I've never owned a HTC device to the point where I've needed to root. How hard is it to achieve root once it's out? Would it be easy to brick the device? I've been waiting for the nexus but at the same time this device really looks great. Deal breaker for me would be how easy would it be to root in the future, and how easy it would be to not brick the device.
P.S. Will this phone receive a lot of development? Hoping maybe CM and other ones? I know it's to early to say, but I don't want an option of two roms like I did with my Droid charge.

Once root is achieved, the process is typically pretty easy. Also, changing ROMs has been a breeze with HTC, especially compared to what the Samsung people have had to go through (speaking from experience with my wife's captivate).
I've seen several Incredible 1 and Incredible 2 devs posting in here so I'm expecting some...... Incredible development for this device.

There is no guarantee that the phone will be rooted but due to the interest and the people working on it I believe it will happen. Just may take some time. Couple weeks a month, who knows.
As far as bricking your phone it is unlikely but does happen on rare occasions especially when the instructions are not followed to the letter.
I know atleast 3 or 4 devs already have basic ROMs ready to roll when we do get root and I see many of my friends from the Incredible forum in here now so I don't think this phone will be ignored.
I for stock have a stock and de-bloated ROM ready to go and started my typical theme-ing and I expect a lot of good tweaks to any already current Sense base.
If that is a big concern for you then wait and see what phones get root and ROMs then decide based on that.
Well I'm in no rush to have root asap. Just hoping I don't get locked into a device that can't achieve it. How long did it typically take for the TB to get rooted? Is the rezound similarly locked down the way the TB was?

Seems like thunderbolt root as day one or close to it.
I believe that was a very lucky circumstance though.
if you look at the CM devices list you will see that most of them are HTC so there is an excellent chance it will be rooted and i have seen from the incredible forums that lots of the devs are going to the Rezound and the incredible had tons of roms
I'm under the impression that S-Off and/or rooting void the warranty, yes? Soft-roots get around it by resetting at each reboot, right?

TB was extremely fast, HTC left a big hole in their security on that phone and it was a quick exploit. The Incredible is a better comparison in my opinion, it took ~2 months to be unlocked, but it did have perm root more quickly if I remember correctly.
It is possible, though much less so than the Razr, that it will never be unlocked. Its a gamble you either have to take or you might look at waiting for the Nexus. If the Rezound never gets unlocked, I don't think we'll ever see another unlocked phone on Verizon as sad as that is.

Both void the warranty. Usually, it is very easy to roll back and be almost completely untraceable. I've sent multiple rooted and unlocked phones back to Verizon for warranty work (not software) and they never knew.

well i finnaly got sick of being throttled by t-mobile. so i decided to go out and buy myself an evo 3d. seeing as how it was the same thing as my htc sensation for the most part. got it home, come to find out some stupid update that i didnt even do prevent me from using the revolutionary method to get s-off. soo i went to the htc site and found out how to unlock the bootloader. after about 2 hours of bull ****ting. and like 3 hours of just downloads (thanks to t mobile for throttled data) i got that. but s is still not off. wtf mates?! if there is any way to get s-off like i had on my sensation let me know please!!

Sorry, man.
You won't be able to get S-off after using the HTC ethod BUT!, big BUT! :
You can still accomplish everything you'd want to, root-wise.
There are workarounds for everything, that work.
So you'll still be able to Flash a custom Rom, a kernel, a Radio, with full root...
You just have to do a couple of more simple steps and use the bootloader for a couple things. There are threads in the Dev section that can walk you through it. (edit: like this one, lol:http://forum.xda-developers.com/sho...Recovery + Root + Flash Ur Ass Off! [9.11.11]
So basically the S-on you see isn't really that "on" as you might've initially thought.
That's a good thing, man.
LIKES:
drinking water, smoking flower, and avoiding the giant.
yeah.
I'd rather not use the htc method at all. I liked the ability to just flash custom roms or kernels from my phone and not have to be attached to the computer.
HTCs method allows things to be done. Its just not a great way of doing it.
I'm hoping that alpharevx and unrevoked are continuing to work on updates to the revolutionary tool they released earlier this year.
yea true that. im tempted to do an insurance claim on it. just get a new one and start over
how would you go about doing an insurance claim?

I don't understand why people can't just wait on root. Maybe I never used root to its full potential but jeez, it ain't something we can't be without. Root Will come for ur version of hboot just like it did for all of us.
Not a personal attack on u op it is just a general opinion of mine. I waited with no problems from launch day to get root. Then two-three weeks after teamwin came out just to watch for bugs. It's nice to have all the customized roms and all but really what does it do for u other than free tether.

You clearly have absolutely no idea on the capabilities of a rooted phone. Don't fill this guys head with your misguided opinion.
I personally feel they will release and updated version of Revolutionary . The only reason I say this is mainly due to two factors . One I have seen numerous posts regarding the HTC method not working all the time and having to RUU the phone back just for the damn thing will work . Second more and more phones are now showing up with 1.50 Hboot on them . 1.30 and 1.40 is now quickly becoming a thing of the past . Just like with unrevoked an eventual exploit will be found and hopefully Revolutionary will update accordingly . Hopefully .

The real payoff is when a new version of android is released! And you get to use it for months before unrooted people!
I love root access to death and thoroughly enjoy tweaking my phone. But from launch day to when revolutionary hit I was forced to be stock. This was the first phone that I've had/used that was absolutely fine stock. It's fast, smooth, kick ass battery and everything worked great(GPS etc).

That would be just a wasted effort. Waiting on a different unlock just so your warranty with HTC won't be voided is nonsense. In my lifetime i never, ever used a manufacturer warranty on a cellphone when most people carry insurance.

Admittedly, it would be a waste of time, but it's not completely absurd to this that some people may still want an unlocked bootloader without HTCDev.
In my case, I got my phone set up the way that I wanted it before regaw_leinad got his rooter finished and before flashable modswere out. As of now, I don't want to go through HTCDev unlock and lose my non-backed up data. I didn't wait on the Regaw rooter (or unlock it myself) because I didn't want a new ROM on it anytime soon. Now that flashable mods are out, I wish that I would have unlocked then.
All of that said, I don't consider finding another exploit a priority. Devs shouldn't worry about it when it's done for them.
I'll bite the bullet and unlock it eventually.

[BL] Unlock without HTCDEV
Sent from my HTC One X using xda premium
The HTC Dev unlock method for the EVO3D was balls. It didn't do the trick and you had to spoof everything through Fastboot (cabled into your computer). That is a much more technical route and more dangerous for noobs. Also the recovery put on didn't always stick.
This time however with the E4GLTE the HTC Dev unlock is great and has provided everything you need to get rooted. There is a nice automated .exe (one single download) that will do the entire process for you. Takes about 10 minutes. Pretty sweet and you even get the super user apps pushed etc.
I've been kinda hesitant to unlock because of the warranty void, but a method like 18th.abn's method makes this noob even MORE hesitant! Unlocking my original evo 4g made this noob very nervous a couple years ago, but I love flashing roms and would really like to see what kind of performance can be unleashed on my new evolte...
There is also a one click method available now.

The DNA is an awesome phone; however, if your phone comes with the newest update from HTC on it, be aware, there is currently software-based (free) method to unlock bootloader or modify the phone at all. Users with updated phones that were not previously unlocked have had to resort to JTAG service (something like $45 plus shipping) to have the phone S-OFF'ed (Radio S-OFF - Means you can flash whatever you please (even more so with the engineering bootloader flashed)).
If the phone prompts you for an update, DON'T DO IT! If the phone is already updated, you either wait and hope for someone to find a vulnerability, pay for JTAG service, or use the phone stock (still a good phone, but no root).
Good luck!

Root/Bootloader status:
firmware 1.x - fully blown open
firmware 2.x - locked tighter that a dolphin's butthole.
It will probably come with the 2.x software. I would recommend using the JTAG service provided here:
http://mobiletechvideos.mybigcommerce.com/htc-droid-dna-dlx-jtag-s-off-modification-service/
Difference between a nexus and the dna... A world.
The gnex was made to open from the beginning. Running one fastboot command opened the entire floodgate, plus odin is an awesome tool for samsung devices. HTC devices have more parts that need to be cracked to have the same openess as the nexus. Right now 2.x firmware means you are running stock only (no root or anything). I'm coming from the gnex and was willing to pay for the jtag service because although I love the dev's work on this phone, I don't want to rely on them for everything.
Hope this helps.
Alright now what about things like supercid or HTC dev. Also if we can unlock the boot loader then why is s-off important. Or can we not unlock the boot loader on 2.xx

Like other post, i would say know that you will not have root for a bit and cm 10.1 is not done yet...but will be soon. You can go for JTAG or stick with stock or use nova launcher temporarily. The battery life is pretty decent but nothing crazy 4 hours of screen time-ish on stock. i usually get enough battery for 1 day and a few hours. Oh, fastboot will prevent a full restart of your phone so might want to disable that...and yea just look around settings. there are ways to increase battery and stuff. for example, there is a settings in wifi that allows it to auto turn off and use data unless you start using your phone. I think its a great device even through its a bit big for my taste, and i don't like stock much. Hope you enjoy your phone! I can't wait to get root and cm 10.1 on my phone. ^_^

Same here. I love CM and AOSP/AOKP, but I tire of them pretty quick. I honestly don't understand the HTC Sense hate some people have. If it was that bad then everyone wouldn't be trying to find widgets that looked like the sense widgets on CM/AOSP. Sense is a really nice looking UI and their widgets are second to none.

The best we can hope for out of future updates is that they have a vulnerability that's easier to find than whatever's still waiting to be discovered in ME7 (if any such vulnerability is hiding there).

You do realize an exploit similar to Loki would do the same thing an unlocked bootloader can do?

Yes and you do realize me winning the Powerball 25 consecutive weeks is more likely?
I believe in the devs here, many are working on it and too much time has passed w/o results, I believe if some exploit were possible it would have been found by now.
Sorry to be pessimistic but I think Samsung got it locked permanently and forever and, sorry to say it, but this probably means all future devices will arrive permanently locked down. :crying:
I'd sure love to be wrong about this.....

the motos got unlocked over 6 months after release, and that was considered by many to be completely impossible. Seeing this phone is more popular I think the chances are better, just will take time!
I put in an RMA with Negri electronics, and they're going to exchange mine for an MDK phone. Really should have done my research before updating...
Review is not the best, but al least we can the see the next big thing.

That's too bad.
Well, not what I was hoping for. But, they say that about the G5.
All I know is that Sammy makes it hard as frick to root their phones, so I'll most likely stay with HTC.
^^^^^ while I agree with sticking with HTC, what, on earth, gives you the impression it's hard to get root on Sammy devices. My experience with GNex, and all I've read, shows sammys are the easiest to root.

Probably wouldn't have mattered... you know... considering the kid's first and last name were on his Youtube and Twitter.

Bro....
My brother has the GS4 through Verizon, and there are like 6 different versions.
Rooting wasn't the issue, as I rooted it for him easily. The issue was "bootstrap", "Safestrap", "modems", and other terminology.
Not what I'm used to. He's rooted, but you cannot flash AOSP ROM'S with their locked bootloaders. You can only flash stock ROMS, and you have to use "Safestrap", which apparently makes multiple partitions and you have to keep your original stock ROM.
And then there is Loki, and Odin, whatever the hell those are. I'm guessing for unlocked bootloaders, but I haven't got that far yet.
Friend of mine from work blames Verizon, saying they try to seriously lock down their phones.

That's a Verizon thing... I have a sprint gs4 and it was ridiculously easy to root. Took me all of 2 minutes, it took longer to download the files...

I don't know about Samsung devices (on Sprint) but I know rooting my HTC wasn't too bad, but flashing it was a different story.
I'm not sure how much Truth is in that whole story. I mean, who can be THAT foolish? If it was me, I would make sure hat my kids don't even talk about it at school. Shoot...I might not even tell them.
Furthermore, whether this is true or not, this still provides HTC with premature feedback from users who want to see what the M8 will look like. While it is too late for them to make physical changes to the phone, at least they can try to make a few software changes to the phone. For example, I'm sure that someone is going to criticize the camera app. Based on the general consensus, they can make the needed modifications. This video has brought much attention to HTC, whether negative or positive, and there's nothing that good ol' Sammy can do about it.
Did I mention that this is FREE advertising? That's something that HTC never did very well with, and funding has a lot to do with it. I'm not saying that this story can't be true, but I certainly feel that there are more factors at play under the hood.
And to add to those who have said that Samsung is difficult to root, I beg to differ. Once I downloaded the correct files to the computer, it took me 2mins to root my wife's GS3 with an auto root tool. I had to do a lot more work to root my EVO. Mind you, I'm not saying that my EVO was difficult to rllt, but i also had to obtain S-Off in a separate process. You just have to root a Samsung and you're good to go.

They didn't, he made that up along with the other lies on his twitter after the video was traced back to him. His father works for a company that does soil testing (http://tsccorp.com) and his mother is a school teacher. I doubt that either would have access to the phone through their work.

I don't know who he got it from, but it wasn't one of his parents. Could be another relative, friend's parent, etc.
