This worked for me
1. Unplug the USB cable
2. On the cell phone, dial the following number: *#7284# Once the last # is hit, the PhoneUtil application is launched. Choose USB -> Modem and then USB -> PDA mode. The good mode should be PDA. Even if the mode is PDA, switch to Modem and then back to PDA.
3. Plug the USB cable.

thanks alot mate .. it worked

@teenvista, Thanks a lot! That worked. Samsung should be ashamed of themselves for making their users go through such obscure steps to get one of their flagship phones working with their own software.

Ok, It got solved yesterday this way:
You do not need to reinstall drivers on PC.
You do not need to reinstall ROM or anything on your phone.
You do not need *# special codes.
You do not need a new cable or change USB port or change your phone for a new one.
It seems to me that somehow (probably for debugging, connecting and disconnecting several times) the phone locks itself in a state where it is unable to connect again through USB although it charges.
So how did I solve it? I executed this actions several times even in different order some times: disabled debugging, disconnected cable, restarted phone, connected cable, (still not recognizing), tryed to USB Theter (even when the option was disabled), reenable debugging.
Out of nothing i noticed the USB icon was there again in my phone and i was able to debug copy files etc again.
I tried disconnecting and conneceting again and it kept working correctly.
I hope this helps someone else with the same problem and probably someone fixes the bug on the OS.
Cheers!

Galaxy S2 no longer detected by computer via USB

As per the title, device manager doesn't change when I plug the phone in, tried two different computers and two different cables, flashed the stock firmware back, and still nothing.
It charges when I plug it in and SOMETIMES brings up the MTP-Initialization logo thing, but never gets any further.
Is my GS2 goosed yet again?
Edit: Tried on my PS3 as well and still charges, but won't ask to mount the SD card or anything, so I'm back to my trusty HTC HD2, wondering whether I should sell the GS2 once it's repaired and get a Galaxy Nexus...
Hah, another HD2 veteran, it's like everyone from the HD2 forum is now here... even the devs. Anyway, may be a stupid question, but are you always trying with the same USB cable?
Disable usb debug mode
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
Tried two different cables as stated in my OP, and it doesn't matter whether USB Debugging is on or off. I'm taking it back to the service centre after work today, and I'm probably going to sell it after.
I've had the camera go.
I've had it not vibrating at all.
I've had problems with spots on the camera lens.
I think I'm going to put some money to the sale of it, and get a Galaxy Nexus, hopefully the built quality will be at least a little better...
Solution is in the phone
Dear All
Following are my observations and possible steps to
1. When the phone is upgraded to Android 2.3.4 and above (mine is 2.3.6) Kies stops recognizing the phones and USB connection / Serial port connections etc get reset on the phone
2. Even if proper drivers are there on the laptop (mine is Windows 7 64bit) they are not recognized
3. Device Manager shows "unknown device"
4. Updating the driver also does not result in any help
5. solution lies in the phone
a. key in the dialer *#7284#
b. it has 4 option there..
UART (MODEM/PDA)
USB (MODEM/PDA)
c. For USB. select the PDA.if it already selected to PDA. reselect it by select MODEM and then PDA again.. Only change the USB setting.. andthen press back. try reconnect (thanks to napi1 @ androidforums.com/samsung-galaxy-s2-international/447145-sgs2-kies-not-syncing-os-2-3-5-a.html#post3484588)
6. The Laptop will start recognizing the required drivers and install them
also
Phone is not recognized by laptop when it is in USB debug mode, MyPhoneExplorer does not recognize when it is not in Debug mode
Hope this helps
My setup

Helps also on Mac 10.6.8
Thanks a lot mate..I was afraid that i'll have to take it to service center. This helped me.
thanks people!...even i had upgraded to 2.3.6 and usb mode just wouldnt work....
this solved that problem though..
Fantastic tip!
It worked! Now my S2 can be detected by the PC.
Thanks a million!
Doing a factory reset after backing up data will solve the problems.
Still Hasn't worked for me. I'm getting no USB function other than Charge. Its working as if the USB isn't plugged in at all.
Is there anyway of reinstalling the MTP application on the phone? When i find it through App manager its showing with no size and no options inside (clear data or clear cache)
Kies isn't working as far as the phone is concerned there is no USB connection at all.
I know ICS is coming within a few days for GS2 owners, will this clear the problem???
So frustrating.
Thanks in advance if anybody can help

same with mine. mine still doesnt work with the dialer *#7284# and with debugging off or on. ive unistalled and reinstalled the driver serveral times and nothing and this has happened to me on my hero and my sgs2 dozens of times, its so annoying =[. at one point i manged to get all but the usb storage drivers installed. what else can i do ???
Same problem
Same problem here, tried everything (to my knowledge). Someone told me it had to do with the battery overheating because I had use the charger from another phone. For about 2 days my phone would go on vibrate randomly and started the connection process (like a usb cable was connected). It could do that non stop for a few hours. Now that Im back to my original charger, it stoped, but still can't connect to my pc.
I tried on 3 diff PCs with diff version of windows...
I've tried everythin, debug mode on/off, reinstalled Kies, drivers, did factory reset, but nothing.. when i try to connect my SGSII to Kies, it writes "Current connection mode not supported by Kies".. I'm on Lite'ning rom v2.2..
If you're running a custom rom, why would you want to use Kies ? It's awful. There are so many other apps that have the same functionality as Kies (tho granted not one app that does everything Kies does) that work perfectly with custom roms.
Only reason to use Kies would be if you went back to stock because you wanted official ICS OTA or similar IMHO.
I did a backup with Kies, now my all contacts, sms, videos, music, calendar are in this f***in' backup file.. :| I have an awfull headache Or i can do a restore with another app, will it be compatible with Kies's backup file?
same problem. USB connection to PC will only charge. Recently updated to 2.3.6.
Tricky one.
----------EDIT---------
it worked ok after rebooting my PC. Must just be general crapiness.

You said that you tried to root but quit.Hope you didnt try to root with a i9100 kernel on your i9100G cos i dont think they are compatible.Re-install the latest version of kies and if that doesnt work then re-flash your firmware and try again.
well... I have this problem before, me just trying using other port the problem was sloved... (tips: do you unlock you phone before connet to pc?)
Other answer from other forum
Fist:
I) restart you pc,

III) turn off you phone
IV) connect to pc
V) got driver now?
if still cannot.. try
a) wipe data and cache on recovery mode, reboot and try connet to pc agian. (warning: make sure backup you phone fist)
Hope this will helping you xD
by the way.. i did tried to root my phone.. but end up failed.. so i cant do stuff like flashing.. those rooting step for is was too hard for me to understood..
To fix this problem (Your Windows 7 PC Not recognizing your Galaxy S2)
1: Try another USB Cable (my original cable doesn't work, a generic one I had does)
2: My Computer Properties - Device Manager - Uninstall EVERYTHING from the Universal Serial Bus controllers list, then restart. - This fixed the issue for me, my external keyboard and mouse stopped working but I'm using a laptop and once I restarted everything works fine
3: Update your phone's baseband radio (I was on XXKI1 and my PC would only recognize my phone when I was using VillainROM, nothing else, until I updated the radio to XXKI4).

What root method did you try?
I think you can try by type
*#9090# and select "via UART"
then type
*#7284# and select "UART MODEM" and "USB PDA"
Connect your USB cable and it will auto download the new driver to your computer.

Hi!
1. you can go to settings and set your USB Storage.
2. If setting it manually does not detect your phone, then try reboot
3. If it's still not detected, then check if you installed SAMSUNG DRIVER

I have similar problem. I plugged my S2 into my laptop's USB 2.0 port and it shows it's charging thru AC. Same for my Galaxy 3. For iPhone, it detects as connected to USB on my USB 2.0 port. I tried the USB 3.0 port and it solves my problem.

I have frequent driver errors when plugging the SGSII into a Samsung netbook. Sometimes it detects the device and mounts it, sometimes it has a problem with not recognising the device.
I find that going into the windows Device Manager, disabling then re-enabling the device will force it to reconsider the driver situation and eventually it will reinstall the drivers successfully. Sometimes it take several goes but it does work sooner or later. Swapping to a different USB port also works sometimes, but only one of the netbook ports supplies power when switched off so I tend to favour that over the others.
You can also try switching on USB debugging mode on the SGSII (in developer options) which I think makes the phone mount differently and may be more successful using a different driver.
I'm not a computer expert, so I don't fully understand what is going on. I just know it works for me - I have no idea whether this will help you or not but I thought I'd share my experiences just in case...

Hi Sorry for my English!
My Galaxy S2 connects with PC(Kies detects the phone). but its not charging and the status is showing charging......
somebody please help me....
Fixed
To fix this you need to use the Kies software and then boot your phone in Samsung recovery now ( turn off the phone now press middle button + -ve volume key +power button) go to "tools" in Kies software then select "Firmware upgrade and initialization" wait for 30 sec and then disconnect the phone and restart the phone by keeping the power button pressed for 5 seconds till the phone restarts. once the phone comes back up connect the phone to the USB cable and it should work.
Note: This issue happened when i tried to upgarde my rooted phone from 4.0.3 to 4.0.4 and it got stuck at 99%.
Please let me know if the post helped any one else

Help! Odin does not recognise my galaxy ace s5830i

Hey, whenever i go onto Odin v 1.84 and plug in the usb to the laptop and to my Galaxy ace s5830i, the usual connection in the id area does not appear. I have already downloaded and installed and tested over 20 different samsung drivers, but still no recognition is made from odin when the phone is in download mode, and connected to the laptop. However, this has not always been the case, for i factory reset my laptop yesterday, and before the factory reset, i was able to use odin because it was able to recognise my phone.
This is very concerning for me. Before i factory reset my laptop, i was able to unbrick 8 samsung galaxy aces, but now i cannot unbrick any. I have also had different versions of odin such as odin v 3.09 and odin v 4.38 and still i am unable to get odin to recognise this s5830i. If anybody could send a reply, i would be extremely grateful because i am very desperate to get this working again.
If odin is not working because there are some settings on the laptop that need changing, please tell me! The laptop is back to factory settings, so has the settings as it did in the shop.
For ur info: Laptop= Windows 7 HP Compaq presario CQ57
Phone= Samsung galaxy ace s5830i
Please reply asap, i am very desperate!

After about 17 hours of struggling to fix this problem, i turned to automatic driver update, and this fixed the problem. Next time, it would be extremely useful if you replied to this thread. Thanks anyway :good:

I have the same problem, can you explain te me how did u do ?
Connect ur phone to ur laptop via a USB cable when the phone is switched on...u will see driver updates going on on screen... If not go to laptop settings and turn on automatic updates... And try again. Make sure USB debugging is enabled on ur phone in settings, applications and development... Thanks
