[Q] Nook Tablet Ad-hoc Connection Solution? - Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet

Hey guys, I know many of us have android phones as well as our Nook tablets and that lots of us LOVE using the tether app to give our other wifi enabled devices access to our mobile network while on the go. Unfortunately, the bane of android devices is that, while they can create ad-hoc networks, they can't join them, thus limiting our Nook Tablets to infrastructure networks.
However, it seems there is a solution for Nook Color.

Does anyone know if this same solution will work for the nook tablet? I'm a little skittish to try it out myself without it being verified.

I have been using the Wireless Tether app (ver 2.0.7), on my DroidX with my Nook Tablet - no tweaks/hacks needed on the Nook.

I tried this and it doesn't work. I and others have also tried a few other versions of wpa_supplicant without success. Probably this needs to be recompiled for the NT based on the BN source code.
When I have some free time I am going to try to get this part of the bn codebase compiled and go from there. It's going to be a busy week though so it may be awhile.
Another option might be to use bluetooth tethering instead. Another dev is working on enabling bluetooth right now in a different thread.
For those that have phones that work, yes it will work for some phones if your phone does wifi tether as AP. Many phones (i.e. OG Droid) implement adhoc only so that is why some people's phones work and others do not.

USB tether?

Does anyone manage to get USB tether working using any one of the ROM?
This was touched on briefly in another thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=842842), but mostly on wifi tether, and I have not seen any recent posts on this topic. I want to use the gtablet for school and work and USB tethering would be an absolute necessity; any help and assistance on this would be most apprecative.
There are only drivers for Windows, Mac and Linux for USB tether, so doubtful it would work. I tried it anyway, even though I knew the result. Still can not get wifi tether to work.

Sorry, I've been swamped last few days... well the last month actually... but Send me your current /data/misc/wifi/wpa_supplicant.conf file as I can use your current saved networks to build you a working set of files for wifi tether... I'll PM you my email in case I didn't already...
I'm not sure what usb host support has been built so far. My understanding is that in theory the linux network driver should be able to be used in android with some work ofcourse.
I'm not going to root my Gtablet right away so I'll have to wait to see if someone figures out how to wire/wireless tether while it's stock. My rooted Droid 1 is getting bored. LOL

I know this is an old thread, I was wondering if anyone has had any luck with USB tethering at all.
+1 interest in this, or bluetooth tethering. My company is PCI compliant and has wifi blockers all over the building
does ad-hoc run over the same frequencies as wifi?
Client devices that use ad-hoc wifi are licensed for the same FCC spectrum as devices that only use infrastructure wifi, so that makes me assume they use the same frequencies.
I'm only aware of two tethering solutions on android yet, but i'm a noob so there may be more:
1) the wpa supplicant patch. This allows the Android device to tether as a client to another adhoc wifi sharing device.
2) pdanet. This allows the Android device to tether as a server to another non-android client, via bluetooth or USB.
So far, nothing I've seen supports USB tethering client on Android. For now, with your use case I'd recommend a more mature OS like WinXP. With the right software, WinXP can serve as a USB tether client to most modern phones.
Bump...
Would like to be able to USB tether when honeycomb comes out. But would be awesome if it happened earlier.
second that request. USB tethering is so much easier than WiFi hotspotting, not to mention it's free with my current T-mobile plan
Same here. I use ICS via USB tethering from my HTC Touch Diamond to my PC and will get a gTablet when I can use it similarly as a client.
i second this
All of us married folk who are pushed for both time and money (but are still tech adventurous) would love some clear directions (or a script or app) for tethering to their DUN capable regular phones by either BT or USB.
Many thanks in advance to whoever takes up the challenge...
G tablet currently running vegan beta5.1
I concur on this. I use PDAnet with my original droid to tether to laptop. Unfortunately, PDAnet can't be used on Vegan Ginger which I am running on my gTab. Any help would be much appreciated!

From my searching thru Google I found out that the original Droid can bluetooth tether to the Xoom. Not to sure what gives the ability for that to happen but it works. If it's code specific then maybe some tinkering with that might get it to work but if it's hardware specific..again I'm just throwing it out there.
BT tethering is very doable depending on your phone. I use PDANET on my Droid X.
For some deeper info (including a script to get it started on the G-Tab) Look here:

[Q] Any way to connect to ad-hoc network?

My new Touchpad don't seem to support ad-hoc wireless networks. It don't see them or let me join them by entering the SSID (network name) and password. Is there any software I can add or configuration change I can make to change this? I have a Windows Mobile cell phone that can share its connection over wifi, but its ad-hoc only and I use WEP.
Any ideas on what to do about adhoc networks? Any hacks or sideloaded software, if no official apps?
This KILLED me. I bought mine over the weekend while I was on vacation and the hotel had a catch-all page so I couldn't get through registration from that network. I figured no big deal and turned on my hotspot (Moto Photon) and it wasn't showing up. I configured a wifi shared connection on my laptop and it didn't show up. I thought I was insane! Ended up getting annoyed and driving up the road until I found an open network without a catch-all... My wife drove while I scanned for a connection. I know for a fact that they work with the Palm Pre's shared connection. What's up with the haterade HP?
I have an original droid and have this same issue as I understand cyanagen mod allows you to create a non ad hoc WiFi but I can't get a clear answer on this
So far I could not find an app or hack to allow the Touchpad to connect to an adhoc wifi either. I too have a WM phone (HD2). Unfortunately there is also no app for the WM phone that would allow it to broadcast infracstructure (non-adhoc) wifi.

I had this problem also, but you can still make it work. Goto your networks wifi setting and flip the auto switch and wait. It takes some time (almost 5min for me) but it'll pickup the ip address and finish loading the setup pages.
I am trying to use my TP with the wifi from my Touch Pro 2. Any help would be appreciated.
This is a real let down, no ad-hoc support. And our WinMo phone and Motorola Triumph do not support Infrastructure mode.
SoftAP appears to be a requirement to tether with android phones.
Unfortunately my Galaxy Spica does not have this so until some wonderful magical person creates an app/patch which allows the Touchpad to Bluetooth tether or utilise ad hoc wifi networks my tablet will be housebound
also need help with HTC HD2 on winmo 6.5 tethering adhoc with touchpad.
i guess the more realistic solution will be HD2 running android?
For you rooted android phone users http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1238382
I'm really annoyed about this. One of the main things I thought of when buying the touchpad was to tether it to my winmo phone and browse the internet on the move. I hope someone creates a patch soon to enable adhoc wifi.
Really disapointed that I can't tether my iphone 4 to my touchpad.
For the price I can live without gps, sd/micro sd card slot, usb but the not being able to tether this thing is a deal breaker for me.
All I wanted to be able to do with my touchpad is tether for mail, browse the web, music, and be able to watch movies and it seems this thing falls short on everyone of the fronts.
I wonder if its likely anyone will release a patch for WebOS to allow it to recognise and use AdHoc networks?!
Just upgraded my Samsung Galaxy Spica to 2.2 Froyo using kitchen - Enabled portable Wi-Fi Hotspot from the settings menu and now it works perfectly (open or with WPA2 PSK encryption)
Appears this was the only way to get it to work for me as the touchpad was not detecting the adhoc connection on 2.1.
for those with the HD2, try using MCCM HD v6 DESIRE ROM. I can tether to my touchpad with no problems.... first try, no setting tweaks or anything...
Through my searching it was my understanding that Ad-Hoc support could be injected to the touchpad, is there any progress on this front to make it more user friendly? It was pretty heavy linux speak.
Most of the threads I've seen are focusing on Android development for support. What about the webOS side of things?
This is what I'm referencing:
webos-internals
.org/wiki/Ad-Hoc_Networking*
Is there some reason this isn't a viable option? the signal issues? Seems if the method is there than all that it needs is to be more user friendly...

I tried what was described in the thread a few days ago. Ran into issue when trying to execute
/usr/sbin/wifidriver -i
no such file exised....
I have a Samsung Charge with Gummybear. I could not tether at first. I went to the tethering settings and changed the profile to a Samsung Fascinate. Then changed the Setup-Method to softap for Samsung (master). This did not work at first then I shutdown (using the task manager) the tethering app and restarted. Turned my wi-fi on the touchpad off, then on, and my SSID came up. Clicked connect and went to access control and approved my touchpad connection. Now it works.
Hope this helps someone.
Just a heads up for anyone using an iphone 4 with their touchpad.
If you upgrade to ios 4.3.3 or later you can enable wifi hotspot and this hotspot will thether with the touchpad without issue.
I was running ios 4.1 trying to use mywi without success and then decided to try this method and works like a charm.

[Q] Modded Sprint Wifi Hotspot apk

Is there a modded Sprint Wifi Hotspot apk for the Photon 4G that can be used to tether to tablets like the iPad, Touchpad, Xoom, etc in infrastructure mode instead of adhoc mode?
Those apps like Wifi Tether and Barnacle in the android market do not work since they use ad hoc mode. Those apps connect to laptops fine but not tablets.
I believe this may help you out. Maybe, maybe not. Hopefully.

It says "ad hoc" mode right in the first paragraph. So, no, it won't work for the OP's purpose. I'm looking for infrastructure mode as well, but there seems to be no solution available yet.
The xoom had a wpa_supplicant that supports adhoc. Adhoc works natively for the asus eee pad transformer with the most recent ota.

Yes, but since they are so customizable I thought that was something you could disable.

[Q] How to set up a rooted G9 with ICS to see AdHoc

I rooted my Archos 80 G9 to 4.0.5 using the guides here. Thanks to all who wrote them.
I rooted it hoping it could see my adhoc wireless from my rooted Casio GzOne. So far i have not figured out how to share internet with it. The Casio will not send Infrastructure mode so I am at a stand still.
Does anyone know how to make the Archos see a adhoc network?
I need my Transformer Tf101 to see it to.
Donny
I have not been able to do this. I rooted the tablet and it would not work the way it worked on Gen8 Tablet with froyo. So, I downgraded to Honeycomb....I got very close..I can see the Adhoc signal but the signal is very week...and can not obtain ip adress...though it tries to do so....Now I've reverted to ICS since the goal would be to do this on ICS...for most people..but again the same trick half working on Honeycomb is not working on ICS. ICS does not have the tiwlan file as froyo and honeycomb do...
I will keep trying..
meanwhile ....The Bluetooth Tethering is working. ...this can the alternative for people with symbian phone or windows phones. You will need Pdanet for Tablet. If you have an android phones (which usually do not enable DUN by default) then you will need also FoxFi for android.
I know this is not equivalent to Adhoc...but can help those whose need of Adhoc was to connect a phone with not builtin Infrastructure hotspot.

CanĀ“t connect any AD-hoc networks

I have just recently bought one of those brookstone rover to play with but the phone won't connect to it it doesn't even shows is there any patch or something for Gs3 that will enable it to connect to AD-hoc network please help it will be a big help thanks and regards,

We can't connect to ad-hoc networks because android doesn't natively support it.
If you manage to find a wpa_supplicant file for your SPECIFIC S3 model, maybe you get it to work.
My phone is already rooted and yes i can change the file but I just don't know where to look for the file over XDA I don't know which one is the right file if anyone of you can help me it will be appreciated

Try this
But make sure to make a backup/nandroid in case something goes wrong.
EDIT: I wouldn't bother if I were you. Seems like that just prevents the wifi from working all together, invest in a router or buy a program like connectify to make an AP that android can connect to.
mhotspot
use this to create hotspot..
isn't there any rom available for gs3 which supports searching and connecting to adhoc network any rom please help guys i really want to use the Brookstone rover through android
Not to my knowledge, there isn't. Like I said ad-hoc networks aren't natively supported on Android. Either you wait it out till someone provides the necessary modifications or you try and see if you can modify it yourself to support ad-hoc.
Are you certain ad-hoc isn't supported?

My ASUS TF300T can access my hotspot just fine. Both of my GS3's (1 AT&T, 1 VZW) do not even see it as present.
And yes, the TF300T IS running android, it's totally stock.
Not sure how that fits in to "ad-hoc networks aren't natively supported on Android"
That's my 2 cents worth, because I too want to be able to access my hotspot from my phone when I KNOW it can do it, my tablet does. At work I have almost no signal on my phone and would like to have some music while I work. Yes, I know, I can fill the phone with music but I have yet to find an mp3 player with a good shuffle algorythm that doesn't play the same song 3 times while never playing others. (that's a different topic altogether)
