i want to know if its really lived up to the hype i think it looks nice but the battery is smaller than my fascinate and the thunderbolt is more of a resource hog and it seems thats everyone biggest complaint
I will keep mine...Root is coming...
keeping it, a phone is a phone, but root makes it MY phone...
i'm keeping mine. i upgraded from the original droid so this is a fantastic phone even-though the battery isn't great. still, i think it will be a matter of finding a balance or tweaks to get the battery running longer. plus, someone said root is coming and that will be followed by some roms which will make this awesome phone run better and more efficiently.

if you haven't seen the development section, they accomplished root on the first night, and last night we were able to get past write protection which means custom recovery to flash custom roms and such. Instructions will be posted later today and a "one-click" root method will be posted in about a week or so...
k if only someone in the marketplace was willing to sell their thunderbolt i am so ready to get it and last question i already have unlimited data plans do i need to also sign up for 4g LTE data if there is no 4g in this area
I am coming from a samsung omnia which was a total piece of junk. I think this phone is amazing. Battery life is not so good but I am sure it will get better once I work with it a little more. I am sure I will have a go at rooting it once they get the process more simplified. I cant wait to get some of the bloat off the phone.

no, you do not6 need to sign up for a 4G plan if you currently have a unlimited 3G plan. I do not have 4G in my area yet either, was told I would be grandfathered in on the unlimited plan even after 4G rolls out nationwide.

Haha same here, Blazingwolf's ROM made it much better but after he stopped developing for it I used lioryte's barebones ROM. Sad part is that the Thunderbolt out of the box had better battery life than my Omnia currently does and it was replaced a year ago.
Edit: And no I will not be selling it, I will wait 8mos or so and we'll see. But I think so far other than being short Skype Mobile it's doing what I hoped it would.
I have waited for this phone since aug 2010 .... almost left verizon for the evo even tried to unlock a evo for verizon . i'll be keeping this phone for a while . the only problem is the battery which i solved by getting the extended battery today ..
For me its been worth the wait, I've been running with RIM for the past 3 years and wanted to buy all of the early android phones, but this one fits me the best. I've become anti Moto sin the locked boot loaders and the comments from some of the big wigs of the company, but it looks like HTC wants to get into the locking business too. But definitely loving the Tbolt and rooted and running VirusROM at this time, but I've found myself to be a ROM-aholic so I may jump around.
I had been looking forward to getting a top of the line device for some time and i feel that ive found it with the t-bolt. Already rooted and beyond pleased. Looking forward to digging into it a little deeper
The battery is fine after using titanium backup to freeze all the htc crap in a stock rom, and I'm sure aosp will make things even better.

I was tempted to take it back as you have a 30 day return policy. Coming from the Incredible I was definitely impressed with the 4g speeds. But with all the "Forced Close" errors, the larger-than-expected form factor, and the lousy battery life I was seriously contemplating sending it back but then I heard that Verizon is going to move to a tiered data plan for the LTE 4G so I thought it better to get a phone and get the unlimited plan now so that when they switch over, I'd be grandfathered in with the unlimited plan.
So I'm keeping it.
Coming from the Nexus S, in some respects, the Bolt is a step backwards for me. Don't get me wrong it's a great device and the speeds of LTE is fantastic. However, super amoled of the NS is much better IMO as is the chipset used (hummingbird). The TB feels quite sluggish in comparison. So in the end LTE just isn't enough for me to keep the device.

I have had 5 different android phones (X, D2, D1, D2G, DI) and ALL of them needed extra or extended batteries. Even with CM and Tasker.
I too Came from Fascinate And this thing Is alot smoother on browsing and Has Flash 10.2. The 3g speeds seem alot faster than Fascinate and 4g Blows it away. After dowloading an app to turn off 3g/4g Battery life Improves alot. Plus im liking how stock browser lets me switch to desktop only for Browsing and the bigger screen is cool too. not Missing Fascinate at all.
It's a huge upgrade from my Samsung Rogue (lol) so I'm loving mine, and hoping for an easy, relatively safe root before I do anything fancy
Not me ,I love this phone. It is just starting to get good here...
I just wonder how you can aquire a lte sim card cause my personal information is embedded on my sim so thats not going to be included when I sell the phone in 3 years

Hey guys,
I'm wondering if I should upgrade to the Thunderbolt. I have a Droid 1 running Cyanogenmod and my ideal phone is a dual core LTE 4g phone. Bionic isn't looking too hot so I'm wondering if I should just get the Thunderbolt?
I really want a dev friendly phone, I love flashing new Roms. Is the thunderbolt for me?
I'd love to see CM7 on it but I don't think its out. Should I be waiting for another phone or should I get the thunderbolt?
Thanks!
I'm waiting fir CM on my TB form what. I've heard correct me if I'm wrong. CM 3G and 4G work Wifi. Is still in works. And my bugs to work out.
Rooting is simple either root method you for me I couldn't do the ADB method. I did easyroot and it worked fine either is simple. Droid bionic ehh. Motorola that's what made me lose a lot of interest. I don't like moto blur what so ever.
-Monky_1
And you should get a screen protector its a MUST the glass sucks on the TB
-Monky_1
So I should get it?
No other 4g verizon phones are on the horizon?
Ive had my Tbolt for 2 days and its an awsome phone. I rooted today but still running stock ROM

I upgraded to the Thunderbolt from the original Droid and I'm happy as a clam!
I don't have LTE in my area yet, but I'm not worried. This phone is soo much faster and so much more fun to use. There are also rumors that Verizon is doing away with the unlimited data plan so now is the best time to upgrade and get unlimited data with a LTE phone.
Oh yeah, getting root on this beast was a cinch and this phone will rock even more once CyanogenMod 7 comes out for it.
So yeah! Get the phone!

No but seriously. I'm rooted, running bamf 1.4 with leanKernel 1.92X. I cannot tell you how much I'm glad that I purchased this phone. Also make sure you have Swype. The lack of physical keyboard takes a bit of getting used to but Swype makes it easy.
Here's what my screen looks like atm. Speaking of screen. 4.3" is insane. Its so huge.

So im currently useing the phonton... an i love it, but the truth is im bored with it. I appreaciate all the work the devs do out there an by nomeans am i tryin to rush them. Im 2 days away from my 30 day return window an im gettin antsy an kinda thinkin of swappin for a nexus.... whata you guys think. Should i suck it up an wait for the photon to become a beast or swap for the nexus an flash away.... honest opinions would be great an appreaciated. Thanks
Sent from my PhonyDroid
I wouldn't recommend exchanging it the nexus has a single core no sd card less and slower ram no international capabilities not as hi res screen just to list a couple of reasonto stay
I own a Nexus S too. And I'd say that it's a better device overall even with its single core. What keeps me away from it is exactly your reason of moving away from your Photon - boredom. Have had it for over 6 months. It's old generation hardware already. Wouldn't you rather wait for the Nexus Prime?
Sent from my MB855 using XDA App
If you trade in at least swap for a newer device that is closer in specs. Have you considered the EVO 3D or Epic Touch 4G? You could easily swap for another 30 days and then again if you wanted the Photon back or another phone. This would give you a month or so to play around.
It boil down to what you want
if your a flash o holic and want to really go to town...why not get a used unlocked GSM development phone put in a prepay sim as a 2nt phone
I would go with the evo 3d if anything. The nexus has been plagued with radio issues. Or just get your upgrade back and wait it out. I used to be a flash a holic as well but I have slowed down a bunch over the years and find myself sticking to roms that are snappy and well build like cm7 or synergy.
Do what you like, I personally would have probably stayed with the evo 3d if the reception and call quality wasn't so poor. No point in a super phone if I roam all the time and drop calls.

Thanks for the opinions. Im stayin with the photon. Biggest reason ill be stayin is no sd card on the nexus. Thanks guys

IMO, I would stay away from Samsung. My last Samsung phone was total crap.
I tend to prefer HTC and LG phones. In my past and more recently, HTC and LG have had great support for their phones when I contacted the corporate office.
I am loving my photon and I loved my Motorola flip phone back in the old days (the one with one line display that was red and the phone was very bulky).
I am also not the type of person to root my phone. I place more importance on a working reliable phone then my ability to root and flash new roms. From my understanding, Samsung allows rooting and custom roms more so then Motorola does. I also do not root because I do not want to void my warranty ... I'm too busy with work and school to try and resuscitate my bricked phone. I also do not have $600 laying around to replace my photon if it's dead. I'm happy with changing my wallpaper when I'm in the mood. Also, the photon is the best android phone I've had (had the HTC Eris, craptacular Samsung moment, HTC evo shift, and now the Motorola photon).
Having said all that, I find the photon meets my needs but you will have to figure out what is more important to you.

I am a flashaholic as well but my main reasons for flashing were to find optimal battery life, and an overall snappy phone. Once I installed decks rom on my EVO I never flashes another rom. The photon has everything I was trying to achieve in the EVO....so I've really had no urge to flash but I know once we get some good roms going, we will be flashaholics again...lol
Sent from my MB855 using XDA App
same here. i found myself flashin daily to try everything on my evo. reason i did it is bc i wanted a fast and amazing phone. with the flashing, i got tired of always building up the phone again and such. i told myself that the next phone ill get, ill just root it and stick with stock other then maybe the kernel.
been using the mopho and havent had the urge to flash yet. sure undervolting would be nice, but i used setcpu the other day and had the screen off setting at 216/312 and when it was too low to keep pandora from not skippin when screen off. so i dont think id need any more under volting.
i use just juice defender and i get about 16 hours of medium/heavy use till she beeps at me (phone calls, lots of texting, and web browser)
i think this phone has excellent audio and sound. and i havent had the mute phone calls other then day 1. on performance mode and latest updates work well for me. I normally reboot my phone after 3 to 4 days just bc electronics tend to like it. did the same with my evo.
honestly, i dont see any other phone out there that could offer more. a world wide phone like this one. use a phone for what its built for, to stay connected to the world.
if you have the urge to flash, id buy one seperate just for the heck of it to flash and pimp out. im super happy with the mopho so far. love having the best signal around the office compared to everyone else.
Ditto to lroy's statement above.

Wait for the Photon to become a beast? Really? How? It is what it is and will be. As for the Nexus, why would you take a step backwards? Just because you can? There is the Samsung Epic 4G Touch coming out in two weeks. You could take the Photon back, use an old phone for 2 weeks and get the Sammy. Then after a couple of weeks you can take that back and get the iPhone5.
If you are looking for enough people to say "yea do it" go ahead.

I know some of you will say, "Why not get Galaxy S3?" or Why not get cheaper LG Viper 4G LTE?" The reason is I cant. I cant upgrade to 2012 smartphone without losing my old data plan. If i do that, I will be forced to get new data plan which is $54.99. Im on Sprint Relay Data only for $39.99( Im hard of hearing btw) RIght now, I have Samsung Epic 4G. Pretty old I know and it tend to die fast even with new Galaxy SII battery. I am a techie guy that know how to root and install custom roms. Right now, Im thinking abt getting Motorola Photon 4G since it can be hack to run on tmobile/At&t when I planning to leave Sprint in the future. Is Motorola Photon is a good phone??? Nope. It's not the rom that's the problem, its having that rom use a non stock kernel. To keep 4g, you would have to use a psuedorom that doesnt mess with the kernel. The only one still in development is MOF's 2.3.5ish rom.
But yes, the Photon is an amazing phone. Without a doubt the best I've ever had. And ICS is supposed to officially drop soon so that means our Jelly Bean and ICS roms will be working flawlessly. The only risk you run in ordering a Photon is that it might already have 2.3.5 on it. If this is the case, you wont be able to unlock thus unable to install any custom roms. If you do choose to get it, order it from ebay or something and make sure to ask the seller to verify it still has 2.3.4 on it by going into About Phone.
alright thanks for clarification
Great choice for you as you can have a very good phone at a affordable price. I am on Cm10 on my photon it's fantastic can give any 2012 phone a value for money competition

Considering it was released last week it's stable as hell. Obviously it'll take a bit to work out the kinks. Sending/receiving mms messages is messed up for some people, camera is a bit laggy, camcorder doesnt work, noticeable twitching in general due to the lack of 2d libs, overheats slightly, and some are reporting iffy battery life. But the exact same problems exist on our CM9 and that has been out for many months. Basically, it's about as stable as its gonna get without the proper pieces we need from Motorola. Considering they said the Atrix's official ICS build is coming in Q3 and our Photon is nearly the exact same phone, I would say we'll have the pieces we need by the end of August or mid September. Guess we will see. Congrats on getting such a good price!
Need help finding ROM with Vanilla launcher
Just brought Motorola Photon 4G on ebay and it will come on Sat or Mon! I also told him not to update it haha.
Meanwhile, i want a stable vanilla rom and this rom is close as vanilla rom. Can I flash that rom ? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1224896 Or any roms that have vanilla launcher. Not a big fan of ADW launcher btw.
Yeah you should be able to flash that, but it is kind of outdated. If you want to use cm7 you don't have to use adw launcher. Just download a different one.

Alien is quite dated. No one has worked on that since last year. Technically, CyanogenMod is vanilla android with extra customization options. Blows AOSP out of the water and is clean as a whistle. CM7.2(gingerbread), CM9(ICS), CM10(JB) -- take your pick! Id start out with 7.2 as everything works flawlessly. Once you are familiar with everything and are willing to deal with a few bugs but still stable builds, try CM9 or 10.
I finally retired my Evo OG and loved it so much I had to go with it's successor. My Evo's LCD screen went out literally when I got home from the sprint store (talk about great timing). First of all RIP Evo OG. You are still the best phone I have ever owned. I'm gonna miss you.
Anyway, I am wondering what's the first things I should do with my new Evo LTE? Should I root right away? Any good rom suggestions? Kernels? My old phone was rooted since about the time I first bought it. I was running Deck's rom for about the last 8 months. Thanks for any advice.

root... then s-off.. flash mean rom or cm10 if u like aosp roms.. i like sense myself.. i say mean rom the best sense and aosp would be cm10 for sure!
Sell it due to radio issues...
Or second.. Make sure you update to the latest baseband, pri, and all the pieces that go with it. Do not make the mistake of just updating the modem. Especially with all the issues the modem has now. Hopefully they will come out with some sort of fix but many of us are doubtful. Then from there test different roms to see what works for you.
Loved this phone for everything but uh the phone and data part. Getting a note 2 or s3 in a week and handing the evo down.

I may be of the minority, but I have had VERY FEW issues with my phone. It has worked well from the beginning and all but one issue has been resolved (contacts lagging, but not as bad for me as some report). I am not rooted and don't ever plan to be. If you're familiar with android at all you'll immediately see how broke the multitasking is. But AOSP ROMs fix that. I've read zeppelinroxs mod fixes it for sense. I'm starting its the s4 processor, cuz all I use is AOSP, and when I relaunch root explorer from recent button, root explorer always start from base level, not last open level.
hurled from my AOKP'd Evo LTE. Enjoy.
Thanks Digilbur for that info. I was actually having all sorts of trouble with data speeds for the past few days so I was starting to worry that the radio was gonna be a problem, but turns out I was worrying for nothing because sprint was having an unusual outage in my area. He said it would be fixed on the 26th so hopefully everything will be running smooth by then. I went ahead and took the OTA I received, prior to knowing about the outage, hoping it would fix my radios.
Coming from my last phone where I had to squeeze every last drop of battery life out of it, I'm loving how much longer this one lasts. I rarely played games on my OG because my phone would die, now I can spend a bunch of time playing 9 innings baseball 2013 (GO A'S!).
Anyway when I do root, which will likely be soon, I will have to try Mean rom, Flex rom, and CM10. I have been partial to AOSP roms because I like to use go launcher ex anyway, but never really liked cyanogen mod due to too some problems that are probably fixed. My main thing is without question battery life followed by functionality (everything working or working better than in stock). I'm hoping to have the multitasking fixed for sure and I'm still curious as to if there is any truth to the camera app or camera itself functioning better in sense?
Sense uses image sense with is basically post (denoise, color correction) but the camera is still leaps and bounds ahead of aosp camera in terms of functionality. The libs are supposed to have been ported but the chromatic aberration is terrible in aosp
Fleck's stock with goodies is a good ROM. Basically stock with a few features like quick toggles added. True multitasking as well but I haven't used it awhile. Cm10 is always nice.
