I wish to change the 2 shortcuts at the bottom of Gingerbread default home screen (Phone, Browser) to something else (Messages, Gmail). But I couldn't find a way to change those icons either by press and hold on the shortcut, or by dragging icons from the Apps screen.
What's the best way to change them without using 3rd party launchers?
Thanks.
On 2.3.5 Samsung Galaxy Mini I just press Menu key in app drawer and then edit to change Touchwizz launcher shortcut.
I am not totally sure if I can remember right, as I do not use the stock GB launcher at the moment, but have you tried using the menue button while the app drawer is opened?
try going on the app drawer,press the options button near the key and press Edit and then try and drag them
If you have the stock Gingerbread launcher, it is not possible to change them. You could try an alternate launcher like LauncherPro.
Please use the Q&A Forum for questions Thanks

Thanks for the idea, I tried to open menu at app drawer, show only:
- Manage applications (equiv to Settings -> applications -> manage applications)
- Search (opens Google search)
- Notifications (opens top-down notification screen)
- Settings (Opens Gingerbread Settings screen)

I was lost in "press the menu button near the key...", so I guess that would be pressing the menu button on app drawer, right? couldn't find a correct menu option to proceed

Alright then, I was using LauncherPro but for its bugs (like stacking icons), and slow load time on my aging machine, I'd rather give the stock launcher a try.

Is this stock Gingerbread launcher or Samsung launcher? The button looks like a Samsung one
Trick is being in the App List when you select the Menu button
Go from the Home Screen into your application list then select the Menu button - you'll now see Edit - View Type- Share App. Choose Edit and from here you can move out and then select what apps you want on the lower home screen. Select the Menu button again and chose Save. Once you are done it will leave your apps in the default view - choose the menu again and select View Type and select Alphabetical Grid - done and done.
For Stock GB 2.3.6 only. Newer Versions don't Require all this BS
Got it figured out, looks like the previous instructions have a missing step
1) Go to all Applications
2) Select "Menu", then select "Customization Grid".. Not Alphabetical or List
3) Select "Menu" and now the "EDIT" option shows up
4) You can Now "ADD" or "REMOVE" Shortcuts from Shortcut Bar
5) Hit "BACK" to stop the Editing function
I found the answer to your question!

I had the same issue with my Samsung Rugby Smart, until I found the solution here (it won't let me post links, so I will split it up and not include the first part, ok?)

how can i put folders (NOT at the Home screen) in the menu screen. you know, you press the middle icon at the home screen wherein to enter the menu wherein you can see ALL the applications and stuff. i would love to organize those applications inside folders. but i can't seem to find the option where to do it. i am currently using coderom nexusace if that's even relevant. any help would be appreciated!

Use GOlauncher EX.. Or Panda home(i think).. I've used GO Launcher before.. It was nice.. U can tap and hold any apps in drawer and put on top any other apps and it will create a folder..

Yesterday I went from TW to Go Luncher it is prety awsome but I don't like that things that then you hit contacts from the dock and thenn want to go back (with key). first of all you go to phone and then I have to press back again in oder to return to home screen. And other thing is app drawer, then I open an app and hit back to close it I go to home screen not back to drawer. i feel inconvienent . Tell your experience with lunchers on yours S2
Thanks
I don't understand what you mean by pressing contacts in the dock and going back using a key.
There is no launcher that keeps open the drawer when selecting an app. I use MIUI, it has no drawer, apps are installed to the home-screen. So actually this takes away the 'inconvenience' you say you have.
Sidenote: Miui is not a launcher. It's a rom.
Touchwiz all the way!! Adw and launcher pro also good!

At home screen, at the buttom there are 5 icons and one is for contacts. Then I click on it it opens contacts list and then I want to exit I press back key (that light sensor) and it sends me not to home screen but to phone app (dial pad). On TW where was such thing.
I know that there aren't. But image that I open file explorer from drawer I use it, and then want to exit on TW I pressed back key and I would get back to drawer because I opened the program from it. But with GO luncher then I hit back I go to home screen. Maybe I miss something.
Sorry my english isn't very good

Using Go for a while now, love it have to say. Just remove that Stock Contact icon and replace with the system Contact icon, simple. The default dock icons of Go aren't pretty, black and white, ehh. I always replace all of them.
About other launchers, LP, Zeam and etc, they all are ****. What type of launcher is one in which you can't select a 480x800 wallpaper.
Nemus launcher is another good option, but it is still very basic.
And there is already a thread regarding launchers in Theme and App section.
Can you explain how to remove that Stock Contact icon and replace with the system Contact icon. I quite new here

Press and hold the stock contact icon, you will get options like Delete, Replace, Gesture. Click Delete. You will see a + icon, add Application, then select Contacts.
DONE.
Go Launcher for its widgets, was a launcher pro plus user but now prefer Go as they are constantly updating lpp seems to have gone to sleep.

Done but in the future I think I will look for icon pack because the default was so cute .
So there left one problem. And it is with drawer and apps which I mention previously maybe someone have solution for it?
And in oder not to creat a new thread, I would like an app which shows what apps are running (something like the task maneger widget in TW). Go task maneger isn't very good for me. Maybe some knows something similar?

In the app drawer of Go there is a Running tab. You can choose and close apps from there.
Is there any way to change soft key actions like MENU key to open app drawer.
No launcher provide the feature to change menu key action. Is there any way to do it???

this is indeed possible, BUT it doesn't work for the menu button bu the home button.
if you install a custom launcher. i think launcher pro and adw.launcher both have the option to tell the launcher what to do when you push the home button.
launcher pro it is
menu --> preferences --> behavior settings --> home key action --> open/close app drawer
if you do this and have launcher pro as your default launcher it will open the app drawer when you push the home button

Ah ok, remapping the menu button seems to be a bad idea, it it needed for the android unless you have 4.0
There are some apps that can remap the search button though, root required

I am looking to have a Launcher designed. It doesnt need to go into the Play Store, it'd be just for me I guess.
My idea behind this is to have the Recent Apps page as part of the Desktops
The desktop would consist of 2 main page types
The first is the Recent Apps page.
This is the page you go to by clicking on the App Switcher button, the Square icon that normally takes you to recent apps.
It has the same function as the recent apps page, except that it now displays them on the Desktop as thier own stand alone page. This page is for Recent Apps only, things like widgets and apps themselves can not be put onto this page. The Recent apps page will have the option to display 4 app on the page or up to 8. Individual Recent apps can also be pinned to the top of this page, so that no matter what app you open, your pinned open apps will always remain on the top. To veiw more open apps, you scroll down vertically. To close an open app you simply press the X. To get to your apps, you slide to the left.
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
The second desktop page type is the applications page. This page type contains all your apps and widgets. Because the launcher does not have an app drawer all your applications will be here. They can be put into folders and organized like a normal launcher. App pages are added by dragging an app to the right until a new page appears. Infinite pages can be added. When an application is opened, the screen slides to the Recent apps screen to show the app before popping opn to open your app. The app screen can be returned to by pressing the Circle home button. to get here from the recent apps screen you slide the recent apps screen to the left.
The Launcher will not have scrolling wallpaper.
The launcher would not have an option to have infinite scroll. Itwould stop scrolling pages when you hit the recent apps screen at the left or the last app page at the right.
The launcher icons would be stock Lollipop icons.
---
Another idea, but not needed, would be to have a unified inbox at the very far left after the Recent Apps page.
it would go.
Unified Inbox - Recent Apps - App Pages - More App Pages
Maybe you could make one of the existing launchers do this. Nova etc are very customisable.

Nah, all the launcher Ive used still has the Recent Apps and Apps on two seperate areas with no way to swipe between them, just the home button and recent button.
Take BB10 for example. That's my idea. The recent apps are on one page and swiping one way takes you to the apps pages.
You can use this repo I've made for making your own launcher:

Sorry, no idea how to code. This was more of a request thread.
I see.
There are some issues with getting the list of recent apps, which I've found while developing my "app manager" app :
1. it could sometimes be empty, especially when starting the device.
2. it isn't guaranteed to return you the amount of items you want.
3. Some items are quite weird to show (like launchers).
4. Starting with Kitkat, the permission to get this list of recent apps has become deprecated, and can only return you apps you've launched from the current app.
5. Starting with Lollipop, there are a lot more to get from the user (a lot of statistics), but it requires user's confirmation.
Hi, It would be great to have an option to automatically open the keyboard when opening the app drawer, so you can instantly start typing/searching without reaching for the search bar first. Any idea on how to accomplish this task on my new s23u, asking for a freshly converted iPhone user missing spotlight.
Thanks!
I use the "home screen only" layout because I'm used to the swipe up to search function with the keyboard automatically opening. (only available without app drawer)

Have you been able to get this to work? When I click on Finder access I get two radio buttons (Home Screen and App screen) and you can't select either.
Maybe you need to disable the home screen only from your regular settings.

Not sure what you mean - I def don't want all my apps on my home screens so I have it set to "Home and Apps screens" in home screen layout. Is that what you mean???
Yeah that's what ment. If you have it like that then I'm not sure why you can't select the Apps screen radio button from Good note app.
Try updating the Home up apk or reset some settings.
Try using the Routines, its pretty powerful for all kinds of stuff like this.

I figured it out. You need to disable "swipe down for notifications" in settings to enable Home Up search. It's one or the other. If you have "swipe down for notifications" enabled, then the radio buttons in Home Up search are disabled.
This then means you need to swipe down from the top of the (very tall) screen to see your notifications. It's not really a good trade-off because you get a lot more notifications than use app search (but good for everyone to know it's an option).
Works ok here with swipe down for notification

Can you elaborate? What I'm saying is that you cannot swipe down anywhere on a home screen for both Finder (App) Search and Notifications. If you enable FInder Search anywhere on the home screen, you can only pull down the notification shade from the top of your device.
Are you seeing something different?
I swipe down from home screen to get notifications, I swipe up to get to the apps screen and then at that screen I swipe down to get the search with keyboard on focus.

Thanks. The issue with this is that the keyboard doesn't appear automatically with the swipe up, which was the question originally asked.
Indeed but this is expected. The Good lock feature explicitly says that you'll need to swipe down from the app screen for the keyboard to show and focus on the search bar.
What you want is to swipe down from the home screen and have the keyboard immediately show?

That's what the OP asked // the title of this thread.
If you put an icon on a home screen (ideally in the dock) for Sesame or Finder App search, that's what happens (you can start searching immediately). That's what I'm doing. 1 click instead of 2.
I know this isn't exactly what you asked, but you might like it as much or better. Use the One Hand Operation + module in Good Lock. You can set one of the 12 gestures to Finder. It comes up with the keyboard active. I use this module to define a screenshot gesture (swipe diagonally up from bottom right), which I find easier and quicker than other methods. I also define back and forward gestures.
There are a lot of interesting actions that can be assigned.
