800 mb ram? i thought we had 1gb - HTC Rezound

noticed this awhile ago and wanted to see what you guys thought
on the task manager app, it says i have slightly more than 800 MB total
now i know the phone is supposed to have 1GB, but is 200 taken up by the system leaving 800 for the user? Not to mention that my phone usually has 200 - 300 free at any given time (bloat removed)

That's exactly what it means, the system takes up ~200mb leaving the rest for the user.

What app do you guys use to measure free memory?
My task manager always says like ~200... but when I go to the list of 'running apps' in the OS It says I have closer to 400-500mb free. (assuming cached applications aren't included in the later number.)

Yeah, you should have 325 - 425 mbs free most of the time. If I drop below 325 I tap on Fast Reboot and I'm back up to around 400mb.

where, in the manage applications one or the task manager in the start bar? i idle around like 130-140 in the task manager lol

System does hog like 200 MB of RAM. Generally have 300-400 MB of RAM if I have nothing running, otherwise 100-200 which is fine. If I notice any slowdown I just kill running apps w/ go launcher ex and all is well.

same here. I use system panel and my phone never shows more than 150mb of free ram unless I just did a kill all. Really need root to clean sense out a bit.

[Q] disappearing RAM

Hello!
I've had the atrix for a couple of days now, and have noticed that some ram is disappearing.
I use advanced task killer, but I don't have it set to autokill. Instead, I just press the widget as a kill button occasionally throughout the day. I haven't modded the application to kill certain things, or to not kill certain things. It is functioning just as it is downloaded.
So in the morning, after a fresh restart, i pressed the kill switch and i had 550 mb of ram (roughly). This was constant for a few hours. then around lunch time, i pressed kill switch and i had 460 something. Than now around dinner time I have only 370 something mb of ram.
Is there something that I'm missing? Like system apps opening throughout the day that are unaffected by task killer?
Anyone have any advice as to managing apps because the atrix (and motoblur) try to run a lot of them.
Also, I thought this phone has 1 GB of ram. I guess some of it is tied up in things behind the curtain
Check the ram usage on your computer, install a few programs that have services that run, then look at your ram usage.
Same thing.
regarding the ram usage. I cant figure out what the phone is doing with 500mb of ram all the time. This os is able to run on other android devices with only 512mb of ram and consistently have 200-300 free mb of ram. What is the Atrix doing with all that ram?

RAM not used is analogous to RAM not present in a way.
Android loads and keeps apps ready in memory for quick launch times. They are just loaded and kept, 0 CPU usage for any of them.
If u want to know more, check the thread 'android memory management' (link in my signature).

The OS e.g. Android and Touchwiz use up about 100mb RAM for itself leaving only 300-400mb for the user. My HTC Desire S has 768mb but really i can only use 623mb hope this helps.

Is there a way to install a mod to free up some of the RAM the OS uses? Or a lighter android that doesn't use quite as much?

I would recommend a 3rd party launcher like ADW Launcher on Android market very light weight, also a app like memory booster which frees RAM. Their are no such mods to change the file system usage as changing the amount of RAM the system needs could result in a unstable device. I have a Galaxy wifi 5.0 with 512mb RAM and the 200mb left is enough for me without lag etc. hope this helps
I recommend using Advanced Task Killer. It has a very easy interface, and frees up ram quickly.
What does it say for ram on the player.... I have seen 377... and 345.
I have 345 and Im pretty pissed about it.
I have 342mb of RAM available. But I heard that around 100+ mb are dedicated to the gpu on the galaxy s phone, and the galaxy player has the same hardware so should be the same. So I think it still has 512mb of ram, but just 342 is usable by Android.
Have a look at the output of dmesg (e.g. run the following in a terminal and copy the resultant file to your PC to view: dmesg > dmesg_output.txt) and it tells you how much memory you have and how much has been set aside. Note you will probably want to reboot before you do this as otherwise the interesting messages have scrolled out of the kernel message buffer.
I've been using an app called Fast Reboot Pro. It appears to simply close processes that are running in the background. It then shows you how much memory was was freed. I hit every so often and especially when things appear to lag. Seem to work pretty well.

Gingerbread/Samsung has it's own task manager which in turn has it's own widget which does this. No need to install an app for this
I to use fast reboot, find it much more effective than what the player comes with. I also use ram manager pro witch is a very good tool to set different ram profiles, I like "balance (more free memory)" the best. I first select my profile, then I run fast reboot, very effective! The more you run fast reboot, the more memory it frees up, witch is great for big games like asphalt 6. Also, I use zeam launcher, very lightweight, perhaps the lightest, but still a great improvement over touchwiz. Another thing, NO LIVE WALLPAPERS is an absolute necessary! These things eat WAY more ram than they say on taskmanager. THEY CAN EAT 50+ MB OF RAM!! Also, services like widgetlockscreen and such will eat your ram. If you want to play a heavy game, go to running services and kill as many as you can, you can also clear cached apps by hitting the menu button in running services. Hope these tips help you to make the most of our small supply of ram!
Hmm, after more testing, it would appear that wifi burns around 25mb of ram when on! So, if your really short on ram, just turn on airplane mode to kill all antennas. I just played modern combat 3 with 25mb free ram throughout the whole level I had 190mb free originally, that game sure eats the stuff :s The CPU rides at 1000mhz through the whole game, lol, could always use some more of that stuff! That's what oc is for

Speed Up My phone

Hello guys
I have Lg optimus ME phone
which has
140 MB RAM
600 MG Processor
my rom is CM7 with ADW.launcher
the phone is fast but not so much
I want to make it very very fast
overclocking stopped my phone completely
I'm killing the services normally
but no results
in the normal cases I have 45 MB ram
no the question is
How can I get more ram Like 100 MB - 120 MB
Or How can I make the phone faster than now
(the internal memory is 180 MB So I have the system apps and launcher no it only)
thnx in advance
Theres nothing i could find in the LG forum, but i've used this and it works good.... https://market.android.com/details?...xLDEsImltb2JsaWZlLm1lbW9yeWJvb3N0ZXIubGl0ZSJd

As the ops phone is not in same price range as iphone its probable they can't afford to waste money on one or they could get a dearer but higher spec android one so saying ditch it for iphone isn't helping.
@op you can use app manager like gemini app manager or titanium backup to uninstall or freeze aps you don't need, move apps to sd card to save space and if you use gemini can also set autorun of any app so it won't start until needed which will give you more memory free.
Also maybe try a launcher like zeam that uses less ram as this will save a little more memory.

If you have some "regular" storage left, you make a swapfile. Google "swapper 2"
Yes

Low on ram

I'm running dagr8s alpha 2 ics rom. And I know that it has lower ram than the gb roms. But lately I have been running Tasker (amazing app btw) numbers and it keeps notifying me that I have low ram and it might not work properly. I go to applications in settings and check my ram and it says I only have 98mb free. I end all tasks and clear ram and then still I have like 120-130 free. I'm afraid that this is a too low amount. And wanted your opinions on what I should do. Is this enough should I just ignore the warnings will Tasker still run fine? How can I get more ram? Are any of you also experiencing low ram?

Taller uses ram also. I run trebuchet launcher on alpha 2 and have no real issues. If it gets slow you can hold home and clear things out. Running a lot of widgets still affect ram also.

If you go to developer options in settings at the bottom and select the background processes and set it to 3 processes at most that helps alot...also if u change ur dalvik heap to 64 that also helps a ton...DO NOT and I repeat do not set it below 64 as u will soft brick your phone

You must understand how Android uses memory, it loads your frequentlyused programs into ram so when you go to use them, they open much faster than if they would if they had to open "fresh" each time.the lmk (low memory killer) should take care of everything if you ate currently using a process that uses a lot of memory it will kill off apps as it needs to.
Put simply: FREE RAM IS WASTED RAM.
Have a marine navigation program "Navionics USA EAST" that wouldn't open in ICS(leak and Saurom) unless I cleared RAM. No issue onstock GB, and runs fine on sgh-i777 ICS? Tried debloating leak, but didn't help much. Will try limiting running programs when back on ICS.

Free Ram is wasted ram. Never thought about it like that. I understand but i would still like some free ram just so its available for other apps i open. I did use the task manager to kill running apps and clear ram and it didnt free up that much ram that is why i was worried.
Ill try limiting background proccess to .
Also how do i set dalvik heap to 64? And what exactly does this accomplish?
Thanks for the replies guys.
Yes set it to 3 processes at most. Task manaher killers r just crap dnt use them

Welcome to ICS. This is exactly why I DONT like ICS - the memory footprint is huge just for ICS alone.
Free ram is not entirely wasted ram.
Let me explain.
So, my phone RAM is completely (or nearly) filled and I open a new app. There is now a long delay as Android goes to work closing app(s) down and doing garbage collection to free up memory for the new app I just tried to open but it only frees up enough for the one app I just opened.
And now, every app I go to open is going to have this long delay.
What you really want is about 80% ram usage - enough that there is free ram to open new apps without Android having to scurry around to free up a bunch of memory.
I dont know if there is a way to force a certain amount of ram to be free but imo, thats what youd really want.
I only have 6 user apps on my phone and Im running stock GB so even if I opened everything at once, there would be plenty of ram to have them open all at once (Go Launcher, Blue Skies (paid), Battery Power Widget, System Tuner Pro, BeyondPod, & Audible).
It's called "minfree memory," what you want is an app that will allow you to modify those values. Back when I had a Captivate, I used an app called AutoKiller for that purpose. I haven't needed it on the Note though. You can find it in the Android market.
Is it possible for apps to crash when the phone doesnt have enough free memory (RAM)?
-Once you go NOTE, you'd say 4 inches a Joke
How much RAM do you guys have available when running GB. The phone only sees 767Mb of RAM out of the 1Gb is that normal?
yea i think thats normal because the phone system uses some of that ram to make the phone work. Like if you ever had a sd card or an ipod that was say an 8gb ipod you actually only have like 7.66gb free.
But yeah I would like more ram availabe so the phone can load apps quickly and wont have to waste time closing stuff. I dont think free ram is wasted ram
As said before, Android uses ram differently since it based upon Linux. If the entire ROM runs around 600-800mB and most of it gets loaded into RAM, this will leave you with 400-200mB free RAM but the entire OS is already loaded and ready to go! Once you load a RAM intensive application, Android/Linux kernel will free space for that application.
I believe GPU consumes an excess of RAM to handle this beast's resolution/size.
I have to go back to GB. Delay in apps opening is getting old compared to i777 daily driver.

Root S3 to make more free ram available??

If I root my S3 is it possible to make more ram available to me?
With all apps closed I have 650/780 being used so that only leaves me with 130mb of ram.

Jesus. There's a huge panic now because the variant has 2 gigs of ram...
http://www.androidcentral.com/ram-what-it-how-its-used-and-why-you-shouldnt-care
You actually have more free, but the android has a lot of it saved for caching, etc. For example, Facebook takes 40 mb, but when I open it only like 5 or 10 mb of the ram shown as "available" is taken away because parts of it are actually open already.
But yes, if you root it, and a developer adjusts the Minfree to a large amount you will have more free but your phone will probably be slower.
Folks need to keep in mind, that keeping RAM free as you would with a Windows based OS, is NOT ideal in Android. Android uses RAM completely differently and it is perfectly okay for your phone to make use of RAM, even for apps you are not currently using.
There's a fair amount of documentation out there about this - do some Google-fu to deep dive further.
Actually I ask because when I was trying to send a picture in whatsapp it kept sayin "try again" but when I closed all tasks in multitask the picture did send. So I'm guessing it is a ram problem.
Also take it easy on Mr. This is my first android phone, I've been using iphone since the 3g and don't know nothing about android..... yet

You don't really want to much free ram. If there is to much free ram it means apps are not going in to cache witch will mean really slow app loading times. 200-300mb free is ample for new apps to run, if the OS needs more then its auto memory management will come in to play to free up more if needed, android is a very smart peace of kit
Sent from my HTC One X using Tapatalk 2
if anyone were to choose pre-caching order for faster load times ( usually just by seconds than non-pre-cached) to no random force closes because there is more free memory, they would chose more free memory.
but since the experts have already said android memory doesn't work the same way like windows does, then the best would be a balance between cache and free memory. right? right. that's where official updates and dev fixes come in.
