If you have unlocked bootloader, hold power plus home button, when the screen goes black press and hold "back button" and plug your phone into PC or Mac. You will enter "recovery mode". After that try to flash kernel.(maybe you will have to try it twice or trice)
Good luck
.

Install them the same way you do a ROM, select them in recovery... no need to rename it to "update".
Yes, install after the ROM, maybe let the phone boot up once so everything can load and then boot into recovery and select the hotfix.
Good luck

can I install a custom kernell and will every ROM work with it.
using X10 mini pro [MiniCM7 pro v12]
i have xperia x10 from japan and actually this was given me my sister but my question is how do i found if this is x10a or x10i? sorry my english. i want to know this before rooting because before i root the x10 of my brother and i brick it and after that i never root it again.
Go to menu-setting-about phone.
Sent from my X10i using XDA App
You can't brick an x10 first off...
Secondly go to settings> about phone...
did you try going to settings>about phone?

How to use custom roms
Hi.
Search for flashtool in this forum... it will help you root your phone and get xrecovery and busybox installed. You will need that to install custom roms.
Custom roms will also be found in this forum, so a little search will help.
Keep in mind that GB for X10 does not have full camera implemented. I have Froyo (MIUI) which works like a charm for me.

Check this out
You'll find that most people here are willing to help out, but you are expected to do your homework also. As you can see, all the questions you might have have been asked before. If you search first you'll find most of your answers faster than posting a new thread. AND if you still don't find what you need people will be a lot more willing to help seeing that you tried before. Enjoy!
To be fair I tryed using the search function yesterday numerous times and it didn't work. Kept saying come back in 20 minutes.
Really frustrating and I always seem to need help when its not working.
Sort it out xda

Hey Sorry Sweetlover but:
If you don't understand how to use search-button and if you are incapable to find a solution in this forum and if you don't understand the instructions in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1754429, you are probably incapable to root your device.

OK. I'm also a noob, but I rooted my xperia s (with locked Bootloader) last week with this solution:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1754429
If you read through the first post completly you will find the following phrase:
"Guide:
Before you root your device, your device must running Gingerbread. Flash it back to Gingerbread if your device are running Ice Cream Sandwich Open Run.dat and it will lead you through the process"
If you are on ICS you have to flash black to Gingerbread with Flashtool. Here the link to the Flashtool thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1588586
And here the link to the xperia s firmware thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1599303
There is no simple root-method at the moment, perhaps later, I don't know. Keep in mind: This is a new device and the development of a dedicated root-method keeps a lot of time. Please take a look at other threads and read through. Collect as much information as possible.

I had done that. When using the flashtool I had kept that option checked but when I did successfully (no errors messages in flashtool) flashed and downgraded to GB from ICS, I was not able to download any apps from play store. I was also unable to login into google chat. I was able to use my gmail app without any issues though. Is this normal?
I did xda and google search on this issue about not being able to login to google chat etc, almost 90% of them said that you have to remove your primary google account which is not possible to do unless you root or do a factory reset.

first, posting on the wrong forum wont make any difference. you need to provide what you did and what happened in between. saying that it wont work will not fix it and no dev can magically make it work.
