This is a subject that really has bothered me for a long time. WHY DO I HAVE DUPLICATES!
I'm not yelling at anyone, but damn I'm frustrated. And on top of having duplicates and even triples. Now for some damn odd reason half my contacts won't even dial out because at some point the system decided to take my contacts at random and add +1-315- in front of the number..
There was a point in Touchwiz i could just delete all and restore from sd and they would be neat again. But that day has past. I have been contemplating wagging a war on my now 400+ contact list, but have that small doubt that this fascinate will go down without a fight. I have tried to search for reason within the twisted realm of google, and the deepest directories of my phone. I was going to call google themselves and ask why their Android sucked so bad in the contact department, but i used (google voice search) and said "call google".... And just when the phone went to dial the little troll inside it added a +1 in front of the number, so the call never even rang through.
All this hopeless nonsense dealing with a part of the phone that should be so straight forward brings forth the 1 big question
Where is John Connor.

I had that problem one time. I just deleted everything and only use google now to sync contacts... dont use verizon back up assistant or anything else.
I too has this problem it was resolved when I only used my Google account for contacts. At one point I had two personal accounts and my work contacts, it is fustrating but it forced me to use one email for contacts. If not you will have multiple contacts piping up for months.

Go to your email syc settings and check only the account you want to syc with. This should clear your duplicate contact issue.

If you have miui you can merge contacts with the miui contacts app... if not there are market apps that will do that job.

Ok. So i have a true fix for my problem..
I use ex dialer so just using the option in contacts to not show syncs did not work.
What i did.
1 airplane mode
2 export contacts to sd
3titanium backup wipe data for system contacts
4 menu> sync settings> turn off auto sync
5 reboot recovery
6 wipe all cache
7 reboot
8 open contacts
9 tap menu> display options> google.
10 long hold "all other contacts" and remove sync group
11 menu> sync settings> turn on auto sync
12 toggle off airplane mode if is still on
13 should be success
Seems google mirrored my contacts to 2 different sync groups. This gave me hell. Glad i dug into the problem and hope it helps others.

Why can't you change the default for your contact that you create on the phone to default to a Google contact instead of the phone contact? Does anyone know how this can be changed? I rooted my phone and lost a couple contacts that I had put in the phone because phone contacts don't sync to the gmail account. Glad I at least found this out early so I don't have a huge problem when putting a different rom on it in the future.

that was a really annoying "feature" of the samsung fascinate. I guess the only way around it is to use the AOSP contacts program. I will attempt to restore it from titanium backup and see if it works
it usually sets it as gmail right out of the gate when i'm creating contacts, etc...i find myself checking every once in awhile now anyways. it is truly annoying!

A) language
B) It's a feature of sense, therefore htc, not vzw, is to blame.
however, yes, annoying. One solution would be to export contracts to SD from phone, import from SD to google.
(you would have to keep doing this, but it's a good way to back up before wipe/flash.)

I did the same thing. I went into gmail and organized/updated all my contacts. So now all my phone contacts are Google contacts. Be sure to go into gmail and do a perge/merge of any duplicates. This makes porting contacts over that much easier.
What really annoyed me was the linking/suggested linking of contacts on the phone vs google vs facebook. After you centralize everything around your google contacts things become much easier.
To set contact default to Google go into you contact list then press menu and choose view next uncheck the box that says "phone" and now your default is Google

I think if you create the new contact in your google account (vs on the phone) then it will sync up and everything will be OK.
I have to get into my google account contacts and clean up some stuff, duplicates, etc., that seem to appear every now and then.

Thanks, this is one step closer to what I need. I have a couple GMail accounts on my phone one of which I use solely for work contacts and I use the option of selecting which GMail account I added the new contact to. Really missing this feature
Any word if the AOSP contact app works?

That just changes which contacts show. I am talking about entering a new contact and letting it be a Google contact by default. I don't want to accidentally set it up as a phone contact which will not sync to your Google account.

I gotta say Contact Management with Android has been probably one of my biggest frustrations. I like the ability to sync my GMail contacts, that's easy enough. But between getting pictures and "linking" "synching" and "attaching" contacts via Twitter, MS Exchange, and other means... TO not being able to only populate mobile numbers when creating SMS/MMS's and such, it is just way more difficult than it should be.
It could and SHOULD be much simpler. Maybe I'm just a wii-todd, idk.. Either way, I feel your pain dude.
Ya so was I.... Maybe since u have a mixture it isn't working for u.....Export all your contact to Google then remove ur Google account from the phone then delete all ur contacts off ur phone then sync with Google and do the steps I posted before

Maybe try removing your Google account from accounts and sync and then add it again and sync up.

Oh god, don't use facebook sync, its horrible at this point. Rely on google and all your problems will be solved.
I recently did a factory reset on my phone and ran into this problem after the phone froze and restarted. I knew the contacts were on my SIM card as I moved them there in case my backup failed. If all your contacts are on your SIM, try taking the card out, put it back in, then start up the phone again. I've had to do it twice since my reset. Hope that helps.

I feel stupid for asking this but I can't seem to find how to sync my new contacts with google. All my old contacts have a g next to them in the contacts app stating they're synced. Any new contact I make is just saved on my phone. I've had four Android phones and this is the first one that doesn't ask and let me choose the default save location for new contacts. I'm currently running S8.1 and syncing with google is turned on under setting.

hi, this is a bit off topic, but I can explain:
I would like to keep my contacts (and info related to them) on devices owned by me.
I DO NOT like how I am "pushed" to use google (or any other account) for keeping my contacts on.
I like to have a choice, at the moment I choose off-line storage on my PC and my phone.
Can it be done like in good old days?
You can just put the contacts on your phone under your Google account and just turn off the sync for the contacts. It will still be on a Google account but it will offline. That's the only option I can think of.
Sent from my DROID BIONIC using XDA App
+, you can then delete those contacts from your Google account afterwards if you don't want to store them online after getting them onto the phone.

thank you guys - that seems to be a solution.
Just to make sure I understand correctly:
1. link my phone to my gmail
2. go to settings->accounts->gmail and untick sync contacts, sync email, sync calendar
is this correct?
will it work?
I am factory resetting my phone for a third time already so apologies for asking SO many questions, but I want to make it write this time
Yeah just sign into your account and it will ask you what you want to sync. Just keep anything unchecked for what you don't want to sync.

For some effed up reason while editing an already existing contact android decided to take a rotten fart on me and every single one of my contacts and delete all them...
How can I get them back even the funambol way doesn't seem to wanna work right since this happened. It starts the import then imports then only 3 already existing contacts show up. None of my funambol contacts.
I just wanna take a brick to the face of whoever created the crappiest contact manager ever for android, import them through gmail then ya got to edit the numbers so on and et cetera, all pure horse crap rubbed in the face of every android user.
I've got them all backed up on my HTC HD2 Windows Mobile through Turbo Contact Backup as an xml file, but a lot of good that does me for my Dell Streak Mini if funambol doesn't wanna play nicely with others.
Any help would be great!
Finally got my contacts back, but now when I go to add a new contact, I have a bunch of "(Unknow)" contacts nothing in them or anything and they only show up when adding a new contact.
How can I get rid of these?
Have u ever thought of using a gmail acct to backup ur contact? U can also edit ur contacts thru the gmail and they will sync directly with ur phone.

Using HTC HD2 [Windows Mobile 6.5 Stock, Ubuntu and MccMBoXMaX SD] and Dell Streak (Mini) 5 [LXdroid 2]
is mobile 6.5 what your using?
My setup now is mainly Dell Streak (Mini) 5, I had to download contact remover and select all then unselect my contacts and click delete all selected. I don't use Google Contacts yet, due to past incompatibility issues, my contacts really need a cleaning, now invalid tags and what not from WinMo address book, but I'm to lazy to clean up 300 some odd contacts.
Had 1000 blank (Unknown) contacts that couldn't be seen by most android contacts handlers, if I had tried syncing then I'd have had that in gmail too not just my android phone book... I still say google has a lot of work to do on handling contacts.

Hi You can use Excel to view your contacts stored in XML.
then you can save that file as CSV, most compatible with all devices while restoring the contacts...
try and reply whether worked or Not...
