Copy and Paste??? - Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet

PLEASE tell me B&N included a way to copy/paste in the stock rom... No???

I want to know the same because i will have to return it if not

Ive been able to copy/paste urls by pressing on the text but thats about it

Press & hold method doesn't work?
Even on my rooted phone, cut & paste support seems to be spotty at best. That, and I can't aim worth crap on the 4" screen.

I mean from the built-in stock keyboard when entering text in a text box, there are no options to copy/paste. I know this was missing on the Nook Color, but I figured B&N would have gotten their act together to add that functionality.
To me, this is a bit of a biggie. Not worth returning the tablet, but certainly a major annoyance. I wonder if a keyboard swap will fix it.

Maybe it's keyboard?

Yea its abit annoying. Ive only been able to cut and past from within the opera browser.

I'm using Dolphin HD and the copy/paste isn't working. On a long press I get the Select Text but it won't actually select anything. Anyone gotten this to work? Works great in Firefox but I just don't like it as well for browsing.

I can confirm keyboard swap does not work I tried swype and used their shortcuts for copy paste and select all and it results in a force close. perhaps we can push a copy/paste app from AOSP gingerbread into system/app

Not sure. I don't have the Nook Tablet yet - I hope to get one after Christmas. I only suggested the press and hold (or "long press") as that is what I've sometimes used on my phone. I still find that support for the function varies by app. Unlike Windows where "Ctrl-C" will generally allow you to copy any text that can be selected, Android doesn't seem to have similar functionality. (Then again, my phone is sitting at Froyo so I have no idea if Gingerbread or Ice Cream Sandwich has better support across apps.)

I believe that BN has ripped something for the select/copy/paste actions. My NT FC every time when I try to use these kind of functions supported by 3rd party apps, like keyboards.

We need copy and paste

+1 on the copy and paste needed. I can copy from certain programs onto clipboard, but cannoy copy and paste words from the browsers I'm using (b&n + dolphin hd). Also, I can copy the url from Dolphin HD but it won't paste to facebook (not a big deal).
I can copy and paste from adobe pdf's into OfficePro docs, which is great, but would love to be able to do the same from the online readings instead of downloading the pdf version. I can also use Dolphin to save the page as a pdf and then copy and paste to certain programs, but this significantly slows down my productivity when researching and referencing multiple sources.

Got swype beta working and it has built in copy/cut/paste function:

I am interesting in getting this to work also. I use lastpass password manager, and I am incredibly cripple without copy/paste for passwords.

Thank you for the info. However, I cannot select text in the browser in order to copy and paste. I cannot bring up the keyboard to copy in a webpage, although I can copy and paste what I write in a text box like this. That is useful. However, trying to select all from the Swype keyboard does FC my browser (Dolphin HD).

I haven't been able to copy and paste. If you can, it's only in specific areas (like text input boxes) of specific apps.

Swiftkey free today on Amazon Appstore

As title says, just a heads up to get a great kb for our NC for free today only on amazon appstore
(if you get it and want to thank me you can by sending me the apk since the appstore doesn't work in Canada!!! (arggh)
Just downloaded and testing now. Had been going between the Gingerbread and Thumb Keyboards on Froyo, but Swift does seem to be more accurate so far. Think this might be my goto keyboard.
HOWEVER, the stupid Swiftkey icon pops up on the notification bar. It won't go away-- any way to get rid of this?
The free Swiftkey app from the Amazon AppStore doesn't seem to be a tablet version. It also seems to suffer from the white on white problem.
if someone can send me ?
I would like to try it.
The tablet version is in beta so i imagine once out of beta this can update to it
Not able to see predictive words
I installed on my rooted Nook and it doesn't have the same capability as it does on my phone.
The thing that makes this keyboard so nice are the predictive words above the keyboard. The predictive words aren't showing like they do on my phone.
Are others seeing the same thing?

Canadoc, there's no point sending the apk to you. amazon is drm'ing their apps, so it is locked unless on the same registered device and linked to the amazon account used to download it. i've alredy experienced this fate several times, using the family account to start with, then switching to my private account. have done it several times, with both free and paid apps. the apks are there, but they keep giving errors like "you are not the owner of this apk". perhaps i just need to delete the amazon appstore after the download?
I use it both on my phone and NC. Great keyboard!

Here's what I did to get swiftkey to work:
Using root explorer I made a copy of
com.touchtype.swiftkey.apk
(found in data/data)
and pasted it in system/apps
then rebooted
After that, choose it as your keyboard either in NookColor Tools
or longpress a text field and pick input then choose Swiftkey
Hope this helps

sign up for the beta and download tablet optimized version. much better IMO.

Clearly I am a complete and total moron. I have just spent an hour with three different root file system apps trying to make this work. I cannot do it. The file simply will not copy to the system/app folder no matter what I try. I can copy it to every other folder it seems, except that one.
Root explorer - can't mount the system folder at r/w. I press the button at the top, but nothing happens. The system remains r/o.
SUFBS - Mounts the system folder as r/w. I can create new folders and files in the system folder with no problems. Can't copy the folder from data/data or anywhere else.
Super Manager (hey it was free and I was desperate) - same deal as SUFBS except it did copy the file finally. Gave me an error that I was out of space. I don't see it listed as an APK. I'm clearly f***ing up something ridiculously simple.
WTF am I missing here?
ok gotta resurrect this one.
i paid for the tablet version recently from the android market and it doesnt install on my rooted NC - i rooted my NC using Manual Nooter.
i also cant seem to locate the apk file. anyone know where the apk file is installed once the app is downloaded from the market?

Change Keyboard

I love my new Nook Tablet after sideloading all of my favorite apps...the only thing that I haven't had success with is changing to a third party keyboard. I've downloaded the Thumb Keyboard from Amazon, installed it and see it running, I just can't activate it in the Nook settings. Anyone else have success with this?
I have had no success either. I tried swiftkey and, after downloading the language files, once I try to enable it just force closes. It seems the settings menu has completely removed the option to chose which keyboard you want.
Although (and this may be a long shot), I have an idea. I cant test it right now as my nook is dead and I left the charger at work >.<. Anyway, here is my idea:
root the NT
using a root file manager go to /system/apps
locate the keyboard apk and copy the name. (I don't know if case matters but I would just copy it exactly as it appears)
rename the apk after copying the name to something like (keyboard).apk1
now locate the /data/app folder
locate your keyboard app of choice and rename it to whatever your default keyboard is named
move the file to /system/apps
reboot tablet and see if the keyboard you downloaded sticks.
If this doesn't work, that is why we just renamed the origonal apk. Basically, go back into your file manager app and delete the apk for the 3rd party keyboard then delete the 1 after the stock and reboot and your device should be fine.
This works just fine on my phone (I know it's a completely different animal). If nobody is willing to try it, I will today while I'm at work and post back if it works.

Bah, this method does not work. I didn't snap that my phone had swiftkey enabled already so the LatinIME.apk being renamed had no effect on the device functions. On the nook, I rooted it and then renamed LatinIME.apk to LatinIME.apk1...which means no more keyboard so I cant rename swiftkey. In my infinite wisdom I tried to master reset (using wipe/deregister device in settings). Apparently this does not completely revert to defaults but just wipes user data...so now I cannot login to my B&N account due to no keyboard!
So...DO NOT DO THIS! >.<
Alternatively...once you have root you can push the renamed swiftkey app (or whatever keyboard app) to /system/apps and that MIGHT work...All I know is, looks like I'm returning my device as I cannot do anything with it
Turn off the device. Hold down the N key and Power it back on to do a factory reset.

I actually figured that out just messing around trying to find a hard button reset...this doesn't work either. Apparently a factory reset only resets the factory settings but does not restore the rom to default itself...weird.
hmmm...does anyone know if there is a way to get to adb shell with the device off? or without being able to get into settings...yeah...long shot lol
Anybody had any luck?
Does the same method from the kindle fire work on the nook tablet?

Debugging gets disabled after each boot, so no ADB. I think you are screwed. Perhaps this is a sign that you need to go into a B&N and have them "fix" your tablet. When they pop the secret SD card into it, grab the tablet and RUN.
I found in an old Nook Color thread that the file is saved as com.beansoft.keyboardplus.zip in /data/app.
I had hoped to do this without having to root my NT...love to be able to sideload apps but just don't want to hassle with rooting it.
At this point I think I'll just be sticking to the stock keyboard since it sounds like you have to install the apk in /system/app for it to have a shot of working anyway.
i think kfmethod can work if android versions is same
I have not figured a way to change which keyboard is being used, but I was able to find a way to change to different themes of the B&N Stock Keyboard.
Here's how:
1) Download/Install Anycut from the Android Market
2) Open Anycut
3) Select New Shortcut
4) Select Activity
5) Scroll down until you see Android keyboard Debug settings, choose this
6) Go to your homescreen and click on the newly created shortcut
7) Select Keyboard Theme
8) Enjoy!
I'm rooted and I'm not sure if that changes things or not, perhaps someone can test it out for me?

Nook Tablet SIP Keyboard Switching without rooting
I too am desperate for my Nook Tablet SIP Keyboard to be switchable without rooting. I was previously using windows mobile where you have CTRL+x,c,v,b,u,i,e,y,z, etc -- i used it CONSTANTLY to undo, redo, and most importanly: being able to cut, copy, and paste info form fields.
This is driving me nuts that the standard SIP on a tablet doesn't have such basic features.
I purchased Thumb Board from Amazon (Amazon says it's compatible with Nook Tablet) but I can't execute it... bummer.
After using the hacker keyboard for a day, i found the keys a little too cramped for how fast i type. I ended up just changing the theme to stone and i like it. Im much more accurate with it as well.

I have installed the Swiftkey Tabletx keyboard. It works perfect. No crashes at all.
Instead of having you dig through that entire thread, what worked for me after trying out the different methods listed in the thread.
For stock root:
1. Get anycut from Market
2. Create a shortcut to accessibility and another for android keyboard debugging (the list might appear short, but you can scroll down)
3. Open keyboard debugging and check the box
4. Find the apk file you have for the keyboard(if you installed it from the market, move to system/app and another to your sd card or somewhere safe
5. Install the apk which is in system/app
6. Open accessibility, select the keyboard as input of choice (you might be getting force close errors by now, just keep closing them)
7. Go to the safe spot you saved the other copy of the apk file, install that, and then delete the one in system/app
8. Reboot and you should be good to go
Cm7 Root:
Similiar idea, but instead of having to create shortcuts and you just copy the apk file to system/app and safe spot and then follow the instructions from step 5 and on.
Though I do find that on Cm7, it doesn't let me select the keyboard I want, so you might want to get anycut anyways, but for me, I use SlideIT and when i install it they gave me a little intro and it opened accessibility for me and I changed it from there.
thank you very many!! i love my nt with thai keyboad!!
Q&A it has been moved to.
If you don't mind paying a few bucks for a keyboard, try thumb keyboard. I just switched to it a couple days ago after reading the positive comments about it and it freaking rocks. The ergonomical layout is super comfortable and allows me to type quickly and precisely. Plus the prediction and correction features aren't too bad either.

What is up with the Copy/Paste menu? And default browser issues

I like the default browser but whats the deal with the copy/paste function? You know how you hold your finger on a spot in a text space and that little popup menu with tbe copy paste functions come up? For some reason it isn't working in the dumb mobile facebook inbox messages. I copied a link and was going to paste it into a reply I was writing but that dumb menu won't come up for nothing. Nothing happens. Thats the only text box it wont work in. So... I go to the full version Facebook site (which is zippy btw). Try the inbox there.... I load a message and suddenly it's like THE FORCE is affecting the screen. On full FB inbox message screen, it's like the screen keeps trying to move to the left, and it resists all attempts from you to straighten it to center.. Am i sounding weird or does this make any sense at all?
If you happen to use Swype, you can Swype from the "Swype key" to the letter "v" for pasting what's on your copy clipboard
I've had the same issue with the page constantly moving and not allowing entire sections to be viewed. It seems like it has something to do with the browser trying to format the text for mobile. Usually using Dolphin or another browser and/or turning mobile view off helps.
Whatever the name of the default browser is, mobile mode is off. I have tried Facebook in Opera Mobile. And in Opera on full FB inbox, the same problem happens inside the messages. The screen keeps moving to the left. It only does it inside messages on full version Facebook. Dolphin browser seems to use a ginormous amount of RAM just for small pages. It used over 118mb on google once.. Idk why so much memory usage. The computer never uses that much unless its tons of flash ads and java. Hmm
Is there a shortcut to access copy/paste like ctrl+v? No ctrl key. And I don't use Swype. Thanks for the help.

[Q] are we screwed out of getting copy and paste?

I imagine if the NT is ever getting copy & paste, its be thro an OTA. Id imagine that 99% of you have blocked OTA and the 1% that hasn't are going to be mad when they lose their root.
I have OTA blocked, my revision set to 9.9.9. If they have an upgrade including copy & paste, are we going to be out of luck?
ICS for the NT will probably include it, but until then, you're probably out of luck.
copy and paste
I believe I was able to do so within Opera mini browser...download it and check it out to confirm. Still doesn't help with aweful email app though! Hope this helps somewhat.
Yes, you can copy and paste with opera browser.
There are apps that have usable copy and paste... but I'm assuming you are talking about browsers.
I believe the OP is talking about cross-application copy and paste. We will have to wait for a custom ROM for that.
