So being that I am soon to be a first time tablet owner, what features does ICS have over gingerbread? Is it that we won't be able to run future apps? Or is it just a new OS with new features such as cut/paste and contacts, etc?
I do realize the bootloader is locked, therefore we cannot get ICS unless it is unlocked, but it would be nice to know what we may be missing out on if the bootloader didn't get unlocked.
I just want to make sure the nook tablet won't be a paperweight in 6 months as far as no new apps being available.
Thanks.

I did google it prior to your not so helpful link, and I found features of ICS. However, the real question I was trying to get answered is will apps going forward still be compatible with the older gingerbread (2.3) OS?
From the searching I did on my own, different sites say different things. The people using this forum are more knowledgable than I about android, so I was hoping for a quick answer.
I probably could have explained that better in my OP.
Thanks.

Considering the level of fragmentation of Android, it would be a very silly move if Google was to remove legacy support. So in short, yes, they will work.
ICS devices haven't even been made available yet, and even once they do, only a small percentage of the total number of Android users will get them. Most people are locked into a contract for some period of time, so it'll probably be at least a year before ICS becomes really common. Look at Gingerbread, it was released almost a year ago and a fair number of phones still don't have it, but there's no reason most apps won't work. Honeycomb was different, but that's a special case.
Errr...yes they are? They're not available in the US from carrier's, but they've already launched in the UK, and if you're willing to pay, you can get the GSM version (compatible with ATT and Tmobile, voice and 3G/HSPA+) for...just shy of $800.
Okay, limited availability then, either way it doesn't change my point that ICS will not be the most common Android version for quite a while yet. I bet lower end phones ship with Gingerbread or even Froyo for another year.

Tablet apps will likely not be compatible with gingerbread (eg current tablet apps are only compatible with honeycomb and newer versions of android).
If you plan on using your device as a tablet, you should NOT get the Nook Tablet.
If you are fine with an ereader (that can do some extra stuff), the tablet is ok.

That's the whole thing... what kind of ROM would you be able to run?
No Dev here is gonna take the time to port a 2.1 ROM over. But interesting nonetheless.
I don't think it is real. At least the OS isn't Android. Take a look at the screenshots. You can clearly see that it isn't the stock 1.6 Android, but more likely a chinese copy of it. It is a very good copy indeed, but mostly the top bar, the bottom page indicators on the homescreen what makes me think it is a fake.
Those indicators are not native to 1.6. I agree that it is probably a fake. However I didn't bother to read the 66 reviews on it.

guys, I have one of these, they are real and if you google slatedroid, you'll find there's a fair bit of stuff being done with them.
for me, i use mine as a cheap-as ebook reader, at less than a third of the cost of a kindle or such, it works for me.
Just wondering if the OTA servers are back and if a new update is available?
They have been down several days. You can be patient and wait, or you can go over
to one of the threads in Developers and download the file version -- say 3588.
Usually you have to win-rar the download to get the update.zip and recovery folder.
Hook up your PC to you G-Tablet and copy both files to the /sdcard directory.
The shut down and boot into recovery using power/volume + and that you cause the update to load.
Hope this helps.

I am content with VegaN for now..
Sorry, but I don't frankly think we see honey-anything for a long while

moving that fast either.
IN THE END, I think whether you are really happy with something -- as in

Its not google that is holding up things. Its the tablet manufacturers. We could have honeycomb if viewsonic released source code for the drivers we need. What viewsonic should be doing is using the developers here to improve there products!

I'm not an expert or anything, but if the Xoom and the G-tab are as close in hardware as I've read, couldn't someone extract the drivers from a Xoom and use them in a G-tab? I hope I'm asking this correctly. I'm not sure how the dirvers are implimented in Android since I come from a PC background.

They aren't the same, that's the problem. Completely different system boards - the only thing the "same" that we know of is the CPU, and I believe the Wifi. The only issue is that the frame buffer seems to have moved to either the kernel or the bootloader, so even though we can boot up Honeycomb on the GTAB, no one's been able to activate the LCD (yet).
What we really need, from my "hacker" perspective, is another Harmony device like the Adam or VEGA to get Honeycomb. That's something we can use on the GTAB, since the boards are similar. Or, at the very least, for Nvidia to release a Honeycomb dev kit for the Harmony board. But so far none of these things have happened yet.
Imo, don't go on Honeycomb as your reason to own / keep a GTAB. I'd be more concerned about optimizing Froyo at this point. Google (and Nvidia) have really locked down Honeycomb so far, so who knows when a Harmony-based version will show up.

Thanks for the explaination. I'm very new to the Android world so I'm still struggling to get a "windows" reference to everything. I've tried a few of the gingerbread roms and really don't see much diference than the stock one. Apps appear to work the same and other than a speed increase, it was the same "experience" if you know what I mean. I just wish there were apps that took full use of the tablet experience.

I had the same learning curve - Android is more like Windows CE than Windows, imo. As for Gingerbread, it's not a major update but it is a bit more polished and there are speed improvements - think of it as a "service pack", almost.

I think you will be fine rooting that way. There is a site that reviewed th tfp and they used that root method and they said it went well with no issues.
What the hurry ?
It might not be a bad idea to wait until the unit is burned in, and you are satisfied that everything is working perfectly before mucking around (i.e. rooting). Then, if you have problems, you can more certain that the problems are attributable to the rooting.
Enjoy your Prime
Could anyone brief me with the cons of rooting the device? :|
Research first, especially with this being your first android tab. Don't be over anxious n go bricking your device..lol.
Was there an immediate notification for an update after you opened it? Razor claw supposedly doesn't work after Asus pushed a system update. It was rooted prior to update on in-store demo model.
What's reason for eagerness to root so quickly? There are no custom roms or anything out yet. It's not 3G so no tethering. If you root and uninstall system files/bloatware you won't be able to do OTA update to Icer Cream Sandwich. Which means you will have to wait till someone here makes a version, which might not for a while.
Sorry that this is off topic, but does the color you ordered seem true to the advertised pics?

Good thing we have search engines....
1. Technically voids warranty and may not allow OTA updates.
2. Possibility of a brick if you don't know WTF you're doing.
Huummmm... cons of rooting..... hummm... don't rush, still thinking.... possible OTA update issue, very unlikely, but still possible I guess; most of the time the OTA will just erase the root.... uummmm yeah, that's about all I can think of.
Also, guess there's a very small chance of a soft brick... but I would tend to think that the root will either take, or it wont... but there's still a chance I guess.
IMO, the benefits far outweigh the "possible" consequences.
Wish I had mine, I do it in a heart beat.

Yeah, no other reason... except de-odexing, themeing, TI Backup, freezing, editing database files, changing VM Heap size, installing custom scripts, overclocking/undervolting custom kernels, disabling startup processes.... that's just off the top of my head.

No Official date yet but could be by end of this month or mid Jan. It literally could be anyday. Just keep a lookout on an update notification popping up. Or even go to settings and about. Then click on system or whatever to see of it searches and finds an update for your device.

Everybody says root root. The new roms come out fast... I did it with my original tf and roms don't come out that fast especially if Asus is going to push ICS soon. I'd wait a while especially since a lot of potential devs won't get their unit for several weeks or months!
OK so I know we already have seen a test release I just got a email from Motorola at 12 am offering me a new soak test of a finalized release..... they say this not a beta its what the final release will be.... currently I'm unlocked and running numerous roms at a time..... so what I'm wondering is if this is the same test already seen or something new.... anyone else still receiving or received one last night? When they release the ICS update they will more than likely implement the same unlock kill method as found in the 3.5. And who wants a blurred ics with no ability to install custom roms? We need the release solely for the kernel and drivers. So even if it was ics, no one should update who plans on keeping the ability to flash customs. Then again, I'm sure it won't be long before a dev finds a way around this permalocking bull****.

Me - I'd be quite happy with that.
Although, I do vehemently object to Moto's locking on philosophical grounds. I'm still a hacker, but personally don't find much incremental value in customizing ICS. (Have stock ICS on my Xoom) I satisfy my hacking needs on the hardware side nowadays (not phones, other embedded things)

I didnt mean to exclude anyone. I know having 4g is important for some and keeps people locked. Others just don't know or don't care. But i feel comfortable in stating that 'most' people found in these forums arn't here to stay on stock, but to expand their phones capabilities to the edge of what is possible. I for one don't understand how anyone can see all the amazing work being done around here and not want to get involved. Being locked down would drive me insane. But eh, different strokes for different folks i suppose.
"Involvement" for 'most' people here involves nothing more than whining and demanding things 'the way I want it because everybody wants it that way.'
Personally, I value root access over everything else. That's what makes me happy. I have minor tweaks on my stock ROM that apparently have enough boost to where I don't see an improvement by flashing something else. I have yet to find a hacked-up 'upgrade' which runs as good or better.
The only thing I've gained so far from flashing different ROMs is too much visual candy which I can't stand and a handful of software that I somewhat rely on which either currently doesn't support anything above 2.3.5 or affects my daily use in a negative way.
But yeah, I'm with you. Do what makes you happy. And if it matters, I probably won't do the Motorola update that this thread was intended to talk about.

Hey, friend, no offense taken. You are very correct - most people here want custom ROMs. I enjoy watching and listening here, and fully understand and respect those who want custom ROMs.
Frankly, I probably burnt out in the WinMo days; I never just "had a phone". I now just like having a phone, and spending my hacking time elsewhere.
Cheers!
Maybe ICS Rollout to Test Users ?
I am keeping my fingers crossed for an ICS test rollout. According to Motorola ICS schedule, the ICS will supposedly rollout in Q3 for MoPho, which isn't too far.
It would be a shame if Moto sent this survey signup for another Gingerbread update. :-(
I recieved an email from them yesterday morning. The link brings me to a page saying the test is now for a Final Release. This is gonna be a GB 2.3.5 release for now. ICS in Q3 could mean as late as Sept 30, if Moto is on time with it.
For me, I'm not changing a thing. 4G is not available where I live and probably won't be for a while, if at all. So I value the ability to root and unlock more. After tryin different ROMs I'm liking blur less and the cleaness of AOSP more.
Right now the only thing I miss about blur is to have a separate notificatiin for VM instead of it being lumped with my SMS notifications, but I'm about to figure out what I want for that, too. After all, "There's an app for that".

My MoPho's in the kitchen sink!!
I have a Nook Tablet 8gig that I rooted about 10 months ago with no problems. I have had no complaints so I have not mucked around with it, but now I am wondering about updating a bit. The issue is that I want to be able to use an external keryboard dock with my NT, and I read that it was only possible with CM7 (not sure if that means CM7 and above). I rooted the NT using the great instructions and files recommended in the developers thread, but to be honest I have no idea what my nook is rooted with- it works well so I have not messed with it.
I am essentially looking for instructions on how to re-root my NT after I re-set it to factory, or how to alter my current root to run CM7. My screen is half wonked, and I may take it back since I got the extended warrenty, especially if I have to re-root it for this anyway.
Also...what is CM7? Is that an Android version?
As a side note: Can anyone confirm that you can use an external keyboard with CM7 or above?
What do you want to do first?...do you want to return to stock so that you can return your nt...or do you want to flash cm7? (cm7 is a ROM by the way a version of Android os)

Ultimately what I want to do is run an external keyboard, and the information I have is that they will run on CM7. I will probably (assuming my warranty will cover this) be getting this one fixed to replaced soon, so I will need to re-root when I get it back, but for now I don't see the need to re-root if I don't have to.

If your nook is broken already, why bother doing anything to it? Just get it fixed then address the things you want to address. And while you are waiting for the replacement see the next line.
After reading above quote along with your original post you honestly need to read...A LOT. You need to learn at least the basic lingo before you even make an attempt to do anything. Failure to have even an iota of understanding will only lead to failure, complaints, and frustration. Spend a few hours going through the posts on here. There are several new user guides. Read them. Re-Read them. Read them again. Learn to understand what people are talking about when someone says something like "Flash x, y, or z".
As for the keyboard question, I am fairly certain that it doesn't work on ANY rom. They are working on getting the OTG portion of the kernel ironed out. While it is called a tablet it is a glorified E-Reader. The devs have done an awesome job making the Nooks into what they are today (for those of us that have modified them),

I have read several places where cm7 has allowed keyboard use for users. They are not expensive, and I would really like to try.

You will love it more when it works completely and isn't "wonky". You will survive without it for a little bit. Trust me you won't die. Also because CM7 allows for a keyboard doesn't mean every device running CM7 will. Search the forums for more information. I know that some of the developers have been working on it for CM10 but I don't recall seeing any posts saying that they have it working definitively.
As for specific sites or tutorials. Just visit the various android boards and look for the Noob guides. Search google for more details on subjects you want to know about.

Thank, I just took it back to Best Buy and they replaced it with an HD. I thought about an HD+, but I use my nook for reading more than anything (lots of comics, some novels), and the 9" is much less comfortable for that. Now I need to root this bad boy, and I don't have to monkey around with roms other than rooting because the HD already has support for an external keyboard.
This can be closed, as far as I am concerned. Thanks.
