[Q] After 2.3.3 16GB SanDisk MicroSDHC no longer recognized - XPERIA X10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Kind of a newbie here so I apologize if this should go somewhere else.
I have searched and looked through other areas on the forums for anyone else having the same issue or a solution. I don't find much on microSD issues for the X10.
I'm wondering if anyone more experienced might know why after updating my X10a to X10i_3.0.1.G.0.75_GLOBAL-GGL GENERIC 1232-9897, the 16GB SanDisk Class 2 MicroSDHC is no longer recognized.
It worked fine previously.
I've tried formatting it FAT32 with default allocation size.
A 2GB card works fine.
Any ideas?

Get a free partition manager, than, format in FAT.

Thanks for the suggestion
I was able to make a 4gig FAT partition work but didn't want to loose the other 12GB.
I downloaded MiniTool Partition Wizard and created a 14.83 GB linux swap file partition. When I put it back in the phone it recognized the whole partition as unreadable and formatted it automatically.
It works now. thanks for the reply.

formatting mmc

can anyone please tell me how to format mmc card for xda...there's 3 options in win xp ...fat32....fat...ntfs....i cant format it from the xda , keep getting error code 31.....an error occurred while formatting the storage card folder...........thanks
Try formatting to Fat or Fat 32, however if the xda wont format it there may be a problem, make sure the "lock" switch is in the off position. I have had a problem with sd cards before, what I did was a sd backup from the xda, it then seemed to work ok, just deleted the backup and it worked ever after.
theres no lock switch on the mmc card...i've tried storage tools and flash format...the card must be buggered
i have a different problem, but im sure its connected to the formatting somehow! my card only fills up HALF way!
there is 40% more room availble, all scans prooves this, yet i cant add anything to it, im thinking, its the way its formated, was there a 'directory' limit to how many files that can exist in root?
and wasnt it related to the type of formatting? so my question is...
which format/cluster/ect... is best to fully use a 256 card? and 512/1G.?
Hello,
I actually started a topic last week concerning the same thing. i'm copying bits and pieces of it here; it also helps address your concern about which format to use and the sd card limitations. the first point below address which format you should use for the sd card; in this case use FAT. by the way, i use an sd-card reader (usb plugged) to format the card; it shows up as "removable disk e" in my laptop's window's explorer.
1) i'm using a 512 mb card; i was having some difficulty because the memory of the card would only go up to around 300. at first i thought there was a problem with the card itself so i had to constantly erase the contents to make mp3s, files, pics, mpegs, etc fit. then i stumbled upon the pc command for formatting disks; there were 3 options to format the sd card: FAT, NTFS and FAT32. when i used fat32; the behavior was the same and the memory usage would only go up to 300 max. when using ntfs; my xda2 refused to recognie the card (it wouldn't show up in the explorer app). when i formatted using FAT, everything was great. i can now use the sd card to it's limits and am no longer restricted to the 300-mb trouble i was having.
question: what's the difference in the 3 formats? i don't really know but obviously using FAT format was the best thing to do, but what's with the other formats?
2 cents worth.
cheers mates

thanks Robson...but i have sent to back for a replacement....i tried it in my reader but the pc could not see the sd card...so i went out and bought a 128mb card while i wait for the new one to come....had no problems with the 128 worked straight away
thanks for the tip - from now on FAT is to be my solution
one more thing to add, I do have 256MB SD card on my XDA I and WM2003, ver 4.0.21
I can use my 256MB card to the full limit, the card has been formatted with CnetX format utility (www.cnetx.com) with FAT16 and FAT32 and apart from the fact that content has been missing from time to time, so I had to re-load the files ... when I locked the card, everything is fine now
regards,
monika
today I have tested sandisk 512MB SD card ....
I am allowed to fill it up to the full limit of roughly 484MB
I am curious about the other thing .... buying 512MB SD card for its prce it's almost a rip-off and you get only 484MB in return, I remember old times back with IPAQ + PCMCIA sleeve with inserted flash card 1280MB of sandisk - the size written on the back of the card WAS EXACTLY matching what PPC2002 was showing .... 1280MB
to me it seems like either different "disk geometry" or disk format - can anyone explain it to me pls

monika

Problems partitioning SD card

Hey everyone,
I have a problem with partitioning my SD card on my phone. Im using the RA-hero-V.1.6.2 recovery image with my Hero.
Using a 2gb SanDisk microSD card, i create a 256 mb swap, 512 mb A2SD, and the rest should be fat32.
But during the formatting the progressing dots simple freeze and i can do nothing but pull out the battery.
I have been searching all over these forums to find someone that experienced something similar but to no avail... I will try partitioning it with Paragon Partition Manager using a cardreader when i get home.
Is the order of the partitions important?
Cheers SQ
Solved it. Proved to be a defective sdcard. Probably some bad blocks or something.
All good

[Q] What Format should a SDCard be in?

So I figure some people have purchased SDCards other than what HTC provided with our phones...
My question is: What format (based on card size) should we be using?
I had my SDCard (16GB Patriot Class 10) from my Incredible formatted as Ext4 which was causing me a major headache when I wanted to do a Nand Backup. My AmonRa and Clockwork could NOT mount the sdcard. Took me forever to remember that I had formatted it differently. I put in my old 8GB card that was FAT32 and all of a sudden, I could successfully do a Backup.
The catch is that since I am using a 16GB card, when you format (NO Quick Formatting I know) you have multiple options for Allocation Unit sizes. What size should be used?
Reason being is that I formatted the 16GB to FAT32 and default was 32kilobytes as the Allocation size and still I cannot mount the card in AmonRa.
Please help. Thanks.
I have the identical card I believe and I was using Fat32 Default allocation (which ends up being 4k I believe).
Also why were you using ext4? You do know you can partition your card so that you have both right? I can't think of a reason why you would need a 16gb ext4 partition.
What about a 64gb card? I read that someone put one in and had the phone format it and it works fine. No idea how they formatted it, they didn't mention it, so I didn't know there were options until seeing this thread. Got a 64gb card for xmas and would like to pop it in and load it up! Thanks.

I read elsewhere in the Rezound Accessories forum that if you format a 64g card FAT32 the phone should be able to handle it.

Need help please. Can't format 64GB SDXC as FAT32 and get full size

I'm having an issue and can't get my SD card formatted to FAT32 and see the whole 64GB or 59 as it's reported.
I have tried GUI, i've tried windows, i've tried minitool and the walkthrough for formatting to FAT 32 using diskpart, but none of them have worked.
It formats the card into fat32 fine, it's just i can't see the whole memory, it's reported as 27GB instead of 59GB
Does anyone have any ideas please? I've searched and searched and all of the techniques work but just don't show the full size of the card.
If i was to format into exfat then i automatically get the full size, 59GB straight away, no issues, formatted by the phone, works every single time.
I simply can't get it to format to FAT32 and get my whole card.
This is literally driving me nuts and at the moment i'm sat here with a non working phone and a card with nothing on it, so i'm open for ideas.
I've tried EASUS, mini tool, GUI, diskpart, windows disk management, formatting via windows.
Any help would be great.
PS: Please don't reply with a link because i've probably already read and tried it, if someone has the time to help me then great.
Cheers.
UPDATE: I've been using the SDXC plugged directly into an old multi reader. Could this be the problem? I'm going to attempt to try again after it's finished with this format, in the reader it came with and see if that helps any.

Partitioning a SDHC 32gb card

Hi.
I'm trying to partitioning my sdcard to do the link to it and expand my storage capacity.
But I'm having a problem that when I made the procedures in my 32gb SDHC card, I can't get it right. Link2SD always get the invalid argument and the mount can't be created. I tried all the solutions that I found on internet before getting tired. So, I have this 2GB normal SD card and I did the procedure on it just to check if the problem was on the carrier and worked fine.
So, I wanna know if the problem is that the tutorials and workaround that I found over my searches doesn't work fine on the SDHC cards or if I'm doing something wrong.
My 32gb card function normally as storage for data and stuffs like this, but I couldn't partition it to use for the real purpose.
Thanks in advance for the help,
