So there is something that I'm trying to figure out.
I am currently running Virus' Infected Eternity 1.5 r31 and using RCMIX 3D v11 kernel. Regardless whether it is overclocked (which I usually run 1.51 ghz) or standard and regardless of whether running a govenor like lagfree or a SetCPU one like performance, when I open the app SystemPanel Monitor it shows only one core running. According to Freeza's thread, his kernel has "dual cores active" and it shows SystemPanel Monitor with two cores running. I switched to Freeza's kernel with Eternity ROM and and checked again and it only shows one core running.
So what I'm trying to figure out is, is this ROM related or am I really only running one core and the other is not used, or otherwise how do I know if both cores are running?
My phone with Eternity ROM is smooth and runs games and videos well with no choppiness so I think it is ok. I just want to know how we can know that both cores are running.
I would also like an answer to this question..
Its because of SetCPU if you remove it and install say CPU Master your second core will be activated.
I thought the latest SetCPU was setup for dual cores?

Download stability test...run the first, classic test...hit the home button..not the back button...open your system app and it will show you that both cores work, when needed, on the rom you think is only using one core.

What version of SetCPU are you using? I use system panel it will show you both core running at the same time.

This Worked!! Thanks cruecu. Seems as though if the demand is not there the second core is idle for these particular govenors.
So this begs the questions.....Which is better (for speed and/or battery life), running mostly one core at full speed and then the second when only necessary, or running both simultaneously at half speed? I've seen some discussion on this but it's not real clear.

I'm not sure one has been proven more effective. I personally don't want both cores running all the time...I don't notice a speed increase since clock speed is still the same. Not sure it matters either way, but I will only run a rom that uses second core only when needed

For the most part I agree with this statement. The reality is the device feels faster and will benchmark better. The better benchmarking is what sold a lot of people. The question still remains is if the device finishes processing the data in half the time is it using more battery? I personally have not noticed a drain on the battery and it may even be a little better. If you let the device decide when to use the second core it may never use it.
Also on some ROMs like my Fresh ROM you can just delete the dual core script in the init.d folder and it will return to single core mode.
Ok, I have side questions that pertains to this topic.
If we can enable the second core in init.d when the phone boots, AND it actually does useful work then HTC would have had to have put effort into supporting that in their kernel because ASOP Gingerbread does not naively support dual core, right? So that makes me wonder why HTC shipped the 3D with dual core inactive! Unless I'm flat out wrong somewhere HTC must have had a reason, and the only things I can think of are race conditions and battery life.

Our CPU was not designed to run this way (asynchronous CPU). That is why it is not active all the time. Now Nvidia Tegra processors (synchronous CPU) are designed to run dual core all the time. That also seem to produce better benchmarks.
HTC kernel is designed to run the way the processor was designed. HTC would not override the CPU specs like we would just to make the benchmark better. The theory is that asynchronous CPU would have better battery life. Reality is most XDA members only care about benchmarks so they can show their friends.

While I agree with you in principle, I do have both cores active at all times. I have not noticed any difference in battery life. Yet I have noticed a difference of quite a bit less lag while loading applications and flipping through screens than when CPU1 is idle.
Does it really matter in the long run daily use? Not really. It's a fun tweak and I learned something new by utilizing it.
I did not get a truly noticeable difference in benchmark though.

Hmmm... A very valid question indeed. Perhaps this "mod" would be used by those who may prefer MORE POWER over better battery life?...
Id LOVE to see this phones FULL potential and perhaps this could be controlled by a toggle or an app to turn it on and off on demand thus giving you the best of both worlds?
I would like to know it this is possible too
i was under the impression that the galaxy splits every task evenly between the two cores to eliminate lag and increase efficiency, as it's faster to run a small task on 2 cores than a big task on one and leave the other one not doing anything

I'm pretty sure Qualcomm uses asynchronous on their S3 models, while Sammy has both active at the same time. So in benchmarks the galaxy will always win, since both cores handle the task.

The work load is split between the two cores. Look it up on phone arena. Each core its always at work,.splitting they load, more power, and more battery saved.

WOW full dual core usage??? for what?? i dont think there are applications to use it fully.
may be good for the sake of benchmarks.
This has nothing to do with benchmarks or apps that fully utilize two cores, there's more than one process that always runs in the background, having two cores always on should make everything run smoother by splitting the workload between two cores.
This patch might not make much difference on a samsung rom, those run pretty smooth to begin with, but try running miui for a change, its not as fluid as a samsung rom and that's where this patch should shine.
Nice to see this taking some strides... I will now mention this to Criskelo so perhaps he can impliment this into his ROM as week as it is my ROM of choice...

I just switched over to the atrix from the infuse.. I have it unlocked and rooted.. Wanting to oc but not fully understanding so I'm taking it slow lol.. But i was wondering. How does the power of the 'FIRST' dual core stack up to compared to todays dual core phones?? Is this still a good phone (Since I just got it) and will it continue to be a good phone?
With a custom kernel, most benchmarks are placing it right under or even with SGSII... not bad considering that phone comes stock with 1.5 GHz dual core.

I'm not running a OC kernel, but Faux's enhanced kernel @ 1 GHz. The main thing was getting rid of motoblur, and freeing up the ram. My benchmarks aren't as fast as the SGSII, but they aren't miles behind either.... not bad considering it's half a year older. I happen to like Nivida's technology too, but that's just a personal preference.

That's correct. Right now, though, the difference is negligible. So negligible that only benchmarks will show the real difference. Now, there's several games that will work only on the Tegra platform because the other CPUs don't have the same capabilities in the graphics department.... though it's not like everyone writes games based on these settings or even optimize other games for them.

Ahem... Optimus 2X claims the first prize
Anyway I don't have an Atrix 4G, I have an Optimus 2x, same CPU. In my opinion the Tegra seems on-par with the Galaxy S2.
I'm not sure if there is a CM7 for the Atrix, but on my Optimus it is at least 2x faster than the stock rom, benchmarks reflect that too.
SunSpider is a benchmark which basically tests various web rendering tasks and gives a total score at the end
On MIUI / 1.5GHZ the Galaxy S2 scored 1600 or so. On 1GHZ, my Tegra 2 scores 1800! A lot of it appears to be down to software though, rather than raw performance, for reference, an iPhone 4 using Safari gets 4700, an Acer Liquid Metal Black which has some sort of 800MHZ snapdragon (I think?) CPU gets 3800.
The iPhone 3GS on iOS 4.1 got 16,000 or some stupid figure, well below 10,000 on iOS 5 though. In short, I guess what I'm saying is it's more down to your software setup than the hardware, obviously any phone is going to run like crap on a stock rom with 100,000 facebook and twitter apps.

I've read that, by default, only one core is used, and this gives sense to the "hotplug" governor i've found when i had the LG Optimus 3D, but now i've got some questions: does it really change a lot to us to enable dual cores all the time, if the second one is enabled when needed?
How could I make it work like default (1 core normally, second core when really needed)? I didn't test it well, but it seems that cooked ROM are more battery drainer than the stock one, is it my impression or is this caused by this "dual core full support"?
Other question is: how can i undervolt (or overvolt) my CPU? I never worried about it, but now i'd like to get the maximum from my battery
My understanding is the second core is used as needed like you said. You can force both cores on and I have done this in the past (I use the app System Tuner Pro--I highly recommend it for many many useful tasks including over clocking, undervolting, memory/task mgmt, etc...).
Forcing both cores on resulted in somewhat snappier performance; but it wasn't snappier enough to justify the loss in battery life that I experienced.

The Android OS will do it's best to only use the second core if the first core is overloaded so as to save on battery life.
As greeg32 said if you want you can 'force' the second core to be always on but the battery life will less than ideal.
Just wondering if all the new ICS roms have full dual core support for the EVO 3d.
Not sure how you test this. Maybe some could explain.

No, they don't. If you want to enable dual core support just delete mpdesicion from System and edit a file(i don't remember the name). Also, after you booted on the ROM you can download Quadrant Advanced and make a custom Bench, select CPU and you will see if both cores are availables.

What has been sort of puzzling to me now suddenly makes sense.
In most of the ICS threads I've been following, people are raving about how good the battery life is. People saying I watched 30 movies, made 118 phone calls and my battery is still 97% charged. Ok I'm exaggerating but anyhow making some unbelievable claims about battery life in ICS.
From what I've reading here at XDA and other forums, ICS taps more resources and uses more memory than GB did to run apps. So why so much better battery life?
Could it be that ICS not being dual core support unless you make it so is only using half the power of the CPU? Sort of like putting a 2 bbl carburetor on a Corvette engine where a 4 bbl would unleash the beast but use more gas?

Latest ics releases have finally fixed the cpu1 always online. System tuner pro can show you current states on CPU states. Again system tuner pro can also FORCE dual core CPU always on.
Better battery life comes from the 3.0 kernel which has better power management, amongst other things.
The second CPU kicks on as needed unless you force it always on, which drains more battery.

So it would seem by getting system tuner Pro you could turn this feature on and off like a switch.
When you want both cores running for maximum performance just turn it on in system tuner Pro, then turn if off when your done with it?
That would be alot better and easier than editing file commands.

Something like that. System tuner pro can force dual core by init.d script or after boot completed. It has boot settings, which you choose. A reboot is needed after changing I believe.

Interesting. Well its fun learning all this.
Maybe down the road as things get fully developed someone will come out with an app or widget. One where you just click it and turns on both cores on the fly. Call it TurboThruster or something like that. The icon could be flames shooting out of a tailpipe.
As phones develop they'll have quad core and more and more..........

I've been running ZR3dX (CDMA ICS ROM) which turns on dual core by default. My battery life is still amazing, especially with the screen off. One of the power management things it does is control the radios better too.
Hello everyone!
Right, I bought my htc two days ago from o2 on PAYG off course, I did my own research about the phone and I was happy with the results soo, I bought it.
When I play a game like GTA 3 with a stock settings I get some sort of lag for some reasons, although I thought, because it had the Tegra 3 chip it should run any game without any problem.
The phone is 100% stock!
here is some info in my phone that might help;
Baseband: 3.1204.168.32
Build number: 1.17.206.1
Does anyone have similar problem with the HOX+?
Also, my signal drops sometimes and it does not regain for some reason unless I go to flight mode, ON then off, back to normal. I am with o2/giffgaff, any ideas?

There are some major discussions going on around the web regarding gaming performance of this device. Furthermore there are some gaming reviews foot it on you've and so on. They are easy to find if you really look. Just do another search.
But for now here s why:
Tegra 3 is a quite performant soc for a mobile device. But it does have some issues.
First is the bad optimization by game developers. Mostly it's Gameloft. They then to ignore the fact that they should optize their games for different platforms to get a enjoyable gaming experiance. Had been worse. ATM most games are playable.
Next problem is that the graphics processors clock speed is firmly linked to the clock the CPU is running. This means when games do demands little CPU performance GPU will also clock down leading to lags. This has been improved with custom kernel, game updates due to tegra optimizations and custom kernels and ROMs.
Last but not least is that the CPU tends to be running in single core. All in all this service does have a lot of power... Mostly a lot of still unused power but I'm confident devs will go on and improve the situation even more than they already have.
For GTA just lower the graphic settings a bit or try rennovate gaming fix.
For now the only games that are not running for me as they should are GTA iii with some minor lagging, nova 3 playable since latest updates but not enjoyable. And last but not least real racing 3 with most of the time 35+ fps but many drops below 20.
For signal drops: maybe it's bad reception in your area?

yeah I know but I dont want to risk anything yet! :crying:
all the android phones I had were a HTC like the desire, desire z, sensation xe and for now the one x +, I have rooted all of them without a problem but, this phone is still under warranty I would rather wait for an update then root the phone:silly:

I don't think you understood what he said. The main point was, the GPU base clock runs at a set frequency directly related to the current clock speed of the CPU. So games like GTA that require little resources from the CPU, do not utilize the GPU to it's fullest. There are some custom kernels that allow the GPU to run at it's max speed regardless of CPU useage.

Well, I did and thats why I rooted my phone to Viperx+. I am uing the Viber elitekernel but I am having a problem in setting up the max cpu frequency to 1700, its always stuck on 1150 for some reasons and yeah I am using venom tweaks, any idea?

The max Clock Speed is 1600mhz when using all 4 cores, you can only get to 1700mhz when running on a single core. Do you have power saver enabled? That limits CPU frequency.

I found out that the game was not fully optimized for the tigra 3 chip, soo I rooted the phone and used Viperx+ 1.06 rom so I can have more control then the stock rom. Now i can do alot of things like set min/max cpu clocks speeds and soo much more, buttery life is much better now (thanks to SetCPU!!:victory but yeah I knew in the end (after going throw alot of reviews) that phone will use 1.7GHz with the 5th core only!
Is there a way I can run 4 cores at 1.6GHz then running 1 core at 1.7GHz or, if I just set max cpu to 1.6GHz, then I will run the 4 cores?
I am using elitekernel for venom team.
