Heyy All, (sorry if this is in the wrong section!!!!)
I have a couple of questions.. I wanted to partition my SD card so that apps2sd would work. Here are the steps i took:
Did a nandroid backup
I copied all information from SD card to my computer
rebooted phone into recovery
chose partition SD card - Then upgraded ext2 to ext3
copied and pasted all files back onto the SD card
nandroid restored
in recovery I am able to access all files on the SD card but when i reboot my phone an icon comes up in the notification bar that looks like a SD card with an exclamation point with the error "Blank SD card or unsupported file system"
Can anyone tell me how to fix this? or why my files are no longer on the SD card when I reboot my phone?
Thank you all very much!
You must be running a Froyo-based ROM, which with the "normal" way of partitioning through any kind of recovery, Froyo doesn't recognize the FAT32 partition. You're going to have to search the Eris Dev forum for a thread by Conap called something like "Using old Apps2SD with Froyo".
FYI, no offense if you already know this, but did you know that Froyo's built-in Apps2SD doesn't require partitioning at all, although it has different limitations than the "old" style Apps2SD.
here's a link to the thread that roirraW "edor" ehT is referencing:

good luck and let us know if you need any other help!
Awesome thank you very much guys!!.. I actually figured it out thought. I just reformatted the card and got rid of the extension. Put all of my files back on and its as good as new!.. Thanks again
I have a problem with my SD card, not sure if partitioning will do anything for it, perhaps mine is corupted some how.
Running KF37, on Sunday my Eris froze up, any apps I had on my SD where unable to open or recognized. My phone was very slow and would not respond very well. I took my SD card out and plugged it into my computer and it would not open (I can't remember the error message) said something like "no contents" . After about an hour I was able to open my SD card and everything was there, so I backed it up. I placed it back in my phone and I still could not get my apps to work, those that are Apps2SD.
Due to the phone freezing up and the battery being extremely hot I had it replaced.
The new Eris, I flashed the latest Nonsensikal, it restored all my apps, but would not allow me to move them to SD. When I went under "manage apps" to list all my apps it showed "computing" instead of their file size. It would fail to move to SD every time. Then I would get a FC of the launcher and only have a black screen with no acess, I could at least see my notification bar and pull that down but that was all I could do on the phone...a reflash of Nonsensikal had no effect to fix this.
So, last night I install KF38, no FC's but I still can't move apps to SD, they fail each time.
I delete everything off my card, reformate it but it doesn't help.
I partitioned it (for the first time...not sure if I didn't it right but I beleive I followed the instructions) and I still can not get Apps2SD.
Any thoughts?

First, most of the time with Froyo ROMs you don't want to partition the SD card. If you do there's a special way to get it to work with Froyo, but the only reason you would want to partition it is for advanced reasons and nothing having to do with getting Froyo-native Apps2SD working.
Have you gone into Menu/Settings/CyanogenMod settings/Application settings and checked "Allow application moving"?

Yes, this is not the issue, though I wish it were. I have been running the Froyo rom's for a very long time.
As I tried to explain, life was going great for me and my Eris until Sunday when the little guy froze up and became very laggy. At that point my apps that were on my SD card no longer worked, and when I removed my SD card and plugged it into my computer it would not open for about an hour or so, I got an error message, something like "no content" or something like that.
I did not do anything to my SD card (other than copied the contents to my computer) when I plugged it into my new Eris. I still could not move apps to the SD.
Which at that point I thought that perhaps something happened to it and that I might need to partition it, which I did through recovery, but still no luck.
I am trying to do it via the thread link from this thread via gscripts and connecting it to my pc, but I can't seem to figure it out correctly.
I am not sure why apps wont work or move to the SD. I don't think it is corrupt or damaged because I can access everything on the card, save on it, play music from it, pictures, ect.
I don't want to use a different SD, I bought this 16GB Class 6 only for my phone and I use about 11GB so far.
Eagerly Waiting....
Thanks again.

Okay, since you said you weren't sure if you partitioned it right, did you choose "0" for the Ext2 and also for the Swap size? That's how you should normally do for use with a Froyo ROM.
I wish I had a Class 6 16GB to play with.
The only GScripts I can think of related to partitions are for if you partition your SD card some other way other than recovery, which is what would be necessary in order to arrange and access the partitions in a way that Froyo can deal with.
After repartitioning your SD card, can you use a Micro SD to USB adapter (not through the phone) to access the contents okay?
If you can but still can't on the phone, then your phone probably is damaged and needs replaced.
I am pretty sure it is the phone, and not my SD card. I tried 3 other SD's and none of them allowed me Apps2SD.
I did get it partitioned finally But that did not help my problem
I am going to try and reflash a ROM and see if that helps, I doubt it at this point.
I am able to flash in recovery but for some reason I can not install apps via Astro that are stored on the SD. I can access content on card but no app access...bizarre
I just unrooted and flashed flashback 2.1 (no sense to continue to root when this phone is going back in a couple days).
As for a replacement, it will be here Monday. Believe it or not, this new replacement, which was a brand new Eris in the box, I activated Wednesday night overheats as well Yesterday I picked it up off my desk and the back was very hot (just like it's predecessor on Sunday) and the awake time was more than 100%. So Asurion is sending yet again another Eris, this will be my 6 Eris. So I will see how this replacement goes.
As for the Eris, I called Verizon about Asurion who did offer me 2 alternatives to the Eris, the LG Vortex and the Moto Devour (not comparable IMO), the tech rep at Verizon I spoke with agree with me that both alternatives are not comparable and that I should have been given the option for the Incredible since it is the next version after the Eris in my same manufacture line. So I called Asurion back who then asked me to call Monday when my Eris arrives so they can verify with a higher supervisor to ship me out the Incredible. If I do end up with the Incredible I hope there are some good ROMS for it.

I'm sorry to hear about your rotten luck and that we weren't able to solve it. We'll be sorry to lose another Eris user but I hope they get you the Incredible. I haven't looked but I'm sure the Incredible has some comparable ROMs available for it. It certainly doesn't hurt that it's more powerful.
Good luck!
Let me start out by saying that I have searched for any threads that have covered this, and have come up empty.
This has happened twice to me in the last two months. Running task650's V.9, which is an awesome ROM. I've got a Lexar Class 10 32gb card. Twice in two months have I booted up and the media scanner would show a broken sd card notice. I tried booting the phone without the card, and then re-installed the card. Same notice of bad sd card on boot.
At this point I took the card and stuck it in a laptop, which generated a "can not open due to corrupt or unreadable file" and "reformat drive" or something like that. I was forced to format, losing photos, vids, and TiBu folder. I synced to Dropbox and got the backup folder re-installed.
Any ideas about what could have corrupted the card? I suppose the card could be damaged. I paid good bucks, as it is not a low end card. Replace the card? Any guidance would be appreciated.
I have a Lexar Class 10 32GB card. Same issue, after first time reformatted and same thing happened a week or two later.
I did an RMA with Lexar, think there is a 1 year warranty. Got a new card, been working fine the past several months.
Ok. Thanks for the input. I've got a Kingston Class 10 on the way.
I was hoping it wasn't in the phone hardware.
Thanks, I just reminded myself to do a backup of that card itself to my PC.
Sorry to hear about your problem though.

Yeah, I lost some New Years day photos and vids with my wife. I'll NEVER find her in that good of a mood again!
It makes me wonder about my decision to place my TiBu folder on the external card, along with Nandroid backups. True, it syncs to Drop Box for TiBu but do I need the extra headache of wondering if my card is going to get smoked again? I suppose I should be backing it all up to pc..
I'm not sure but it seems to be a problem with the phone and class 10 cards.
My first one was a 16gb class 10 micro sd that one day just decided to stop working (lasted a month or so). Couldn't access it via the phone or PC.
So I went out and got a 32gb class 10 and after a month or so again it stopped working
Knowing this I refused to buy a class 10 card again. I went to Walmart and got the cheapest 32gb micro sd (Sandisk class 4) and so far so good. no problems at all
Lost everything I had too on the first 2 cards so learned the hard way to do backups to my PC.
Not the class, it's probably the brand. Some brands have terrible quality control, especially if you go for a cheaper one. I have one from Amazon Basic and it works just fine. My brother uses one from SanDisk with zero problem.
Class 10 is also newer. The technology to manufacture these is not that old. I suspect some manufacturers still need to refine their process.

Got a similar problem here.
Transcend Class 10 32GB Card
Works in PC, HTC Desire - no probs.
Put in Galaxy S2, it starts Media Scanning, a few seconds later reports SD Card Damaged, requires formatting.
It's right - take it back out (again, umpteenth time!), put it in PC or HTC - card is "damaged". (Nothing permanent, can reformat.)
Samsung support claim to not know anything - mind you they "play dumb" about the camera "pink spot" issue, until you challenge them to get real...
Oh, dear!

Buy a 500gb external hard drive for like 50 bucks they're cheap now. Backup everything to it once a week. Never lose data. Profit.

Sounds like a brand issue, but have you ever tried checking the drive for errors?
Given that even your PC gives you a "damaged" message, it may not work. Once inserted, go to "My Computer," get to properties, and check for errors (enable the "automatically fix file system errors" option). In the past, this has corrected "corrupted" SD cards for me.

The only corruptions I have experienced on this phone were when using MTP to transfer files from the PC. Since I stopped using MTP and use only USB Storage mounting, I have not had any more problems.
I've actually experienced this twice. Both times flashing to AOKP. I'm not blaming AOKP but just saying. The first time even my PC wouldn't read it and it needed to be reformatted. The second time my pc could read it and after nandroiding back to shostock2 it was fine.

Hello everyone, I seem to keep having an issue with my desktop (no sure if that is the right word to describe the main pages where you icons and widgets are) icons will change to images of the android guy. It seems to happen randomly and frequently when I reboot my phone. It never happened on stock but I am currently running Team Perfection's Objection #2 with its RC1. I have flashed it twice and still have the same problem. Both times I flashed, I did a clean install. I flashed the dalviek cache, wiped the partition, fixed permissions...... This issue has also come when I tried Goldie 5 rom also. So far to remedy the problem, I delete all the icons and then I add the shortcuts back. Not a deal breaker, just annoying and I am curious as to why. I have tried searching on the web and in the forums here but having no luck. I think it may be the way I'm typing in the search. Any help or suggestions will be much appreciated. I have included a screenshot of my issue.
p.s. this is my first question post so please tell me if I need and how to improve my posting skills.
Go into settings/applications, and move the apps from sdcard to phone.

They will show like this when the OS has lost connection with your sd card. You can.go thru setting unmount and then remount your sd card and they should show up. Not to be a doomsayer, but there is a possibility that your sd card is getting ready to go out on you. Mine exhibited the same thing and then died 2 weeks later.

Please dont say that! This has been happening to me too, and I figured it was because the apps were on the SD card....so if the card dies, I will loose everything wont i?
Unmounting the SD card and remounting didn't work but moving the apps back to the phone worked. I may invest in a new sd card with a higher class. I am currently using a san disk 4 class. I want to keep my apps on the sd card because the partition seem so small on the phone and I find it easier for backing up purposes.

Not saying it is absolutely going to happen, but that is what happened to me. New card, no crazy icons.
Would at least back up everything important from the sd card.

I mean its possible. I learned from loosing over 500 pictures and videos how important it is to back up SD cards. There are many apps that can back it up for you. I personally use Google+ for backing up pictures and videos only when connected to a charger.
When my SD crapped out, it put my phone into a boot loop, which made me panic since I was an avid flasher on my atrix. Not sure every SD card acts that way. Of course, once removed, phone booted up normally

This phone has almost 2GB of storage memory for apps. And that is about the most I have seen for about any phone. So if you are using it up you must have alot of apps. Maybe too many as the phone is having issues keeping them alll in memory. Had similiar issues to this on previous phones when they were simply over loaded.
Also, I don't believe it is your SD card going bad. The phone doesn't save/move apps to your external (physical) sd card. It saves them to the built in internal/usb memory which is about 11GB. Even the EA/Gameloft extra downloads are saved on the internal/usb memory. You can connect your phone to your computer and see this. However when you unmout the external sd card the apps disappear. So how the 2 are linked is unknown to me. But that link may be the issue.
Got a 32 gb card just to be safe. I need a larger card anyway so I'll throw this older one on my camera. LOL
Thanks for saving me time

Thanks for the simple but effective tip. Don't know why I spend hours reading the non-geek forums, xda is the only one that has real, expert answers. Rather than "well if u press vol sideways and spin around three times while chanting gnusmas " or something like that.
Alright guys, I noticed today that my Titanium Backups aren't on my mount/extsd storage, and I tried to change the backup location under preferences, but it wouldn't allow me. While checking my sd card I noticed the only file stored on it is my pictures? I tried downloading apps to sd in an attempt to move titanium backup, and that's when I realized I have a serious issue I believe. I was given a message when apps to sd opened that said, "this device does not have a real primary external storage, or the primary external storage is emulated"? Whatever the hell that means by emulated I don't know? The sd card was working in the last phone I used it in.
Biggest problem is that I'm rooted, so I can't return it under warranty! At least I can't to my knowledge. I'm in serious need of some help here, I purchased the phone at the T mobile retail store, so I don't know if I can sneak it past them somehow, or if I should maybe just (it hurts to say it) brick it on purpose, and pull the old" it just shut off and wouldn't turn back on" routine?
Please guys, any and all advice will be much appreciated!
Before doing anything drastic, have you thought about maybe reformatting the SD card first? If that doesn't work then try another SD card (they do go bad you know). It sounds like something that should be easy to fix. Whatever you do please don't brick it on purpose. It's not anyone's fault that your device is now acting up after rooting it. At least do them a solid and ODIN back to stock, then try to return it if that's the case.
Hi,
You should read this thread. It should shed some light on your external SD card problem and provide a couple of methods to get around it.

Yes I did format it to no avail, and I'm headed home soon where I'll try a different sd card. I don't want to brick the device, and I've had to unroot and return a phone before because of a hardware issue with the screen that wasn't my fault. The problem with doing that in this situation is that I don't believe there's a way to unroot it and go back to the stock recovery or reset the binary flash counter. As far as you saying it's not anyone's fault, it sure is my friend and it's not mine! I had a Galaxy s4g that wouldn't read an sd card two days after I got it & I had to return it. So, as far as being no one's fault, not true... It would be Samsungs fault, and rooting it had nothing to do with it. If I broke a device because of my own foolishness or stupidity, I would ABSOLUTELY NEVER try to exchange it! The entire basis of my spirituality is based on karma and I would suck it up & pay for my mistake but maintain my peace of mind. This however, I am not at fault for, and I shouldn't be responsible for faulty hardware just because I obtained root access.

Okay I've read the links and this is very odd??? I need to hear from someone with the gs3 that they've also discover that they're phone recognizes & reads the sd card, but will not allow apps to write to it. PLEASE, someone check this and help me out here!
I REALLY NEED TO FIGURE OUT IF ALL Gs3's DO THIS, OR IF I NEED TO FIGURE OUT HOW TO RETURN TO STOCK & EXCHANGE IT?
Sorry for the frustration, but I just spent a heck of a lot of money here, and this is a very aggravating problem....
My TB backs up to the ext SD. I had the same problem you did. Too bad I can't actually remember what I did. :crying:
When you go into TB and try to select storage location...nothing comes up but the internal?
I think I manually moved the TB folder from the internal to the external...then went back into TB to select the location...then selected the Detect button...and it came up with a list of folders that I could choose.
It went something like that. Hope that sheds some light...(sorry I cant remember exactly)
FYI...the ext SD folder is under mnt/extSD...or something like that.
I forget to mention something else guys. I am able to copy & paste my Titanium Backups as well as any other files to the sd card. So, the phone recognizes it, and it will write to external sd if I manually copy things there, but it will not allow any third party apps to write to external sd? I also cannot move apps to the sd card? This is a HUGE pain in the ass! I bought the 16gb model because that's all the retailer I my area had, so the sd card is a necessity for me. If I'm downloading torrents or other large files this could be a problem. I'm really wondering if this isn't just my phone?
It'd be great if someone here with the skills could port this mod for us.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1433436
It basically makes the phone think that the external is the internal...and all files downloaded from the browsers or whatever app that doesn't allow sd access...to go directly to external.

Sorry nothing! THANK YOU! I was like 3/4 of the way to that idea, I had already copied the file, but I was just thinking maybe if I deleted the internal file, maybe now it will follow the one I copied to the mount/extsdstorage? I can't thank you enough for just confirming that this isn't a problem specific to my model. I think that this problem should be explained to everyone & stickied. This is a seriously confusing situation. Ppl who don't root or come to XDA won't have any idea why they're music, videos, or anything from third party apps aren't going to their sd cards? Some ppl may not even realize it? I don't know if it's been mentioned in another thread here yet, but I couldn't find anything in our forums about it, and I've been trying to figure out what was going on all day. I still don't understand what the hell it meant about emulated storage?

It basically makes the phone think that the external is the internal...and all files downloaded from the browsers or whatever app that doesn't allow sd access...to go directly to external.

Is this already a widely recognized problem and I'm just late to the freaking party or what? Because I do follow threads, search the forums, and read, and I've never heard of this before... I hope they have this error fixed in roms.
I REALLY NEED TO FIGURE OUT IF ALL Gs3's DO THIS,

All stock Samsung Galaxies S3 do this. Google in their infinite wisdom is locking down apps so they can not write to an external card that can infect other devices.
Problem is we all want more control with our external cards and there are a lot of unhappy campers with this new "feature". Gamers are especially concerned because they can not install their games to the external card to free up more space.
This is a real strong reason to buy the 32gb model and not the 16gb. One could take the stance that they are forcing us to pay a higher premium for our storage when we purchase the phone.
As I said you can do the work around with directory bind until:
1. A dev comes up with a a patch
2. You install a custom Rom like Cm9 that has patched out this security policy.
Never mind... Now that I'm using better keywords to describe the problem, and searching outside of just the US variants forum, I'm finding threads... I feel like an idiot now! Some folks are talking as if this is better? I don't see it though. I did a nandroid after root, and it only left me with around 8gb or so with my apps installed. I know its faster memory than an sd card, but it's kind of a pain. I hope I never need to download anything bigger than 8gb... Doubtful ill need my phone for anything that big though.
Sorry for freaking out and making a big deal out of this issue, but I thought my device was defective, and I wasn't using good search terms. I should have been able to figure this out without cluttering things with a two Page thread.

Yes, I really wish I could take it back and pay the difference for the 32gb, but with being rooted its really not feasible. I was browsing XDA on my phone also, and I didn't even catch the link in your first post, I was only reading the links I your second post, lol. I really feel like a dummy here since my question was almost immediately answered. Also, the browser can act a little wonky sometimes on XDA. As soon as I made it home to my desktop, I was looking over the thread & knocking my forehead against the screen!
Yeah...but if someone could modify that script for our phones...(I personally use it on my Transformer...and til this day...has been perfect.)

Actually you are bringing up a valid concern and one of the first to do it in this section of the US version of the S3, my hat off to you!
It would be good idea to have a stickied thread in general that addresses this. That way ppl will be well aware of how to work around it. And yes, a patch for this would be great, because some may prefer things this way, and alot will prefer the previous standards. I for one don't like this one bit!
Put a stock rom on it and go into the store. Tell them you're having issues, they can order one on their end and send it out to you.
I would know. I worked there.
Hey all, I tried looking this up already but I couldn't find what I wanted. I've nearly used up all of my phone's 9 or so gigabytes, and now I'd like to know the best way to get more room. I've deleted a decent amount of bloatware, but my misc. files still hovers at about 6.4. I've also thought of getting an sd card, but I looked it up and it seems like many people have problems with those on this phone. I'm not really sure what the best way to go about this is, so I'd appreciate any help.
Flash the Google edition ROM. Or you can get a micro SD card. Maybe use Google drive?
If you're in your return window, return it and get the 32GB version.

Buying an external SD card is definitely the answer.
I bought a 64GB SD from Sandisk, I was having problems just like everyone else. The card would unexpectedly unmount every few minutes, so I couldn't listen to music without being interrupted. However, Sandisk is fully aware of the problems its cards are having with Samsung phones. I contacted them, they sent me a new card with an "updated firmware". I have had the card for nearly a month now, and haven't had any issues with it. They have solved the problem.
So if you buy a card that has come right out of the factory, you, too, should have zero issues. If you buy one that is a little old, you can contact them and they'll send you a new one that WILL work.
You have very few options without a SD card. 9 GB of storage is far too little, and cloud storage is just messy. You shouldn't have to rely on mobile networks to have access to your data.
Hit thanks if I helped you, and good luck if you decide to buy an SD card.
I wish I would've waited until they released the 32 gb version, but I'm well past the return date. I've deleted most bloatware I don't want, but I still would like to keep some of it, so I can't flash the google edition rom. I'd rather just delete it myself, but I'm using root explorer and I heard that causes problems. I'll probably just get an sd card and update my phone. I don't know how seeing as I've rooted it, but I can worry about that later!
I still don't get how there can be so much bloatware. I know there's the OS, but that can't be more than 4. Most of the bloat apps aren't even that big. Anyways, thanks for the help.

Your misc files should not change if you delete bloat. If it did decrease in size, that would be a major cause for concern, as those don't represent the bloat you deleted. Debloating really isn't going to gain you any usable space because the apps that you are deleting reside on the system partition. Bloated or not, that partition is going to remain the exact same size regardless. Deleting apps from it does not make that space available to user apps or storage- it remains available only to /system.

No, you won't have to update your phone. Your phone wasn't causing the problem. When I said they "updated the firmware" I was talking about the SD card. If you get a Sandisk card straight out of the factory now, it should work with your S4 regardless of your root status or your custom rom.
So to be perfectly clear, Samsung didn't update its firmware, Sandisk did.
If your SD card doesn't work, simply contact Sandisk and they'll send you one that works. Simple as that. You WILL NOT have to change ANYTHING with your phone.

I was under the impression that doing that does free up space. An sd card really is my salvation here.

I know little about how moving apps to sd cards works, but I was saying that because I rooted before the new update so I'll need to update to move apps unless apps2sd works.
najaboy, I have a question because you seem to be knowledgeable about this. How is it that just system memory takes up 6.38 GB? Is it because of Samsung exclusive features like touchwiz and all those airgimmicks?

AH! Ok I see what your saying. I don't think it is necessary to lose root to move apps to your SD, though. I've seen a lot of positive comments about Foldermount. Foldermount should free up space in your internal storage no problem. Check it out.
I'm also pretty confident that soon the rom devs will incorporate the update that Verizon put out into their own roms.
And about your question to najaboy, the 6.38 GB is everything that makes your phone's software. Yes, air gestures, smart stay, all of that. I do find it a little misleading Samsung advertises a 16GB phone, but I like keeping my data on a card anyway.
