[Q] S2 to Note Backup transfer - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've had a quick look around, this forum and a couple of others and didn't find much.
I may be getting a Galaxy Note in the next couple of days to test it's day-to-day use and how it compares to the S2 and Galaxy Nexus.
If I was to root the Note, how easy would it be to transfer a Nandroid backup from the S2 to the Note? Mainly so I can just pretty much pick up where I left off.
----------EDIT-------
I forgot to mention, I have an S2 as my personal phone just now.

Just back up apps and associated data / SMS / Contacts etc
Can use Titanium backup or one of the many other back up programs.
Another way is to use AppExtractor on a CWM5 Backup but the free version is limited.

So, Titanium Backup works cross device? Does it just use your Gmail address to assess what you've backed up?
I'll have a look into AppExtractor. And see what happens with that...

Titanium works cross device as only takes the application and associated data.
Not a user of Titanium but it works for all and is free.
AppExtractor is awesome as from a CWM5 backup you can restore app data APM SMS without having "extra" backups taking up SD space.

Yeah, I'll definitely see what I can do with Titanium and AppExtractor If and when I get the Galaxy Note.

[Q] Backing Up Apps

I've searched through the forums and tried a couple of apps to backup apps/data myself, but I'd be curious to get some feedback as to what the best backup app is. Most of the postings I've seen mentioned Titanium Backup and My Backup Pro. Titanium seems quite complicated in as much as there are a plethora of batch operation options. On the other hand, I didn't see an option to backup SMS/MMS/Bookmarks/etc. the way My Backup does. My Backup also seems far simpler to use. I guess the real question is, which one (or an alternative) is most accurate or reliable in both backing up and restoring apps and their associated data?

Actually Titanium Backup does save your txt and stuff but you have to save them through the explore option, I have never tried Backup Pro so I can't talk about how bad/good it is compared to TB.
But with Titanium backup you can backup any apk or system settings that are your phone, its actually the best money I have ever spent on the phone. I guess there can be a learning curve but its actually fairly simple to use. I mean there is free version of it, but to really see TB in action you need the "donate" version. TRUST ME you wont regret buying TB.
I use Mybackup pro, and it has been well worth the money I paid for it. I have never used Titanium but MyBackup does all that I need it to.
Titanium backup is by far the best money I have spent ....can't speak for my backup pro
TB is definitely not that difficult to use, I don't use it to back up email or sms just cuz my email (both acct's) are web based and .....I am always that deletes my texts regularly....
though I know you can do it with it.... it does save all my other settings though ....so no resetting up my other apps , other then gmail so that I can download titanium
OK, I've gone with Titanium. It just seems far more flexible and comprehensive and comparison test I have run proved it more accurate. I havent quite figured how to get it to backup sms/mms/bookmarks/etc. but I have the apps part down and it works like a champ. And while I'm on the subject, it's be quite nice if I had a flashable zip that installed Titanium but that's something I have no idea how to do.....but I'll figure it out.
Sorry for this but I have more Titanium questions.
1) If I have A2SD running TB doesn't seem to be aware of apps installed on the ext partition. What's the solution here? Move the apps, back them up, move them back to ext? A configuration issue with TB?
2) Try as I might, I can't seem to get backup of SMS/MMS to work. I backup what seems appropriate but when I restore I get nothing. My guess here is I'm backing up the wrong things or missing something I should be backing up.
Any ideas/help would be greatly appreciated.

The item you are looking for in the Backup/Restore tab is called [SMS/MMS/APN Dialer] storage. If you restore this, a reboot seems to be required before your data is visible.

does app backup and restore save game data?

My Prime is not rooted so I cannot use my titanium backup I was wondering if app backup and restore that came with the Prime will actually back up game data for programs or settings for programs that it backs up?
does anyone know if this works or not?
bump....... no one has used this?

Best way to import SMS into ICS?

I understand GoSMS can backup/restore SMS and so can SMS Backup & Restore. However, I have over 15,000 texts and it takes a while to import.
Going through different GB roms, it's possible to just use titanium backup and restore data from the SMS Storage which also houses MMS and contact info I believe.
However, going to ICS requires using SMS Backup or GoSMS which takes forever. Is there a faster way or is this the only way?
when i went to ics cm9 built in my phone i used mybackup root and everything just worked right (passed over 200 texts) hope it works....its free
here are my ¢2 cents

Never restore system data between different OS versions. This will only lead to bad things happening. Do you really need 15 thousand messages? If you do then bite the bullet and wait while it restores
i dont know, i always used Backup sms and, even if it is slow, it works.
At least i don'l lose any data
guys above are right, you well may run into problems when importing system data into diffrent OS version such as ICS. I suggest to check them out on the PC and save any important data for future reference.
hope it helps...

What is best method to backup and restore?

Almost all my data has been stored by default to my internal storage. Pictures, DL's, I figure I will sync to my laptop and back them up there, but there must be an easier way all you flash addicts are doing it. And TB is still preferred method to back up and restore all apps, msgs and call logs?
Is there a good startup noob guide? Things change so fast around here I never know if the guides are now obsolete.

Clockworkmod recovery......for a complete backup...
and although TB is a great app, it seems to cause as many problems as it solves..
the app pulls data into a fresh build (on occasion) and causes problems when setting up..
I personally load "all" of my apps from the market again, on a fresh rom install....g
Most would store their downloads and pics on the external sd card. Contacts should be made google contacts that way they sync automatically. And Titanium backup works well. You just have to know what to restore. Issues are usually attributed to user error by not knowing fully what they are doing.
Taking everyone's valuable suggestions one step further, send backups from external sd card to Google Drive or Dropbox.

So you change the default settings of where to store dl's and photos every time you flash a new rom?

When I restore I log in to google and get TiBU.
I make sure it knows my backup folder location.
I restore the apps I backed up. Never select restore system apps.
Then I restore sms and calls. When I restored those apps they get their settins restore so I don't have to do anything.
So the only location I check/change is TiBU.
I used to CWM but now I use TWRP for flashing and creating backups. I also use TB pro and I have to say I haven't had any problems but I do only restore apps and their data and nothing else. I also have become a fan of My Backup. I am able to backup and restore how I have my icons saved on my screen. Makes it real easy and quick to get back up and running.

You can save the launcher and it's data with tibu also, no need for a second app...That's what i do
hell some launchers have a backup option built into them.
Serious? Well face palm myself. I never paid attention that TB did.

Just so you know, nothing on your internal or external SD is affected by flashing a ROM. Sounds like you think you might lose your pictures and downloads. They will be safe unless you format them.
OK, so I bought the pro version of TiBu, actually had a tough time getting it to sync with the free version and recognize the key on fresh rom install....
But my bigger problem after rom install hand TiBU restore...I am getting 3 errors and it caused the phone to hang so bad, had to do a factory reset and start from scratch with everything.
1. Calendar sync not working properly
2. Messages sync not working properly
3. Android.process.acore not working properly.
I would love to flash roms more often but dont out of fear of having to restore everything I liked back manually (I have to learn how to backup launcher too BC that is a big time factor in setup after a flash)

The trick is the System Apps. If they're Green then you can usually backup and restore them without any issue. If they're Red then you shouldn't back them up and restores won't be useful.
For some of the Green items (e.g., messages, bookmarks, call log) there's a Yellow equivalent which indicates XML. For these, you should favor the XML since it'll restore across ROMs better.
For all apps, if you switch between ROMs that are extremely different (for example, if you jump straight from stock GB to CM9(ICS) then there can be problems. You can usually get around these by uninstalling the offending app, installing from Play Store and then restoring just the data.

Move Candy Crush from S2 to new S4?

Anyone know how to move the wife's Candy Crush progress from one phone to another.
I've searched and searched, but seems like no one does it.
I'm sure it's just a re-install and a folder data dump, but I'm stumped so far...
use titanium backup to make a backup
and then just copy the backup to your new sdcard/phone and then restore it
Sync it with Facebook...

Yes but backup what folder...
If I sync it to FB will she keep getting messages in her FB wall. That's why she never sync'ed it.

backup the application
titanium backup gives you the option to do that install it from google play
then connect your phone to your pc
copy the folder titanium backup on your sd card to your computer
transfer the folder to your new phone install titanium backup on your new phone
restore it using titanium backup
DONE
That just backs up the application. I already have the apps backed up and re-installed. Plus I can just re-download it.
I'm looking for the progress data. Sounds like syncing to FB is the answer.
Have you tired APK Organize?

No. Again, that does the APK, not the data files.
I was looking for the data files, but it seems that syncing the old phone to FB, then syncing the new one to FB should work.
Hope it doesn't screw up her FB page with junk is all.

Titanium backup can back up the data of the app too (actually does it by default), you just have to make sure to choose restore app and data
Thanks. I'll give that a whirl.
Is there a way to do this to a non-rooted phone?
I ended up just syncing to FB, the levels were restored in the new phone, then logging back out in the new phone. Seems to have worked.
