So there's a screenshot I just took. I'm not satisfied 100% with it because it isn't perfect. Maybe I have OCD, but I don't like when books don't have covers.
I'm new to e-readers, and I've been trying to find answers for a week, but everyone in this community has an aversion to verbal communication. I don't think it's too much to ask for somebody who's as interested in the Nook as I am who also happens to have a microphone and Skype installed to discuss it.
So maybe someone out there who is like me who has high standards and wants book reading perfection on their device because I'd like to acquire that knowledge and pass it on in the form of a YouTube tutorial video.
I don't trust google because the majority of people say that zSNES is the best Super Nintendo emulator when actually bSNES is factually and scientifically the best Super Nintendo emulator. I'm sick of misinformation, so I need someone who has the best information and is willing to pass it on to me so I can educate the increasing number of people permanently moving over to ebooks.
I'm enthused that I'm going to have a 250$ android tablet. Not so much about the whole "nook" part.
I enjoy my nt for what it is, and while I'm looking forward to rooting it once the devs come up with a less techy way, I think exploiting access to the amazon app store has partially circumvented the need for rooting.
I own a nook color as well, and have enjoyed using these for books, mags, and pdfs for my school. I just discovered the built in dictionary that can be accessed by long pressing a word...didn't even know the NC did it.
You can find/change book covers with Calibre. You can also edit metadata (description, tags, title, author, etc) with it. To embed a new cover, resave the book into whatever format desired. For OCD types, the epub format is documented, and you can use various tools to edit any part of a book.
Google can't make decisions for you. It can't tell you what's "best." Only you can do that. With judicious search terms, it can help you narrow your search parameters.

Hi.
I am looking at getting a couple of Flyers for my small business, but I need something quite specific, so I am guessing I would need an app developed for me.
What I am looking for, is an app that I can use as a job sheet when on site.
It would need to have a template for the job sheet, with areas that I can enter text using the on screen keyboard.
It would also need to have tick boxes for several areas of the service work that has been completed.
Another thing that would be required, is the ability to automatically save to a specific folder on the SD card, using the job reference as a file name.
The final thing, and probably the hardest to implement, is an area for the customer to sign upon completion of the work.
Is this possible, and would anyone be interested in helping out with this?
I think that if the template could be inseted into the app using either an image file, pdf, or some other file type, the app could be valuable to many people considering using a device like the Flyer for work.
If somebody could get an app developed in this way, we would be able to pay something towards it.

Can I ask a few questions...
1. Why an app specifically for the Flyer? Would a web/cloud app do?
Given that you could save to a cloud database rather than an SD card, this would have certain advantages. If this doesn't work for you, I'd be interested to know why not.
Though question 2 might do it.
2.a I get why you may want a customer to sign a screen with a pen as per the Flyer platform. Could they use Evernote to do the signature?
2.b If Evernote would suffice for the signature, why not just use an Evernote form. for the whole app. (Google 'Evernote Form' for details)
3. Personally, I advise avoiding "signing" tablet devices (like delivery pads). The potential identity theft and data protection risks from recording and storing handwriting make me shudder.
A better form of authorisation (imo) would be to complete the form, email a PDF to your client, and have the client reply back to authorize. This is better because the client's email server and your email server will both have a legally enforceable record of the transaction.
I'm interested in your view of this.

I will have a look at the suggestions you made.
The reason we're looking for this app, is to replace our job sheet books, which we take on site with us.
Being able to use the flyer instead, will save us a lot of money over a 2 year period, and would be more convenient than a paper book, which becomes dog-eared, and I am able to print off multiple copies if required, or email it direct to the customer.
We tend to deal with commercial establishments, such as care home groups, so we could streamline the whole process.
With regards to the whole identity theft thing, we don't take any details from people other than name & signature, and we never have any access to home addresses, credit cards, or bank details. Like I say, we bill head office, and they send a cheque, or use direct bank transfer.
I will try and post up a copy of one of our sheets, so you can see the layout we currently use.
Are you able to help develop an app, or are you just trying to help me find a different way to acheive my goals?

My interest is in web-based mobile apps rather than os-based mobile apps. The difference being that web-based is browser only, whereas os-based runs on your device. What you've asked for here is, ostensibly, an os-based app - what I think you want is a business solution.
Right now, there is a lot of pressure, from the marketing side of the software industry, to build os-based mobile apps. Personally, I challenge the long-term commercial viability of this - because it will not fulfill customers (i.e. your) goals.
My concern is with the total cost of ownership. The bug fixes, version upgrades, and general long term viability are a 10:1 factor in favour of web-based rather than os-based. In this I'm referring only to custom/bespoke business applications not mass market targets.
(However, in your case, as you want to take your job books on-site, you may have to work without an internet connection and this means you have to go os-based.)
Forgive me if this all seems a bit esoteric.
Short answer, if you want a web-based mobile app, yes I can help. PM for details.
But... I suspect the costs to build/host could come as a bit of a shock. Your posts imply that you'd have a handful of users. To get major cost benefits you'd have to have 100's of users - and I think this would apply wherever (web or os) the app was targeted.
From what you've said, and guessing at your budget, getting someone to simply put your form into Evernote would be your likely best course of action. Sorry, I can't help with this.
(Evernote is the free Notes app that comes pre-installed with the Flyer. I've no affiliation, though I am a user.)

You make some good points mate, and I can see the benefits of all solutions.
However, as you say, with taking the Flyer on site, we do end up in "dead-spots", and this would just cause huge problems.
I was considering getting the wifi version for us, and using tethering from our phones for data when required.
If it can all be done in Evernote, then that may be an option.
The reason I would like sd card usage, is so that I can review job sheets at any time.
I would like to run a full system for job sheets, invoicing, etc. but that would just be too costly.
I think VNC to connect to the office PC would be best option for invoicing.
There are currently only 2 engineers, and we would just like a nice clean simple solution to the job sheet problem, and the Flyer seems like it could be perfect.
It would replace diaries, job books, notepads (pen & paper), sat-nav, and looks nice and professional when you are on site.

I just got my Nook Tablet 2 days ago and am very frustrated by the lack of instruction that I am finding on the internet about using this.
I know how to buy books and to change settings. I have my gmail set up but I cannot figure out the internet portion of this. For some reason the facebook login page was made to be my homepage and I have tried to change it many times....didn't work through settings. Also, while in facebook, I do not see "chat" or who is currently online. Am I doing something wrong? I did not see fb as an app in the app store.
I also have been looking at your lists of apps that everyone has added to their NT. Again, I am frustrated because I do not know what any of you are talking about. I am no techie!
Please help me out here or this thing is going back.

If you go over to the B&N website and click on support for the Nook Tablet, you will get links to a dedicated 200 page user manual in pdf. Hopefully that might answer some of your questions.
I have read the manual and it does not give specifics for fb.
I don't think chat is an option with the mobile fb site. Also, the fb app is not available through the market on the nook. There is a fb apk file in the "must have apps" thread here, but not sure if it has chat either.
One thing Barnes and Noble has over Amazon is an actual store.
If you take your NT to the store, someone there should be able to help you set it up the way you want.
In your case specifically, I would recommend ignoring postings about side loading and rooting until you have quite a bit of experience using the stock Nook. You will avoid a lot of frustration that way.
The Alps listed in the "must have" are pretty easy to install and use. Just go to that page from the browser on your nt and click on the link(s). You'll see a little arrow in your notification area, click that and choose the package installer. At some point you'll need to check to OK installing non-market apps. Once you've installed the apps, you can get to them by seaching from the nooks search function. I would recommed installing the Amazon market and buying wave launcher. It will let you access up to 12 apps by swiping a finger, and you can also access all your apps through an app drawer that way too.

I think the OP has received several helpful replies to their problem.
As for the forum itself, I'm new and my experience has been that each of my polite inquiries have received responses, including help side-loading, rooting, and issues with default ringtones.
Perhaps insulting those who are in no hurry to get on Skype and talk to someone they've never met, is a questionable approach. Just a thought.

"Meet" is probably the wrong word. In this sense it would be seeing a number of posts from a user to get a feel for how they deal with others, how knowledgable they are, etc.
You have no doubt seen posts from people which gave you a strong desire to have no interaction with them at all. That kind of thing.
In the very short time I've been watching these forums I've already seen several people jump in with an extremely demanding attitude. Like somehow they're entitled to everyone's immediate help.
Where does that come from? This isn't a Barnes & Noble site. These people aren't paid by B&N. Coming in demanding help seems like the wrong tack to take. If someone is looking to rant about the device they'd probably be more successful going into a B&N store.

Dude, maybe people don't want to take time out of their day to be your personal nook/android tutor when literally every single person has figured **** out themselves by either using the forum search function or using Google. If you used your time to do research instead of writing long rambling posts, you would already be way ahead of where you are now regarding knowledge. In regards to the op... he did seem to come into a technical forum to attemp to figure out very basic usage information. Read a few threads here and im sure youll pick up some things. I had to google a lot of acronyms and things last week to get up to speed. Kexec, cwm, etc. You'll pick it up. Just keep reading!
I think this has been one off the nicer forums on here, and and I'm proud to be a part of it.
In general augustusbot is 100% correct. This is a forum for modding not for basic usage, the problem though is in general there is no good manual for any android device. The fact that Barnes and Noble has physical stores is great, it is their job to show you how to use your device.

jdubr is just being polite. Nobody wants to talk to you because you behave like a b**t on this forum. The internet is a place full of normal people, but it has its fair share of we****s/a*****es. And we know very little about a person other than what we can discern from their online behaviour. From your prior posts, I personally find you a "***** ******** ******". And I believe most other people would feel the same way. That's why no one wants to talk to you. Try cooling off, then going through your previous posts and looking at them objectively. See if this happens in real life, or in other forums/personal interactions.
It's well and good saying you are well-liked. But based on the evidence we see, it seems to be the opposite. Nobody owes you information, or help. Anything anyone provides here is a gift, yet you demand it and complain when you don't get it.
It's true that information on forums isn't always very organised. But that's just the way they function. There ARE efforts to make it neater. But sometimes the developers/etc are too busy trying to figure out higher level problems to neaten up their work for a beginner to follow. In any case, they don't owe it to you, me, or anyone else.
I'm sure the developers would be more than happy to have people put up tutorial videos for them. But you have to ask nicely, and put in your own effort as well. The effort taken to develop/program/code is immense. To make things fair, how about putting in some of your own effort rather than adding to their load by asking them to simplify/explain everything in a beginner friendly manner?
To the OP, Joyce, there are various FB chat programs on the Android Market, you can try them instead of the official FB app. Also, there is some information on the Android Development Subforum about changing your screen dpi to 160, which may allow you to see the normal FB app on market. But that aspect is not fully firmed up yet, so you might want to wait a week or two till they have it stable.
As for "must have" apps, if you are new to Android, try downloading some of them which sound good, and try them for yourself. What others find good, may not work well for you. And part of the fun is exploring the Market to find apps that fit your purposes well, even if they aren't particularly popular. Try reading the descriptions and reviews on the Market for a quick feel of how the app works.

I gather we'd need a new kernel to support usb host for a wired keyboard, and probably the same to activate bluetooth. It occurs to me that B&N viewed the Color as a color ereader, but now views their new hardware more broadly as a tablet. They may be willing to embrace a larger role for the tablet than they did for the color. They might be persuaded to introduce their own keyboard and tweak the OS to accommodate it, and any improvements would be one less thing our devs have to figure out for themselves.
For an easy method to support, Laurel this suggestion (click the leaf on the left) at B&N. Though easy, this method might be the most effective. B&N just set up that suggestion forum for customer feedback on features, so maybe they'll actually listen there.
For a harder method, I'm recruiting people to email tech support and request a keyboard/case be made available. I've already done it myself, but one request is easy to ignore, so I hope I can find some like-minded folks to join me and pester B&N until they give us our Nooktop. I think there's a decent argument that the NT could make a decent netbook replacement for college students who are interested in having an ereader, and that targeting college students early makes for guaranteed customers down the line (ask Apple about that).

Someone just reminded me over on the B&N boards that I had keyboards for all my PDAs back in the day. It's a different market nowadays, but with the Atrix, transformer, thinkpad, and iPad accessories, clearly there is still demand along these lines.
I can tell a lot of people would like a board from posts on other sites, but I don't think I've had a single person anywhere say they did actually send a message to B&N, so maybe my efforts are for naught, but it's worth a bump to be sure. It's easy, hit the link in the OP, write 1 sentence if that's all you've got in ya. Worst case is you're out 15 seconds.
Anyone not interested in emailing B&N can voice their opinion by laureling this suggestion at the B&N forums. Quick easy way to tell B&N to do their job and not force our volunteer devs to do everything for them.

Third year college student here and I totally agree. I've been searching around for this like crazy and, like you said, why should we have to pester our awesome devs who are already extensively busy with our reuqests?

There is a B&N employee who moderates and now manages the new suggestions forum. He has been marking the status of various requests in time. Some are merely acknowledged, others are marked as in development. Certainly this guy isn't high-up, but it is entirely possible B&N will use him to filter up information about user requests more effectively than their current support system does. That seems to be the point of that forum. Take a look.
While I don't have this device, your request surely deserves B&N's attention. Seems like a win-win for them, and you.

I am currently looking for a device to replace my almost 4 years old netbook which is beginning to die on me right now.
One of the devices I am looking into is the Prime and I am hoping you could answer a couple of n00b questions for me.
What I am planning on doing with my future device could be seperated in 4 four points:
1) Mailing and websurfing. Of course this should work with the Prime.
2) Watching videos. Have seen enough reviews that proof how good this works on the Prime, too.
3) I am a student and therefore would really like to be able to read scripts (pdf format mostly) on my device and also being able to add handwritten comments to those pdfs and print them afterswards with the comments included.
I suppose there are a quite a few apps that would do that trick, right?
4) This is actually the one point that is holding me back from instantly ordering a Prime.
I´d like to have a device that lets me edit office documents. Of course there are enough of office apps out there but so far I havn´t found a single one that includes an equation editor for word documents.
Judging by some comments I have read and some screenshots I have seen on here I guess I am not the only one who majors in engineering or mathematics or anything else that includes a lot of formulas.
So, I was wondering how do you handle this compatibility issue?
And one last question that is only slightly related to the Prime itself: I guess most of you have the device configuration as I do. A smartphone, a laptop/tablet and a desktop pc.
How do you handle the "data scattering". YOu know, having a particular movie file on PC, another audio file on the phone and docs on the tablet etc.
How do you sync all this?

apologies if this has already been answered i did search and found a few pots but they didn't give me all the information i was hoping for or match my criteria exactly.
Ok so i have a 3 year old son,
his hand to eye coordination is coming along and ever since he's been able to unlock his mothers ipad we cant get him off it.
i have no problem with him using the technology at such a young age in moderation and im sure it can be quite educational with the right apps etc.
however using his mothers ipad is not ideal, its totally open he could accidentally press anything from in app purchases or anything that is available on the internet which is a scary thing.
we came to the conclusion that he needs his own tablet, that we can load with selected app's and he can play etc.
i looked at the tablets designed specifically for kids like the vtech's leapfrogs etc but im not exactly sure they will be the best way forward because they wont really grow with him yes they are probably great for a certain age range but as he gets older it will loose its usefulness.
i need something that's going to be pretty much a disposable price (£30/£60) lets be frank this is probably going to be destroyed on several occasions.
so i want want an android tablet the bigger size the better. I need it to be able to root the device as i want to take advantage fully of titanium back and restore direct to a replacement device if needed.
needs to be able to run sort of childrens apps available i know the can be a broad spectrum but lets just say the average ones (processor / memory consumption wise)
i have seen lots of different softwares to lock the os down, so only use certain apps etc but any other suggestions would be great. or anyone who has made something similar.
