[Q] Which 2.3.5 firmware do i use (Telstra - Australia) - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
Any help would be aprreciated, guess i will list device info then ask the question.

Basically having a few issues like not being able to browse the web randomly (have to restart phone or data connection) and i have been lead to believe this is an issue with 2.3.3 firmware. Also getting terrible battery life etc.
Anyway i want to Update to 2.3.5 and see how that goes. I have read the [ROM+guide] for the firmware but i have no idea which firmware package i am meant to download as there doesnt seem to be a code for Australia.
Also when i do the firmware update should i be using the Individual CSC Package for Telstra rather than the CSC that comes with whatever firmware i download.
Thanks for the help, and yes i am a NOOB this is my first android phone.

There isn't any other official Telstra firmware. You'll need to root any install a custom ROM & kernel. It is advised (but not necessary) to flash back the matching carrier after for better reception, speed, battery life etc

Edit: With regard to the CSC and APN settings, these can always be put in manually, or flash the CSC via Odin (resets phone).

I realise it is not an official Telstra firmware, but ther is no update so im stuck on 2.3.3 and to be honest im sick of the data connection trouble. So im happy to go an unofficial firmware, would almost say i prefer to lol.
In regards to the [ROM + Guide] i have read it, but i still dont get which one is best for installing on Tesltra / Aus phone. And to clear that up i read through that guide and it has firmware with names like "XXKI4", "XWKI8" etc etc. No idea where i am meant to start or how i know which one is best suited.

Basic Steps;
1. Follow Chainfire's Thread for easy root for noobs. Just follow the instructions exactly! This seems to the closest CF-Root Kernel match KF4
2. As per instructions, use Odin to flash CF-Root Kernel. This will give you root and a custom recovery called CWM (ClockWorkMod), allowing you to flash ROMs, themes, kerenels that are flashable .zip directly from sdcrard (no need for Odin). You can also make "nandroid" backup in CWM, basically taking a system snaphot so you can restore that if anything goes wrong, or don't like the theme you just flashed etc. It saves to sdcard. I strongly suggest this before flashing any custom ROM. It also installs SuperUser and CWM Manager.
3. As you wish to update your Android Version 2.3.3 to 2.3.5, boot into CWM Recovery (power off: hold vol down+home+menu until recovery screen)and factory reset, format cache and dalvil cache (go to advanced), Home button selects, while vol up/dn.
4. Immediately flash custom ROM (ROMs come with kernel, but you might like to try another later) and or kernel via recovery directly from your sdcard.
5. First boot will take a few minutes.
6. As the ROM will have it's own modem, I suggest you give it a try first (check for DL/UL speed, getting H. H+ etc, signal strength etc), if not, check my signature for DL a CWM flashable specific Telstra Modem DVKF2. This might help.
Recommendations;
1. All personal taste, but, check links in my signature and read each Developers installation guide and FAQ. CheckROM (KJ3) can be highly customizable, if you want that is.
2. It come with kernel & modem. I use siyahkernel v2.2 kernel with governor set to "smartassV2" works wonders for battery life. There are many apps to control the kernel governor and CPU frequency, including SetCPU (search XDA - free for members, and donate version in market if you really like it). Be aware that this kernel will update to a newer CWM v5.xx, and any nan-backup made with prevoius CWM v4.xx will not restore.
3. Also download Hellcats tool from the Market to backup your EFS folder. This is where your IMEI is stored, and you don't want that to ever get corrupted without having a good backup. Saves to sdcard. Do this before flashing any ROM first time.
4. Flash recommeded official Telstra Modem, link in signature from sdcard via CWM Recovery.
5. Samsung USB jig - check edit1......
Edit1: This method of rooting is by far the easiest, but will give a warning triangle on boot and increase the binary flash counter shown in Download Mode. There are other methods, but the above "problem" is easily solved by purchasing a "samsung usb jig" from ebay for a couple of dollars. It will reset counter and remove warning so if you need to return for warranty, just flash Intratech Official Firmware (removes root too_ and use jig. Another plus, is that the jig will try to force the phone into download mode, and may help recover from a soft-bricked phone. So in any case, very handy to have.
Edit2: Some apps such as the CWM Manager, SetCPU etc require "SU" - SuperUser access, tap allow when requested.
Anyway, that should help you get started,......... happy flashing

As for resetting etc, phone has been reset a couple of times (telstra trying to help - ha) and i havent bothered setting up anything as i wanted to upgrade firmware.
As for being customisable, thats exactly what i want. Sick of the this is how it has to be setup the telco's and manufacturers force on customers.

No problem.
Flashing CheckROM will also install their Kitchen Pro app, and allows you to DL various, mods, thems, boot animations, kernels, modem etc etc. (Modems are generic XX not DV like in Telstra, that's why I recommend giving my flashable zip a go).
But in the end, once you get the hang of it, it's all up to personal taste, and there are many more other excellent ROMs out there.
Also check this [Theme/Mod/Apk] XWKJ3/KI8 XXKI4 - JKay Deluxe v13.1 - How the SGS2 should be! 11-23. KJay has themes and app KJay Deluxe Setting v13.1 app for KI4, KI8 and KJ3 ROMs. Allows you to customize quick settings, lockscreen & lockscreen shortcuts, advanced power button menu etc
Useful apps for backing up apps and data are Titanium Backup (Pro - allows bact restore, linking restored apps to market, more than one bacup etc). So if you change ROMs or have an update, you can restore the data.
Tip: Clear cache and dalvik cahe in CWM recovery immediately before flashing themes zip
IMPORTANT :
1. You must have Samsung KIES installed and the USB drivers on your PC,...but KIES must be closed before using Odin.
2. You may also need to enable USB debugging menu / settings / applications / development for Odin.
3. Also ensure "unknown sources" is checked in menu / settings / applications / for non-market apps.
+ You may need to recheck these after firmware flash as well.
