urgent help needed - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hi guys i am in a very bad situation my friend asked me to put hebrew on his galaxy s 2 , so as a good friend i tried to help him idownloaded the orange zip file and use odin to flash it and now it got stuck on the boot screen i can go into download mode but i dont know how to bring it back to life
please help
thanks

Zip files are not meant for ODIN.
ODIN normally flashes tar files which has only the necessary files and no scripts inside.
Clockworkmod is used to flash zip files.
I think you used PDA button on ODIN to flash *.zip file.
Find a kernel with cwm , codeworkx's kernel or siyah kernel.
Flash using PDA of odin.
If it doesn't work, flash an entire stock rom using odin, download from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
Then flash a kernel with cwm, and flash hebrew zip in recovery

thanks for the reply I have one more question do I need a USB jig and also what custom binary count for mine says 2
is that a problem

If you can get into download mode, you don't need a jig. The binary count shows the number of times you flashed from download mode. It's not a problem, but it's a proof that you did, and it probably means your phone lost its warranty.

You dont need a jig if you can get into download mode but it will reset the binary counter for warranty purposes

Well, some people put the .tar's inside a zip to compress it, so it might be a Odin file after all.
Open the zip file, and if there is just ONE file there, extract it and flash it with Odin. If there are alot of files/folders, it's for CWM

Flashing Simply Honey Revolution 3.9

Hey guys so I am interested in flashing the simply honey revolution ROM on my samsung vibrant. But I am stuck. The instructions call for you to flash via Odin with the 512 PIT file. But when I download the light version for first flash in the instructions I find a .tar file. How do I flash this rom? Thanks for your help!
I have the same question, since I am used to work on the EVO 4G but not this phone. Any help will be appreciated. I already flashed a gingerbread bootloader, but I still need to flash this ROM.
Put the tar file in the pda and pit in the pit section.
just use that file but open PDA selection. it will flash it. also make sure you odin a gingerbread boot loader first.
Ok, understanding a little bit more. Right know I have the zip and the tar file inside that one. I don't have any Pit file mentioned. Also in the instrutions doesn't say if the phone needs to be in download mode or whatever mode. Thanks for any other info.
It should be in download mode to use ODIN.
Okay let me see if I have this process correct. From the page I download this http://www.multiupload.com/KP8HBPR20Z from under the instructions coming from eclair/froyo. Inside I see the .tar file. (not a .pit file). In ODIN i put the .tar file under PDA and click start. Once that is done I can download the bootloader and flash that via ODIN. Is this correct?
yeh
or you could use rom manager to flash whichever package you want after odining the light version instead of flashing the bootloaders
dont do it
I just went through hell flashing that rom and even BRICKED my phone. (well semi-brick, none of the buttons worked) I made the same mistake as you. Dont use the Simply_Honey_3.8_LightOdin file, use the one that is named simply_ODIN_HEIM . The light odin is bull****. Didnt work for me. I dont even want to guess why...
Good Luck!
Remember to open the .zip and extract the .tar, zip's cant be flashed in odin

Buddy i already told that 7zip just puts in tar format but do not convert the files in the tar components(Mdem, etc)
You might explain what you are trying to achieve by putting a zip into a tar .
Are you trying to make a CWM zip file flash-able via Odin .
jje
Can it be done ?
Lol, that sounds cool. Anyway, I think I'll keep flashing tars with odin and zips with CWM because what you sugest scares the **** out of me. Anyway I'll keep reading this thread out of curiosity.
so your trying to make an update.zip file into an odin.tar file to flash in pda?
I think he ment if you download (for example) new clockwork recovery version in zip format (ment for flashing thru phone recovery) can it be transformed into .tar (ment for flashing thru odin) !
I would also like to know this.

Tar To Zip
I dont know why you are trying to flash a zip via odin by converting it CWM works just fine if u have the latest kernel. I did find some old cwm kernels were not seeing zip files on my sd card make sure you have the latest. From here K13 or k14 at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399 bottom of the page worked for me.
im curious about this, ever since i rooted and flashed my kernel, i cant properly install ANY CWM roms. on aborts drring verification. I was consierding repacking the ZIP and flashing with ODIN.... just annoying i cant flash any of my roms
Thats usual if CWM is 3e not 4e .
jje
I would also like to know if its possible to repack cwm .zip file into ODIN .tar?? Why? I dont want to have root. I tried with yaffey-v0.2 but for now, no luck.
Only problem is to make a working system.img. Tar package can be done with commands in cygwin or in Samsung tool kit...
Help anybody??

You are in the S2 Forum here. Which version of odin and which FW are you trying to flash? Whats the error message you get?
Yes it can be done and it's pretty easy to do. Google is you're friend. I've converted devil recovery and also modems and all work fine with odin.

[Q] How can i flash a ROM if I formatted my S2?

Just flashed the cf-root kernel
Went into recovery...
Formatted phone, accidentally didnt click update.zip
I then rebooted my phone... and of course i cant boot into anything because i formatted the internal storage.
Can i access USB storage? and then my custom recovery?!?!?
(I can only access download mode!)
OR
Any way to flash a ROM onto my phone via ODIN or other software???
Im stressing out as i cannot get into recovery (only download mode) HELP!
I'm sorry, but I can't understand your question.
If you're able to enter in download mode then you have no problems. Run odin and flash any firmware as *.tar or *.tar.md5 file(s). And... What do you mean that you've formatted the phone? through recovery you can do: factory reset or format some partitions - nothing else. So if you have a CWM backup on sdcard you just have to flash any stock firmware via Odin. then you flash CF-Root kernel, then enter in CWM recovery and restore your backup. No worries
p.s. my salutation to Ozzie. I was over there many times

I have wiped all my data via the recovery, the phone wont boot.
i can get into recovery and download now.
i try to install CM7 via my recovery and i even tried to restore my stock backup it keeps saying .md5 fail operation aborted (or something), can you link me to a .tar file and how to use it?
Im guessing i just click PDA then select the .TAR file then click start when my phone is in download mode?
KF3 kernel too :/
Im so lost.
Ok, look at this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
You have to download any firmware you like, then you flash with 3-files: PDA, PHONE and CSC. you don't use PIT file with re-partition. Then in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399 you can find CF-Root kernel for your firmware revision and flash it as *.tar (PDA). That's all.

[Q] Flashing stock zip via cwm from CM9

Hi all, thanks for viewing this thread
- I flashed my friend's Bell SGS2 i9100M to CM9 a while back, but now he wants to go back to stock and needs to make use of his warranty because of the battery charging problem even when it's is not plugged in
- I need to flash his phone back to Bell stock firmware UGKG2, but I do not have the necessary firmware (PDA) .tar file to flash back to stock via Odin. I've checked Intratech's thread but multiupload is down so I cannot download the .tar files
- However, I have the stock ROM in .zip file, the kernel, modem and CSC in .tar file
- Unfortunately, I did not make the nandroid backup before flashing CM9 on his phone
- I currently do not have his phone with me, but he will be coming over in a few hours
So my questions are:
1) Is it okay to just flash the stock ROM .zip file via recovery from CM9? (After the standard procedures of wiping system, data, cache, etc.)
2) Will the CM9 kernel recovery flash the stock ROM .zip file? I think it might give some e: (some sdcard) error, I'm guessing... If so, will flashing a custom Gingerbread kernel then flashing the stock ROM .zip file via CWM work?
3) If 1 & 2 don't work, does this mean I absolutely have to flash back to stock via Odin?
I've also got an usb jig prepared
Thanks in advance

Hey,
like u said, the .zip includes .tar files.
.tar files always must flashed via odin!
Only way to to it via phone is using odin on phone, but I'm not up to date how is the status and if it's really working.
So to be sure:
1) make a full wipe (like u said above with formatting system, cache etc.)
2) Put files in Odin and flash
3) Flash cf-root or kernel to get CWM back (if u want)

Oh ok. Didn't read carefully, sorry.
So dunno where u got it from, but if it is a source u trust, it should work.
... should be like flashin CM or any custom Rom
Much success!

How to flash an image kernel to S2?

As the title state, I have search in the internet and found lots of tutorial about flashing a .tar framework to the phone.
However, the ROM that I downloaded from xda was just a .zip which contains an .img kernel.
How to flash the .img kernel to my phone then install the zip from SD card?
What do you actually want to do? If you want to root your phone, download a kernel file (there are threads about it), and flash it with Odin.
If you want to flash a rom, you have to install a .zip file through CWM, no other kind of files.
If you want to flash a kernel (and you have a rooted device), you also have to flash a .zip file through CWM.
Thanks for your reply. I know the steps of installing a new ROM. However, I used to boot the phone into flash mode and use Flashtool to flash the kernel which extension is .img. But for S2 it doesn't contain flash mode and seems I can't use flashtool to flash the kernel. If I can use Odin to flash a kernel with .img extension rather then a .tar extension? Also when I boot my S2 into download mode and connect to my computer, Odin still cannot detect the phone. If there is any "download mode" driver that I need to install or just use the normal Samsung driver ? Thanks a lot.
PS: Since the debug mode is working when I connect my phone to the computer I am sure I have installed a driver.

So I assume your phone isn't rooted yet, right?
For using Odin: there are plenty of guides in the General Section, or even on google. But to actually use it, you have to install Samsung Kies first, to get the correct drivers.
After it, you can uninstall it, because otherwise Odin won't work (but that's all written in the guides).
When your phone is rooted, you can simply flash a new kernel (.zip) through CWM.
