I just sold my transformer and one of my largest issues was the tablet could not play h264 movies. They ran very slowly, some apps would play the movie with no sound, others would play the sound but both the video and sound were very slow. Anyways you look at it, the transfomer could not handle bluray quality h264 movies.

4Gb limitation is not entirely an Android limitation, it's a FAT32 limitation.
Nvidia's demo showed the Transformer Prime playing high profile 1080P video.
Yes Asus Prime will play your h264.
And it can handle 4GB + files

yes its a fat32 storage limitation.
if you want bigger files (eg a h264 mkv) it must be on your
internal storage (which is ext3/4 formatted) or you have to format
your sd-card as ext3/4, which will make it unreadable from windows.
correct me if im wrong
propaply there is a windows-ext3/4 tool where you could r/w ext partitions?
Any chance HC or ICS can read exFAT? That would solve cross compatibility and file size problems.

Maybe the kernel devs get NTFS working properly...
I would rather go for a ext3/4 tool for windows and make the sd ext3

On the swedish android site swedroid.se forum there are a guy from Asus that can answer questions about Prime.
On Primes internal storage they have no problem with big files, they have tried with a 7gd+ and that work good.
"ANTIFISH" explained it good.
If you use MicroSD the limitations are 4GB because of fat32,
If you connect a hard drive that is NTFS the Prime can mount it and handle files that are bigger than 4GB.
This is way I going to buy the 64GB version, but just because the MicroSD can't handle big files and you have to use the Primes storage for those files.

Is it possible to format the MicroSD card as NTFS? Wouldn't this solve the problems while still allow the MicroSD card to be writable/readable in Windows PCs?
I thought the original Transformer could read NTFS. I thought I remembered reading that someone hooks up a usb hard drive to their dock and plays movies off of it and that it was formatted NTFS.
I'm a heavy Linux guy (since '93), but I'd rather have it place nice with NTFS then exFAT. I can r/w NTFS just fine now thanks to ntfs-3g. Just format the sdcard as NTFS when and the problem should be solved for large files.
I've been waiting for the Prime because it can play High Profile 4.0 h.264 video in hardware.
I've already converted my entire movie/tv collection into h.264 files last spring. Took me three months with six computers working 24x7. I have over 2800 movie and tv files to watch now. Should keep me busy for several years.
I've always ran a custom rom on the original and was able to read NTFS with my drive hooked up. Don't know about stock stock..

I think i will be better to go with the dock and a small usb drive or stick. Instead of 32gb more you can have nearly 200gb more and you can transfer the movies from the disk to the Transformer.
On my original Transformer I was always able to use ES File Explorer to read files from my PC.
I was also able to stream movies and music via this app. I wonder if that would work on the prime also?
My hope is to store more on my nas and less on my tablet!

Use BSPlayer (lite). It has an integrated file manager with smb support. Another option is to transfer and watch the movie at the same time.

Yea I'm curious about this too. Most TV shows and movies you find online in HD nowadays seem to be in .mkv format.
There is a video on YouTube of Prime playing .mkv file (which is said to be h264 high profile 1080p video) without any problems.

Hi,I have a lot of 1080p movies-mkv and all of them are more then 4GB.
I formatted my SD card to NTFS settings.
I copied the movie but when I disconnect my phone,He give me a notice that I must to format the SD card.
How do I solve this issues?
Thanks.
You need to format the SD card using FAT32. I think there is a 4 GB file size limit, but not positive. If so, you'll need to split your .mkv files into two pieces.
I knew this option(=to split the file) but why the hell in this superphone I can't copy a file larger then 4GB to SD or to my memory?
Samsung probably uses FAT32 for compatibility reasons. Pretty sure FAT32 is the standard for SD cards. Maybe the SGS2 can recognize a different format. Definitely won't be NTFS though.
You could also compress the videos.
NTFS is created and owned by Microsoft. They probably want some money if you sell devices with it, if they allow it at all. SGS2 has no problems with larger files if you use an open source file-system like ext4.

How do you format a SD card with ext4? Clockwork Recovery? Also, what do you need to do in order for a PC to recognize it?
It's because there are no drivers for reading an NTFS file system. Having a 4gb mkv file and playing it on your SGS2 is a waste anyways. There are no benefits to pumping such high bitrate/resolution unless you're doing HDMI out.

Hi XDA community
In what format should I convert videos for the Asus Transformer Prime, for a good quality.............
I have a movie (1.25 GB avi.) -> (. 3.12 GB MP4) format.
Used program =
- Xilisoft Video Converter Ultimate
- Profil Motorola Xoom / H.264 Video
- 1280x720
[Q]
- Is this normal (1.87 GB more)?
- Are there any conversion settings for the Prime (size, format, etc.)?
- Which program would you recommend?
Thank you for your help

You don't need to convert anything. You can play avi, mkv, wmv with a third party app.
I heard that Dice player is good. In my phone I used Mobo player or Mxvideo player.
thanks all
Missing Video Conversion
The conversion I'd like to understand is .wtv to playable on Android.
We've got quite a few computers in this household running Windows Media Center. They record OTA HD TV on a house server in .wtv (MSFT proprietary) format. But none of the players I've tried play .wtv out of box, yet.
And when the Win 8 slates appear, they WILL interoperate with .wtv and be harder to dislodge. So this would be a good time to source .wtv format files in a DLNA scheme.
I'm having issues playing WMV or M4V from BluRay digital copies.
Is there something that will play these types of files? MX Player does not work.
I don't have a wmv or m4v file at hand but you could try dice player. It's my favorite so far.

These are heavily DRMed. If you did not get a Digital Copy version that is compatible with Android then you are screwed. The WMV is a heavily DRMed Windows file, and the M4V is for iTunes. Only a few BluRays were released that had an Android version too.
Honestly, if you have a BluRay player in your PC is easier to rip it to another format. Otherwise, you have to breach the DRM and convert it to a non-DRM version.
I hate the digital copy stuff, but the Ultraviolet stuff is kinda neat. At least you can use the Flixster (Movies) app to view them streaming on Android. However, only a few use it and its still a DRM nightmare.

Tell me about it! It's like I'm getting punished for "doing the right thing".
To be honest - I got the Back to the Future BR trilogy (I'm one of those huge nerdy fans) and thought: "Sweet, as a bonus - I'll get to play this back anywhere!" So I loaded up the M4V into iTunes (which works just fine with my Apple TV).
But I tried getting the movies on my tablet - where they really count (especially during travel) - and nothing.
It really is hard to "be good" when you pay for a product and then have to jump through hoops and over hurdles (wasting hours of your own time) to make use of something you OWN.
I can open up any BT client and get the full HD-BR rips in FAR less time than it'll take me to figure out how to get my rightfully purchased copies onto a media player (that I also own).
Thanks for the tips everyone!

The 4 GB limit is a FAT32 filesize limit. Only the SDCARD is FAT32 so this is should not true of the internal storage. If you download the file on your prime and store it on the internal storage it should work fine. If you need to put in on your SDCARD than you would need to split them or compress them to be under 4GB since it would be FAT32. Or you can store it some where else and stream it (if were are talking videos and on topic).
Try DVD Catalyst.
I use that to convert MY DVD's to work on my Nook Color. I have not looked if there is a preset for the Transformer Prime yet but I did copy some movies that I converted for the Nook to my TP and they look great.
Try EXTFAT
I formatted my external sdcard as extfat in Windows 7 and have a 7.50 gb blueray movie on it which plays flawlessly.
I know everyone keep giving high praise to MX Player but it has fail to HW decode all of my various MKV files. As for file size limitation, ATP can read NTFS just fine.

I havent had any problems with MX.
It plays every MKV I throw at it, even those with heavily animated subtitles.
Full disclosure: They were all 720p, perhaps the HW v. SW decoding doesn't become seriously relevant until 1080?
Whenever I try to copy an MKV file to my Prime, there is a loooooooong delay where nothing happens, then finally a screen pops up that says something like "this file might not play properly, are you sure you want to copy it?". When I hit "yes", it copies just fine.
Does anyone know of a way to keep this from happening? My MKV files play just fine with MX Video player, so it's a pain to have to deal with this annoying delay every single time.

Depends where that file type check is done. If it's in the USB driver, there is no way of getting rid of it other than hack the driver or use another one.
Do you use Asus software to copy the file or do you just use the prime as usb storage and copy it?
My Prime is on it's way to me, as soon as it's here I'll upgrade to ICS (rollout in Germany just began) and check on movie files.
Same on every Android device.
Got the question you get with everyone of my Android devices I have had. but I don't have that delay you mention.
Isn't even a problem, just click yes.
This message is just a heads up that it might not work properly. And how can Android or Windows know if you have installed a program that can play those files?
Think the problem is more your computer than Prime. when it comes to send files its most time the computer that is the problem.
Sent from my Transformer Prime TF201 using xda premium
Problem is that the Prime connects as an MTP device. This in conjunction with the MTP/USB driver used could be the problem. Run "devmgmt.msc" from Win+R to get to the device manager and check if "Asus MTP device" is properly installed, if not, update the driver (if possible).
Question pops up instantaneously for me.
I think this is DRM related issue. It seems like the prime has no option (or purposely removed) to be mounted as Mass USB Storage. The only option available is to mount it as MTP or as a Camera.
I can copy small files in and out fine with MTP. However, I think it checks for file types and warn/deny certain ones that the prime should not be able to play, even though you have an app installed you know can play it. It's really annoying specially when copying multiple files and you come back to your computer to find out it stopped copying because of a stupid warning or question.
Whenever I copy large or small .mkv files, explorer.exe just tanks and quits. I think ICS or some DRM app is doing this on purpose for movie files. .avi files seems fine but gives a warning. But when all else fails, I can pull out the external sdcard and copy the files through a reader.
Is there a way to force it to mount as as a USB Mass Storage device like my other android device? Or was this option removed now from ICS as Google gets stricter with DRM related issues? I wonder if the Nexus can be mounted as a USB Mass Storage rather than MTP?
Any ideas guys?
PS. It's kind of silly that they brag you play HD movies and the screen can show them in HD, but you can't copy any HD formatted files either because of DRM restrictions or the sdcard format can only handle movies with 4gb or less (which is not HD quality anymore). The only thing its good for is to shoot your own HD videos with the camera and play that video in HD, which you can do with your phone better since it's smaller and easier to maneuver.
And they say the new T700 is coming out with 1080p, I say its useless unless they can mount the drives with ntfs or ext4 with faster read/write throughput to prevent lags.
I can't explain the delay before getting the prompt, but here's an explanation straight from a Google engineer for why the Prime doesn't have USB Mass Storage enabled.

Pfft, at least you can copy MKV files to your Prime directly . I had to transfer 13GB of files to a USB, transfer them to my netbook and then from the Netbook to my MicroSD card in an SD card adapter all because my MicroSD to USB adapter broke and I can't transfer directly to the Prime

That still doesn't explain why some files would transfer fine while others do not. Have you tried transferring a .mkv file (let say 2gb) and see if it works? It crashes for me. As for other file types, I get ask stupid questions.

It wasn't meant to explain that. It was only meant to explain why there is no USB Mass Storage.
I highly doubt it's a DRM problem because I'm able to copy .mkv files over. The only thing I have to do is confirm that I want to copy it, because it will complain that it might not be able to play that file type.
FYI
Android is smth like linux (FAT drive) you are UNALBE to TRANSFER ANY SINGLE FILE MORE THAN 2GB thru usb.
micro sd card is limit to 4 GB if i'm not wrong.
the BEST solution is network transfer with ES file explorer, itz good to invest on NAS aka network drive now, SCREW USB.
set yourself free, no more limitation and driver ****...
aragorn182,
So you can copy .mkv files fine. Hmm I guess I'll try reformatting my micro sdcard coz its acting flaky and try again. Thanks, at least I have some confirmation it works for others. Funny thing is, I can copy into it if I pull it out and put it into my card reader.
With regards to NAS. I already have NAS at home and the WD Live (3 of them) so I can watch movies in each room. Problem is, I want to watch movies on my tablet when I'm traveling long flights (starting to tire of carrying my laptop, tablet is so much lighter). At home, Its kind of useless to watch movies on my tablet when my TV is bigger and I have media players to play them. Lol, even my computer monitor is bigger
u can use network transfer to ur prime...not asking u to stream...
you wont have any problem with file size or type when using network transfer to your prime. since u have NAS make for use of it.
I've copied a few gigs of MKVs to my Prime (both internal storage and microsd) and had no problems. Windows 7 does tells me the little error message about how the thing might not play the format back properly (I wonder why that error shows up considering the Prime can at least playback H.264 with AAC audio in MKV using the native video player).
Did you disable Asys Sync on your tablet? I noticed once I disabled that, transfer speeds were a lot faster.
Ok finally worked. I reformatted the micro sdcard in FAT32 and ran read/write test on it to make sure it is not bad. Tried it again twice and it worked both times. Thanks guys. Really weird problem, something must have gotten corrupted. I have also tried wireless transfer and it work flawlessly. I think that will be my preferred method of transfer now.
Thank you everyone.

The file system that android uses does not support files over 4gigs. If you want something larger, you have to split the file
i thought all 720p videos were over 4gigs?
I have bleach 720p mkv files thats are 280mb and there 30min long. i use to use vital player but Mx video player is my daily use now. it plays everything
With some hackery to the Kernel and ROM the sdcard can be made to run ext4 or NTFS instead of FAT32, allowing files up to the full size of the sdcard. But then you run into issues swapping the sdcard to other devices as not everything supports those filesystems, so might not read it.
I haven't yet bothered to do this with the note.. maybe on my to-do list if I get a bigger SD card
In my experience, only files up to 2gb will play.

Dice Player is playing all my MKVs regardless of size. I've played files up to 4GB perfectly fine, no audio or lag issues.
Hello
Sorry if this has been covered before. I have searched and couldn't find anything.
I have ordered the SGSIII and a 64GB Micro SD. I would like to get it loaded with content before the phone arrives next week and wondered what the best software / settings would be?
Most of the content will be 720 / 1080P and because of the size of the Micro SD I would like the best quality possible.
Do I even need to convert videos or does the SGSIII support .MKV's?
Thanks for your Help.
The phone supports most of the formats including MKVs so you don't have to convert anything.
If you want the highest quality, use a 1080 file which is something like 7-8 GB and it will play smoothly on the S3.

It'll play MKVs fine, if you have ones with subs and so forth then Dice Player or MX Player from the Play Store may be better (I prefer Dice myself, does DTS audio and previously the Samsung player has not).
For reference, my video test shoot out for the Galaxy Note:
I use handbrake or Tools4movies, or iVi Pro.
These have presets, but if not S3 plays lots of formats, pick something else what you own, eg Apple TV, WD media player and use that format then can play on both devices

The stock player supports subs and everything. The subs don't even need to be the same exact name as the video file, the player will give you an option to choose the subtitle file.
I think this is the first stock video player that I'll be sticking with because it's got everything..

Only problem is that (at least in my case) the SDHC can't hold files above 4Gigs.

Is that right? Is that because of the file system the SDHC needs to be for the SGSIII to see it? I hadn't thought of that. So all video files will need to be smaller than 4GB?

GS3 supports exFAT format out of the box, which means that it doesn't have the 4 GB file size limitation.
You might have to format your card to exFAT in the computer though.

Okay, thought exFAT also had a cap of 4Gigs. Will format it later tonight. Thanks for the heads up ;]

Sony Tablet S: Can't accept exFAT or Micro SD -> SD adapter, so idk on NTFS.
Samsung Galaxy S: Can't accept either exFAT nor NTFS.
So.... Hoping ICS DOES support either of those..

ICS may or may not, but the S3 does, it's confirmed. Check the link below:

Unless they've dramatically improved the subtitles support the stock players subtitle support will be very average and not well suited to people who watch a lot of subtitled things.

Yes, that could be..
But I did see a video of the stock player using subtitles and everything.. Maybe won't give the level of control some people need though.

Thanks for all your help with this.
Looks like I don't have to bother converting and can put 1080P files over 4GB on to my Micro SD ready for the SGSIII.
