I can't get a gps lock without reboot first. Really annoying because I have and use the vehicle dock! I've seen a lot of post about the excellent GPS compared to the captivate. But for some reason my phone's gps just doesn't work. It will instantly lock sometimes, but then go back to "searching for GPS signal." Other times it will lock but show me not moving at all from the location it locked at. Any input/ help would be much appreciated...

You can easily see how many satellites can be seen by your phone and more importantly you can use it to clear agps and then update agps.
Depending where you live and what gps issues you're having this could be the fix you're looking for.

Yea im on stock everything as of right now, haven't had time to root this one yet.

Mine flakes out and i have to use an app called faster fix to make mine work again. Really annoying, it's definitely a software issue. Maybe some kind of app causing it, i am not sure.
When I had my nexus S I had several problems with my GPS too
I read from this http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/Google Mobile/thread?tid=7ef31b73f08281d5&hl=en site that you can download an app called "GPS STATUS" and go:
Menu -> Tools -> Manage A-GPS -> Reset
And that fixed my prob.
Also in that thread a guy says that his problem persisted with a Vibrant, so he tried the option to download gps info and it fixed it. Im not sure how the app suggested before works, but in my case GPS Status did the trick! Good Luck with that!
I'm rooted with unnamed and I can't get a GPS lock at all, ever. I regret not testing the GPS when the phone was stock. Meanwhile my Dell streak gets a lock instantly right next to it. I'm going to have to flash back to stock to see if it fixes it. My 30 day exchange window is closing super soon.
There's certainly something going on with GPS. I'm on Unnamed 1.3.0 and I had Siyah's kernel v.2.3 installed. While Google Maps and GPS Test seemed to be getting signal and showed plenty of satellites, Google Navigation read a perpetual "Searching for GPS..."
Due to other issues with that version of Siyah, I flashed Entropy's latest Daily Driver (12/12) and it SEEMS to have fixed it. I stepped outside, pulled up Navigation and it found me within seconds.
Interestingly, Siyah's kernel had a heck of a time with Wi-Fi as well. Flashing Entropy's fixed that as well.
So it's possible that it's a kernel issue. Try flashing DD 12/12 on top of Unnamed.
Moxie, thanks for the reply. I'll flash it hopefully tomorrow and report back.
I am using the stock rom but rooted and cwm installed. My GPS worked very well with this setup for months. Recently, the GPS will find 8-10 satellites but not lock on to any of them until I reboot my phone. I am wondering if this is due to some app I've installed.
Unamed here comes with DD kernal. Problems often. Very annoying. Reboot fixes ever time. Flashing a different kernal probably isn't what fixes it, the reboot fixes it.
Working the other day had to be somewhere by 2pm, GPS stopped working got there a half hour late...lovely...before I knew reboot fixes. Still its ridiculous

Say guys, any GOOD gps apps out there where we can just acquire and download maps that don't weigh a ton instead of HAVING to use data?
Unnamed with entropy dd kernel. Never have any issues...

I am on unnamed 2.1.1, Entropy's DD 1212 kernel and on GPS Test app my phone is not even finding satelites at all. Its like nothing on the gps is working. Does anybody have any ideas as to how to fix it?
I just updated to 2.1.1 as well, GPS test isn't working. HOWEVER, go into google maps and GPS is now working.
edit: as I was typing this GPS test started working. Leave it on for a bit perhaps?
In conclusion: It's a software issue.

Yea i let it sit for a bit and never managed to get it to see any satellites...I am gonna go home and try to flash unnamed again and see if i get any improvement. Hopefully it was just a bad flash.
Every samsung phone has a gps problem....doubt that this is software alone. I love my GSII but this is one of the shortcomings.
GPS on my phone locks fine.
So the reflash worked. My gps problem is now resolved.
I lock all but one satellite indoors, and have seen as low as 14ft accuracy indoors. Locks all satellites and 9ft accuracy outside.
My 4G Slide, by comparison, consistently locks every satallite and has 9ft indoors. All satellites and 3ft accuracy outside.

Currently, he is at his parents' house and can surf just fine on their WiFi connection, but no GPS...

That's a very good question, and one I haven't have the opportunity to test on my Touch Pro yet. I have iGo Nav-n-Go on my device. What if I were in the middle of nowhere in Kentucky or Indiana, with no cell signal - wouldn't I still be able to navigate? If not, that is a HUGE disappointment in the GPS capability. I thought A-GPS was one thing (triangulation from towers) and full-on GPS (with a dedicated GPS chip) communicated directly with satellites...
Matt
Alright, I disproved that theory about assisted GPS. Last night while driving home from hockey, I turned off my phone via the Com Manager, then opened up iGo Nav N Go and right away my GPS found where I was at, and the program worked flawlessly.

It didn't require the Sprint radio to be running at all. Granted, apps like Google Maps or Live Search would be ineffective with the radio turned off, but if you have a stand-alone GPS application such as TomTom, Nav N Go or something similar, then GPS should work just fine.
Obviously in the case of being in the U.K., it would require having the maps for that country, otherwise the stand-alone apps wouldn't be able to show you squat!
Matt
Why do people still thing these phones NEED data connections to get GPS fixes? They *can* use them to achieve a quicker fix but do not require it. Keep in mind, without a connection it might take a while to get a fix.
This has been proven many times... Actually, I personally had comm manager off on my phone on a plane, but the GPS on, watching the speed and altitude. I don't know if the airline would have liked that...
GG
edit* Certian GPS nav software will let you load the maps from other sources, googlemaps for instance will not.
Just heard back from my friend after he read my message about the success of my test. He said the main thing he's wanting to do is geotag photos, and the Touch Pro simply will not find a GPS signal with the camera app nor footprints. He's not even concerned about using a map application at this point (heck, it's his hometown!).
Not sure why he can't get a signal for geotagging purposes, but it's just not happening. What a drag...

Not, sure but the Crackberry Pearl user on my account gets data for a huge roaming rate over there. All her emails came through, and we all know the Pearl isnt a better phone, so maybe its his plan? Who knows. Sorry
I was in poland recently and also treyd to get tomtom with poland maps on it to get a fix, on my sprint touch pro with agps disabled...
BUT WITH NO LUCK!!!!
I treyd everything like turning off phone in comm manager and so but it didnt work.
Anyone know if you can actually make the phone NOT need a data connection to use the GPS??? I had an Alltel Touch Pro with Tomtom that NEVER needed a data connection to get a lock but now that Im with Sprint and have a Sprint Touch Pro, Im using the same version of Tomtom with the same map and installed it the same way but no matter what, it ALWAYS want to use a data connection. Anyonw have a clue why?? I tried turning my radio off and it could not get a lock for about a half hour. As soon as I turned the radio back on it got a lock within seconds. Any ideas. Thanks.
Now, I know that this rom is still in an early Alpha stage, but as a test I left it on, unplugged with wifi on, not connecte (having that irritating bug where it won't connect to anything), to see how long the battery lasts, and I noticed 2 things.

A. Should the battery be draining this quick, when it was not used for the 24 hours which it lasted on battery? I mean, no apps were running, and it wasn't even connected to wifi, I usually leave wifi on on my phone by an accident and I don't notice it draining the battery that quick...(my only explenation although I dunno if it's right, is that while it's not connected and there are networks that it knows and can connect to in range, that it is constantly TRYING to connect, and thus draining the battery?
B. It says that it was constantly awake, but if you look below, the screen was turned on like, 2 or three times throughout the day?
Any ideas about these? Anyone know a fix for wifi? I tried wifi fixer from the market, but it didn't work (looks like all it does is reset the wifi) (and please don't suggest the changing channel thing on the router, cause I can't do that in college). Also, calendar won't sync with my email, says sync is down, try again later, and in accounts and settings, it doesn't say sync Calendar, it says sync com.android.calendar...? I tried wiping dalvik cache and reinstalled GAPPS V11...but nothing, still won't sync
Thanks guys.

Try Fixing Permissions in CWM. If that doesn't work then wipe everything and reinstall.
what would the permissions fix be for...the calendar?
It should fix the wifi. Did you have android on your TP before ICS? If you did you might of installed it over one another which may lead to problems. Best bet is to backup, wipe everything, and reinstall. I currently have ICS on my TP and its golden! Never had wifi problems and use my Calender daily.
Re: Your battery life. If you check your process list with top from a console or with all options on in system tuner, do you see anything pegging the CPU? I had an odd issue where netd was consuming loads of resources (50-90% constantly on one core) and it was killing the battery like that and making the device slower. I replaced that daemon with the same file from CM7 and stopped having issues.
Check the last few pages of the CM9 thread in the dev section for more details.

Edit, here's my battery life for a similar period with wifi on.
Weird tapatalk bug. Ignore.
Scroll down the page to the link for gapps fixer, it should fix your calendar problem.

I'm pretty sure awake and screen on are different things. I was having some nasty idle issues before I replaced netd though. I don't recall if it was staying awake like that, but one core was pegged constantly at >=50%.

I've seen this suggestion multiple times with no real explanation as to why this fixes the wifi.
I did this multiple times across multiple clean installs. It did not fix the Wifi for me.
Does anyone know why this is being suggested as a way to fix wifi??

Does your GPS still has problems or is it working like charm??
I got mine just yesterday and the gps doesn't seem to work well either. I updated to the latest available to me on simfree and it's

OK actually I think it does get better as you use it - it must store some temporary data. It first didn't work well, then took 43 seconds, now 18 seconds. That's OK with me!

GPS problem
My Xperia U seems to have the same issue...
The devices that came with the NovaThor U8500 chipset are experiencing this GPS problem. It is a hardware problem.
When I use the A-GPS function (using 3g data during the satellite search to calculate the distance of the device until the antennas making a triangulation) i can get signal much faster.
Unfortunately the GPS receiver of these devices is disappointing.

Hi.
About three weeks ago the gps on my galaxy s2 stopped working. I have been running CM9 nightlies since about march with no issues before this.
This isn't a matter of not locking properly, and the internal gps is set properly in settings. It simply seems like the phone cannot communicate with the GPS modal. No GPS symbol appears in the status bar. I do most of my testing in the GPS Toolbox app.
Is there a way to tell if this is a software issue or a hardware issue.
any advice would be useful.
Back to stock firmware in the first instance. If you have the same problem running stock, then chances are it's a hardware issue.

Did this a while back. No change, exact same behaviour. Is there some way i can test to be 100% sure it is a hardware failure?
your last chance is to change the modem , try diffrent modems , and give your gps some time too be locked , also try some gps patches " you will find alot around here "
run your test in avery very clean sky to be sure it is ahardware fault , thats what i can tell you
btw : run the test with gps status app , i know it very well , and it will download the agps data auto while you are connected to the internet , and will provide with alot of usefull info , and have alot of settings

I am almost 100% sure that your modem had no control over the gps, only the data it downloads to help clock sync to the gps signal. I don't need to be outside to test this, It's not a gps locking issue, its a gps working at all issue.
I switched back to an old modem that it use to work on anyway, no luck.
1) You are absolutely correct re: modem having nothing to do with GPS ;-)
2) I doubt there's any way that you as a phone user (as opposed to someone who is used to tinkering with the hardware/fixes them for a living) can test definitively for a hardware problem so far as GPS is concerned. Honestly, you've tried everything a user could possibly try to rule out a hardware problem (unless it's something really obvious we're both missing here).
Me, I'd send it in for warranty service. Out of warranty/warranty service too hard to organise ? Take it to a mobile repair shop & explain exactly what the problem is & exactly what you've been doing with the phone up until now (they don't care you've been running non-stock firmware as it's not a warranty job; the few mobile techs I've met run non-stock firmware on their phones).

Yep, There is a place I know that i will probably take the phone too. Just trying to make sure I am not missing something stupid here.
Yep that's what I've been sitting here going thru in my head in the 20 minutes since my last post. I can't find anything obvious other than maybe do a completely clean install of stock ?
That is format cache, data, system, & internal sd card in CWM, then flash stock in Odin then see what happens. Don't restore anything at all until you've tested the GPS with a 'clean' setup. Obviously install GPS Status from Google Play to test it out.
I know you did a wipe/factory reset when you tried stock, which would have taken care of anything that may have been left behind from CM9 or whatever.
Unfortunately that's all I got :-( Hope you've been able to think of something in the interim we might have missed.

Hi,
Sorry for digging those thread out. i have exact the same issue with my I9100.

I have checked the antenna connection between the 2 boards and this is fine.
What was your solution?

It was a hardware issue. Repair guys replaced the mainboard and all was well.
I had to send it to them twice as nothing showed up on their debug and they sent it straight back. Give them specific instructions to try and actually use the GPS so they catch the problem.
I never used GPS much as I was pretty happy with the Google's location service. But I have read a lot about people facing issues with GPS on Canvas HD and thought, Why not give it a try! So here is the solution
The issue first
1. I keep waiting and waiting, but it shows "Searching for GPS"
2. What do do now?
Here are the steps:
a. Go to settings
b. Under settings, go to Location access
c. Under location access, see if 'GPS sattelites' - The option is checked
d. Click on 'GPS Satellites'
e. You will see something like this
f. If 'GPS EPO assistance' is unchecked, Check it.

Thanks for sharing this solution but sorry to say it didn't work for me. I did exactly what you wrote.
Hi Verma... Make sure that you are in an open area and have a pretty good internet service. You might have to wait for some time to get it started initially...

Same issue here as well
It Worked!!!
Hey man!! It worked!!! At first I got hopeless when it didn't work for me but somehow a couple of days ago I tried it again and it took a while but eventually got my location and since then its working great for me!!! I use it all the time and its just great.. Although I'm not sure how much data it uses to pin point my location if you could find out or tell me how much more data it uses when we turn a gps and GPS EPO on. Thanks bud cheers! :victory:
Ty atlast worked
Sent from my Micromax A116 using xda premium
Good to know it has worked for a few of you!

@techpick
I am on StarkHD 3.5. GPS was ok and was fixing fine at some extent. Sometimes slow. But after this setting, even I got bit fast gps lock. Even indoors some sattelites were seen, but not locked. It was not possible before. I get full lock near window now.
Thanks a lot pal.
PS: Lolz! You blocked your area in Google Map screenshot, but hey you forgot to block your co-ordinates and that reveals your exact location. he he

I'm on Naturewiz HD and facing problem with GPS. Used GPS Status tool. It did something, but still there was no GPS lock. After that I just went to my balcony (from where sky is visible) and got a GPS lock almost instantaneously.
a doubt
Don't know if I should even post it here.. but since we're talking about GPS and stuff.. I am currently using Google maps and I want to set my home location on of so I can instantly use it whenever I want. However, when I turn my GPS on and set my current location as home, it takes the address of that place and fill it out for me and when looking at that address on map its nowhere near my home so I starred the exact location of my home on map but I don't know how to set it as home. Has anybody faced this issue? I have a feeling if I can get that starred location's latitude position I'll be able to set it as my home and it will be accurate.. am I wrong?
Please if anybody has faced this issue or knows a workaround that guide me. Thanks coz I really wanna use that feature as I travel a lot.

Yes, you are right, you should not post it here. Go in help and troubleshooting section. You problem is about location application and not gps fix. Help everyone to save their valuable time. :silly:
