A friend of mine got Xperia play and was severely disappointed with the brightness of the screen. When I saw the phone I was able to realize that the auto brightness setting was permanently turned on with no option to turn it off. WTF how can sony mess up so bad?
Eventually after an update the problem was solved and it was possible to enjoy bright and vivid picture even in the dark.
Now I am interested in getting the neo V and I am hearing mixed things about the xperia neo auto brightness thing?
Some reviews seem to indicate that it has and some that it doesnt.
I see some users saying that it was there but some new updates have removed the feature?? I personally cannot live a week with this kind of a feature and my friend lived with it for a lot longer before an update finally came along for it.
So whats the real deal? Does the latest firmware neo have auto brightness that can be turned on and off??
One of my main reasons for getting the neo is that I dont want to root and just want a simple no nonsense smartphone experience and the neo seems like a really good phone for that purpose. But with the kind of blunders the sony support team are doing I am not sure if I should get a sony phone.
I'w got Xperia neo V and sensor is working perfectly fine...

This easily allows you to fix the brightness level at a specified level.
Guess you do not want to root in which case the default maximum brightness is a problem along with the flickering that happens when adjustments take place. If you do root, then the "Disable Auto Brightness" app works perfectly, significantly boosting the screen brightness at the expense of auto adjust which suits me fine as I use a widget for the same.
t3chg33k is absolutely right! The phone definitely has the problem of the "oversensitive", non-deactivatable auto-brightness sensor, which plagues all SE Greenheart models. There is only one way to solve this problem. You root the phone (one click solution in this forum) and then you buy the "Disable Auto Brightness" app from the Market for only 0.69 euros. I did it this afternoon and now I'm enjoying a super bright screen at all times. You can lower the brightness at any time through the phone settings but it never goes up and down because the sensor is deactivated. You can always re-enable it with just a tap on the app icon. It works superbly! Nothing else works!
I do keep auto brightness most of the time so not having auto brightness is not an option either. You are saying that one can easily go back to the "default" way with just a tap by disabling whatever the app is doing?
Does merely rooting a phone cause any of the instability problems that people running custom ROMS have? I love the SE user interface, so smooth and simple I certainly wouldnt be putting a custom ROM.
But this problem and camera compression problem does make me think what on earth are the sony devs upto and what they might end up messing up in ICS.
I guess I might spend a bit more and go for the nexus S. But I so love the creamy white neo V, one of the sexiest phones I have ever seen and I am not normally carried away with a phone's looks. And it's got a very very reasonable price as well for the features.
But why is this still a problem with the neo? The xperia play no longer has the problem, are they working on a fix for this?
This is the problem with buying an unpopular android phone, not much outcry for such ridiculous omissions.
It could never happen for so long on a popular samsung or HTC phone.

SuperDim is free. Also needs root.
SuperDim does not disable the auto-brightness! We want to increase the default brightness! How on earth can someone increase the brightness with something called SuperDim???
A simple rooting, just for the sake of installing the Disable Auto Brightness app, does not cause any problems whatsoever.

it does disable the auto brightness: select lock.
SuperDIM can let the brightness go as far as stock does, have you actually tried the app, it's free, unlike the disable auto brightness.

So far the only thing that I tested that can let the brightness go higher than on stock settings is the Blend_MIUI rom by JasonStein.
Also the button backlights are a lot brighter. Drawback is that the notification LED becomes very weak.
You don't get it...do you???
You are messing up this thread, which can be useful to many irritated SE owners, just because you don't want to spend 0.69 euros for an app!
SuperDim doesn't do the job of Disable Auto Brightness! End of story!

So I thought, I would not be a write hw_config.sh or somewhere else in the brightness value? In principle, the values are stored somewhere on how to reduce or increase the brightness
sorry my bad english.
from hwconfig.sh
echo 1 > $dev/lcd-backlight/als/enable #Sensor on/off. 1 = on, reg 90h
so a echo 0 should disable your AmbientLightSensor ;-)
Sent from my MT15i using Tapatalk
thank you answer, and the brightness can not be increased?
now set hw_config.sh :
echo 1,40,255,35,35,1,100 > $dev/lcd-backlight/als/curve # ALS curve display BL [grp],[Y0],[Y3],[K1],[K2],[X1],[X2]
maybe other value ?
if we are appliing the arc's hw_config file on neo, automatic light switch is appeared.
auto brightness work perfect and fine on EVERY ARC STOCK ROM.
here is what is problem with all of you.
Take scale from 2 to 0 (imaginar).
Neo auto brightness work following 2 - 1.5 - 1 - 0.5 - 0
Arc auto brightness work following 2 - 1.8 - 1.6 - 1.4 - 1.2 - 1.0 - 0.8 - 0.6 - 0.4 - 0.2 - 0
Arc have more steps from high brightness to low brightness and its slower.
Many of you dosent RECOGNIZE that change.
Take your arc in dark room, place one small LED diode on to sensor, and watch how slowly arc get higher brightness.
Also turn off quickly yours LED diodes and watch yours arc brightness droping down slowly.
TEST your self if you dont belive.
Many tried this and report me back that it work, but they were think like you.

It's a one-click (well almost - it asks you to confirm) way to install my tweaks and addons into your rooted ROM without worrying about ADB or Root Explorer. It also has 2 buttons to quickly remount your filesystem as RW or RO, without messing around with commands.
It is NOT ready for mainstream use, so consider it Alpha. It does make backups of any files it touches, but it will overwrite them if you reflash the same file. This will be addressed at a later date.
Enjoy, and let me know if it works (both the app and the Camera mod). You will need < 15% battery to properly test it though and see it still works. Also test camcorder mode please when that happens
Thanks also to [email protected] for his ShellCommand class to faciliate root commands.
The smallprint for VRTweaks...
This app is not for distribution in "ROMs" without prior arrangement with myself. If you wish to share the app, give a link to this thread, or the QR code. The fixes available themselves are created by me, unless otherwise credited, and should not be cooked into ROMs. Android is about understanding what you are changing, rather than copying and pasting files.

What all changes does the apk do to the camera app. Does it give us the option to turn shutter sound off. i would like to test the camera apk, but its a system app, so I prefer to know all the changes before I mode my system.

Allows camera to run at below 15% battery.
You can delete the sound file in /system/media/audio/ui to stop shutter noise

have it any lag in browser? this lag will be improve in android 4... this ture??????
i very love this phone but i Fear!
Hello,
I recently bought an Xperia P. I'm pretty satisfied. The performance is super and you have naver seen such a bright display. The battery drain is pretty high, but I'm used to that from my mini - although I think it has a lower drain than the mini.
The Camera is good, but I expected it to be better. I didn't take many pictures until now, but I would say that it's just slightly better than my 5MP cam from the mini.
Browsing with Firefox is pretty fast.
When the official ICS is out, FXP and AOKP are going to support it!!!
Overall I just love my Xperia P and don't regret my decision.

Xperia P photos:- http://t.co/mVcQqk3T [You will need to be signed into facebook to see this album]
Trust me if you got the settings right the battery easily lasts for a full day with constant connection of mobile data & using WiFI whenever available.
After ICS the score of the device & it's performance will also improve. GB is not completely optimized for dual cores where as ICS is so just wait & watch.
Xperia U has a very limited memory while the P has 2 GB for Applications & 11.26 GB as internal storage which comes in total as 13GB. This total available user memory will also improve with ICS. I own this phone for two months & I am completely satisfied with it as I for me it is not causing any problems.
If you have any further queries then post here.

I am still at 42%
My mobile connection is always on with autosync on except in night with the Sony power saver app.
Got GPS disabled as google maps detect my location without GPS too through network. Use Bluetooth rarely. I set brightness to 0% as soon as I enter my home & back to auto when I leave. [ There is a widget available for this ]
I have my WiFi connected occasionally. I do not use a live wallpaper. [ It will drain your battery a bit more ]
I have avast antivirus, antitheft, whatsapp, viber, tango always running in the background & sometimes Skype. Weather update automatic 1 hour. Have disabled facebook feed retrieval interval as I can easily see whenever I open the app. Though it's notifications are always on with messenger too.
I use internet VoIP services average 4 times for call in whole day of average 5 minutes duration. [ Different service as required ]
Here are my screenshot.

I have turned off the data backup in the privacy settings as it consumed quite a bit of battery & I have my contacts & calendar all safe with autosync & use PC companion for settings backup. In autosync I have my two gmail accounts synced & others have been kept off as it is not necessary.
Earlier I used to worry about battery calibration & percentage a lot but Iearned that the apps that measured it used to eat much battery & I also a read a post here on Xda about modern batteries. It don't remember it's link. Sometimes we think that battery is not charging or it dropped to quickly. Just give it 5 minutes & it will change the percentage to it's true level. This happens due to the room temperature you are in. It stops charging after a certain level even if it is not 100% as set by the manufacturer.
So basically just forget about the battery percentage & whenever you get a chance charge your phone & enjoy your smartphone. Moreover our device got speed charging so it charges superfast when charged via EP850 charger. If you were not supplied that then try getting one.

With this guide, I was capable of having my phone on for 3 days with 1h of screen-on time, and 7h of screen-on time with YouTube and WiFi turned on.
Code:
I WON'T PROMISSE YOU YOU'LL HAVE THE SAME BATTERY LIFE I DID, BUT I'LL GIVE YOU THE STEPS I TOOK TO HAVE IT.
I'M NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY DAMAGE THAT MAY OCCURR TO YOUR DEVICE.
With which ROM/ROMs is this tutorial compatible?
Theoretically, this tutorial is compatible with any TW 5.1.1 ROM based on MotionROM, but it was only tested in Project Lucky.
What do we need?
First, we need to have Xposed Framework installed. We also need root acess, but that comes pre-installed in the ROM.
Apps we need:
BatteryCalibration
GravityBox [LP]
Greenify (Donation Package)
PowerNap
Setting up the apps:
Greenify
First, we'll disable the auto-hibernation, because that's eats some of our precious battery. After that, we need to go to "Experimental Resources" and change the working mode to "Impulsive", then check the "Apply Greenify to system apps" and "Reveal hidden synchronization" (you can check some of the screenshots bellow).
Now, the rest is very easy, I'll give you guys a list of safe system apps to hibernate, and you simply need to hibernate those. And also, hibernate every 3rd app you install (except PowerNap), specially chat and social networks apps, those are the most battery hungry.
Calculator
Cloud Together
Camera
E-mail (both)
Studio
Galaxy Apps
Galaxy Essentials Widget
Gallery
Smart Manager
Google Play Store
Voice Recorder
Internet
Magnifying Glass/Magnifier
Music
My Files
S Planner
S Voice
Samsung Notes
Exchange Service
upday (unless you use the launcher page)
Video
Weather (unless you use the weather widget)
PS: this list was taken from Project Lucky, because it's the ROM I'm currently using.
________________________________________________
PowerNap
This one is very easy to configure. All we need to do is activate "Endurance Mode" and then tap on it. Now we tap on "Activation" and we drag the green ball all the way to the right, and check the "Enable while charging" box (you can check some screenshots below).
________________________________________________
GravityBox [LP]
Now, this one has some more steps comparing to the other ones, but it's very simple too. Go to "Display Tweaks", then "Brightness Settings". Activate it and then put the "Minimum brightness level" to 1 (check the screenshots below if you need).
Configuring the kernel:
If you didn't flash SkyKernel by @SoUnd001, then do it before following the next steps. You can download it here. To configure the kernel we're gonna need an app called Kernel Adiutor. To be able to run this app, we need to have BusyBox installed. If your ROM doesn't come with BusyBox pre-installed, you can install it using an app called BusyBox. So, with the app open, we need to go to the "CPU" tab and change the "CPU Governor" from "ondemand" to "smartmax", then tap on "CPU Governor Tunables" and change the value of "enable_boost_cpu" to 0. Now, we must go to the "CPU Hotplug" tab and change the value of "CPUs Boosted" to 2 and the value of "Boost Lock Duration" to 1. Now, go to the "GPU" tab and change the "GPU Governor" to "simple_ondemand" (if you need some help check the screenshots below).
PS: in some cases, you'll lose root when you flash the kernel. To fix that, simply flash this.
Other tips for a better battery life:
Disable any kind of synchronzation
Disable WiFi, Mobile Data, GPS and etc when you're not using them
Keep Power Saving Mode always on
Keep the phone's brightness at the minimum possible
Keep auto-brightness disabled
Reboot your phone when you unplug it off the charger (connecting to the PC applies to this too)
Uninstall any app related to Facebook, like Facebook itself and Messenger

That happens if you flash the kernel. But to get the root access again, simply flash this.
And btw, thank you for reporting that bug that I known but I forgot. Anyway, that information was added in the thread, so if anyone experience that bug too, they'll have the solution in the thread
But again, thank you

Some tips to battery save:
automatic brightness off...change it manualy because sensor drains batt.
If not bánt fast drain simply disable mobile data ....wifi on 24h US aproximately 8-10mah...useless to disable if not connected at any Network...
With thats, with factory batt u rease circa 4-4.5h of screen on time ,at 75%wifi and 25%mibile data use.
Cpu settings not significantly influent the battery drain.Just overclock or power draining governor mode was result fast drain.
My suggestion is: ondemand or factory...

GPS was not significantly results draining.
Extra sized battery not recommended because kernels not able to correct use of it... just with replace it and restart the phone was resulting longer using time... my 7200mah anker after 3 replace and restart, results circa 3.5days and 10-12 h ours of screen time... of course with higher mobile data using this times was shorter.

Bro, if you simply turn off your phone, you won't receive calls.
Thank you for reminding me of the automatic brightness one, I really forgot about it
And yes, CPU Settings will influenciate the battery a lot. You really don't know how governors work, right? And with those instructions, I disabled the CPU Boost, a function that's not needed in most of the cases. And yes, overclocks and the "power draining" governor aka performance governor drains more, but every bit of battery is precious.
And btw, bro, OnDemand is the factory CPU Governor. Please do some research before posting.
But, anyway, thank you ^^

Nice work bro.
Credits to the developers of the modified GCam project. Please donate to them if possible to keep the development going.
After using it daily on my Pixel 2 XL it is now confirmed working on the Pixel 6.
There are alot of custom options to take that perfect shot available for this modified version, as time passes there will be more releases on the main page on the same site.
Enjoy!

Detailed info I found on Google for the app:
What is the lib patcher?Libpatcher - is a custom setting where you can set all the settings to your liking
Radius Temporal changes the graininess of the image by affecting noise, the higher the image is more blurry and less noise, the lower the more noisy, but more detail
Tone Curve is where you can adjust dark points, white points, shadows, highlights. It is recommended to enable and leave the default values or tweak them (advanced users)
Sharpness allows you to control the sharpness of the image. Zoom in for low-light shots, and zoom out for selfies.
Luminance Noise Reduction is what controls the “graininess” in images caused by high ISO. Decrease it to get more detail at the expense of high noise, or increase it if the noise is unacceptable to you
Color Noise Reduction: Controls color spots. There is usually no need to adjust it as this will not improve the quality, but you can increase it slightly if you see colored spots in the dark. Too much chroma noise can cause a decrease in saturation. Also known as color noise. Be careful with this setting it can mess with the fine details of an image.
Contrast settings allow you to control the contrast of the image. Increase it if you want darker shadows, and decrease it to make it brighter is the general idea. This is again a personal preference
Saturation is what allows you to control the saturation of the image. Increase it if you want more saturated colors in your photos. Obviously decrease if your HDR is getting too saturated. This is again a personal preference
Now there are some advanced settings. These affect the morphological processing. Naturally thats a very basic overview. I took the course while finishing up my engineering degree. It was difficult stuff past the basic level. I wont get into what these settings do beyond a decent generalization.
Warning to all these settings can absolutely have a drastic negative effect on your images. A lot of testing would be necessary by the end userLuminance noise reduction levels
Level 1 (Detail) changes the photo very slightly, slightly smoothing out small elements in the image.
Level 2 (Rough Surfaces) seriously alters the image by smoothing grain
Level 3 (Edges) doesn’t change much. Smooths edges slightly
Level 4 (Smooth Surfaces) radically alters the image by making it posterized by smoothing out large areas of the same color. Avoid magnification over 1.0
Color noise reduction levels
Level 1 (Detail) fine textures, but the same applies to rough details
Level 2 (Rough surfaces) fine textures, but the same applies to rough details
Level 3 (Edges) Edges are mainly defined by the contrast between one object and another
Level 4 (Smooth Surfaces) Smooth surfaces are generally uniform areas of the image. Like wallpaper with few small details
Tips:If you notice a certain color of spots on your low light photos. Check its frequency spectrum. Look where its at in the photo and go to the specific wavelet reduction setting and tweak it. See if you can remove it. More often than not these settings are used to improve astrophotography, low light and high detail images.
My sensor has more higher frequency color noise than others. Ive seen some XDA users where they had to turn down denoise. It really all depends on a lot of stuff. Its fun to tweak and squeeze out what you can.
YMMVWill post occasional pics displaying some of the modded apps performance on occasionWhy didnt your wavelet settings work for me
Factors that affect settings
Your phone
When it was made
The chip itself
The silicon in your sensor
Ambient weather conditions
The image processing firmware on the Pixel Visual Core
Other properties of silicon unique and intrinsic to your device
FAQWhy are your colors listed as frequencies?
Light is an electromagnetic phenomenon and as an RF engineer its easier for me to refer to spectra as a frequency but one could easily refer to it in wavelengths or color (but color wont be accurate as thats up to perception)
What are wavelets?
A wavelet is how we define a center frequency and some deviation. We use wavelets because a color is not just one frequency its a range see here : Spectral color - Wikipedia 10 Its also an entire subset of mathematics used by anyone who works with the spectrum (i.e RF engineers, optical engineers (fiber stuff), biomedical engineers). They are helpful because we can take the average of a color spectrum (say blues) and convolve it with the signal to find the center frequency of blue or the blues in a subset (image). It basically the magic behind the IM processing math.

Just tried a sample of my night time “light bleed” mode and its okay. It still need more tweaking but heres an example of what tweaking your denoise settings can do. The image is far better than a stand night photograph (even with some longer exposure)
Keep in mind you wont remove all the noise. In fact it sometimes takes noise to remove or smooth noise (dithering). Dithering is a process where we add a bit of noise to a data set in an attempt to constructively perturb the signals we want to convolve, isolate and amplify over the average.

I don't seem to be able to associate gcam with the power button shortcut - it always opens the original camera app (or nothing if I disable that one) - what do I need to do?

Unfortunately that's the limitation of the phone, I'm unable to get the modified GCam to work with the power button shortcut either. See attachment there is a Nova Launcher Paid gesture to quickly bring up any app if on the home screen. It's not only this app it can be any one you choose.

All praise goes to the creator and those that put all the hard work on creating it for us. I'm glad you have enjoyed using it.
I forgot exactly where on here I read and applied these settings via lib patcher, but with these settings, detail is far greater preserved than stock cam. there is a bit of noise but the detail preserved is worth it to me. the over the top denoise and sharpening is really evident on pets. give these settings a shot and lemme know if you can figure out how to preserve the detail with less noise!
first pic stock. 2nd gcam w settings posted previous to this post.. heavy noise and detail loss on stock. lil bit more noise but much greater detail preservation.
Can someone explain to me how to restore a xml i saved earlier? Thanks

Stock looks better. Too much noise on other.
even in great lighting situations, the stock cam denoises so much and loses so much detail in post processing.. for me, the little extra noise in low light is well worth it. I'm trying to find some pics of another dog outside and it's really evident how much post processing stock gcam has regardless of available light, but I may take more later. you can always play with the lib patcher to increase/decrease post processing
I have tried to increase the details to the max, and the mod does exactly what it is supposed to do, increases details and increases noise
It is now time to look for the best compromise. But I think the Google denoising algorithm is not so bad, I have seen far worth on Huawei phones
Why on my stock Pixel 6 the lib patcher options don't show up? It needs root?

I am not root. In the settings, goes to Mod Settings and you should see a Lip-Patcher option, above the gestures

Sorry it's completely my fault, I installed the wrong mod now it works except for the faces based autofocus which crash the app. Any workaround for this?
I got it to become the sorta default camera. I copied all the files from the new gcam into the original gcams app folder meaning install new gcam and then copy it's contents over. I
made a backup of the stock camera and opening stock apk now is the new gcam. I am trying to get self illumination working on the face unlock app lol haven't been able to get tnsg working yet. Edit I removed the gcam because face unlock app was messing up.

if you're taking photos of stationary objects, I find the best results paired w the mods I posted earlier, and changing the max amt of frames HDR Enhanced mode uses to 25. then use HDR enhanced as opposed to just HDR+. takes a second to capture won't work well with moving objects but takes a lot of noise out
I tried with Nyolsson's settings and it is a very nice compromise

Info:
This app targets older android sdk in order to control refresh rates without ADB setup or root. Just tap OK the dialog that says "This app was built for an older version of Android...." when opened for the first time. If OK button is not visible, just tap the blank space on the lowest portion of the dialog. If google play protect prompts during install that the app is built for older version of android and doesn't include the latest privacy protections, you can ignore it and proceed to the installation. For privacy related concern, please refer to FAQ No. 3.

120 hz works with psm but 96 didnt worked
Hello. Is it possible to transfer the license from my Fold4 to S23 Ultra? Will I have to buy Premium again?
So 1Hz is still a gimmick from Samsung? Or is it possible to achieve?

Your brightness maybe too low. Try increasing screen brightness a bit. 96Hz usually has a little bit higher brightness threshhold to avoid visible flickers when refresh rate switches. This is set in the device by the OEM depending on the display calibration. This threshold can not be overrridden by an app.

Based on the refresh rates read from the device, 10Hz is the lowest.

Tribal, don't think I remember the reason, but why does the app only allow it to go as low as 10hz, when the displays have been rated for 120-1hz?
Shouldn't it be able to go down to 1hz?

The app just read the available refresh rates that's provided by the device system configuration and just use what's available. 10Hz is the lowest refresh rate available. I don't know exactly why 1Hz is not available. Could be that it's not enabled or samsung could be referring to a different definition of refresh rate for the 1Hz rating - a sort of surface buffer optimization.
I have the feeling that when I set the frequency to 10 min and 120 max, the device starts to jerk. (at the moment when it jumps from 10 to 120 Hz).
Can anyone share the same experience?
Edit:
The problem still exists...
Quick question by the way, what exactly does the "Brightness Threshold" option do? So how far does it affect the Hz?

Unfortunately not and I'm bummed, as I wasn't planning to replace my S21ULTRA (a dumbass dropped a knife on my screen...) and bought the app only 2 months ago.
TBH, this should be like any app you buy from the app store: transferable.
Maybe that's why it's not in the Google play store
Not ready to pay again, looks like the battery improvement is significant enough to render the app less useful than before. Don't get me wrong, still an excellent job, Samsung should pay attention.

If I'm guessing right, the fact that it's not on the store is more about the Android version targeted by the app itself (to access some permissions).
The reason is explained in FAQ#1.
I'm unable to find in the FAQ or threads a way to RESET all the settings so that I can uninstall the app.
If I don't , I have the same refresh rates as with the app, since now they are written via adb.

One question: can we use adaptive 120hz with powersaver on S23U?
Edit:
Its working without Problems on 5.1 with the Dex workaround
hi everyone,
I have a pure technical question.
not only about this application but in general.
if i install an application and then i run the command:
adb shell pm grant _application name_ android.permission.WRITE_SECURE_SETTINGS
#1. what are the chances of having this new application steal personal information from the phone?
#2. what exactly this command do?
#3. can this application "read" users and passwords and then send them out of the phone?
I mention that after i ran this command i disabled usb debug from developers.
thank you and don't blame me for this questions.
