I've recently purchased a Huawei Mediapad Tablet running honeycomb 3.2.
I would like to root this tablet but am unable to find any guides on the web.
Any pointers and guides would be much appreciated.

Yeah, I also bought mediapad last 2 weeks, this honeycomb really unstable, hang/reboot very often. And when I switched to full resolution 1280x800, you can feel lagging. Disappointed with stock ROM.

Recently, I read some reference from some Chinese Forum..
There are Rooted ROMs... and tutorials about how to root by youself..
If you decide to create a rooted rom by yourself..
You need a Linux environment to do that...
Here's how I did mine...
1. First of All, download the latest ROM from Huawei official site..

2. Unzip it, you'll have a folder "dload"
3. Extract the file" system.img.ext4" from the Update.zip
4. Copy the "system.img.ext4" into your Linux Environment..
5. mount the image file like these...
#mkdir /mnt/tmp
#mount -o loop system.img.ext4 /mnt/tmp
6. put the "superuser" binary into the path /mnt/tmp/xbin
#cp su /mnt/tmp/xbin
7. Assgin the correct permission to the su binary
#chmod 6755 /mnt/tmp/xbin/su
8. Unmount the path and copy the system.img.ext4 into the original Update.zip
#umount /mnt/tmp
9. Put the "dload" folder into the root directory of a Micro-SD
10. Power Up your mediapad, when it vibrates, press and hold Volume Down until you see the Android icon, and it will try to flash the new ROM.
11. After everything is done, Look for Super User from Market, you'll see.

you'll have your apps un-touched, while you have the latest system. enjoy~!

Which distro are you using?
I'm having some problems writing to the image after mounting it as a loop back for Ubuntu 10.4

It's been discussed quite a bit in the Hardwarezone forum. I cannot post a link yet, so just google for 'mediapad hardwarezone forum'.
You need to install the HuaweiMediaPadPhone.apk which you can request from those in the forum. You can also find the link for Mediafire on the forum.
Once you install the apk, you will get the standard Phone and Messaging apps which you can use to make phone calls over GSM and also SMS. Working well for me.

Thanks. I had a lab full of Linux systems, so I tried to put the 'su' in myself. Thanks to this fastboot procedure, I have a rooted system with no apps lost.

So did you Root it with a PC?
Could you give me some info on how you did this?
I have sdk r13 & fastboot (is 1.img the file I need to flash?)
It's quite easy. just ensure.
1. Your Android SDK is installed correctly
2. Mediapad Fastboot USB driver is detected
3. get the correct system.img.ext4
4. Ensure fastboot works before issuing the flash command
by doing this you would not lose the current installed apps as this would only flash the
updated system plus root binary. After doing so please download superuser from android market
the flash process take less than 10 minutes.
btw i use this command
fastboot flash system system.img.ext4
yup i use a pc to this.
disclaimer:
there's risk of bricking your mediapad. do it at your own risk.

Also, I don't know if you saw or not, but I lost 4G connection since I originally had a T-Mobile SpringBoard and flashed the Hauwei firmware to it. Do you think rooting it will allow the 4G again? If so, would it be easy for a 'tard like me to do ?
yup that's the right file. I'm using mediapad.
Probably this rom resources file does not have the 4g icon.
Do you still have the same broadband speed?

Also, what do you know about typing ()()2846579()()+ in the calculator. Can anything really be modified here? I've played around with the preferred frequencies and radio bands, but not sure what's really going on. And I think some of it goes back to a default anyway.
I was hoping that something like no 4G icon was the issue, but looking at the speeds (these are test from an area that I know get 4G speeds). I go to:
Settings >Mobile networks>Network operators>Search networks I only see T-Mo and AT&T 2G & 3G

Hi, I've successfully rooted my phone. I have a Huawei Y200.it might be easier if you waited for OneClickRoot do be launched maybe they have the device listed for auto flashing that does everything for you.

But anyway, here's the batch file I think I uploaded it..
So its easy once you root it, but WARNING: DO NOT INSTALL CLOCKWORK MODE AGAIN THROUGH ROM Manager OR ANY SOURCE. (this might bring you into bootloop)
follow steps to use the batch file...
1- You need to do this on your phone: Allow USB Debugging and STAY AWAKE Function, STOP fastboot mode. Now Install ADB Drivers when connecting phone into computer via usb and debugging mode is on (you'll see a drive usually green on your computer, check for "drivers" inside driver folders and install windows drivers.
2- You need to install Android SDK : ==> New User, Can't post links, Search Android SDK..
navigate to default download location: " C:\Program Files\Android\android-sdk\platform-tools ", shift + right click inside the folder with nothing selected, and run command prompt from there. run following command "adb devices" and it should list a device number.
3- Now exctract the zip file in attachement and run these in order: -"adb.exe" then -"fastboot.exe" then -"root_v5.2.bat". It should say a succesfull message and ( as i remember) phone should reboot (if it states "reboot phone now" in cmd prompt). now you shoudl be rooted and see "SuperUser" application installed.
4- Check if you're properly rooted with a "rootchecker" market app. If App requested root access by SuperUser (ofcourse you'll tap Accept right?) and says you have proper root, you can now jump around and scream " I rooted my phone" like i did... You can now Install Link2sd app and enjoy free enternal storage since you've rooted your phone... Any Directions using Link2sd repost or you can search internet... One limitation is you can'r use swap (to increase your RAM ), and have to go through different ROM's. If rooted your phone succesfully please inform and on any questions about ROM switching...

The root process isn't so hard , bit the rom switch what would be important for me (not the method, i know that and i'we installed modified recovery its working...)
Went to hell and back @google to find any custom roms for this little fckr but besides the clean base rom and the ics por (whats not working for me) i could not find any other rom. Sorry my bad i have found one origonal stock rom too, bit besides theese do you know is there any other roms exists for u8655?

This procedure is for CWM, not for root.The root phone you must copy superuser.signed 3.0.7 on memory card, and boot phone in cwm, and install zip from sd card/choose zip from sd card/superuser.signed3.0.7/yes, and reboot system now, when is proces for install zip over.Then your phone is rooted, you think because write ROOT_V5.0.2 it is for root-NO, this for install CWM.

when you say RUN adb.exe fastboot.exe and root.bat what do you mean and where do i run them? ive installed platform tools and have done adb devices//my device is there. i extract the files and run them in cmd and double clicking and it doesnt reboot. i guess im having trouble with the .zip i know the files are good. any help :good:would be appreciated.

Hi there
I did a research about this lock and i found a modified kernel what is capable of unlocking again the bootloader. (Claimed by the author, that it should solwe rhe issue)
Please tell me, since i did not upgraded the firmware due to the issue, could it be true?
Because i did not found any feedback from the users who tried it.
Can we count on another unlockibg method, or is this true that the bl can be unlocked via adb kerbel flash?

I'm trying to root my Huawei Vision U8850. There seems to be only very little information about this phone available, and I've had no luck so far trying various methods.
I've tried SuperOneClick 2.3.3, UnlockRoot, DooMLoRD v4 and some other batch scripts, with no avail. The problem seems to be that the phone is running with Android 2.3.7, and most of the tools are using the Zerg Rush exploit, which seems to have been fixed in 2.3.7.
Zerg Rush always returns a "[-] Hellions with BLUE flames" message, which I suppose means that it failed.
Does anybody know a way of how to get root for this phone?
I've found a Chinese(?) forum where they asked the same question it seems, but I couldn't register there without some sort of code. Maybe somebody knows actually Mandarin/whatever.

I've found a Russian forum with quite much activity regarding the U8850 Vision. Problem is, I don't speak Russian, and registering on that forum requires you to input a Cyrillic CAPTCHA, which of course didn't work with Window's Character Map.

I am however not sure if I understood everything correctly, or if Google Translate was working correctly.
I'm also not sure what exactly the "Russian Channel" firmware will do to my phone (e.g. phone is only in Russion, keyboard is in cyrillic, GPS not working, etc).

Ok, I've successfully performed the root now by creating a custom firmware which includes su, busybox and Superuser.
I've uploaded the firmware here:

To flash the firmware, you will need the "U8850 Upgrade Tool V1.8.4" from here:

This will erase all of your user data, so save anything before you do this. And of course I'm not responsible if anything bad happens to your phone, all I can say is that it worked for me.

You'll need both Windows and Linux to perform this update (e.g. a second computer, multiboot or a virtual machine).
In Windows:
1) Download the "U8850 Upgrade Tool V1.8.4" from here:

2) Download the "U8850 (Android 2.3.7)V100R001C279B244SP22(Slovenia TUS Mobil)" firmware from johnnyparanoia.blogspot.co.uk/search/label/Huawei%20U8850 or madmodder.co.uk/huawei/u8850/huawei-u8850-firmware-list.htm and extract the contained firmware (we need the SFC-244M-0-8025-A03.nb0 file)
3) Download nb0-utils.jar from yadisk.cc/d/MbFUvzN6bic
4) Download busybox from yadisk.cc/d/JIWwvYPNblL
5) Download su from yadisk.cc/d/XtZXIL9rble
6) Download Superuser.apk from yadisk.cc/d/7TQNlhsFbm1
The following steps need to be performed under Linux:
7) Create and navigate to the folder where you want copy the downloaded files to (e.g. "sudo mkdir /home/username/u8850/")
8) Create a folder where you want the firmware to extract to: (e.g. "sudo mkdir /home/username/u8850/extracted/")
9) Copy the downloaded files to the folder you just created in step 7), using a usb flash drive or whatever means you have (e.g. "sudo cp /path/where/they/are/saved/*.* /home/username/u8850/")
10) Go to that folder: "cd /home/username/u8850/"
11) Unpack the downloaded firmware into the "extracted" folder, using the following command: "sudo java -Xmx512m -jar nb0-utils.jar unpack SFC-244M-0-8025-A03.nb0 /home/username/u8850/extracted"
- Note #1: if this doesn't work, try to install Java first: "sudo apt-get install openjdk-6-jre"
- Note #2: extracting the firmware requires quite a lot of RAM, hence we added the "-Xmx512m" flag which allows Java to use up to 512 MB of RAM. Make sure your Linux machine has this much RAM available!
12) The extracted file "SF8-0-244M-0002-system.img.ext3" contains the Android file system, so we need to mount this file.
- To mount it, we first need to create a folder in /media/: "sudo mkdir /media/android"
- And then we mount the file to that location: "sudo mount /home/username/u8850/extracted/SF8-0-244M-0002-system.img.ext3 /media/android/"
13) Copy the previously downloaded "busybox" file to /media/android/xbin/: "sudo cp /home/username/u8850/busybox /media/android/xbin/"
14) Change the file permissions to 755: "sudo chmod 755 /media/android/xbin/busybox"
15) Copy the previously downloaded "su" file to /media/android/bin/: "sudo cp /home/username/u8850/su /media/android/bin/"
16) Change the owner and group of that file to root: "sudo chown root /media/android/bin/su" and "sudo chgrp root /media/android/bin/su"
17) And the rights to 6755: "sudo chmod 6755 /media/android/bin/su"
18) Copy the previously downloaded "Superuser.apk" file to /media/android/app/: "sudo cp /home/username/u8850/su /media/android/app/"
19) And change the permissions to 644: "sudo chmod 644 /media/android/app/Superuser.apk"
20) Now unmount the image file again: "sudo umount /media/android"
21) And pack the firmware again into a .nb0 file: "sudo java -Xmx512m -jar nb0-utils.jar pack /home/username/u8850/firmware_rooted.nb0 /home/username/u8850/extracted/"
Now we're finished in Linux, the actual flashing has to be done in Windows.
22) Somehow transfer the newly created firmware_rooted.nb0 file to Windows (e.g. with a USB stick).
23) Unpack and install the "U8850 Upgrade Tool V1.8.4". This will install a "SUT L3" program ("Software Update Tool") and the USB drivers for the U8850 Vision.
24) Connect your phone with a USB cable and use the Software Updater to flash the firmware_rooted.nb0 to the phone.
Don't get (too) nervous during the flashing and booting procedure, it does take quite a while.
After completion, all of your data will be reset and the phone should now be rooted. To check, use e.g. "Root Checker" from the market or any app that needs root rights.

I haven't noticed any particular problems which I could connect to the rooting process. Yesterday it did take the phone quite a while before getting a GPS fix, but it has done that before (seems to be a general problem for me, even with AGPS settings), but GPS itself was working fine after that.
I'm also having some issues where the internal partition (resp. the /system/ folder) reports an error that there's no space left on the device, e.g. when trying out AdAway instead of AdFree Android. And the latter was working fine.
Besides that, it's working fine. I can call / be called, camera is working, music is working, radio is working (if you can call that working).
I haven't figured out yet how to install the Clockworkmod Recovery yet though. It's still requiring a valid certificate for the update.zip on the Recovery screen, that hasn't changed.

Ok, I've successfully performed the root now by creating a custom firmware which includes su, busybox and Superuser.

To flash the firmware, you will need the "U8850 Upgrade Tool V1.8.4" from here:

This will erase all of your user data, so save anything before you do this. And of course I'm not responsible if anything bad happens to your phone, all I can say is that it worked for me.

I've labelled this method the "Russian Root", because I found the initial instructions on a Russian forum. I've translated the instructions and added anything missing to it.

Nevermind, it was the filename that confused the Update Tool, changed the filename to a shorter one and it worked, it flashed it, now booting.

Yes, I'm afraid Dropbox doesn't really like public links, they've disabled that feature temporarily for my account. Although I severly doubt I've really reached the limit of 20 GB/day for this single file...
I've uploaded the file to Mediafire now, although I had to split the archive to make that work. I hope it'll live longer there.

since you have rooted, you can use it. why would you need jellybeamv3?
This version is Mac only sorry, will update for PC this week.
Directions:
1.) Download from https://www.dropbox.com/s/4zd9rz3akcr8zht/lollipop.zip?dl=0[1][1] to your desktop. (file size 124 mb), and extract it the zip.
2.) Open up terminal, and type navigate to the file via cd/Desktop/lollipop .That code only works if the extracted file is actually called lollipop and is in your desktop.
3.) Type sh runMe.sh into the terminal and just follow on screen instructions.
Short version of what it does: Used adb to unlock bootloader, Roots it, Copies over 5.0.1, Writes to cache, and reboots. Then optional install of TWRP recovery.
This code isn't specific to the G Watch, to make it work for your phone, just add two files...
Replace:
update.zip with your factory image of lolipop
LGGW-rootboot.img with temporary boot image for your device to give it root, can find this on forums like XDA TWRP (optional) custom recovery
Be sure to keep the file names the same, as that is what the script looks for! I'm too lazy now, but only 2 things need to be done to make it work for PC...
1.) Get the adb drivers and fastboot, and put it in the lollipop folder, make sure you keep the names the same as the ones in there now.
2.) On the script called runMe and called, everywhere it says ./fastboot or ./adb-mac, get rid of the ./ part, so it would just say fastboot or adbmac

Intro
This is a guide for people who want to make some modifications to config files, or other files, on System partition but do not want to root their phone or install custom recovery in order to keep OTAs and some apps, which don't play nicely with rooted phones, working. Examples of those config mods could be changing DPI or changing volume levels etc, which you would only do once and forget about it.
While root allows you to do those kinds of changes from within android, this methods would require a PC.
If you are familiar with temporary booting into a custom recovery, skip to step 5.
The usual i am not responsible for any of your actions / bricked phones disclaimer applies.
Prerequisites
- A working adb / fastboot environment. Please use Android SDK, if you installed your adb and fastboot using other tools, things might not work, so please just install SDK, install Google USB Driver from SDK manager, install Platform-Tools from SDK manager (should be installed by default) and then add your sdk platform-tools path to your PATH environment variable to have it available in cmd in every path.
- Unlocked bootloader
- TWRP image for you phone (.img) https://twrp.me/devices/huaweinexus6p.html
Follow the [GUIDE] Unlock/Root/Flash for Nexus 6P for that.
Instructions
Here is an example of modifying DPI. I prefer build.prop method of modifying DPI because using the adb wm density command usually caused some issues for me, but modifying via build.prop didn't.
1 - With you phone ON, connect it to the PC and make sure adb is working by running

2 - Reboot into bootloader. and make sure fastboot is good to go too. Run commands one at a time:

3 - Place your TWRP image file in some easily accessible folder, for the sake of this example i will use C:\Mods.
4 - Temporary boot into TWRP (we are not flashing it here at all).

fastboot boot c:\Mods\twrp-2.8.7.0-angler.img
Here is where things may not work. If you don't see your phone boot into TWRP then either your adb / fastboot environment not setup correctly (installed via a tool instead of SDK) or your img file is corrupt.
One thing that works for me when TWRP refuses to boot is to restart cmd and issue the command again this closes and reopens adb/fastboot daemon.
5 - Once TWRP is up on your phone it may display a warning saying "TWRP has detected an unmounted system partition". Swipe to allow modifications at the bottom. This screen may not come up at all.
6 - Go to Mount >>> Tick System >>> Make sure "Only Mount System Read Only" is unticked >>> Press Back button
7 - Back on your PC check if your device is listed

8 - Pull the file you need to modify from system partition to your PC. Please note the direction of the slashes:

9 - Now you should see build.prop in your c:\Mods folder. Use Notepad++ or something like that to edit the file. Find the line with lcd_density= and change it's value to whatever you need and save the file.
10 - Push the file back to your phone:

12 - Profit.
Hope this will help anyone who is looking to do some mods without installing custom recovery and rooting your phone.

Works are per OP's original post, tested and boosted the headphone volume without a problem.
Headphone path is /system/etc/mixer_paths.xml
So as per OP's example to pull: adb pull /system/etc/mixer_paths.xml c:/Mods
push: adb push c:/Mods/mixer_paths.xml /system/etc
I'm using the OP's "Mods" folder to demonstrate the file path but this may vary on your PC.

You can certainly push the files to system partition and they will retain there after reboot. So if you know which files have to be pushed for SuperSU then give that a go. It shouldn't break anything.
I haven't tried pushing SuperSU files to system partition before so I can't guarantee that OTAs will work after this. The only way to find out is to try it i guess...

okay so after i did this i get the following during boot up
"Your device is corrupt. It can't be trusted and may not work properly". Does this mean i will not get Securty Updates any more? I saw i had an update before i performed this however, now i do not see that update notifications any more.

I got this too when I flashed MOAB via adb sideload. I'm just wondering if the same warning appears with the adb push method. Also, the file's permissions don't need to be set after adb push?
My main concern is if Android Pay still works with the red triangle warning. Anyone?
FYI Flashing back to stock is no issue for me.

I think if you get the latest TWRP which supports decryption of data partition (where all your stuff is) you should be able to back it up.

Thanks for trying it out! Sometimes OTA notifications take a little while to come up after reboot. But based on the warning Im afraid that they might be disabled now. It looks like it runs some sort of a check on the system partition to verify its legitimacy. So modifying files would be fine on it using this method but looks like adding them won't work.
TWRP just released their recovery with decryption support so you can just follow the standard procedure or just temporary booting into TWRP and rooting from there which works as well.

On your Nexus5 I assume you are also unrooted? And have you tried a Nandroid restore, booted TWRP, no root?

My daughter got an Fire HD 6 in the christmas days and we started to play around and we have done all updates up to 5.3.1.1. But it's not running perfectly for my wishes. I have read thats it's possible to root the tablet incl. TWRP, xposed framework and go with this up to 5.3.1.1 but it's hard to read out what I have exactly to do because there are many warnings when to do something and when not.
Could you please help what to do exactly? ADB is running and phone is recognizing on Mac and Windows...

From latest news, OS 5.3.1 can't be rooted(directly). You'll need to downgrade to 4.5.3, root, and go back to 5.3.1 as explained here
If you want to feel android experience, you can either install custom launcher and Play Store from here or just totally install Cyanogenmod 11 from here

@Killa8, as I mentioned HERE in more detail, the procedure for downgrading to 4.5.3 doesn't appear to be explained in the linked tutorial. Any help would be greatly appreciated! I'm trying to root and install CM on my daughter's tablets as they find Android to be far more intuitive than FireOS. Many thanks!!!

NVM i found a video tutorial
I've seen too many threads mentioning 5.3.1 and implying that 5.3.1.1 is the same.
Even if that is the case, all the tutorials I have read left me scratching my head at various points. So here is a walkthrough of what I just went through to root my Kindle fire HD 6
It's now running 5.3.1.0 and will stay there for the time being (unless I can get solid answers on 5.3.1.1).
I started with this tutorial thread but I found it easy to make mistakes and I ended up bricking my device (fortunately the unbrick iso is very good and the tutorial video is excellent).
So here is my procedure. Doing this on Windows is probably less involved thanks to the bat file in one of the steps.
Start by getting the stuff you will need together.
You will need ROMs from here.
Specifically, the 4.5.3 and 5.3.1.0 ROMs.
The 4.5.3 file name is update-kindle-20.4.5.3_user_453011120.bin
The 5.3.1.0 file name is update-kindle-20.5.5.2_user_552153420.bin
Note: The version number on that second file makes no sense to me, and I made a mistake trying to flash the wrong one in TWRP. Here is the correct name for reference. You might change the file names to reflect the version number.
Go ahead and change the extension of the 5.3.1.0 bin file to zip instead. TWRP will need it this way.
Download the stock recovery image. There is a link at the bottom of the second post in the tutorial thread I linked above. Or you can just click here.
Grab the WindowsAutoTWRP_v03.zip from the tutorial thread (or click here).
It has the Windows ADB executable and drivers in it so it will save you some hassle on a Windows machine.
For Macs, I found a video from RootJunkie.com that linked to tools at http://rootjunkysdl.com/files/?dir=Adb%20Fastboot%20Files. I was able to do everything from my Mac with these.
As a side note, the video I found these on was https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iv0VcNM8IAw, but it's not important to watch.
It will help to gather zips and APK files you will need right now as well.
Get a copy of ES file explorer, Kingroot (I used the APK, but if you have a windows system, it might be easier to use the Windows version instead), and an android launcher of some sort.
For additional images, you will need the following:
From the tutorial thread: make_space_v02.zip
Supersu.zip linked at https://download.chainfire.eu/696/SuperSU/UPDATE-SuperSU-v2.46.zip
Xposed which if you follow the link from the tutorial through the forum thread should lead you here: http://dl-xda.xposed.info/framework/sdk22/arm/. I grabbed xposed-v87-sdk22-arm.zip
flash Pico (Uni) GAPPS for 5.1 which again, if you follow all the links, will take you here: https://basketbuild.com/filedl/devs?dev=osm0sis&dl=osm0sis/gapps/tk_gapps-modular-pico%28uni%29-5.1.1-20150920-signed.zip.
Make sure you have all the files gathered in one place, it's really helpful.
If you are using a Mac, you will also need Android File Transfer at https://www.android.com/filetransfer/.
Something optional that might help is a USB OTG cable or one of those USB drives that support USB OTG with its own micro USB connector. It's not necessary but it might help if you need to get files to your tablet in TWRP.
At this point, I'm going to go into Mac instruction mode. If you know that the Windows command prompt is sort of like the terminal application on OS X, that you don't use ./ path specifies on windows, etc, you should be able to come up with some
Once you have everything in place, shut down your Kindle Fire 6.
On your computer, open a terminal window and get to where you unzipped your ADB tools.
The simple way is to type cd followed by a space then drag the folder with your tools from finder to the terminal widow so you get something like cd /users/me/abd
The actual path will be dependent on your system.
This terminal window should remain open for the entire process. It will make life easier.
Hold volume up and turn the Kindle Fire on. You should enter recovery.
Back at your computer type ./adb devices
Your kindle should show up there. When it does, go back to your tablet and select "apply update from ADB".
Then, from the terminal, enter ./adb sideload 4.5.3 file name is update-kindle-20.4.5.3_user_453011120.bin
If you just type ./adb sideload then drag the file into the terminal window, it will fill the name and path out for you.
Note that this all seems kind of like the video I linked above but we are downgrading to 4.3.5 instead as the tutorial thread says we should.
Once that's done, you end up back at the recovery screen. I went ahead and did a wipe data/factory reset. I don't know if this is necessary though.
When you get into 4.5.3, you need to shut down wifi if you are not prompted through new device setup.
If you are prompted, just skip it.
You may need to enable debugging. Go to setting, device options, find the serial number field and tap it 7 times.
Open the now revealed developer console and toggle "enable ADB" so it's on.
Install the APKs you downloaded earlier.
Use ./adb install <name of ES file explorer apk>
If you're on Windows, you can go ahead and run the Windows root util.
If you are on a Mac, install the Kingroot APK using the ./adb install command.
If you go the APK route, Kingroot requires a wifi connection. This will expose you to Amazon's OTA updates. You will need to watch your Kindle carefully at this point.
The download with probably download but as long as you don't let it sleep, it should not reboot and install.
Kingroot may take a couple of tries to get root.
As soon as it does, turn off wifi!
After that, open ES file explorer, give it root permissions, then navigate to the root folder, then to cache. Look for a bin file there. If there is nothing, you didn't get the OTA update pushed to you. If you did, delete it. See post 5 in this thread: https://forum.xda-developers.com/kindle-fire-hdx/help/deleting-downloaded-update-t3100573
To prevent any OTA relapses until we can go further, use ES file explorer to rename /system/etc/security/otacerts.zip. I replaces the first o and last p with _ characters.
It should be safe to turn on wifi at this point.
If you deleted a bin file in /cache, you aren't out of the woods yet. The Kindle could still reboot on you and it will give you the red ! but I found booting into recovery then just rebooting the Kindle caused it to work itself out after a couple tries.
We should be good to go for TWRP at this point.
In the terminal type ./adb shell
When the shell opens type su
Grant the shell permissions on the Kindle
Type exit twice.
On a Mac, we cannot run the bat file included in the WindowsAutoTWRP_v03.zip file.
But here are the commands to enter manually:
./adb devices
./adb install gscript-android.apk
./adb shell "mkdir /sdcard/gscript"
./adb push gscript /sdcard/gscript/
./adb shell "cp /sdcard/gscript/flash_453_stay.sh /data/local/tmp/"
./adb shell "ls /data/local/tmp/"
./adb shell "su -c 'chmod 777 /data/local/tmp/flash_453_stay.sh'"
./adb shell "su -c 'sh /data/local/tmp/flash_453_stay.sh'"
Once complete open ES file explorer again
DELETE sdcard/gscripts/s5.4.1_113_stock_recovery_uboot.zip!!!!!!!
It's too easy to mistakenly flash this in TWRP and it WILL brick your kindle.
We will now copy those zip files we downloaded earlier onto the Kindle.
I used the Android file transfer unity to put them in the scripts folder but copying them to Downloads on the Kindle might be easier.
If you are a command line type of person, you can also use the adb push command.
You want to copy over the following:
The 5.3.1.0 file name is update-kindle-20.5.5.2_user_552153420.bin
5.5.2_1534_stock_recovery_uboot.zip
UPDATE-SuperSU-v2.46.zip (or whatever the current version you downloaded is)
make_space_v02.zip
xposed-v87-sdk22-arm.zip (or whatever the version you downloaded is. The version could have changed after I wrote this.)
tk_gapps-modular-pico(uni)-5.1.1-20150920-signed.zip (again, based on what version was available when you downloaded it)
It might be a good time to sideload that extra launcher you downloaded earlier. I didn't need it, but you might.
Again the command is ./adb install <apk file name>
In the terminal, type ./adb reboot recovery.
You *should* end up in TWRP.
These next steps are important to do in one go. Don't exit TWRP until you have installed all the zip files you copied over.
The order in the tutorial thread is the 5.3.1.0 system image, the recovery image, the make_space zip, the Supersu zip, the xposed zip, and the tk_gapps-modular-pico(uni)... zip.
Do all this from the Install menu in TWRP. I did not try to queue up all the zip files at once, I don't know if that would work.
If you forgot to copy a file, TWRP should allow you to copy files via a USB cable to your tablet.
If you do this on a Mac and Android file transfer craps out on you as it did with me, that is where the USB OTG cable comes in handy. But lets hope you copied everything or that the USB connection doesn't crap out on you.
Select the wipe menu, then advanced wipe. Check the cache and dalvik cache. Once done use the back arrow and swath the "swipe to factory reset" slider.
If you are brave, you can just reset and wait through the fire logo.
If you are trying to follow along with the tutorial I linked, reboot while holding volume up to see what recovery you land in. If it's not TWRP, proceed.
When you finally get to Android, you can use ES file explorer as one way to check for root privileges. I'm sure there are others.
I'm no expert, but if you run not problems with the Kindle Fire HD 6 (4th gen) and you started with 5.3.1.1, I can tell you some of the pitfalls I ran into and how I got out of them.

I'm a total new comer to rooting and getting my hands dirty with android (although I am a long time linux user), and i made it work, and now have a fire hd 6 that I can sort the way I want it!
I did encounter a few problems though, first, I did not do a factory reset /data wipe after the downgrade and ended up in a boot loop. This was easily sorted by using the "adb reboot recovery" command, doing the data wipe/reset and then holding down power for 20 sec.
Everything was smooth sailing again until the reboot out of TWRP after installing the ZIP files. I did the wimps reboot to recovery to make sure I didn't get TWRP, which I didn't, so rebooted to get into android, however I entered a boot loop again. This time a simple hold the power for 20 sec and then turn on worked and the system started it's 'optimization'.
Upon completion, i still had root, although ES and my chosen launcher had gone, so had to reinstall them. No problems there though.

hi guys i have a question I'm on cm11 on fire hd 6 i also have a android backup of 4.5.3 my question is I'm note sure what boot loader i have at one point it did have 5xxx on it but not sure what version can i just side load 5.4.0 and be okay since the stock rom was put back to 4.5.3 thats how i installed cm11 or does it need boot loader from a 5xxx rom
