Why have my pictures been edited?
why don't you post some pictures of the screen displaying an actual image. You've fallen prey to the age old wives-tale of screens having issues because they look odd when they are not displaying an image...
My second RAZR had the black blotches when viewing anything dark in a low lit room. It has now been sent back and need to decide if I'm risking another. No matter what the screen should not have any **** on it full stop, not on a high end handset like this.

All RAZRs have this. It's only visible in extremely dark lighting and extremely dark content displaying - E.G. you-won't-notice-it-unless-you're-looking-for-it-and-it-makes-no-difference-anyway.

exif data is ripped out of this pic, but the original shows a Nikon D200 and:
It's a 15+ second long exposure IIRC.
That long open shutter is going to make it more dramatic looking. I'm sure that people looking at this pic think that is exactly what they will see in real life. Nope.
Here's a version with exif intact:

It is not exaggerated if the owner of the handset can notice the blotches doing things like taking a photo or watching a video or anything that has a black background in low level lighting. In the UK the RAZR costs £450 and for that money I want a screen that's perfect and not full of blotches. Simple really

"The RAZR display uses a new high efficiency OLED material. These screens may in some cases exhibit slightly darker regions, like you've noticed. Because the darker regions are only visible when viewing the black screen in a very dark environment, they will not interfere with general use. Most importantly, they don't change over time and are typical for this generation of OLED material. They in no way indicate a problem or defective screen."

If every single RAZR had it how come some people are stating that there handset does not have it? Plus if all RAZR's have it then it is a defect on a massive scale. No screen on a handset of this value should have a spec of dust under it let alone these black blotches that people are noticing.

My uncle, step-dad, and 2 friends that have the RAZR have this. Look at the number of people commenting on it at any given time on any RAZR-related site. Granted, most people won't notice because it's rarely visible, but I am 99% sure that every single phone has this. It's intentional.

No, but it is also very improbable that EVERY SINGLE phone produced has it as a defect.

Within the first week of the evo3d launch, I decided to return my telesales EVO3D to sprint retail store due to lockups (battery pull). The Encino, CA Sprint store employees were a bunch of tighty whitey types, but nonetheless, they exchanged it out after 20 min of going back n forth.
The new phone at first glance appeared NORMAL, but once i started setting up my evo to the way i liked it (within minutes), i noticed a brown/yellow hue to the screen, specifically towards the whites. At first i thought my eyes were playing tricks and i was tripping out,.
Long story short, I couldn't get over it. I dealt with for a few days and decided no effen way, is this the epson vs novatec bull all over again? So i posted and at first, nobody really noticed, even those with multiple evo's... But recently, I see more and more threads about this very exact thing.
With term.emu, i decided to go through all the evo3d's in my possession, total of 4 (returns for locks, and 1 for defective charge input)..
what i found is that Novatec is building screens for sharp or in some fashion assisting. 1 Panel Type appeared as NOVATEC === SHARP NT or something.. and the rest have all been SHARP.
2 out of 4 EVO'd has the yellow hue affect and the other 2 had the bright white or fake white effect.
side by side comparison with brightness @ 100% showed the yellow hue screen to be somewhat more realistic as opposed to the bright white (Fake white). But, that doesnt mean, at least for me, it looked better. The bright whites were more attractive to me.
I also noticed 2 different MircoSD brand. SANDISK and KINGSTON class 4. Testing showed the both performed the same, read/writes up to 15MB/s per the windows file transfer of a 1.6 gig movie. (how accurate windows is not important bc it simply is the baseline as they both performed the same)
now for the pictures. .. my camera couldn't pick up the fine color difference like the naked eye, but here is a peak.. in real life, the yellow is much much more apparent.

I have a H/W 0002 with "PANEL_ID_SHR_SHARP_NT" and yellow looking whites. It is annoyingly yellow, however the white balance is very natural. Human eyes are easily fooled into thinking things are "whiter" when a blue tint is applied, so it's only natural we feel the blueish tinted ones are better. However I'd take accurate color reproduction over my immature reaction of "yucky", so I'm happy.
Its apparent that others are not happy with the phones they have and are replacing them.
My 4th seems to not have any defects, no freezing or locks yet. Seems like 4th time is the charm here. It not suppose to take 4 phones to be happy though.
Thanks to all these posts I have now noticed that i have a yellow screen. Thanks for giving me something to be obsessed about.

What are the two types of screen? Is it sharp and novatec?
Sent from my 3rd Dimension of Evolution
Hi,
I got my S2 a couple days back and was watching a movie in a completely darkroom and noticed that the screen wasn't truly black when the title were playing. I initially thought it was an issue with movie so I tested the screen with a pure black screen (*#0*#) and noticed that the screen glowing a tad lighter than black and I had several black patches on the screen. This is extremely annoying when using apps that have a lot of black or when watching movies. the dark patches and streak is also noticeable in the clock app in the dark grey patterned lower area. I have seen this issue mentioned in another post but there is no definitive answer as to whether this problem can be fixed or goes away after some usage. I would just like to know if I should send this in for replacement? What are my other options?
I also noticed that my 3 day old phone already had slight notification bar burn ins and even my google search widget seems to be burning in to the screen. Honestly I am extremely disappointed with these QC issues and this is my second unit as I had the first replaced for other screen issues.
I'd return it now for a NEW replacement, before the time expires. After a certain timeframe, only repair warranty most likely available, and that will probably take longer.
In some cases, it could be only 1 week.

ya I have a 30 day replacement offer so I guess I will be using that. Hope I'm lucky the third time around.
You may already know this, but;
If you send it back and your phone is rooted, custom rom etc, ensure you flash back stock firmware and get a usb jig to reset the samsung custom flash counter and remove warning triangle.

Edit/update
Im on Gingerbread 2.3.3 XWKF3 (India)
If someone could please try this simple test and let me know their results, I would be very grateful.
Test Procedure:
- Find a completely dark room (easier at night)
- goto phone keypad and dial *#0*#
- tap the button that says Black (Vibration)
- now look directly at the screen for a few seconds and let your eyes adjust
At this point do you see?
a) pure black (cannot distinguish btw bezel and screen),
b) an even mild glow, sort of like a backlight
c) a glow along with patches/blotches of pure black?
I see option (c). Could some of you pls do this test and let me know your results. This problem can also be seen, under the same dark conditions, if the clock app is opened. If you have the same problem I have, then you should see dark patches in the grey area.
I tried out before my last reply, but in dim (not dark) conditions, seemed ok.
Now tried as you suggested, and let my eyes adjust for a few second, I can see what your saying.
Maybe this its part of the super amloed + screen?
So in short , I'll take answer C

Well here's a photo to better demonstrate my issue. It is a little exaggerated by the camera but still pretty accurate. One can also see that the glow has a reddish tint. It was taken with a DSLR in hi res. You can see just how bad it is. Yes this is not that noticeable if the room isn't really dark but it's pretty damn bad in my room with all the lights out. And thats how I usually read at night. I wouldn't even mind an even glow but the splotches are unacceptable.
Ok your screen is clearly a QC fail. Go and exchange it ASAP. The screen does have a faint glow because it needs to be powered, but it should be a VERY faint and even glow perceptible only in pitch black conditions.

OK so long story short since I'm on my phone. With the screen dimmed and with a dark background, the phone looks like it has a tear in the screen that's darker than the black wallpaper. Its most notable when in the desk clock aosp apk with the night mode on. Very odd. Also, I can see it elsewhere if I try.
Anyone else have this?
On a side note, the vibrate mechanism seems fairly noisy.

I wish you best of luck at the Veriozn store you'll need it. When I was complaining about hissing noises from my headphones with the Bionic which is a known issue , the rep and manager denied hearing it when it was easy to hear. I do have exceptional hearing, but even my buddy with crappy hearing was able to hear it. So I just called them both deaf and left the store.

Have you compared your display to others like you planned?
I've got my RAZR yesterday and it seems to have exactly the same issue Its hardly noticeable during usual activity with the phone, but once you've got solid black background - it shows image like it was a transparent green tiled film on it with lots of dots and a green-lighted vertical strip on the left of the screen.
Bought mine at handtec. With all delivery process (to Russia) not sure what to do with it... return?

Besides that, the screen looks awesome and this is not noticeable in a good light.
STEPS TO REPRODUCE:
1. Just make a picture without flash covering your lens.
2. Go to the dark room without any lights.
3. View Picture. Observe the display!

I would say that my "blobbing" is a little bit worse than what you see there.
Some are worse than others. On my first SGS2, an entire third of the screen was discolored. The second was worse- a fourth was discolored with lines across the screen. The third one, and the one I kept, only has two small spots on the left side.
If it bugs you, go to the store and get the best one they have.

How exactly do you check for it in the store? The fact that it is only noticeable in dark conditions is hard to check for.
I don't think I'm experiencing these black spotty colors. However...
My first SGS2 had some pixel problems. See image below. That line of pixel shows a higher contrast of whatever is displaying on that row of pixels. It only shows up at certain times when the videos or photos show some color or contrast threshold that activates these problem lines of pixels.
My second SGS2 has a soft (almost) black glow at the bottom on landscape (or left side at portrait) against a completely black background only noticeable at night (like when I'm in bed with the bedroom lights off). This doesn't bother me that much. I'm keeping it.

I don't think I understand what you are talking about on the second picture. When viewing a black background at night my whole screen has a somewhat grey glow to it. The blobs show up as solid black against the grey.
Seemingly to counter the LCD owners moaning about AMOLEDs vibrant colours Samsung has added an extra mode to the S3 screen settings.. 'Natural'. We now have 4 modes.
Dynamic
Standard
Natural
Movie
There is also a temperature option within the videoplayer itself to further tweak the look.
Which do you prefer?
Natural all the way. Once you use it for a while Dynamic and standard look a little too gimmicky..
Actually prefer standard! Natural and movie look too washed out and dynamic looks too saturated.

I hate the sharpening artefacts brought by the dynamic and normal modes. Just look at the signal bar. I personally use the movie mode.
The screen set on standard looks the best for me, natural or movie look way too washed out, quite horrible, in fact.

I was waiting to see the display in real life to buy one.
But does the screen really look thàt bad? Cuz dear god! It looks like Windows 95 without video driver?
Nah in person the screen looks amazing. Dunno what all the fuss is about.

Nah, it doesn't have any of the "scanline-ish" stuff you see on the pictures, it's the camera's macro mode.

Maybe not the scanlines, but my galaxy s ii with low resolution and dithering can look like a windows 95 machine with only 256 colors when viewing many pictures. Giant blocks of limited colors and shades. They just happen to be very very saturated, and dark.
And thanks for the picture comparison. It was so nicely shot I was debating whether it was a screencap or not. I guess it is still hard to judge though since I am viewing these pictures right now on an IPS monitor. Even if I viewed them on my s2 with superamoled, there's no guarantee with all the image processing from the camera and my phone, but the comparison makes its point in regards to the color differences between the modes.

Only movie mode disables the horrible sharpening artifacts. But out looks way too wash out and too warm. What I do is use power save level 1 in browser.
Wish there was a mode between Natural and Standard. Natural is just a tad bit too washed out, but Standard is way too overexposed.
Can't wait for the devs to do their magic!

Mostly natural but will switch to standard now and then.

No. That's just a crappy photo. The screen is amazing.

Can someone post a video of the different modes, like playing a movie trailer? I wanna see how saturated animated 3d movies are (lorax, madagascar 3) and whether or not live action movies people have natural skin tones instead of alien colored red and orange skin.

I agree. Standard is oversaturated, while natural is undersaturated.
I voted dynamic, but i think it depends a lot on the wallpaper you have and its colors. if my wallpaper had vibrant colors I think I'd tone it down
There is however a too high blue tint on the screen. Can this be solved?
I'm really curious to see what devs can do about this and I agree that a mode between 'natural' and 'standard' is needed. Or better yet, the ability for users to set their own custom modes. I wonder too if it will be possible for devs to remove the white shadow that appears around text, especially over grey backgrounds.
With proper tweaking, I think the SGS3 screen will look as good as the one on the HOX but there's still a lot of work to be done...

The white shadows around text are sharpening artifacts. That looks bad enough but the sharpening also make text appears grey instead of black and lowers the contrast. Using the level 1 power saving mode in browser turns off the sharpening and improves text appearance but makes the display slightly bluish.
