After reading several threads here and over google, I decided to try formatting my external SD to ext4.
I downloaded MiniTool Partition Wizard and did everything as requested. It apparently did format to ext4, but my cellphone did not recognize the SD card.
I had to turn it back to FAT32 in order to be recognized.
I'm using dlevROM fully rooted.
I would appreciate if someone could help me thru this.
Thanks.

Why don't you format the sd card by using the phone itself?
I do not bother which file system is used as long as the read/write response times are OK and everything is stable.
And after formatting the sd card with your phone, it will be recognized ... that's for sure.
Because when you format thru the phone it formats in FAT32. And I don't wan't to use FAT32, I must use a file system which enables me to copy files over 4GB.
I've tried once again today to format my microSD. This time I tried to ext3, but the result was the same.
After formatting via MiniTool Partition phone says it's damaged and asks if I want to format. After formatting thru the phone it returns back to fat32 and works perfectly. I REALLY don't know what to do anymore.
May you guys please help me?

I've been trying for the last couple days too, I don't think its possible without some OS changes. Hopefully ICS will handle it better.
If all you care about is being able to have files > 4GB, you might try NTFS instead of ext4. There is a kernel mod floating around that will let you use NTFS-formatted SD cards; IIRC, it's called ntfs.ko. A search might turn up something.
Try this on a shell (terminal app or adp) after formatting the card to ext4:
Code:
su
mount -t ext4 /dev/block/mmcblk1p1 /mnt/sdcard/external_sd
ignore the "damaged card" message and try to access it via a filemanager.

Do you know for sure that the ROM/Kernel that you're using supports ext4 partitions? ext4 should be enabled at kernel to be able to use it in your phone, else the kernel doesn't know what you're trying to mount and it won't work.
If you're sure it should work, try partitioning the SD card with another tool, such as GParted. There are some partitioning tools that don't work well in certain situations. Try loading the partitioned SD card on GParted and see if it displays correctly the partition information. Maybe the program you're using isn't saving the info correctly.

If I reinsert my SD card, It seems to give me a message saying it's been inserted. But it's still not detected. How can I fix this?
Regards.
delete your ext2 or ext3 partition.
only fat32 with 1 partition (you don't need ext2 anymore for your sdcard)
make backup of your sd card before!
I'm unsure how to do this. Also, thanks for your response. It's been total chaos for me. I guess they should've included this step in the installation process.
backup your sd card via computer then format your sd card to fat32 then try if is detected.
sory for bad english
I did that and there is still an issue.
when you insert sd in phone do you select mount sd card? maybe your sd card is not working great

hey do you have option in CyanogenMod setting - Performance settings - SD card Cache size
maybe you can try difrent cache size
i hope will work
Not working where is everyone!
go on development forum there you may find a solution or install CM7 gingerbread v13
Right click Computer - Manage - Disk Manager.
Then delete al the ext partions and reformat your card.
do as terrormattie.
makesure you're deleting the right partition and storage.
you can always use other tools like partition wizard to delete or create it later.

Try a different mount script for link2SD. Try ext3 since your partition is ext3. Try ext2 if that doesn't work.

But the tutorial I'm following states that to select FAT32/FAT16, I don't want to mess up with my memory card
it will be ok,
mine using MIRACLEv4
8GB memory = First Part. 6.5GB FAT32 + Second Part. 1GB ext3
using mount script for ext3,
im using link2sd wid miracle v4..
formatted my sd card as fat32 and ext3 as my extension
reboot and then choose ext3 as ur 2nd partition..
it should be working
never used miracle but on dt the first partition is for apps and the 2nd is the larger storage partition. So you could try swapping the order round.
I saw some tutorial too, when they told to select the format of the first partition, then the format of the second one. But either it is based on an old version or simply wrong. When i installed link2sd yesterday, it only asked for the second partition, as the first is already handled by the system.
You have to choose the ext 3 partition. The fat32 partition already can be read by the phone. But to move apps to the ext 3 partition it is necessary to create the mountscript wich enables reading the ext 3 partition, too.
After choosing the ext 3 partition you have to reboot to apply the script: then it's possible to create the links to ext 3 (moving the apps to the new intern storage/ext 3 parition)
By creating the new mountscript you don't create a new partition (you don't delete the storage); you just cretae the script to read the partition
Hi,
I have a Galaxy S3 (GT-I9300) with CynogenMod 9-20120804-NIGHTLY-i9300 installed. I am using the standard CM9 kernel etc as well.
My issue is that I have a 64GB Sandisk external SD card that I have formatted to Fat32 so I can mount it and use it with CM9. It mounts fine first up but then starts un-mounting then goes through and prepares itself and mounts again. It does this off and on at random times. Is there anyway I can check whether this is a software or hardware issue? It is extremely frustrating, can't listen to music or anything off the SD card as it keeps unmounting etc.

jus a suggestion.... if you can try the sd card in another phone or try another memory card in your phone... that way you'll know if its the software or hardware
Hey, no I don't have another SD card to try. I may be able to try my SD card in an old Nokia I have though...
I really wish it would work, want to be able to put my 20GB of music on it!
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
I had a similar problem with cm-9-20120728-NIGHTLY-i9300
I inserted a brand new sandisk 64GB sdxc and it reported 'damaged sd card'
when i tried to format it from the phone it got stuck at 'unmounting device'
The solution for me was putting it into my brother's galaxy s2- format took 15seconds and i could use the card normally on my phone.
Well I formatted the 64GB SD Card in my old Nokia without an issue. After putting it back in the phone I had the same issues again.
I then tried a old 8GB SD Card I had around. That also was un-mounting on and off.
It seems like the problem maybe the actual SD card slot itself. See a picture below. It seems to be worse once I put the battery cover on the phone. If I old the card hard in it doesn't seem to un-mount like it has been doing. Not to sure what to do from here.... Maybe flash stock firmware and check SD card operation. If I have the same issues then maybe send away under warranty.

Here's the deal.
Today I woke up to my phone charging by the night... but it downcharged to 15% of batterry. I reboot it and find out that my SD card showed up info of being "empty". The minitool partition wizard on a PC shows me that info:

no no, the memory card is 8GB not 32MB.
How to recover the partitions? Also, the SD card has been partitioned for use with app2sd programs with this tut: http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/SD_card_partitioning, because my phone (HTC Explorer "Pico") has a very small amount of internal memory. The rom was stock though.
Of course I could re-format it, but I don't want to, because the data stored there was very special to me. I want to recover it.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions
I had that same problem a while back. I unmounted the SD Card and put it in another phone and it still said the same. So I soft reset my first phone, put the SD Card back in, and all was good.

But the card couldn't be recognized on a Linux, on a DMDE, SD Formatter, HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool, and primary on a TestDisk and on a GParted, and one big nothing was achieved.... You say that if I just soft reset the android phone, everything will be back to normal? Did you had the exactly same problem? You know, I need to clarify things before I do something that could destroy entirely my data.
I didn't have the exact problem just something similar and a soft reset (which will do no harm) worked for me. If the SD card can't be read any other ways then I don't know anything else other than formating the SD card.

Hello!
First of all, happy new year!
I have a problem with my Honor 7. I have a Toshiba Exceria 128 GB SD Card. When I inserted it, my phone recognized it in the parameters menus but it gave the SD Card a strange name: 1489-D352. And of course /sdcard/ cannot be found...
My configuration:
Honor 7
Build PLK-01C432B380
EMUI 4.0.1
Android 6.0
Til I didn't consider as the main storage place in the parameters, /sdcard/ can be found and it corresponds to internal storage. As soon as I declare the external sd card as the main storage, it starts malfunctionning.
As the name isn't correct, lot of applications can't find SD Card path and I have to set it manually for every application that needs to write on the SD Card.
I formated it in my phone, in my computer, exFAT or NTFS. Started the phone with the SD Card, without it, format it before, after... Nothing changes...
Can you help me, please? And forbid my english as I'm french...
i got toshiba 32 gb sdcard working fine as ext_SdCard.... android 6.0 emui 4.1

Here is what I have...
have you tried using FAT32 format?
Formatting in FAT32 is impossible from Windows. I opened a Command Windows and I launched "format J: /fs:fat32". But it takes a while to foemat 128 GB ! 3% right now.
I'll come back to give news when it's ready.
Volume is too big for FAT32...
Any other idea ?

my sd card runs on ntfs.... (changed when i was moving 5gb+ files and there was limit)
OK, I formated my sd card with NTFS file format.
If it's not main storage location, it's OK. It's named sdcard and everything is OK... Except that there's only 2GB left on main storage !
As soon as I changed my main storage location to external sd card, everything goes wrong.
But, in the third and last screen capture, you can see what Files (correct application name ???) shows: sd card. Correct name but it's the only place it appears so. In other applications, the sd card is named 9CB87....
GAAAAAAAAAHHHHH!
Coucou !
Still no idea ? As it's a real problem for me.
Anytime I insert my new sd card and wait for a while it dissapears and i re-insert but still the same.
i dont know if its my phone but it works ok when am using the pc
