 3G or WiFi only - but not all.
I would like to be able to control if particular app has access to Internet via WiFi only or 3G+WiFi. Is there any way to achieve this?
P.S. O course - it would be a "dream coming true" if there was a way to control if App can use WiFi only or 3G+WiFi or "WiFi+3G (local) and WiFi Only (roaming). I don't this something like this exists but ... it would be nice
Thanks for hints in advance.

Gmail can't DL attachment on mobile data (but OK on VPN or Wifi!)

I've had this problem for many months on my Samsung S7 (it suddenly appeared). Now that I've bought an S10e I'm very displeased to have the same exact problem again. I didn't transfer anything from the S7 (knowingly. Perhaps some Google/Samsung auto-restoration of settings without my knowledge). The S10e was installed from scratch AFAIK.
Problem:
On the Gmail app downloading attachments on WiFi works fine. On mobile data it never works. It does nothing at all. Hitting preview continuously shows a 0% progress bar.
All other things work without issue on mobile data: Sending and receiving mail, browsing, navigation, YouTube, etc. is normal. Only Gmail attachments don't download...
I don't have adblockers or antivirus. Everything is updated. Gmail isn't on the background data restriction, nor do I use that function.
I tried the private DNS function, that didn't help either. Clearing the app cache and app data didn't help either.
+ VPN.
I spent some hours testing, and most of the time with an active OpenVPN tunnel (all traffic redirect through tunnel) to my home or to my office it works! The moment I disconnect the VPN, it stops working.
(Seems also to work on a LT2P Ipsec tunnel).
Some kind of DNS issues?
I have an older Motorola and an older Sony phone which don't show this problem, so it's not stemming from my Gmail account or my provider.
What can I try to fix this problem?
